Arlong Park sure have change seeing how admirals have now become top contenders.
Preliminary Round Discussion Thread

It would be awesome if Akainu advance and we had a Akainu vs Aokiji match.
–- Update From New Post Merge ---
Just looked at the results. Forgot Akainu won. First time I think all Admirals made it past the prelims.
-
He's coming.
!
-
Movie characters aren't canon until shown in the manga. End of story.
So cold Dryish is :cwy
-
He's coming.
If Pagaya were actually papaya I'd be more inclined to vote him.
-
I think he is called that in German
-
I think he is called that in German
You are correct. The German dub sure chose some weird names. Doc Bader, Lysop, Puma D. Ace (how appropriate)… Wasn't Going Merry called the Sheep Head or something like that?
-
Honestly I'm surprised people in Germany even know what a papaya is.
-
Honestly I'm surprised people in Germany even know what a papaya is.
Of course we do. We even made a song about papayas.
-
What the hell did I just watch O_O
-
I think he is called that in German
I…probably knew that. :ninja:
The Going Merry is called Flying Lamb. I know that. :P
-
Of course we do. We even made a song about papayas.
lol, I remember mentioning that in a Skype call last year and guy cracked up, because he actually thought about Pagaya. xD
And I wouldn't have as much trouble with the German names, if they would at least keep it consistent. We've got e.g. Blaufasan (Bluepheasant), Blauer Fasan (Blue Pheasant), Ao Kiji & Aokiji for Kuzan. Sengoku was first called Senghok, then for about one volume Sengoku and then back to Senghok again…
-
Don't forget Binami the Dachshund… Not anime tho..
-
Seriously, how come everyone votes for Huschel's obsessive campaigns but not mine?
-
'cause he's not bitching about it.

You root for the wrong (read: unpopular) characters and don't put that much effort into making the campaigns yourself, nor in making sure that they are neutral, friendly, and all around agreeable.
Huschel is one of the best known mellow guys on the forum that has charmed and been friendly to many for so long that people look at his works with warmth and applaud him for the feat, whereas you generally come off as a pestering lobbyist type who is trying to tell people what they should like and how they should like it. That never works; especially not here where people value their individuality more than anything else.
Try being open and humble for a change. See where that takes you.
-
…
There are no wrong characters! Only wrong attitude.
And of course relentless hate, but that is part of the game, is it? -

What the…that's such a nice thing to say, Dry. The part where it's about me, I mean...
Anyway, thank you so much.
Best known mellow guy? There must not be many of those around. :P

And of course relentless hate, but that is part of the game, is it?Yes there is: Gecko Moriah.
But nah, you're right. What I basically mean is that it's just a lot easier to campaign for an established character with a personality and physically (virtually?) more material to work into campaigns than to single-handedly forge a vast enough backing for someone like Dellinger whom most people probably don't even recognize. It's not impossible to turn a total nobody into a winner with some imagination and a lot of effort, but doing so is immensely difficult and requires the sort of delicacy and knowledge of the common opinions and feelings surrounding each character here that you can't possibly even have before experiencing a full tournament.

And its a lot more boring since they win basically by themselves. More obscure characters on the other hand, a lot more interesting to support… Yeah, I still (silently) lament Owlfish.
And whats up with not liking Moriah?! he has most imaginative campaigns out there! -
I hate Moriah.
And Beka (not really, it's just a thing from the past that still lives on).I don't think there's any other manga character that I would despise as much on a personal level.
-

And whats up with not liking Moriah?! he has most imaginative campaigns out there!I would call characters like Brownbeard or Pagaya established as well, and they're not winning by themselves. And I actually think those are the most fun to campaign for. What you guys did with Owlfish and stuff was great, but I much rather prefer a character who gets awesome campaigns, but also had a good part in the story in his own right.
Though I did the same with Mario. The only reason I ever campaigned for him however is…that I had the idea for the campaign with Shanks' arm. xD
-
I'm having a lot of fun campaigning for characters that could progress, but might not. Characters which are too popular (ie: Zoro, Crocodile) don't really need it (in the preliminaries, anyway), and others face a massive uphill struggle to get anywhere, where a campaign might help boost their votes, but would be unlikely to change the qualifiers. Certainly it can be much harder to campaign for some characters than others, and whilst the Dellinger campaign had some good and inventive moments, the fact remains he had one panel and we don't know anything about him (Owlfish also had one panel, and there's probably nothing more to know about it, but you'll also note that despite massive campaigning from several different members, the l'il fishbird also didn't make it).
Also, it's best not to take this kind of thing personally. Campaigns have an effect, but it's only ever going to be to a limited extent (due to people who vote without reading the thread, for example, or the fact that however much you promote Kuro, he's up against some very popular characters). Do it for the fun of the fandom, test your creative ability, and see if you can get a few extra votes (or even just raise some smiles), but don't necessarily expect anything.

