Considering the show has been out for almost 2 weeks, it was renewed for season 2 before it even premiered, and is incredibly amazing, I am shocked that there isn't a thread yet for it.

So here it is.

For those not in the know, "Orange is the New Black" is the latest of Netflix's original programming. And it is its best effort yet. If you're not watching it you are missing out.

I was trying to figure out how best to sell the show, but then I realized I don't need to. I went into it having only seen that trailer (which sparked a mild interest), and I was hooked by the opening credit sequence, which is one of the best I have ever seen.

I really don't know what else to say, besides watch it. It is the best show of the year. It's funny, it's brutal, it's real. Best of all, it's smart. Especially from a technical standpoint. The writing is brilliant, and it gives itself to the cast, instead of dictating them.

I cannot give this show a higher recommendation. Do yourself a favor and check it out. All 13 episodes are up on Netflix.

After House of Cards, i was inclined to watch this and the premise also seems interesting but i feared that it would have some kind of cheesy message but since you two are praising it this much, i guess i will give it a try.

Orange is the New Black is a show about trajectories.

Told initially through the lens of Piper Chapman, a hapless college grad with a supportive fiance bound for prison because of a dalliance with crime in her youth that catches up to her ten years later, it soon spirals outwards, including a diverse cast of women interrupted. We step into the shoes of former athletes, transwomen, racketeers, nuns, addicts, drug dealers, and nannies - and are given glimpses into their lives through inspired flashbacks, standing in surreal contrast with their prison reality. We see them rise, we see them fall. We don't usually see everything.

But we do see what happens when small minded, money-minded people are given absolute control over women with none.
We do see what we often don't see - when people who've done good and who've done bad are thrown into the prison system to fend for themselves.
We so see people with no place to go, and the community that creates.

We see a whole lot of humanity in this women-in-prison narrative.

It's not all stark or sad – it's often funny, and always smart -- but the world ("fishbowl") Kohan crafts in Orange is the New Black is a difficult one to escape: both for the characters, and for the viewer.
And by episode 3 I was ready for Season 2.

Unfortunately his character is the worst part of the show.

I love this show.

Too bad I marathoned it way too fast and now have to wait a year to see what happens. Thankfully, Breaking Bad starts soon, so I won't be without something to watch.

Oh and this show is a million times better than House of Cards or that horrible Hemlock Grove

I've watched a couple episodes and I enjoy the show a lot. It's sad that in this day and age it's still a rarity to see a show that's driven primarily by well-written female characters. And even then there's immediately a backlash that there might be…. feminist undertones!!! Think of the children!!!

It's a good show. I don't think it's great or anything special. It feels like a weak version of Oz at times and suffer from some of the same problems imo, mostly that the cast is generally made of bad people or people who have made and through their current situation continue to make bad decisions. But the show goes to great lengths to flesh out it's characters and many of them grow on you, personally I dislike the protagonist but I'm not sure if they made her that way on purpose. Also like Oz the plot is like a drawn out series of escalating incidents so ideally by the time you get to the end of the season all the dominos have fallen in satisfying way which they more or less do. That means though that the pace of the show moves slowly sometimes but overall it's paced pretty well.

I'd recommend the show to anyone as it's better than almost anything on TV right now until Breaking Bad comes back next week.

I figured that I like orange for my ties and bow-ties, so I should give this series a chance. Glad I did 'cause I really liked it and I'm on board for more seasons!

Pretty much how i felt. It´s really good and entertaining, there are certainly excellent parts, but all in all, i was not struck by its greatness, definitely not to the degree of comparing it to Breaking Bad, just my 2 cents.

Finished the first two episodes of season 2 yesterday.

I loved the first episode, definitely not what I expected. Second episode was more traditional, but still hella fun. This season looks promising.

I finished the season earlier today. It was fantastic and it highlighted some characters that didn't get much to do in the first season. The downside is that some great season 1 characters had very little screentime, most notably Sophia.

Literally just finished the finale like five minutes ago. On the whole the season was excellent, though I'm not quite sure if its better than season one. It's definitely not worse though. Right now I'm mainly just happy that it didn't hit a sophomore slump. Now the wait begins for season 3, which is the only bad part of Netflix's release it all at once strategy. I'll binge watch anything I love, but only spending one weekend with a show causes it to slip from my mind after a month. But then again, even if it was weekly I'd probably binge watch it anyway when I get enough time off of work to actually sit down and watch a show. >_>

But I'm digressing. Excellent second season.

! Season 2 was just amazing. Black Cindy getting a flashback and not Big Boo hurt hard, but you gotta spread out the good ones so season 3 has something to use.
! Also, I know people disliked it but Vee's/V's death made me laugh hysterically. This show is so funny and so sad at the same time.

! I think I preferred this to season 1. As usual, I don't really care for Piper's story, but fortunately she took a bit of a backseat to most other characters. The flashbacks were pretty much all great, and I liked that they gave them to some more obscure characters. Who would have thought Sister Ingalls would get one! I think Morello's flashback was my favorite though, what a dark turn for her character. I mean, I kinda understood something was off with her constant mentioning of Christopher, but I had no idea that she was actually just stalking him. She's definitely one of the more unstable ones in there.
! And my god, I guess I have to mention Vee. What a bitch. I liked that she shook up things in the prison, but damn, she took it to the extreme! I still can't believe that Taystee blindly followed her for that long. At least sweet Poussey stood her ground, and I love her for that. I do love Vee's end though. Of all characters to kill her, I never thought it would be Rosa! I seriously expected Vee to flee and remain a presence during season three, but I guess it wasn't in the cards.

So yeah, I'm anxiously awaiting season 3 now. Another year to wait I guess…

To be honest there aren't that many shows that can compare the brilliantness of Breaking Bad .

Does anyone else find the running gag of the spanish guy who brings his daughter to visitation and always sits there stoic as hell hilarious? At first i thought he was just a jerk but after seeing it so many times it's kinda heartwarming to see that he visits so often. It signals they must have a pretty decent relationship despite her being locked up.

he even hated talking much, but because the girlfreind would be relocated he had to talk more to the baby. and than the last time we saw them he started talking a lot to the baby. that was quiet heartwarming.

So in the end the girl behind the weel was the bankrobber? I exualle did not see that coming. I was wondering in that flachback about whom it was. only in that last glorius moment i got it.

That's done by design. Jenji didn't think a show with a non-white main character would get greenlit, so she pitched the show has Piper's story, but intended to basically weed her out over time. Piper was mostly in the background this season, with the exclusion of the last few episodes; I mean once you remove Larry and her best friend, you loose a lot of Piper's story.
