Thing is, Zoro is awesome without any effort. He is the genius of awesome. He is awesome when doing something as simple as going to a shop to buy a couple of swords, and he is awesome while taking a beating from Kuma.

He just needs to stand there doing nothin', and he is awesome. xD It's not just "because", but it's just what the character was built to be. Everything he does and says is gold. Because Oda decided that's the kind of guy he should be.

The most likely reason someone might not care for him, is because he is… kinda typical. The standart shonen cool guy, that is perfect in almost every way but happens to have one major fault. Like Shin from Eyeshield 21, he was the perfect hard working genius, but he was useless at handling tech, breaking GPS's and computers by just holding them.

Basically this. Believe me, I really enjoyed Sanji's character. That's why it makes me upset to see his character getting dragged through the mud. He's not Mr. Prince right now. That was a time when his womanizing wasn't annoying and being shoved in our faces. Hey look, this little joke is now gonna affect the actual plot too! Look, his nosebleeds are now mermaids!! Just… no. Even though Zoro's also dropped significantly for me in terms of favorite Straw Hats, I still like him more than Sanji, and he was the first character besides Luffy who I really loved.

The problem for me is that Oda decided to only focus on 2 of his traits: He is either angry OR over the top retarded.

While focusing on 1-2 traits works fine with the other Straw Hat's (Brook's jokes, Robins creepy comments, Franky being super etc), Sanji needs balance and paneltime, more than anyone else.

20% Hearteyes
20% Pissed off
60% Keeping his cool

And the 60% simply vanished, he literally lost his cool from Thriller Bark onwards. Even the badass moments at Punk Hazard are tainted by him being angry and overly sensitive. It's a completely different character, really.
I don't know if Oda does it intentionally or if he is simply forced to because so many new characters joined the crew (thus "stealing paneltime"), but I hope he will turn him back to normal over time. He can still play the "it was all because of the Okama's!" card.

Zoro on the other hand gives me nothing. I'm completely neutral there. He is a badass, even more after the timeskip. He has this one gimmick of getting lost. Okay. But that's it.
Of course he had his one really great moment when he sacrificed himself for Luffy, and I guess thats why this godamn picture is used again and again and again and again

! , but to me this only shows that there isn't much more to Zoro.
Don't get me wrong, I believe that he is absolutely necessary and that One Piece wouldn't be the same without him, but he doesn't cut is as a standalone character (and that's what this tournament is about, right?)

So I'm probably going with Sanji, who at least moves me a bit (even if he does in a super annoying way).

Unless the Zoro camp surprises me with some hilarious new marimo capaigns, of course.

Bing badass and awesome and poor sense of direction, aren't only character traits Zoro posses. I find it unfair and unjust, that people think of him that way.

He is somewhat slow at thinking - all the other Straw Hats got immediately the 3D2Y message, Zoro taken his time
he posses deep insight in dynamic of the crew - shown in Water 7
he can come up with good resolutions, both in the affairs of the crew and about enemies actions - again Water 7 and identification problem in Alabasta
he loves to sleep and a good drink
he has older brother relationship with Chopper and is very protective of him
he tends to get a lot of bickering with girls (Nami, Tashigi, Bonney, Perona)
despite how self centered he seems to be, and how much "I don't give a damn" attitude he presents, he seems to be protective about, those weaker than him, be it children, women, normal citizens, weaker crew members
he usually tries to resolve problems with simple, albeit drastic way: attempt to cutting his ow feet, using Sogeking holding a sword as as word, when the two of them were cuffed together, so on…
this fact is not from manga, it is from SBS - Zoro is also one of characters that absolutely cannot dress, oh and speaking about SBS Zoro has some books, but he only look at pictures and diagrams

On the other hand I feel that Sanji too is underestimated. He sure have lately mostly comedic moment, or moments when he starts acting all cool and finishes in the retarded way(for comedic reasons). Somehow people are not able to see through the rule of funny, and tend to believe, that it is all that is to the character.

