It's hard to argue that the pacing is really slow in comparison to the first few hundred episodes of One Piece. Earlier episodes covered two to three chapters of the manga, while fishmen island has covered one chapter every episode.
Toei slowed down the pacing to one chapter an episode in order to stop from having filler episodes. Which do you prefer? Slow pacing or a month or two of filler each year to keep the pacing at a decent speed?
There's almost no discussion to be had…
Toei just does both anyway.
Filler arcs are better.
Best case scenario (like in Bleach) you actually get a decent new story comprable, or sometimes better, than the actual manga.
Worst case? You can just skip them entirely.
When its all intermixed is when it goes to hell.
One Piece is popular enough to go on breaks between seasons or do hiatuses when anime gets to close to the manga material.

I really would prefer if Toei would go the Sunrise way, but I understand how impossible it is. And none of the current solutions suits me - so I don't watch anime.

At first I was all ready to come in here and be all "filler arcs? When there's such oppurtunity to expand on the source material? Hogwash, I say!" But then I said, "Kylor, my good man, when has that ever been a good thing?"
So yeah, filler. Slow Pacing, though, if Toei weren't terrible.

I'd prefer filler arcs over the dreadful pacing right now, but I'd much rather them just take breaks when they get too close, though we all know that's not going to happen. (so I agree with poster 4)

I have a feeling Toei was burned badly with the "Little East Blue" filler arc because it was placed poorly in the middle of the Impel Down arc and it was very poorly received here.
Does anyone have info on the ratings/general Japanese feedback of that mini-filler arc?
I don't care personally because even the worst stand-alone filler is entirely skippable, but I can imagine that arc fueling a fair amount of hate mail, especially since it was hyped up as a tie-in for the feature film.
Even if they didn't want to use the cover arcs since they don't get as many ratings. They could always notice the fact that Chopperman has his own spinoff manga now. I'm sure it's nothing great but surely it's better than dragging things out.
Has anyone made faster-paced versions of the more recent episodes? Like, two of the slow episodes strung together to make one fast episode? So that I can actually watch the series without tearing my hair out of scalp? T'would be nice.
There was the one guy who was able to trim the fat of the whitebeard war… to about half of it's original episodes.
He deserves kudos... but I'd never expect him to do more arcs.... i'm sure that's brain melting work right there.
Filler Arcs are better gives something to make fuin of in Bleach and naruto when we can't make fun of the main story.

I'm gonna assume it's a combination of B and C. Plus, there'd be more of a creative team involved in a Filler Arc, so they may be a bit expensive to produce. But when you have one of the most popular shows in Japan, a little extra cash spent on filler is really nothing. I'd guess that hey'd make that back almost immediately.

First 7-9 minutes are just wasted on title song + Speech on SH and New World + recap. Its inevitable though. Going per chapter an episode is quite difficult.
Sensible fillers would be my choice.
The best choice would be a balance. Pad out the scenes that could have padding, such as the Luffy/Ace/Sabo stuff that strengthens their bond.
We need more of that filler, and padding scenes that were implied, rather than padding dialogues which amounts to rehashing conversations said in previous episodes.

Filler Arcs most definitely. We all saw the effects of padding out scenes during the Marineford Arc, and that was enough proof that padding out stuff (with the exception of certain emotional scenes) is not an alternative to filler. I would even take crappy filler such as the Rainbow Mist arc, or the Warship Island arc over padding out scenes.
One question though, has the Anime ever been closer to the manga than it is now? I could have swore during the Enies Lobby / Post Enies Lobby arcs they were less than a year behind, and still did 1.5 chapter paced the episodes.
Also, if Toei ruins Punk Hazard with padding, I will most likely switch to Manga only, which is something I really don't want to do.
I've already switched to Manga-only naturally. I just slowly grew less interested in watching the anime and started missing episodes and having to play catch up until I just… started forgetting... my best friend will only watch the anime, so we get together to watch some from time to time, but I've stopped keeping up.
Marineford is what killed it for me.
They REALLY need to start doing filler arcs again. Just one or two decent sized filler arcs and they can go back to 1.5-2 ch per episode pacing and it should be fine. Enies Lobby was fine.
Wait, Toei's gonna be at Anime Expo this year right?

I don't understand why they don't just do an episode per chapter, and take breaks when Oda does..They're like 40 chapters behind right now, by the time this arc finishes in the anime (with the pacing they're taking now), it's going to be late November to mid December to finish it..

At the end of fishman Island they should start doing From the Decks of the World for a filler arc.

Seriously though, Ice Hunter, Apis, and Little East Blue were some of the worst arcs to go into the anime, filler or not.
The art style was pretty bad that arc, but it was still funny. This moment reminds of "Thats 70's show"

They are doing an episode a chapter. It's part of the problem, because some chapters are faster-paced than others, which is why Punk Hazard's gonna be an issue because it's so fast paced.

