Welp, I hoped they would strike while iron is hot, and finish somewhere in late 2016-early 2017, maybe a little earlier. Most of conceptual groundwork is done anyway.
And now it doesn't seem likely.At least Gamera 2015 is still happening.

That shot with Mothra was really great. Looks like they are really trying to get the monsters right, like Rodan coming out of a volcano.

The half second glimpses we got of the monsters were cool.
Everything else is way too pretentious and serious for a Godzilla film that isn't the original one.
But if they're in the movie for more than 2 minutes this time maybe I'll go.

Started watching the Godzilla movies. Only one I'd watched before now was the American one in the late 90s or whenever it came out. Watched the first one and Mothra vs. Godzilla so far. Some people think the effects look dumb, and while it can add some cheese at points I think they're really well done. It's always nice seeing "real" effects rather than CGI. The end "fight" of Mothra vs. Godzilla was kind of a letdown though.

Final Wars is my favorite (love the director, too, he's my favorite Japanese filmmaker), but when I was younger I loved Son of Godzilla. So hilarious. A real bitch to try to find it on DVD, though. Why are there so many awesome underrated movies that are so hard to find a hard copy of outside of VHS?

Let's be honest, they're trying to make the humans sympathetic victims, but everyone would only be going for the monsters. I only learned recently that Mothra is female. I guess it's because I only watched a couple Godzilla films as a kid. Question is: will they include Mothra's little fairy servants?

Based on what I'm hearing, it sounds like you'll really like this movie if you're a Godzilla/monster movie fan. And if you're not then perhaps not so much.
But I fall into the former category, so yeah, I'm all for this. Of course, I was going to see it anyway.

I haven't seen any Godzilla movie since that 90s version (bleh), and before that I only saw a few of the old classics on tv. Which is actually why I love Mothra the best because that was the movies I saw her in. But this sounds definitely promising.

It's insanely stupid. But you do get more monster fighting than in 2014 Godzilla. But I find it difficult to express just how STUPID this movie is.
I think its maximum value is as a drunk movie where everyone is howling at how bad the script is and how much enjoyment there is in the cg monster backyard wrestling.

It's a Kaiju film. I don't know why you would expect or want anything else.

When were Kaiju movies ever not stupid? I can think of only the very first Godzilla film, being a true comment on the nuclear bombs.

Saw the movie, I was a big fan….. Not nearly as much as moviebob though
But seriously what more can you want/expect from a series that at it's core is simply about having giant monsters fight each other, it's basically the Godzilla movie we've been waiting for since we were kids

I haven't watched that MovieBob review so I don't know if he went over this as well but this film is, to me anyway, really one big love letter to the '90s Toho films, both the Godzilla series and Rebirth of Mothra series (plus a healthy dose of the '90s novel series). Tons of references to those films throughout including the post-credits scene. If you just like the Showa Godzilla films, you might not get as much out of it as you would if you like the Heisei films but there's still a lot of Godzilla fanservice to like.
Also there's nothing in this entire film that I felt was a tenth as stupid as every single scene in the Hobbs & Shaw trailer that ran before it.

I appreciate that the inspiration for how Ghidorah acts in this movie is based off his forebears, the Three Stooges.

Movie flopped. After Kong v Zilla is out, which is already shot and is getting the post production treatment right now, then the whole Legendary Monsterverse is over.

It came in on the low end of the studio projection and has made its budget on the worldwide box office. That's not a flop especially after the opening weekend.
A disappointment, sure, especially with it opening that far below Godzilla and Kong of Skull Island but the word flop is thrown around way too much these days.

I've often wondered about that myself; seems like being supported by people who only want you there so the world can end in fire (with you going to Hell in the process) would be somewhat off-putting

I'm seriously not sure what the critics are smoking, they loved Godzilla 2014, gave it an 84% on Rotten Tomatoes, which was a totally awful movie
and now we have probably the best Godzilla movie of all time and is infinitely better then 2014…. and they give it a 39% on Rotten Tomatoes

Anguirus is the biggest name they didn't have but Toho is well known for their brutal licensing fees and he's the least well known of the five.
It's possible that they originally intended Methusaleh to be Anguirus and gave the former a design that could be shifted over to make him the latter if something could be worked out.

Saw the movie tonight and had an absolute blast. Had a stupid grin on my face the whole time. All the criticisms are valid, but I didn't give a damn. It was a ton of fun to watch.
I loved how the worked the classic Godzilla and Mothra scores into the movie. Very nice touch.

Just saw the movie. I pretty much agree with the consensus that the human parts were dull (but passable) and the monster parts were fun. I'm not sure I enjoyed as much as some people (certainly not as much as MovieBob), but I did enjoy it. It was good time.
And with that, I think now might be a good time for me to finally check out all the old Japanese Godzilla films.

The human part is totally sacrificed to serve the Monster part. I don't have a problem with that because the monster scenes are all that I care XD. I go to a cinema only because I want to experience the fantastic visual and audio effects rather than to watch a story. It was perfect for me! Michael Dougherty manages to serve the fans well.

As someone whos only ever watched Godzilla '98 and Kong movies, one thing that sort of baffles me with the attitude towards the Godzilla franchise are all the caveats that and excuses that apply to them, but not seemingly to anything else.
When people go "The human parts ALWAYS suck in Godzilla movies! What do people expect?" I'm just wondering…surely the human parts weren't designed to suck? Surely they attempt to have distinct characters, drama, maybe even arcs - and ideally, the audience should like these things? As is the case with pretty much any other film, ever? Saying that everything sucking except Godzilla, who may not be featured all that much, is a staple of a 60 year old franchise just makes me think "They never managed to improved those other bits in 60 years"? Ideally, both the monster bits and the human bits, all the bits, should be good, surely?Idunno, to me it sounds like a defense akin to "Why are you bothered that James Bond is depicted as charming despite being a creepy, sexist predator? Its ALWAYS been like this!"
