15 Years of One Piece

saw it on 4kids and actually liked it. found out about the manga shortly thereafter and started reading it. eventually caught up. took a break from one piece and most anime in general when I was like 12, stopped at thriller bark. bored me to death. Returned at like 14 or 13 which was around the time I joined this forum. I don't think I ever fully read the TB arc to this day. Skypiea kind of bored me as well but I managed to sit through all of it. So yeah that is my history or whatever with One Piece.
-
Started reading in 2003 when Shonen Jump first came out! I found One Piece very intriguing, so at the time I watched some poor quality fansubs and was immediately addicted!
I then purchased some Chinese bootleg DVDs of the films, and 4th one as soon as it came out. It was just amazing!!
Started reading the newest chapters at the Water 7 arc, ever since things have only became more and more epic!Hard to believe Pokemon only hit the States after One Piece started in Japan!!
-
It is still my favorite story of any medium to date, it is just the ultimate culmination of many elements, in my opinion. That is unlikely to change anytime soon (and probably never will), but I am on a journey to try to find stories that compete with it. I heard from people that Hunter X Hunter does, and in my opinion it does not. Now Hunter X Hunter has some arcs that are better than One Piece's, but the overall product is just not as high-quality to me, and leaves me feeling a bit empty. I love Hunter X Hunter, don't get me wrong, I just don't think it's quiiite on the same level of One Piece, but you'll see my thoughts on that when I post my tier list in the Tiers of Manga thread (but I won't do that until I reach 100 mangas read).
As for the future, I can only see the series getting better and better as it has been, there are still so many elements yet to be fully involved in the main story.
Kanpai! holds up some grog May One Piece have a happy decade+ of story left.
-
Well said bro.I completely agree with you.
Kanpai!! -
Heh, havent been a One Piece fan for that long (only about 4.5 years as we speak), but it is and will always be my greatest passion. My brother started to read the books a few months before me, and since they were really cheap at the time (50 swedish kronors, about 7 usd i belive) he was able to buy book 1-44, and then i started to read it on a boring night when i had nothing to do. After i had read the first book, i stayed up all night trying to read them all(still took me some weeks though). Nowadays, i both buy the books and read it online. Anyways, it's thanks to my brother that i became a One piece fan, and i am forever gratefull to him. When i first started to read it, noone knew about it in my social cirkle, but we introduced it to our 9 year old cousin about 2 years ago(he was 9 2 years ago) and he also fell for it pretty quickly, and he has introduced it to a few of his friends. I have also tried to spread it, but i havent had much sucess. My best friend read book 1-3 and he loved it, but then he complained and said i was always nagging him to return my books (wich perhaps i was, since hes a slow reader) But atleast he knows about it, and we watched Strong world together, and we will watch movie Z together too. In a few weeks i will start high school, and hopefully meet some op fans there too.
Heh, now it feels like ive gone off-topic…
But to summarise: One piece is probably the greatest thing that has ever happened to me, and even though i can see its flaws, i still think its the worlds greatest manga, and i hope that it will continue for a long time and have a great ending.
(raises glass) TO ONE PIECE!!!

I got into anime when I was 11ish (year 7). Whilst I sadly don't really speak to the wonderful guy who got me into it, he got me into Naruto and a website called Gaia Online which I still go on nowadays X'D then through my own curiosity and seeing AMVs I found Bleach. At the very first none uniform day in year 8, I saw someone wearing an Akatsuki cloak. Now, if I'd never been into anime or anything, I'd be like 'lolweird', but because I was I recognised it and yeah. Still in contact with the guy (even if he does keep flirting with me) but he eventually got me to watch One Piece because he was still watching it and he was still in Arabasta (I think). He was also the same ass who convinced me that Skypiea and the Davy Back Fights were FILLER. [/pap] oh well. Enjoyed Skipiea anyhow. I overtook him within three days, cried my eyes out at the Going Merry thing, and then hit a dead end within Thriller Bark (at the time, the anime was only in Thriller Bark and hadn't reached further outward), so I started to read the manga and am so damn glad I read it ;D
So damn glad I got into One Piece. Whilst my likings for Naruto and Bleach have all but died like the mangas themselves
should have done a long time ago, I still love One Piece so damn much.
the best thing is the guy who got me into anime in the first place attends the same college as me and though he isn't in the same class he's still in Hardware (which surprised me) so I still see him and say 'hi' from time to time -
I found One Piece about 2 years ago playing Jump Ultimate Stars.