Don't forget actually decent filler characters and the filler "antagonist" guy,who is not really villain,but rather likable guy doing his job.
The thing about the worst filler arcs is that there's always some little kid around to annoy everyone. Warship Island had Apis, Rainbow Mist had like 3 little kids, and Little East Blue… sighs Yeah.
I know Toei adds them to appeal to the children watching, but they're still damn annoying.
I do find it funny how Vice-Admiral Jonathan was Sakazuki's protege. I know G8 was made long before they established his character, but still it's pretty funny.
Rainbow Mist wasn't that terrible. I was able to enjoy it for the most part.

For some reason, I can't see Toei doing a One Piece Kai. The first 250 episodes were paced fine, while Dragon Ball Z was slow from the start. Toei is also pretty cheap, so while they may have been up to doing a 270 episode series and shrinking it down to around 90, doing the same with One Piece would amount to around 450-500 episodes, seeing as how we're halfway through the series now, and assuming they 2 chapter pace everything. Also, I wonder if they would take certain arcs out, as they did with the Buu Saga, because I sure would not want that.
Filler arcs are better to me. Thriller Bark was where my interest in the anime stared to wane and by the time we gto thorugh Impel Down was gone completly. The inabilty to skip filler when it bores me, made a 100% anime dude go 100% manga here.

about 33 episodes of straight filler in the filler arcs/episodes. This isn't counting things like adding
to the DBF, or filler in non filler arcs.
If they did not start the anime so early and just let the manga get at least half way done before starting the anime they would not need any filler arcs as long as they're not putting more than one episode a week!
It would still be acceptable for the anime to do christmas/holiday or movie specials/cross overs for one time fillers they could also put for example a one piece movie instead of the episode for a week doing this lets the manga get ahead and makes sure the anime does not catch up when the manga author takes breaks!

Take out the DBF filler, and the filler arcs, and the alabasta filler and you still have around 200 well paced episodes. If we count up to about halfway through Enies Lobby, the episodes have at the least 1.5 chapter pacing mostly, and up to Enies Lobby is around 250 episodes.
Still, the only benefit I see in those 250 or so episodes getting the Kai treatment is that the animation would be improved upon, which I guess justifies that stretch of episodes getting the treatment.
the one piece filler arc quality can be high (see Navarone arc), then why not? I really prefer a 10 episode filler arc to a drastically slow cannon pacing…
I would enjoy a filler having a good plot and humour. I do not mind a 10 episode filler arc, but i do mind if that filler arc has a lame plot.

Well to start, for me at least.. I first watched that arc it was when I only watched the anime so I didn't even know it was filler at the time. The characters all seemed normal and were extremely funny, and it was well paced and didn't drag on too much at all either..
After reading the entire series and finding out it was just filler I was pretty shocked because I also found out the other filler arcs which I didn't care for at all were well..filler, and G8 to this day still stands as one of my all time favourite arcs, be it filler or not.

Well, I do agree, it's going pretty slow..It's making me want to take a break and just watch it all when it's finished..But that's too hard to do..
They're adding in filler to the episodes to make them longer, and by doing that they're not even getting in the full chapter sometimes.
The second half of Thriller Bark and SA were the last good arcs the anime did.
I just stopped watching it completely after how the anime ruined ID for me. The feeling just was not the same.
Also, I quite liked the Ice Hunter Filler. It beats the hell out most of those Edo fillers any day of the week.
lol I think I gave up around DBF for the anime. Maybe early W7 even. I recall seeing the episodes where Foxy was talking about Chopper and he was getting creeped out.
Although I did watch some later stuff. Chopperman filler and some parts of Thriller Bark, Amazon Lilly and Impel Down.
I think I'm one of the only ones who enjoyed that filler we got just after Arabasta. Well. Like three episodes (Robin and Chopper go get some water, Usopp and the Fireworks and Zoro with Johnny and Yosaku. Don't remember Nami, Sanji and Luffys at all tho. Was one where the crew bought a load of rubbish from a salesman?) And then it all turned into a Goat Man on a mountain and I gave up. (I think there was one about an old guy and a rainbow or some crap too)

That scene looks to be later. Robin wasn't wearing her purple stuff till Mock Town, definitely not Nami's clothes in that shot.
I'm rewatching the anime. I seriously forgot about the Rainbow Mist stuff. God that was aggravating to watch through…But I can't say it came out of now where cause they actually built up to it. The various hints with Robin reading the book about it and all. Then we get that sweet scene with the ship falling out of the sky to lead into the Jaya arc.
Navarone arc was the one i think the animators did a good job. Liked the story and humour. Good example of a perfect arc IMO. If they start making fillers like the above i dont mind them. Its better than slow paced main plot episodes anyday.
