Damn why does this have to be a 3DS exclusive, still crossing the fingers that this will come to the vita as well.

I've been waiting for this for a full decade.
Strange Journey sort of alleviated the pain, but nothing contends to the true power of a mainstay SMT game
What if it was better than Nocturne
Can you imagine
A world where a JRPG might finally contend to Nocturne's strength
@The:
A world where a JRPG might finally contend to Nocturne's strength
That would terrify me. I don't know if my body is ready.
I like to imagine the only reason Devil Survivor exists is to absorb all of the leftover Persona
That way, Shin megami tensei IV can be pure and without taint
And become the greatest ever
Heh. From behind the main guy/gal looks like Korra.

Hehe not to necessarily argue against that, but I really love the devil survivor games so I wouldn't really call persona influences a taint.
That said it's been a effing long time since the last shin megami tensei game I played(the last one being digital devil saga I think or maybe it was raidou kuzunoha) with an occult and grim feeling.
So yeah although I love the recent the direction the persona games went with I really hope that SMT can be it's own thing and cater to a different kind of taste story and tone wise.
That said I really hope that some of the gameplay mechanics are getting streamlined to make them less tedious.
I really don't want to negotiate with demons anymore at least not in the form that it's been done in the older games.
I think streamlined is a bad move with SMT's main games. I think the better word to use would be, like, to allow a greater sense of control. In the case of negotiating demons, I think it could allow a system where you're more aware of what the personalities and stuff mean and be less fickle and randomized. Strange Journey did a good job of showing some development on that front, but yeah. I think the Talk system has been long overdue for an overhaul.
But yeah like I was saying:
SMT3 excelled tremendously at its customization and it's one of the best JRPGs gameplay-wise due to it. Everything was in the hands of the player and that felt soooo good. I think the Press Turn system was wicked creative as a way to really put focus on the battle system's elemental encounters while also SPEEDING UP everything. Versus just making the attacks 'stronger'. I think the only thing it can go from here is by adding on to it with more attributes to the Nocturne battle system. Strange Journey's alignment elemental weakness system was lame, so I hope they exclusively operate off of what Nocturne had.
Worst case scenario, it's basically a complete retread of Nocturne's battle system, which was pretty fine as is, or it'll be a "new" system with its own twist (ala Persona 3/4 or Digital Devil, which is also ok but they weren't as good).
Ahhhhh I'm excited guys
And so the music sounds very Nocturn-ish rather than Strange Journey-ish from this trailer. My expectations are extremely high for this, and I am certain this game will not disappoint. So far Atlus has yet to disappointment me with their SMT titles (well…except for Jack Bros being on virtual boy).
So far SMTIV looks like it will be in 3d like Nocturn rather than Strange Journey's classical SMT style. Unfortunately they have yet to show anyone's face which worries me. I really hope Kazuma Kaneko did the designs for this, and the only way to tell is to see how the character's faces look like.
PS. Holy shit, you know what I just realized? They used SMT1/Nocturne's Law Theme at the beginning of the clip. That...is....awesome.
I couldn't be more excited for this game. I've played almost all of the original Shin Megami Tensei titles.
Looks like the main protagonist (heroine?) will be using a comp again. I def. prefer Hitoshura's method of leveling and gaining allies over the comp but I can dig it.
Yeah streamlining might not been the best word to use since it rather carries an association with dumping things down which I wouldn't like either.
I just want them to be mindful of systems that people will use hundreds of times during their play and try to keep tedium at bay.
Giving more controll is actually a really good point. Things like getting away from random encounters.
I'm also a fan of persona 4 the goldens customizable difficulty where you can adjust to a certain degree things like experience/gold gain, damage received, etc.
Sadly it only unlocks after 1 playthrough.
Also looking at the screenshot with one of the characters back being a close up I'm pretty sure that it's kaneko.
The way it's colored and how the hair is rather edged than curved are big giveaways.
