I hope there's an out for all this since having Godzilla job to Kong after two movies would be weird and making Kong a sympathetic figure just to lose to Godzilla wouldn't be any better.
Oh no, there goes Tokyo. It's a Godzilla thread!
-
-
Sorry, Kong, nobody's better than Godzilla.
And I thought they made peace (sorta) with Godzilla last movie?
-
Kong is so fucking ugly.
-
I wonder what's pissing Big G off so much; maybe he can sense Ghidorah reviving somewhere but can't find him and is blaming humans for it.
I hope there's an out for all this since having Godzilla job to Kong after two movies would be weird and making Kong a sympathetic figure just to lose to Godzilla wouldn't be any better.
Having them fight more than once with each winning one time and then getting interrupted in the last fight by whatever is turning Godzilla against humanity would take care of that.
-
@All:
Kong is so fucking ugly.
Well I don't think he was meant to be cute.
-
So at 1:42 we see a a screen in the background with an exoskeleton which looks like Godzilla and some cut off words which most likely say "Primary Systems: Maximum Charge". Hmmmm. I wonder what that could mean …

More damningly, there's actually something in the first few seconds of the trailer.

I looked at it again and damn, i think you're right. I wonder if they'll show it clearer in another trailer (i hope not) or if it is maybe just to spark conversation.
-
Godzilla and Kong will trade blows evenly until
! MechaGodzilla shows up and they both team up against it, eventually pacifying Godzilla after achieving victory.
-
0:04 Mecha Godzilla?
1:27 shut up and take my money
@All:Kong is so fucking ugly.
As opposed to him being a sexy mother fucker in the original.
-
When I first watched that trailer, I wondered if the film was going the Mechagodzilla route and what they thought was Godzilla was actually a fake but decided against it since that would be out of tone for the Legendaryverse. MechaGhidorah or a MUTO Gigan would be one thing but a MechaGodzilla capable of passing off as the real one?
Stuff like that makes me wonder though.

I do like that of all the film studios that have tried to build franchise universes since Avengers… its randomly the Godzilla films that managed it.
This is probably going to be the last one given the box office hasn't been great on any of them, and covid is going to crash its earnings further, but...

It's never gonna top this battle, so why even try.:ninja:

Even then, it's only been 4 films across two IPs. Not that great an achievement.

Even then, it's only been 4 films across two IPs. Not that great an achievement.
Not counting DC and Star Wars which are their own built in juggernauts, no other studio has managed to fresh start a cinematic universe in the 10 years since Avengers and everyone WANTED to make it happen.
Heck, not even a cinematic universe… what was the last franchise that made it to 4 films in under a decade? Even James Bond only managed three films in the last twelve years. Hunger Games? Twilight? Planet of the Apes? Alvin and the Chipmunks?
I guess Fast and the Furious is a thing.
Even making it to 4 films is a pretty big deal.
-
Even James Bond only managed three films in the last twelve years.
I mean, over a 10-year span, starting with Casino Royale in '06 and Spectre in 2015, that's 4 Bond films. Depending how far back you go, but just timeline-wise, they exceeded 3 within a decade.
I made the mistake of watching the GvK trailer (finally, something to replace BvS as the thing we think of when the word 'vs' comes up) as part of a review (the Angry Joe Show) so it was just in that tiny little window of the corner of their screen, but I'm still intrigued. All I could think of was "Whosever holds this hammer, if they be worthy, shall possess the power of Kong."
-

I'm not talking about ever. I'm talking specifically about the last ten years since Avengers when studios have been trying to make big series, with the current Hollywood industry..
Otherwise you can also point to Harry Potter and the Road To… movies and the original Universal Monsters and Karate Kid and Rocky and Rambo and Friday the Thirteenth and Spiderman ...
That there have historically been franchises that made it to 4+ outings in a 10 year frame isn't completely unprecedented, but it's rare. Especially lately. Pirates of the Carribean managed 4 films in 9 years, and 5 in 15. Indiana Jones managed a fourth film after decades.
Godzilla himself has had 36 films (four of them american) and depending on the era you look at, anywhere between 0 and 9 movies in a ten year period, with generally a pretty regular output except for 75-84..

Oh glorious, glorious cheese.
-
I was wondering how Kong would be able to fare against Godzilla’s heat breath, looks like they gave him a giant axe to help
-
Reviews are out, looks like some pretty good reviews, it’s got a 77%
Seems like it’s mostly about Kaiju on Kaiju action and not much of the human characters

That's good to hear. Can't wait to watch it myself.

I know right! It comes out on Wednesday I think?
Are you gonna watch it on HBO MAX or see it in theaters?