Mr. Prince is enough reason for me to vote for Sanji. I have faith that this trait will come back soon enough and it's a shame that so many have given up on him simply due to an increase in comedic moments (who were actually gold, with the exception of the excessive nosebleed…) so I don't see where the hate comes from.

By drawing more and more of that instead of developing actually creative gags like he used to do back in the day, Oda is merely pandering to his target audience of young guys. As long as Sanji keeps getting his shining gag moments from stuff like groping Nami's chest, I will refrain from voting him. I honestly find it dull, unimaginative and tasteless.

I dislike Kinemon's character for the exact same reason. There's a load of potential there, but our lovely author is taking the easy route. It's a conscious decision from his part, though, so I can't really blame him. I just wish that he would have chosen differently.

So much this. Sanji's overall character had been getting a little better again, but his childish perversion is still bringing him down. It's just too much for me, I can't really enjoy it or even laugh at it any more

I've got to agree with DarkFalcon. Zoro is much more than just a pure bad-ass-character... what itself would be a reason to vote him xD Honestly his Bad-Assery was the first reason he became my most favorite One-Piece-character. But the more time passed, the more I loved him because of other traits, since there are loads of Bad-Ass-Characters in the Series, and that alone is not enough anymore. He is willing to sacrifice himself for his friends, and I not only think about the thing with Kuma on Thriller Bark. There were plenty of situations, when he tried to save his friends, like Usopp or Chopper. Though he always seems to be an idiot, in important situations he keeps calm, and comes up with good ideas and plans. By the way, there are not many chars in the crew that keep calm in almost every situation. Just Robin and him. Since Brook and Franky joined, he is not the oldest guy anymore, but still appears to be the most mature, what's only one of the reason, the crew can't abandon him. I don't want to go on like this, Zoro surely has his weaknesses, which is the reason, he is not my MOST favorite character anymore... However he occasionally saved the life of my most favorite character right now: Smoker!

I admit you have a good point here and won't try and argue against it, I just guess I don't mind as much as you do. Perhaps I'm still too much a child at heart to find his perverted nature tasteless :ninja:

To be fair though, a lot of Oda's characters go this route at moments. Out of the SH's, there's obviously Sanji, Brook, but Franky, too… I mean, he's even proud of being called a pervert! But then we still have moments of Sanji's chivalry and code of honour, following what he promised and doing everything to get Kinemon's body back together, protecting the children for Nami et cetera. I'll give him my vote.

Let's hope Franky can best Doflamingo's hype. It's funny, I used to have no opinion on Doflamingo, but ever since "Doflamingo's behind everything!1!" became a meme here, I find myself growing annoyed whenever he's mentioned. Not that it matters all that much, since Franky's one of my favorite characters, Straw Hat or otherwise, so (unless he was facing Tashigi) he was guaranteed my vote...

With that mindset Sanji will never win, that's true. It's important to stay positive, to believe in the character you want to see advance and most importantly- to support him. Rather than just say "he's gonna lose, fuck this" you should set a positive example and be like "Alright guys, let's do this! time to kick some moss-head's ass".

But seriously, Sanji does have the best moment in One Piece ever, namely the speach to Usopp back in Enies Lobby. There is no better scene so far, perfectly describing the Straw Hats and OP as a whole.

Well it was already done in the past… but it is god damn Zoro who will get auto votes... he is like the Sasuke of OP... just of course way better. Sanji had trouble in the past against clearly other people and now if you read recent stuff about him, you should know what I mean.

You can be optimistic as you want, it will never happen. If yes it would be a huge shocker and I of course would be very glad... Even if I agree with your thought's about Sanji hate is going way to far for no reason.

I'm with KiShi, I have a couple Sanji campaigns and I'll post them and be here for as much of it as I can, but the reality here is that it's an uphill battle. Sanji just happens to be that unpopular here. Goes to show that anytime his name comes up there's a debate on how bad his character is now.

So far the second round has been going opposite of what I would want, but oh well, must carry on!
