Please dont merge! I feel this is a pretty important and interesting topic to talk about! Do feel free to close it if it goes against the rules though.

I've noticed that Funimation seems to make light deviations from the original script. Its not really noticeable unless you are intimately familiar with the subs. Personally, I dont think this is a bad thing Dubs arent meant to be 255% accurate translations anyway. This thread will also serve to list said Instances of deviations.

-During Usopp's introductory arc, the Usopp pirates fear their captain has been devoured by an Oni-baba (Ogress). Funi changes this to Cannibals. A minor change but it kind of spoils the joke where the kids scream "OGRESS!" and Nami gets mad at them,LOL. It is ALSO notable because 4kids went with Ogress with their translation.
-When Chopper returns to Doctor Hiruluk all bruised and beaten, the Doctor's dialogue is accurate until he says "Cause you've got such a kind heart". In the original he says "Bakero…" (You Dummy...) grateful for what Chopper did for him but kind of mad at him for putting himself in harm's way.
-When Luffy is about to defeat Sir Crocodile he says "Im gonna beat you" and "I will win" instead of the "I will Surpass you" thing the japanese thing had.
-When Eneru tries to kill Robin in Skypea, Zoro's well intentioned but ultimately sexist remarks were changed.
-And most recently, after Robin expresses her desire to live she says "TAKE ME AWAY FROM HERE!" instead of "TAKE ME TO THE SEA!"

Again, not a bad or good thing. Just something worth pointing out.

For the record, I find the examples you listed to be, for the most part, matters of creative license. They go with what they think works best, sounds dramatically realistic, and fits the mouth flaps. After close to 300 eps, any small personal gripes as to their word choices should be looked at in perspective.

However, there have been some cases of creative liberties that contradict current or future events. After Alabasta, for example, the dub script has Smoker talk about how Zoro killed Daz Bones when the Japanese script left it as more simply defeating him, for good reason as we later see. Also in that period before Jaya, the Straw Hat crew in the dub talks about how they have now have 3 people with bounties on board, when in reality they only knew of 2; Zoro's new bounty was only discovered before riding to Skypiea.

I know I should have mentioned those! I actually dont have any problem with them taking creative license with dialogue, but I do think its an interesting thing to discuss. Those are unfortunate mistakes though(The Ones you mentioned).

Most of the examples you listed ("ogress," "take me to the sea," etc.) are just paraphrased lines. They mean the exact same thing and they sound a bit more natural. This kind of thing happens all the time because translations vary depending on who the one is translating it and who the one is adapting said line for the English dialogue script.

Also, as Shift said, mouthflaps matter too.

                  True, very true.

Translating is a very dificult art.

Skypiea mistakes are forgiveable in my eyes because of the fact they just got the dub rights before the arc… the Daz Bones mistake, though, is another story completely...

Turn on subtitles while watching any of the DVD's and you will see more similarities than differences in the dub. It's quite fascinating.

for Onibaba, i think it's because they don't have the exact word to translate it. I mean, what should they call for a demon with old woman appearance who like to eat kids/baby ?

Mostly it was things that were out of character, like Zoro using fancy words such as "façade", or Robin being more sarcastic. And leaving out running jokes like Luffy's "So it's a Mystery So-and-so".

Ogress usually more identical with female(?) monster with a huge strong body, (Old) witch seems more appropriate with Japanese Onibaba, because i think the jokes here for what annoyed Nami, aside being called Oni (demon), is the -baba part (old woman or old hag?).
So, if they use Ogress, they got the "oni" part but miss the -baba part and change it to huge humanoid Nami. While with cannibal, they only get the "oni" part and leave the rest to the viewer imagination…

Its supposed to be an insult aimed squarely at Nami. The old part isnt as needed for the joke.