Most likely in theaters. Don't have HBO MAX. I'm just hoping this one does well at the box office. What happened to KotM was a crock of shit.
-

NOTHING is going to do well at the box office until late this year or sometime next year. Covid is still keeping things down and people don't want to go out for movies if it means risking plague.
Once more vaccinations have circulated then movies can do well again.
-
-
and people don't want to go out for movies if it means risking plague.
The intelligent people anyway.
-
Without spoilers, this movie was pretty fun and good but boy did I end with a giant that's it? Do not go into this film expecting it to say….anything about anything. It's by far and away the most cartoonish one of the Legendary films. I guess they finally learned no one cares about the over dramatized pretentiousness of the other films and just went fuck it, let's do a goofy showa era Godzilla/Kong film. Even then I feel the movie was too long and had too many extraneous things going on. Visually gorgeous though. The shit they did with colors in this film makes me wish I saw it in theaters.
-
! That's probably the best showing a Mechagodzilla has ever gotten.
-
You think they’ll make any more of these movies?
-
Godzilla vs. Kong was fun for what it was.
! Definitely was more Kong's movie and I do wish Godzilla had gotten more screen time. But I suppose he does have two of his own movies, so…
! Also, kinda weird how Kong has to be given a magic axe to stand a chance against Godzilla (and he still loses anyway).
! On that note, kudos to the filmmakers for not chickening out and giving us a clear winner. I guess.
! Mechagodzilla was cool, even if he looked a little Transformers-y -
You think they’ll make any more of these movies?
I hope so, they haven't gone for Gamera so far.
Also, pretty sure they have created a ton of 'Baron Zemos' out there, since Godzilla kills random people in every movie.
They never needed "eco-terrorist", there's sure lotta people wanting all Kaijus gone.
-
I hope so, they haven't gone for Gamera so far.
Gamera is a different studio and would take a whole different bout on contract negotiation to work.
And it's not a good idea for the American films anyway. No one here knows who Gamera is outside of being a Godzilla ripoff, or MST3K fodder. (The later movies were good but no one knows them) . It'd be a very uneven match in terms of public understanding and bias.
It would HAVE to be a Japanese film, and I think the studios would have a hard time coming to any agreement on who the winner needed to be.
It would be kind of like having Godzilla vs. Ultraman. Sure it maybe sounds like an idea, but… it just wouldn't work.
-
! A pretty cool thing the movie did is make it clear that Kong really has no chance when Godzilla fights seriously, but has some advantages that make it not a total curbstomp (like using tools, being more agile, and being incredibly clever with his surroundings.)
! Getting a shot of Kong atop a skyscraper holding a crane was just a bonus. -
Watched Shin Godzilla yesterday. I'd heard it took aim at the woes of bureaucracy and…yeah, absolutely. At times it feels almost like a satire (in an intentional way), but in a post-Corona world it also feels like "How bad could a real-life government bungle the response to an unforeseen natural disaster, which happens to be Godzilla in this case". Godzilla here is probably my favourite incarnation of him I've seen so far, he's incredibly gnarly, and his first atomic breath sequence is something else. But even though Godzilla himself is terrifying, I wish the movie had mined a bit more terror from him - he destroys a lot of stuff, but theres not so much sense of the direct human misery inflicted by him. The movie could've also trimmed 10 minutes or so, it sags a bit between the second big Godzilla setpiece and the final showdown. Still, an interesting flick, also when it ""just"" follows characters chafing at the political system and trying to get stuff done.
In general, I've been watching a bunch of kaiju movies recently, and so far, I don't really find the notion that "The human bits always suck, thats just what these movies are" to be universally true. Like, OG Godzilla was great in that regard obviously, but the human bits were the best parts of Mothra too, and the Gamera movies are enhanced by silly human antics (in the second one the human characters are embroiled in an indy-style trasure hunt with backstabbings and whatnot, and the greedy villain tries stealing the giant diamond the heroes are using to lure away the evil Kaiju! I love it!). In the original King Kong vs Godzilla, Kong is brought into the mix because a pharmaceutical company wants him in order to boost the ratings of their science program, which is an amazing idea, and the further the movie moves from this plot the more boring it gets. By far the worst one I've seen so far was Destroy All Monsters, where the All-Star monster lineup can't compensate for some deathly dull human bits.
-
@Daz:

Huh, strange. You'd think Hideaki Anno would be all about that.

Having seen most of the Godzilla films, I agree this assessment. The human stories are generally pretty hit-and-miss. Not that any of them (so far) are masterful works of drama, but some are entertaining enough.
Honestly, one of my favorites is Ebirah, Horror of the Deep, where I think the human stuff is better than the kaiju stuff. Yes, the story is dumb as hell, but my god it's entertainingly dumb.

