I was re-watching ep.69 and noticed that Garp told coby that he'll look into his friend, and he oviously meant luffy. Does anyone know or has it been confirmed if he's looking for luffy? Cause if he is looking it will spell big trouble for the straw-hats, though it would be awesome to see him again…
Vice Admiral Garp & Luffy (Maybe Spoilers)

I think it was because i pressed submit a new thread, but relized the spoiler thing. It shouln't have happened though because I pressed stop. Hmm odd.
Anyways can a mod or admin lock or delete it or whatever?

What do you mean by "look into his friend". I don´t get what that statement has to mean.

Near the end of ep.69, after garp fought with coby and helmeppo he clearly said," I'll look into your friend." He oviously was talking about Luffy. And as for what it means, that's why I created this thread.

Wasn't it a filler? >_>
Like Admiral Nelson from the Apis Arc… >_> (Nico Robin says that Ao Kiji is one of the three admirals, and Nelson isn't one of them. :E)

Nope wasn´t a filler. This episodes are based on the CobyMeppo title page story and therefore are manga cannon.
But the Nelson crap was definitely filler. Yuck

**No Garp was in the manga to, as far as I know….
EDIT: Ivotas beat me to it **
-
Yeah, Garp was in the manga, but the scene in which he said that was definitely filler. There's no dialogue in the mini-stories, apart from the ocassional line or two at the bottom.
-
i dont put much trust in something thats only been in the Anime,
but i would seriously love to see Garp and especialy Bogart again.
those two are probalby some of the coolest marines ever. -

I see. Never read the manga at that point. Though I would still want to see garp or coby and helmeppo again.
-
Erm, somebody actually wanna fill me in what "looking into someone´s friend" means actually. No matter if it is cannon or not? <_<

Remember when Coby and Helmeppo found out luffy's bounty, coby said Luffy is my friend. Helmeppo told him to shutup because he could get kicked out but Garp already heard. He questioned them, and cobymeppo said yes they are his friends. Then garp tld them to fight him and lost horribly. Then Garp clearly says "I'll look into your friend."

Was Bogart the dude in the suit and katana?

@Janken:

Yep that's him. And he is the awesome, besides Garp.

I remember that entire episode and the scene in question. I just didn´t get what "I´ll look into your friend" means. The words just didn´t make any sense.
But don´t worry I´ve just checked that scene for myself and Garp says "I´ll overlook that 'friend' of yours".
It was just your wording that gave me serious trouble to understand what´s going on.
-
''I'll look into it'' is a phrase commonly used in the English language to express a desire to research or put further investigations into the afore-mentioned ''it''. Hence Octogon's comments.

Ha, sorry about that. It doesn't make a huge differnce now that we find out he really didn't say it since that part was filler.
-
Well I was just curious about what that typo of yours meant, because it didn´t make any logic sense to me.
Besides even if it wasn´t filler this statement doesn´t mean much. What serious trouble could happen to Garp by overlooking that Luffy is Coby´s friend? Nothing! I mean does that little knowledge that Garp has change the events that take place at Enies Lobby? Or could these events even have been prevented if Garp told everybody that Coby and Luffy are friends? No! So it doesn´t really matter anyway, filler or not.

**It wasn't really a typo, they mean the same thing. And I don't see where you're going. If he was looking for luffy how would it NOT be signifigant to the story? If he was looking for luffy, who said it had to be in enies lobby? You're only thinking about the current arc not the future. Thoug it doesn't matter now…
**

Octogon, I remamber you use to type with a normal print words and no five or six smily faces. Not to be rude but are you high or something? Sorry just poundering.
And I don't don't trust what it's said in the Anime, I olny go what's said in the Manga.

**Ha, that was back then. I've been drinking a LOT of Pepsi now that you mention it…
I go by what's said in the manga to, it's just that I didn't read the manga before skypeia, at all. **

I´m sorry but "looking into someone" and "overseeing someone" are not the same thing. You look into a book by opening and reading the pages. You can´t look into a person except of course you are able to read minds. It definitely doesn´t mean the same.
And I don´t get why it would be significant that Coby and Luffy are friends. Really, it doesn´t make any sense. If you think that it makes sense then please give me an real argument. Because so far you didn´t.
Coby and Luffy are friends and that´s it. Does Coby know where Luffy is? No. Has Coby anything to do with Luffy´s actions since they seperated? No. Coby isn´t responsible for anything the Pirate Luffy has done. So why should actually Garp be blamed if he just knows that Coby and Luffy are friends? It doesn´t make any sense. It´s not like if the WG would know that Coby and Luffy are friends Luffy out of a sudden becomes an easier target to the marine. It wouldn´t change a thing.

You are taking this too litteraly. When someone says I'll look into it they mean they will research into it. In the way I was saying it, it does mean the same thing. But maybe it's different for you.
And I don't get why it would be signifigant that coby and Luffy are friends. Really it doesn't make any sense.
I'm not saying right now but in the long haul. If coby stayed in the village with Morgan (Forgot the name) It wouldn't make a differance, but now there ate the marine HQ under the supervision of a Vice-Admiral. I don't know how it could be, I'm just saying that it's a possibility.

When did I ever say Garp would be blamed? Though if there was no coby there would be no zoro, but that's not the point.

But then it even less isn´t the same thing as overseeing something. Overseeing in the context Garp said it, means that he won´t pay attention to it, while the way you just described it looking into something means to pay attention to it which would actually be the exact opposite. Get what I mean?

I still don´t see what would it change. He once met a pirate before he actually really was one and became friends with him. No matter what Luffy pulls you can´t blame Coby for it, therefore if his friendship to Luffy shouldn´t matter more know then it did before.

Sorry from your first post I understood it that you thought Garp will be blamed because he said that he didn´t want to pay attention to Coby´s relation to Luffy. But now I see that that´s not what you´ve tried to say because you take it as that Garp will pay attention to the friendship, which obviously is not the case.

This really depends on point of view.

I was refering to the fact that Coby might meet luffy in the future. At the very end of one piece. I made a thread about this, and as I recall you agreed. So i'm saying that he has a higher chance of meeting luffy now. I never was blaming coby for anything luffy did, exept find zoro.

That's what I took it as, but not anymore since I found out it was filler.

I´m sorry but that is just plain old dull! In this scene it can´t mean anything else then that Garp will ingore that Luffy is Coby´s friend, because the opposite meaning just doesn´t make sense here.
Coby proudly confessed to Garp that he and Luffy are friends so what the hell is there left for Garp to research? That´s all that he needs to know.
If the situation would be like this that Helmeppo blackmailed Coby and told Garp that Coby and Luffy are friends, but Coby would say that this is a lie, then Garp would have to research what´s the truth. But since Coby already told the truth, what else should be there for Garp to investigate? He already knows it.And since he says "But don´t mention him again." right after "I´ll overlook that 'friend' of yours." it just can´t mean anything else besides that he´ll ignore it. The fact that Coby and Helmeppo seem to be happy to hear those words after they already outted themselves as Luffy friends and the fact that from now on they will even get special training from Bogart don´t allow any other interpretation for Garp´s statement except that it means that he´ll ignore it.

They were happy because they didn't get kicked out of the marines**. I understand that overlook means that he will ignore it, but that's not all that it can mean.**

Yes, and they won´t get kicked out because he will ignore it.
I know that overlook can also be taken differently, but not in this scene.

Yes exactly. The first time I saw it I took overlook as research. As I said before it's all on point of view.
