According to the viz editors on the shonen jump podcast, they've heard there might be connections to dragonball in this manga, though they haven't yet seen it themselves

I do hope this turns out to be 80% gag and 20% action much like Dr. Slump (according to the article it DID say this is going to be a comedy which is infinitely a good thing). I always felt Toriyama was at his finest when he was making light-hearted parodies rather than "I'm the world's strongest creature that's going to explode the world" sort of stories.
To be fair with Kintoki, it would have been much…MUCH better if it were a short serie rather than a rushed story with hastily inserted exposition (squashed into 30pgs which should have been spread to 40-50pgs). Interesting premise with a lot of promise, but it was pretty much a waste since it was merely a One shot. At least it had Toriyama's art which is always appealing.
Overall, since this is going to be a comedy, I am confident that it will at least be decent since comedy is Toriyama's strong point. Even if it turns out to be lame, at least we get more charming Toirayama art.

If it's a Toriyama comedy it will probably have (at least) one pervy character. Some of his best gags have come from the lasciviousness of Kame Sen'nin and Dr. Senbei, among others. I hope we get to see more of that again.

If it's in the same universe as Dragon Ball he's probably Freeza/Cooler level.

I love how the alien casually sais he has a mass destructive weapon in his pocket which can extinguish the whole human race. -
I could define every Toriyama's work after DB with one word: "Passionless".

It was okay, though if anyone other than Toriyama made this, there's no way it would be published. Still, I'm interested to see what the next few chapters will bring, since this one brought up some interesting concepts.

It was a little bland, but I liked both characters. Jaco's action poses during his monologue were great.

Toriyama should not use screentone. It doesn't lend itself well to his work here.
And yes, despite having however much time he wanted to spend, the art is only okay here, nothing compared to his earlier work. (Though maybe he just lacks the assistants that did background work before)

I doubt it; Toriyama has drawn that same hat at least as far back as the Cell Games.

Even before that. The audience of the first Tenkachi Budokai is full of straw hats. Is still fun to see in Jaco a character appearance with a straw hat that makes the reader connect it to One Piece.

It looks better in the original magazine.
Whatever the scanlators are doing, it's flattening the tones into single, cold and hard monotones.
The original art is a lot softer, and IMO better looking.And yeah, they removed the English simulcast note, as well as the URL, clearly printed in page 28 (2nd black & white page), linking to Viz.
Assholes.

While I gladly read mangastreams tranlations over mangapandas, since I unfortunately still have no ability to read it legally where I live, I wouldn't mind if ms got shut down for good so they wouldn't be able to make as much money as they probably do.

I enjoyed the first chapter. Felt a bit sad reading it though, due to the foreword where Toriyama mentioned that this will probably be the last manga he'll make entirely on his own.

Read the viz translation, and it just did nothing for me. I mean the jokes had potential, but felt kind of stale to me, and almost none took advantage of the comic book format, and those that did just didn't get to me

Honestly the story was very "meh" and I would have dismissed it if it were not for Toriyama's name and design (though it seemed a bit bland this time around). Heck, the comedy wasn't all that interesting either. Since it's Toriyama though, I'll still give it the benefit of the doubt and follow it to see where he's planning to go with this.

The incoming UFO carrying a dangerous alien (pod carrying baby Kakarot?)
Oomori sounds suspiciously related to Son Gohan (Oomori gohan = extra large serving of rice), as well as his wife's name also being rice related.
The mysterious "DB11" under the chapter count, 1/10+1

…. H...Have you even read Kajika, Neko Majin, Cowa! and Sand Land? Super full of passion and spark. Like... more so than later Dragon Ball, I'd say. Far less of that fatigue to his work. I don't... I just... No, c'mon now. Seriously?
Anyway, yeah, I loved this opening chapter, viz did a crack-up job and it had this great nostalgic feel that reminded me of the less bombastic, charming comics of yore, not entirely different to how early chapters of Kiruko-san had me feeling. Soft comedy, innit. Got good hopes for where it'll go.
EDIT: looks up at aohige's post GOD DAMN, well spotted, I didn't even think of making connections like that.