For what it's worth, it made me laugh more than anything I've seen online in months :D

I just think campaigns really make all the show different and unique, so we shouldn't really dismiss them as just way to earn some bonus points.
They are like 70% of the fun, so... -

There you err, Miss, and pretty badly too. It might be hard to grasp the nature of the later rounds right now (having only skimmed through last year's threads instead of actually living them - although admittedly I don't know how much you've lurked the tournament), but that is most certainly not the case after the one-on-one matches begin and even less so during the later rounds where campaigns start playing an increasingly big role when people are having hard times deciding between two equally but differently awesome characters.
Yeah, it's true that, at this point, campaigns only really propel characters that are not shoe-ins or forgettable side characters, but the very nature of campaigning always undergoes a slight change once it all becomes centered on single matches. Generally speaking, you don't even get to see the most advanced campaigns and campaigning styles until later on in the tournament. The biggest fun is yet to come.

Sorry, I should have stated in my post that I was only speaking about the preliminaries! I'm well aware that things get more interesting and more developed when we get the head-to-heads - I did look over much of last year's tournament before really participating in this year's one.
That said, I'm looking forward to getting to actually live it.

And I don't want to diminish anything you guys did for Owlfish. But a character, who gets votes just for himself and also gets good campaigns, is more likely to advance than a character, who only has the campaigns.
To be honest, I'm also a little bit tired of all the joke characters. A few are okay, but they're just so many already…
-

Sorry if it has looked like I've been forcing to people to like and dislike characters. I admit that I often have very strong opinions and I also tend to voice them loudly (i.e. my dislike for suppoting random cute animals), but I do unterstand that you can't just force people to agree with whatever opinions you have and I haven't even tried. Maybe I have gone a little overboard a couple of times but for the most part I've just been curious about what others see about a certain character that I don't? It's not like you can find out without asking! But you're right! There's probably gonna be a lot more outcomes in this tournament that I don't like and questioning them all fills it with nothing but pointless ranting! I've been really childish here, and I'm sorry!
EDIT: I guess I was also a little jealous! Here in Arlong Park it seems to be kinda fashion that if one user supports and campaigns for a minor character enough, he becomes a vote-puller, like with Nia and Hattori or Huschel and Pagaya. But when I tried to campaign for Dellinger it wasn't nearly as succesful! So I got a little annoyed and wanted to understand why; was it because Pagaya (even with his relatively small role) had had more screentime than Delly or because Huschel has been here longer. I probably should have asked that more politely.

Can I request for Blackbeard's name to be changed to "Chocheh" for the next round?

I can not hear 'Chocheh' without picturing someone from Manchester/Yorkshire/The North asking for some chocolate.

I live up in Yorkshire and that is true.
Keep your campaigns coming, I find myself voting for everyone you campaign for because they are great. -
I feel sad cause I was gonna bust out ALLLL of the Koala campaigns but then I had an off moment and was offline for the match (I spoke via my phone in other places btw if you're weondering)

Shanks' match?
Depending on your campaign I might vote for him alone since he's my favourite character.
I look forward to your campaign anyway! I wish I could campaign like you do, if I tried I'd probably make people vote against them… :ermm: -

In any case, I had a lot of fun making them. If you have an idea just go for it~

It seems those long breaks between matches are intentional.

Moria is the only character that can save this 'after timeskip' average at best manga:ninja::ninja:

sigh It sucks to see Lucci lose, especially to Jabra of all people. :(
But no biggie. I was too damn tired from my job to make any campaigns for him, plus I got my hands on a rare copy of one of my most favorite fighting games of all-time yesterday and played the hell out it to even care about the tournament.

This already made the tournament for me. It's no shame to lose against Buggy, Rayleigh, Kuma or Blackbeard…but Lucci?
Thanks for saving Jabra from losing face. I won't forget it, good people!

Taking a break (check Post how your day was thread for details on the length) soyeah…
I entrust the fate of the characters in your hands!
Might pop on for the last prelims but yes...