Watched Episode 1.
Didn`t like it.
Quit.
Starting watching it again in March 2012.
Liked it.
Got to the current episodes.
Read the manga. -
I decided to watch on a whim one day and thought that I liked it.
…
...so yeah! Go One Piece! -
I saw the series on 4Kids….and didn't like it. I thought the art style was awesome though. Then Cartoon Network started showing the 4Kids dub on Toonami. One day I was way too exhausted to get out of bed and let the TV play. That night Toonami was showing the 4Kids dub episode of Chopper's backstory of when Chopper and Hiriluk first met. I thought it looked kind of interesting but something was definitely off. So I decided to check the internet and found out the 4Kids dub is intensely edited and started watching the Japanese version. >w<
-
I've been into One Piece since 2004 so I'm a proud OP fan of 8 years
-
was always a fan of dragon ball Z. In year 9 (14) My friend got me into naruto on jetix and i watched them. Thought anime was cool. Saw an advert for bleach and one piece. Remembered the 4kids one piece and choose to watch bleach instead. Managed to get my hands on Jump ultimate stars in year 11 (16) made me love black cat and i noticed there was a ton of one piece characters. Found sogeking and sanji interesting. Decided to follow the hype and watched the first few episodes. Found it ok. Watched arlong park. Loved it and so continued.
I can't think when one piece will end but in my mind i see it being around 100 volumes in length and that's just fine for me
-
I joined the fun in 2003, when they first aired the anime in Germany.
Started reading the manga shortly after Christmas 2004. :3 -
Well well well.
Some years before (either 2006 or 2007 i cant remember- 13y.old approx) i was talking to a friend of mine in MSN.We started talking about pokemon which in Greece was so popular , then he asked me if i remember a "cartoon" named Drake(Yeah sit down , Drake was the name of Luffy in the Greek Dub - oh god) and yeah i remembered of Drake as i had watched some episodes.
He then sent me a link to watch episode 1 (it was also summer) and i watched as far as i remember from episode one to episode 16-20.I had a small problem because i was kinda young to be able to speak english properly (foreign language) but i could understand most of things.
I then stopped watching one piece when i got in Skypia , and came back 1 year after (2008) to start watching again.I got up to date with the anime and waited from then each week for the newest episode. On the start of Sabaondy arc i learned about the manga. And yeah i got into impell down in manga and then i started watching/reading both. One Piece is the best thing that happened to me in order to fill my time.Actually i can recall days sitting inside instead of going out to watch One Piece.I thank you Oda-sensei for that
Now , on 2011 i was so annoyed by that situation of having to wait 1 week for manga and anime and i wanted to fill my emptiness (because i generally love anime and manga general) and started watching Fairy Tail since i got a reccomendation from a friend.I really liked it and it was kinda relaxing and funny so i decided to stick with fairy tail.In some point i completed it and read the manga as well.So i was in the same "emptiness" again and decided to start both Naruto Shippuden and Bleach.(I had seen most of Naruto episodes when i was younger - arround the TB times from OnePiece and the rest of the story i learned it from a friend so i got into shippuden.)Naruto was ok and i watched until the danzou/sasuke fight and then dropped the anime and now i am reading the manga.Bleach is the anime that i love hate and love.I always wanted to try "Bleach" since i got into One Piece (and saw watchbleach etc).I watched it untill the bount arc.Watched nothing from there on and i will not , i love bleach of Soul Society etc so i want to have only good memories.
