General Kickstarter Thread

We've got a few threads floating around for Kickstarter games but I feel it'd be better to have one thread for them so instead of 15 threads with no discussion we have one thread that gets bumped when something cool is found and with a bit of discussion. I'm going to start out with one that I recently found but will link the other threads and post some more in the morning.

Spin Tires, a Soviet offroad trucking simulator with dynamically deforming terrain. They've got a demo too and plans for a single player mode and multiplayer if they make enough money. Currently $3 thousand away from their main goal but they have $50 and $80 thousand stretch goals including vehicle interiors, multiplayer, and more content overall. There's a demo if you want to play it.

The two should probably be merged, though. GD isn't the ideal place for discussing this.

Well, I'm sold. I always regretted missing out on the Neverhood train. Claymation is one of the best things that ever happened to animation just try to convince me otherwise (you can't).

The Stomping Land ended and was funded and I also added Expeditions: Conquistador to the OP as it was just recently released.

Spintires ended. Shame it didn't make its second stretch goal. Armikrog has 11 days to go and has been at around $500 thousand for quite awhile. I wonder if it'll end up getting funded at this rate. There's usually a lot of people funding it towards the end though, so we'll see.

I just backed A Hat In Time. It just looks like an amazing love letter to the N64 days, and everything from the gameplay to the art to the environments to the music looks spectacular. It has 5 days left so I recommend you check it out.

Didn't realize it wasn't funded yet. Moved it to the correct place in the OP. I'm actually thinking of backing it now that I watch the video. It definitely looks cool, especially since I've been kind of obsessed with 3D platformers lately. Shame the early access costs so much.

I contemplated donating a significant amount, but the physical stuff would most likely end up sitting around for a while and then get damaged or tucked away. I just went for the 20-dollar tier that comes with the soundtrack and a postcard. Sounds like a reasonable compromise. Would've bumped to 25 if I knew someone else who wanted the game. But yeah the music has me excited too, especially since they've hit just about every stretch goal and will have a Grant Kirkhope song (Banjo-Kazooie composer, among many other Rare games).

Every little detail points to them really knowing their stuff and caring about those old-school games like they claim. For example, on the

Yeah I kind of want a bunch of extra stuff like the buttons but I know they'll just sit around and I won't do anything with them. I'll probably go the $20 tier too for the soundtrack. And it also comes with a (digital) booklet with I guess the controls and stuff explained like the ones that used to come with games.

So, A Hat In Time reached its final stretch goal, but they added a new one where every extra $15k goes to a new Grant Kirkhope tune + some new NPCs/enemies/abilities. I seriously hope it has an amazing last 3 days because damn I want more of that genius's music!

I'd be more than happy to put money down for Hat in Time if they would just confirm if it was coming to Wii U or not. They want it, yet I never saw any sort of stretch goal for it. (and I kinda find it hard to imagine how other devs are saying that Nintendo are approaching them that they wouldn't have done the same for this.)

They have addressed this multiple times in posts, replies to comment, and even in their FAQ section. They can't buy a Wii U release with money. It's a matter of them getting a proper publisher for Nintendo (whether it be Nintendo directly or not). They are doing everything they can already in this respect. I mean hey, I think this game belongs on consoles too, but I'm not going to be stingy with 20 bucks just because I have to play it on a PC, seeing as how I find it extremely important to support this type of game.

Nintendo allow self publishing apparently on the Wii U/3DS which is how just about every other developer who raised the extra funds for a dev kit to put it on. So dunno why they would be an exception and need a publisher.

-The Unreal engine license is the huge cost, not just the Wii U dev kit.

By the way Sakonosolo, I would suggest changing your "Unfunded" category to "In Progress" and also adding one for "Failed to fund" or something, for completion's sake (so that projects don't mysteriously vanish from the topic).

Yeah, Foolio, was thinking of doing something like that with the categories. There's no need for a failed category yet, though. Armikrog doesn't look like it'll be funded so I'll add one when it fails :sideways: .

@Cyber-Robin: Apparently a license for UE3 that allows for console publishing, or more specifically WiiU publishing, is around $500,000, a lot more than the overall cost of the game through Kickstarter. That's why they need a publisher, there's no way they're going to make $500,000 on top of what is already pledged. Console development is expensive.