I'm interested in what they're going to do with the contrast between urban Tokyo and the medieval city that's shown. And it'll certainly be interesting to finally have a vanilla Shin Megami Tensei game with voice acting.
Looks sick, though barring some significant change in artstyle that definitely looks like Soejima's artwork (or maybe even Doi, the Trauma Center guy) instead of Kaneko's. Kinda disappointed that the battles don't appear to be in full 3D like the PS2 games, but on the other hand it's good to still see 2D spritework still hanging in there.
One of those characters reminds me a bit of Katsushiro from Samurai 7.
I love the music so far, and I have to agree that the fact that they are still using the old Dragon Quest/SMT/Phantasy Star 2D battle style is a bit disappointing, but it's not a deal breaker. I'm not sure if I'm correct on this, but it looks like they are getting rid of random battles for a more Persona 3/4 style of getting into battles.
It looks incredible. I can live with the 1st person view in battle as long as the story is comparable (or dare I say better?) than Nocturne. I loved Nocturne, and the way that ATLUS has been comparing this game primarily to that game makes me incredibly excited.
The artstyle looks like the lineart is from kaneko and the colouring from someone else.
I'm really interested who did these designs now.
The guy from trauma team is confirmed to be the character designer I don't even know that guy but I probably should get me one of those trauma center games.
Looks like Kaneko and Meguro are not behind this work, or at least not managing it in public. Looks like the Trauma Center artist and Devil Survivor composer are behind it. I suppose this isn't a bad thing since the art and music are still pretty kickass. I can only wonder what Kaneko and Meguro are doing if they are still with Avex. Maybe they were assigned to P5 project? (I can see Meguro working on P5, but I don't know about Kankeo. If he were still working with Avex, I would have figured he would be managing the art in SMT IV. Wierd)
Trailer looks great, but it's weird the "exploration" graphics look so incredible yet the "fight graphics" look pretty lackluster.
Also, I'm playing SMT 3, and I want my Kaneko back. Best character designer ever.
With this, we can now safely say that this is going to be a very human/law oriented game! Sort of like the opposite of Nocturne. This is exactly what I wanted, but I didn't think the developers would actually go for it. I'm excited since a law-centric game is very fitting after SMT3.
The two factions seem like Law VS Law
And the Black Samurai is going to be awesome, guranteed. She's a QT-pie IMHO, dat demonica suit.
I'm assuming for now that the Black Samurai is going to turn out to be Lucifer in yet another guise. Ever since I first saw Tayama in that trailer I thought that he looked like Bono.
I don't know, Lucifer has already proved he's willing to put on a dress to disguise himself, so it's not a stretch
But specifically having a masked person with a female figure and curves makes me think it'll be someone else entirely, since if it's Lucifer it means he'd have to take off a mask and be a blonde woman and then STILL have to imply he's Lucifer so it'd be like a double twist? And that seems kind of awkward? Although just having her take off the helmet and be blonde would be enough to get the point across.
But Lucifer is usually pretty blatant in his disguises and openness that he's totally a fallen angel.
I wonder if that's one of those demonica the black samurai is wearing from strange journey and if so why.
The rest seem to rely on comps.
http://www.siliconera.com/2013/02/19/shin-megami-tensei-iv-hits-japan-in-may-limited-edition-3ds-xl-announced/ darn now I kind of want to have one…
All I want is for Atlus to announce this game is USA bound… Is that so gosh darn much to ask?
Well the game's not out until May, so I expect it to be brought over either by the end of the year or at the beginning of the next. I don't think it'll be that bad a wait with Soul Hackers next month and hopefully Break Record in the summer.
The 3DS is becoming a Shin Megami Tensei machine.
My…my wallet...
My…my wallet...
Nice hopefully it comes out in Europe in two years or so.
My…my wallet...
And here I thought I'd have nothing to buy this summer until around August when Killer is Dead comes out.
Maybe it would just be easier for all parties involved to just link Atlus to my bank account now?
Oh happy day! It's as if Atlus heard my/our cries!