And now i am watching reading a bounch of animes and reading a ton of manga but nothing comes even close to the feeling of "SHIT NEW OP CHAPTER" or "OMGWTFWTFWT new episode".
One Piece is really something magic to me.
-
Began watching 4kids dub around 2005. I liked it, recognized it as anime do to the animation and found fansubs. I finished all of the episodes and read the manga, right around Enies Lobby was happening in the manga. Been reading ever since.
-
I liked One Piece from the first moment I laid eyes on the manga when Shonen Jump america started releasing back when I was in high school, but when it really made an impact on my life was after my Daddy passed away. It gave me something to smile about during the worst time in my life
-
When I first saw Luffy, I thought he looked crazy and scary and I evenutally liked the character a lot. Years later, bishonen Luffy is creepy xd.
One Piece is definetely one of the most exciting series since the original trilogy of star wars.
-
Lol how does a Japanese comic book and anime series set in a pirate fantasy world compare to a sci-fi space epic movie trilogy?
-
Lol how does a Japanese comic book and anime series set in a pirate fantasy world compare to a sci-fi space epic movie trilogy?
Yeah it is really hard to compare movies to comics or books, I see what you mean. Apples and oranges and all.
But I'll be damned if I don't try once I have lots of entertainment under my belt. Workin' at it. -
I discovered the series watching the tv. I was like 8 and just the opening made me fall in love with the series. They broadcasted 2 chapters per week and stopped right after Ace's introduction. A few years later I discovered you could watch series on the internet(O_o) watched all the epsiodes avaliable (till the supernova introduction chapter) went on with the manga and then I read it form the beggining during the one month break.

It might go for another 10 years meaning we might even get a 25 of one piece topic if this forum is still around

Nah,I think we will be here bitching about how One Piece should have ended
Nahhhh. I will spew venom at anyone who does that. And we only bitch on this forum sometimes (and it's more of constructive criticism anyway… no one's really bitched about PH at all, even the elitist peeps & the SUPER elitist peeps) because we know Oda lurks(!!!). So we're just try'na give him a little nudge.
-
Pft if One Piece continues another 10-15 years then I'll be… like... 27/32
MIND CRUSH. -
Started watching anime back in 2007. It stopped just before the Arlong arc. Imagine, i was watching the 4kids version, yet i liked it! (Ofcourse original is better).
Back then i was naive little boy. Didnt know that there were live streamings on the internet. Then started watching again in 2010, precisely when i started haunting Arlong Park.
-
Started reading in 2003 when Shonen Jump first came out! I found One Piece very intriguing
This. Been reaidng almost ten years.
-
I started 2006 .
-
We moved around a lot, thanks to my dad's job. In early 2000 (I was 9) my dad was sent to Japan and my mom and I decided to go with him. At that point volume 12 had just been released in Japan. I loved pirates, so to help me learn Japanese my dad bought me all 12 volumes. He read me a chapter or two every night before bed helping me with my Japanese. Both my father and I became huge fans of the series (he too still reads i to this day.)
We lived in Japan for a year and a half before moving to Texas where we finally settled down. The last volume released before we left was volume 19.
Coming back to America sucked, as One-Piece hadn't even started being released yet. So for two years I just re read the same two volumes. Finally 2003 hit and Shonen Jump started, but the pace was agonizingly slow. For me at least. So I did some internet snooping and discovered scanlations. I got caught up with everything I missed and then I started reading One-Piece weekly at chapter 273: Quintet. I haven't looked back since.
I still have my Japanese volumes, though I've long since lost any fluency I had in the language.
For me it's been 12 glorious years of having One-Piece in my life.
It's crazy to think that if One-Piece runs for another 10 years I'll be 31. It's also frightening.