I hope it happens! Also, they said they might try to release it on other platforms besides Steam as well such as GOG.

As for A Hat In Time, I'm incredibly pleasantly surprised at the funding explosion in the last 12 hours or so. The 3rd Kirkhope song is as good as guaranteed and now it's just a matter of seeing if we can get another 1 or 2! Couldn't be happier.

Yeah, I jumped on the Hat in Time bandwagon. I'm hoping they get Kirkhope to do the hubworld theme in classic BK way the hub theme is done in the style of the world theme as you approach the entrance. My nostalgia gland would erupt in awkward pus if that happened.

I'm really hoping Armikrog pulls through, as a fan of adventure games and claymation. It's too close and the dudes behind it are so excited for it that it would be a real shame to see it barely miss.

To be honest announcing Wii U stuff actually does work sometimes. There's been a few instances when they've said 'oh and if we get x we'll put it on Wii U too) and quickly gotten the rest of the money.

I think Armikrog's problem is there is so little time left, so people wanting Wii U might not bother since it looks hopeless.

Not like you lose anything from pledging to a failure though, so I don't see why you would let that stop you. And 53k in about a day… it's possible!

Its possible. I still undecided myself. If I hadn't just backed Hat in Time I would have. But I felt Hat spoke to me more (never played Earthworm Jim when I was a kid yet grew up on Mario, Banjo and WW is still one of my fave titles graphically.)

Although I HATE how this one is worded. At one point it does say Wii U. But only if it hits the stretch goal. Yet you can pledge solely for the Wii U version. Or you can add extra for the Wii U version. What happens if it hits it's goal yet doesn't hit the goal for the Wii U version? Would they still have to refund since technically people would have been backing specifically for the Wii U version

It's a precious non-violent RPG with some neat non-menu play mechanics and general cuteness

But it's already funded and working on stretch goals so this is more just awareness that it exists post.

Actually it looks like it already hit all the stretch goals too. I hadn't heard of it but it doesn't stand out to me at all. I'm all for retro but I don't want to play something that literally looks like it runs on an Atari 2600. It also is really badly explained on the Kickstarter page, including but not limited to no real display of passion (other than possibly for animating sprites). It seems like this weird mish-mash of genres, and I don't get how you can don an RPG cap and then say "but you can avoid every single battle ever!"

Well Armikrog got 13k in the last 3 hours with 19 to go. So, it's well on track to get funded as it has less than 40k left. But I doubt it'll hit a stretch goal.

950,000 was the wii u goal I think, now that they have more than 900,000 (the main goal) they can open paypall donations for the wiiu later.

The project closed at $974,578 so no need for extra donations. Meanwhile, A Hat In Time is healthily on its way to a 4th extra Grant Kirkhope song which would make 5 in total.

i'm glad armikrog reached it's wii u goal, and i gave in and pledged $22 for a hat in time even though i plan on picking it up on the wii u. Could always give the steam one to a friend or my brother

It it makes it onto Wii U, you might be able to get your digital copy switched to that version.

Looks like Soul Saga's Wii U stretch goal also now includes PS4 and Vita. Which is pretty nifty since I always feel JRPGs should be on JRPG consoles

Some stretch goals on games get way out of hand haha. But then again, people aren't donating that much money JUST so they can get some rewards.

A Hat In Time is in its final 3-ish hours, with 6k to go for the next Grant Kirkhope song, which would be the 7th in total. Let's do it!

Yeah I heard about that. The bigger the game the better so I hope the early access thing is successful. Personally I think the concept of getting early access to PART of the game is abominable and I would never participate.

Added H-Hour: World's Elite, a spiritual successor to Socom. The creative director for the first two Socom games is doing the same job for this game as well. It's going to be on PS4 and PC.

That looks too good to be true.
Like seriously? I look at the dev list, its pedigree and size and they only want a 100k?
That seems super unreal. If they really can do it for that little and the game turns out to be as good as the talent working on it, then that has to be one hell of a passion project for everyone.

All I can say about the game itself, the artstyle looks pleasant.

Still waiting for a kickstarter to make the ultimate spritebased jrpg with all of todays knowledge of design, storytelling and technology.