Oh man a sequel to Nocturne… That's fantastic. Personally I think Persona is overrated, just good but not great. I freaking loved Nocturne though, that game was amazing. I thought they'd just make more Personas instead of continuing the core series because Persona is so popular. This is pretty awesome news.
Being Europe is suffering
Really cool…
comes with a nice box, cd, 176 strategy guide/design book of sorts...yep certainly worth my $50...
I preordered it when I knew of the first print edition thingie, I still havent beat Strange Journey….mem aleph can go swim in the magma and never come back..
In case it is of relevance, Preorders are open on amazon my fellow europeans.
Is anyone else as hyped for this game as I am?
I'm a huge Shin Megami Tensei fan, especially the numbered installments, and I can't wait to see what this game has in store.
Have anyone bought this game yet? Im waiting for the deliverly hopefullt Ill get it next week
I picked it up late this afternoon though I won't be able to actually play it until later this evening. There was a healthy stock of copies behind the counter at Gamestop which was nice to see.
Even if it only covers a little less than half the game the guidebook that came with it seems pretty substantial, though I don't know if I'll be referring to it much. Though, for being advertised as a guide-cum-art book it's rather anemic on the art side. I had hoped that they'd include full artwork of the new demon designs but I guess that won't come unless UDON releases a full artbook or something in the future.
I've put about 10 hours in now, and I have to say it's probably one of the hardest SMT games I've ever played, I know they are supposed to be hard, but I'm about level 12 now and the first level enemies will still chew me up and spit me out before I know what happened. It seems like the AI has a better understanding of the Press Turn system and are more than happy to exploit the living hell out of it, at least on the normal difficulty they do. This wouldn't be a problem if this happened everytime I fluff up a preemptive attack, it's my fault at that point, but when I get slaughtered because the camera is working against me, I don't call that fair. That not withstanding I'm loving the game. Certainly worth $50
I just got to Tokyo, and it looks like this is where the game really opens up. There's so much new to do and explore, it seems.
I'm having a lot of fun so far, with my only complaints being the UI for the Cathedral of Shadows and the camera sometimes getting in the way when exploring the dungeons. And it is indeed difficult. Negotiation seems to be stacked against the player much more than it's been in the past, since I don't recall having demons either taking my stuff and leaving or just attacking me as much in Strange Journey and Soul Hackers. The options just seem to be a random crapshoot, whereas in the past you could go by personality. Maybe there'll be an app later on that makes demons more agreeable.
I've been playing and really enjoying it. And I disagree Crossword, I've found it easier to find the right tricks to wooing demons this time. Yeah, there's still some randomness, but that's always been a thing. Also, I've been a Tokyo for a bit, and the reviews weren't kidding when they said it's hard to find objectives there. You basically have to explore and enter anywhere you can in the small hope that it might be where you need to go, or where you'll get some info on where you need to go. Can be kind of frustrating at times
I just bought this game today even though I don't have a 3ds yet. I'm hoping for a sale or a bundle soon.
30 hours in and I accidentally seem to have gotten the bad end thinking it might be neutral
–- Update From New Post Merge ---
Ok, redid the battle before the choice and it seems I'm stuck on the law route
Okay, I'm a little over twenty hours in now, on the return trip to Tokyo to visit the Shinjuku National Park. Money woes aside I'm having a lot of fun exploring the environments, finding stuff to do, and recruiting (I seem to finally be getting a hang of this game's negotiation quirks) and fusing demons when I can. Still, it doesn't let up at all. Give the enemy the slightest bit of initiative and you're dead. It took me by surprise that Kaga was only in the game for maybe like, twenty minutes since the promo material made her out to be Tayama's opposite.
While it's nice to play an RPG with a world map since they're so few these days, I really wish the Tokyo map was more intuitive. It's oftentimes difficult to discern where you can walk and where you can't, and it really needs a feature that just lets you pause the game and take a look around. Trying to just sit there and gather your bearings only seems to result in getting back-attacked by an aggressive enemy.