How do you part ways with something that's been a part of your life for 22 years? -
I've only been reading since 2009, so I've started very recently. Earlier I've seen some episodes on RTL 2, but back then I didn't know German good enough to understand what is actually going on (I liked the world, but I didn't enjoy the style of art). during second semester on second year on university I just had lot of free time on my hands, decided to try reading One Piece in the Internet, as I've learned there are sites for reading manga on line. Some girls on manga meetings, I'm attending, were so much in the series back then and always discussing it. One I've started reading I've immediately sunk in, I've fallen in love, I couldn't stop reading till I was finished with all the chapters that were released to that date, and then I couldn't wait for more. Once they've stated publishing One Piece in my country I've start buying it too.
I feel, One Piece is something that was created for me. -
Started watching the 4kids dub…..and back then, I did like it. But as I got older and the dub ended.....what was I supposed to do? Then I ended up finding scans of the manga online.....and thinking how awesome the current story arc looked (and wondering about all the characters I didn't know).
So eventually I went back and read the story from the start, and I haven't looked back.
-
Saw the first issue of Shonen Jump in my local supermarket with like Goku or somebody on the cover. Been reading One Piece ever since.
The best is when I get people I know to read it when they don't even read manga. I've converted around ten people. I love talking about One Piece in person.
-
I first watched the 4kids One piece back in 2005, I was only 10/11. When I watched Arlong Park, I thought the villain wasn't evil enough because he didn't kill Bellemere, but I still enjoyed the fight between Luffy and Arlong. Don't get me started with the pirate rap, I have absolutely no idea what they are singing about, even till this day.
At 2008, I watched a person from Youtube that was talking about One Piece a lot, saying that it's the best manga ever and stuff like that and I thought to myself 'Hmmm One Piece, isn't it that shitty show that used to appear on T.V.'.
And then I finally see in some website that One Piece has been edited and cut for the western audience, that there was actually blood and Bellemere actually died. So I started watching the anime in the internet, not long after I started reading the manga too.
So that's how I became a fan of the show.My first reaction of seeing Usopp is "Whoa! Look at this dude's face, he's got clown lips! And the overalls he's wearing is hideous". Now Usopp is my favourite character of all time.
-
This. Been reaidng almost ten years.
I started watching the anime April 22nd, 2003. Began reading after September 24, 2006 after seeing episode 278.
-
Started reading while Enies Lobby was almost near its end, so I guess mid-late 2007. I don't even remember anymore.
Unlike the norm, I found about it through a game I got in my birthday (One Piece: Grand Battle).
-
Started reading while Enies Lobby was almost near its end, so I guess mid-late 2007. I don't even remember anymore.
That would be 2006, around the same time as me, actualy.
-
I've fully experienced One Piece last autumn. Before that,I had watched some fansubs up to Little Garden.
Now,I wish I could undo all that, just so I could experience it all anew.
-
I must have seen the anime for the first time on German tv when i still had all German channels in 2008 or so coudn't come into it at the time thought it was kinda weird.
But when i got more into anime a few years later i kept hearing about this thing called One Piece and when a friend sad i should give it a try, i finally did it in 2010 and i slowly started really liking it.I must say for some reason Marineford was the turning point for me where i really became addicted and started to observe the One Piece universe more before that i was kinda just going by the flow then on the end of Marineford i was got up with the Anime and then i finally tried the manga and realized i should have done that much earlier than Chopper also became all of a suddden my favourite anime charachter and so on.
Still most before chapter 500 or so i haven't even read but i will evantually come to it.So i guess that would make my favourie One Piece moment Whitebeard VS Akainu and the whole war in general.
-
@No:
That would be 2006, around the same time as me, actualy.
Yeah, I now remember that Thriller Bark happened (mostly) during 2007, not 2008.
2008 was the end of Thriller Bark, Sabaody Archipelago, Amazon Lily and the start of Impel Down.
2009 was the second half of Impel Down and the first part of the Marineford War.
2010 was the end of the Marineford War and the timeskip.
2011 was all Fishman Island.