This. 100%
-
I can just say that for all the Kaiju movies I've liked best so far, the human bits have been a huge part of that. Whether its to give actual gravitas and consequence to Godzilla stomping around, articulate the movies themes (like Serisawa in OG Godzilla or the whole appropriation of indegenous cultures theme which is like…the entirety of Mothra), or by lending goofy personality and charm to the proceedings, like the precocious kid who has all the right answers for how to deal with Gamera and his foe.
When its just the monster stomping paper mache houses and toy thanks commanded by bland army officials for minutes on end I quickly lose interest, and so far the Kaiju brawls themselves have only been marginally better (for reference: Destroy all monsters, Kong vs Godzilla (original) Gamera vs Gyaos and Gamera vs Baragon are the only ones with Kaiju brawls I've watched, so it hopefully gets better. Godzilla vs Hedora is the one I have my eyes on now...)
-
@Daz:
Godzilla vs Hedora is the one I have my eyes on now…
Oh yeah, that one. That's, uh…something special (honestly, the whole movie is)
-
I've started watching Hedorah. First off, what is up with this score?? Its…a lot. Especially the goofy as shit they've given Godzilla, even as he's introduced in a glorious sunset. Theres also major Gamera energy with the precocious kid naming the terrifying new monster.
Now the monsters are doing sign language!
I'm enjoying myself though
-
Is anyone else watching Godzilla: Singular Point?
I can't get the opening out of my head.
-
Got done watching Godzilla vs the Sea Monster, picking it based off remembering Nobodyman liking it.
I liked it a lot! One of the better classic Kaiju movies I've seen, probably my third favorite japanese Godzilla so far, fourth Godzilla over all. An usual pitfall for me with these movies have been the human parts being dull as dishwater, and the monster parts underwhelming or repetitive paper-mache stomping sessions. I found this movie an improvement on both counts. The human part is zany, devoid of serious scientists and military officials, and theres characters coming up with various plans to counter the villains, a nuke-producing James-Bond-esque evil militia (???), including waking up Godzilla, who is still not so much benign as he is a force of destruction that may help or hinder you depending on pure chance. I even thought Ebira, and Godzillas fight with him, were entertaining - they have a veritable tennis section with giant boulders! Godzilla RIPS HIS CLAWS OFF, and then as Ebira slinks away in pain, Gojira is mockingly playing with a claw like its a giant toy! I love it! If theres any more Godzilla movies on this wavelength I'm definetely there; vs Hedora had some of the same energy, but the human plotline felt a lot more stock.
-
Glad you liked it Daz! Off the top of my head, I'm not sure there are too many Godzilla films that have the same energy or zaniness, but you may get a kick out of Godzilla vs. Megalon (incidentally, that and Sea Monster are the two Godzilla films MST3K riffed).
As for me, I've been making my way through the 90's and 00's Godzilla movies (only four more till I finish every single Godzilla movie, minus the anime movies, which I presently have no plans of watching). Honestly, I don't have too much to say about them. I mean, yeah, they're Godzilla movies, but they all kinda blend together for me. The plots and monsters differ, but they all have the same essential tone and feel to them. The last one I watched though, Godzilla, Mothra and King Ghidorah: Giant Monsters All-Out Attack (goddamn that title), has gotta be one of the grimmest entries in the franchise. Godzilla goes full evil mode and has dead white eyes and they really dwell on all the death and destruction he causes. But I suppose the move is notable for, I think, being the first/only time Ghidorah is a benevolent figure.

That movie is batshit insane even by the standards of Millennium Godzilla, it has Godzilla as the agent of vengeance for everyone who died because of the Japanese Empire and the movie doesn't really seem to settle on how to handle this.
-
If I remember right, the original plan by GMK's director was to showcase monsters that were obviously a lot weaker than Godzilla and that hadn't had much screen time in years if they ever had after their initial film. So it was something like Barugon, Anguirus, and Varan but Toho blocked that with the demand that he use Ghidorah and Mothra instead of the last two since they were more popular.
That they kept Baragon instead of Anguirus is a bit odd when the reason for the shuffle was the popularity of the monsters involved but Toho seems to have some weird internal politics about how Anguirus can be used. It's really hard to license him as a result but even in their own films he's been reduced to a bit player if he even appears at all.
-
Shin Godzilla was seriously great. Even though there aren't any particularly deep or intesting human characters, the movie manages to keep you interested in the human story with the sheer rapid pace of all the events unfolding. And Godzilla himself has never been more threatening.
Godzilla Final Wars felt like it should have been an awesome movie with them throwing nearly every monster at the screen and having a ludicrously out-there human plot, but…I think they actually made it a little too crazy. Or, rather, I guess the movie lacked focus and had one too many things going on. Also, maybe it was just the video I was watching, but the production values seemed really low even for Godzilla. At times, it felt like I was watching an Asylum movie.
And with that I've officially seen every single Godzilla movie (not counting the anime films, which, agian, I don't plan on watching).
-
Finally got to see Godzilla Vs. Kong. Goddamn, what a ride. How is it that the soulless, joyless mess that was King of the Monsters, which was full of them, was so inferior to the follow-up where the focus was on just the two of them? It's like, Godzilla was boring and Kong: Skull Island was phenomenal. Why is the simple inclusion of Kong able to elevate these Kaiju flicks so much? Though I have to say, watching Kong's movements and everything throughout the combat sequences is beautiful, compared to the clunky Godzilla. That probably has a lot to do with it. Hope there's room for more but probably not likely with that climactic crossover.

The official Youtube channel is uploading Godzilla Island; new episodes will be added on Tuesdays and Thursdays.

@Ubiq I instantly love this. And apparently there 256 episodes of this.