And just beat the law route
–- Update From New Post Merge ---
So, since I beat the game at around 27 hours of play (didn't do many challenge quests), I figured Id give some gameplay tips for those who are interested
! 1. By the end of the game, Makarakarn (which reflects all non almighty magic attacks) and Tetrakarn (reflects physical attacks) are your absolute best friends. Get two demons that each have one of the two (or give one or both to your main), and when you fight the bosses have both used every turn. It'll make you invulnerable to everything barring almighty attacks and status effects, rob the enemy of all their turns if they should hit, deal damage to the enemy (potentially a lot if they hit with an aoe or multi hit attack), and potentially cause smirking for you.
2. Magic is in my opinion the best stat. I found that most of the game I rarely used physical attacks or skills except to finish off a near dead demon or with a demon who was physically oriented
3. Save items like beads and chakra pots for bosses. They're very helpful against them
4. Recarm is another amazing skill, and you should get it on your main so that you can keep using your best demons and use the stock as elemental reserve, or fusion fodder
5. Keep mediarama on your main character as well as on demons. It'll give you more flexibility for healing
6. When scouting demons, it seems any given demon type can be cheated a set number of times that doesn't seem to change and refusing probably follows a similar suit. Don't be afraid to cheat demons or refuse them from time to time
7. Aside from having a few different sets of armor so that you're covered elementally, you shouldn't really need to buy much equipment unless you want to alter your appearance. I'd suggest saving macca for demon compendium usage and for when you die
I beat the game. Ended up going Neutral, which wasn't my original intention but it's apparently the toughest to get and the most substantial of the routes, so that was great. I managed to level Flynn all the way up to 99 by the final final boss, so I guess I was a little overleveled, but still. The final boss was quite fair and did a good job keeping me on my toes - nowhere near as bullshitty as Mem Aleph was in Strange Journey.
So if there's one word that I feel sums up this game it's "atmospheric." It's the kind of RPG that really isn't made all that much anymore. There's so much to explore, find, do, it can be a little overwhelming at times, and over sixty-five hours in I'm still finding new things to do. If heaven forbid this is the last Shin Megami Tensei game that Atlus makes, they've gone out with one hell of a bang. I'm going to try to finish up some more challenge quests and find a Fiend or two before moving on to a New Game plus.
man how did you get Neutral by accident? Like, can you give me tips as someone going blind and is trying to get it? I know that there's a binary at the end that gives you huge Chaos or Law points, so so far I've been focusing on Chaos route (so i can just get that if I mess up) but peppering in seemingly Law choices like every two or three or so. I've been thinking if I have more Chaos points than law, but pick law as my binary at the end, I might get neutral?
I hope it works? Also I feel like there's a lot to say about how good SMTIV is so far but there's just too much. Its mechanics have really evolved well. I especially like how the main character can be grown.

Sorry i mean to say that this game is really shitty and i am pretty sad that i cannot enjoy eating ramen with my pal mothman or go to school with my pal mothman where's persona 5 capcom?
I didn't do anything special, I just picked whichever dialogue option that felt "right" to me. But after a certain point in the game an NPC dubbed "cynical man" will appear in the bars to serve as an indicator of your currently alignment. If he says you're polite, you're Law, hot-blooded is Chaos, and "hard to read" is Neutral. I was Law for most of the game but close to the split there was a gauntlet of choices that I went Chaos on (since the Law choices came off as petty dickishness to me) that I guess evened out my karma.
@Holy:

An easy way to get neutral is to pick the first choice of any dialogue option when possible, go left at all the paths in tsukiji, go with Jonathan instead of walter, and then at the final part choose the chaos option. Also, don't do any side quests until you're done with all that, since those complicate things
I like to just play the game without having to think about directions to scenes I haven't even seen yet, so while I can keep that in mind I guess, I'm still gonna do all my sidequests as I've been doing and just kind of keep it in the back of my mind I suppose.
I mean why can't mothman and I go to the movies when is persona 5 coming out this is not a good game
Is this like a Persona spinoff or some shit?
