So yeah, this is the electronic music thread. Feel free to talk about anything related to that style of music here.

I made the poll as a discussion starter. What genres of electronic music do you listen to, and why? I guess I'll start:

I mostly listen to Drum and Bass, because I tend to like music that is fast and heavy. I also like genres that are upbeat, like House and Hi-NRG. I enjoy Industrial because of its cross-genre fusions (industrial rock and metal, specifically), and Trance for it's blend with orchestral music. Other genres are mostly on a case by case basis.

Edit: Also, I just used Wikipedia's list of genres for the poll, and did some combining and such because there were more than fifteen. So if there is a genre you feel is too broad or not there at all, I apologize.

I have a bizarre experience with Electronic music. On one hand I don't know shit about shit.
On the other hand I've heard a TON, and in a very organic way
basiclaly I caught on to hearing two different awesome NYU radio shows in high school, Bentwave and Beatsinspace and they played a ton

why no Minimal Techno option :(

I loves me some deadmau5, Daft Punk, Justice, Madeon, Hypster, Mord Fustang, Feed Me, Bluesteady Triptik. I loves me some video game soundtracks made entirely of electronic music (JSRF and F-ZERO GX come to mind). Does Shpongle count as electronic? It's probably more instrumental but I love that too. Nujabes probably counts as instrumental too. Same with DJ OKAWARI. DJ Mitsu the Beats does some great shit too. I love this dj called Maynard Plant who produced two albums as .blanc. It's more popish in that he sings in most songs but it's very atmospheric and sounds pretty electronic imo.

Electronica is one think I really don't know shit about, haha. My experiences trace around more of the source work and the odd modern band. It's not a genre that grips me as much. Well, that's a weird thing to say, because it is not that cohesive of a genre. It's the genre people created for lack of a good place to put a bunch of groups. As a result there are a lot of clusters of incredibly similar styles that sort of grew off of each other occasionally in the same airspace. Ignoring some cheesy graphics, this site helps put things into perspective a bit, but I still have a difficult time navigating electronica's labyrinthine halls.

I do have a fondness for a bit of the industrial electronic stuff, though.

By none of you I'm sure you're referring to Sakon and Zephos because while my posts lists weren't exactly as electronica as what you posted I do know a decent amount of electronic music.

One of the best things that ever happened to me in a car was when I was driving away from a hard day of work, and had forgotten my i-pod at home, and had to resort to the damn radio. And in the low end of the dial I stumbled upon a DUB REGGAE SHOW.

I listen to most of 'em but to diffrent degrees. Disco is a guilty plesure of mine and I've listened to an absurd amount of it... Especially Italo Disco. >_>
Electro and techno are such including lables I'll have to check those to. :V
I love to listen to the industrial from time to time to. Ugh. I'll have to think more. I hate that. Thinking. Bah I say.

Bumping my year and a half old thread.

I've been listening to a lot of Krewella lately. Their recent album in particular has been doing a great job of giving me my EDM fix. Mostly due to it's diversity in genre. It has some drum n' bass, some dubstep, a couple styles of house, and even a few other things.

Yeah… They really aren't... ;D Mouse On Mars is well pretty much straight up techno. Maybe on the experimental side.
Alva Noto is glitch. Glitch being this weird microtonal music it's almost noise I would say actually. Koto on the other hand is classical Italo Disco! :)

Hahah oh damn I don't even know half of these genres, I'm pretty sure I know at the very least one artist from every big subcategories. But i just can't label them for the love of me. I just know them, we are good acquaintances but I constantly keep forgetting their names. Some of these genres just sound so intriguing though.. Give me some of that Liquid Funk now!

Listened to some Alva Noto and it's not bad at all! Listening to Neue Stadt right now and I think I will investigate further.
But that music video to Jabdah spoke to me on a deep personal level hahaha

House has always been my main electronic genre of choice. About a year ago, I got turned out to Todd Edwards, through my favourite Daft Punk song, Face to Face. He just turns out some really great stuff. The way he's able to work dozens of half second samples into any given song is masterful. I guess that explains why he's considered the founder of UK garage (although a bit odd, seeing as how he's from New Jersey). I feel this is his best track I've heard so far. Of course, who knows if that might change, since there seems to be a crazy amount of his stuff hidden around Youtube and Soundcloud.

^ This was the first song I'd ever heard from him, and it's also fan-fuckin'-tastic.

Been trying to find some electronic stuff I like and figured I'd try reviving this thread. I've listened to some house, techno, trance, etc and I still can't figure out the difference between them. They all sound similar to me, though I'm not really listening to all three right after another. Could someone explain what exactly makes them different?

So far I've liked some UK Garage and 2-step as well as a few trance songs I've listened to so would like some recommendations from people on here on those.

I believe the main differences between the genres of electronic music are their bpm range and what types of drum sounds actually fall on the different beats (kick, snare, hat, etc). I've found that with time you start to subconsciously correlate those things with the genre of music, even if you don't really understand them from a technical standpoint. So for me, I can't really say what makes a certain genre what it is, but when I hear it, I can usually identify it.

As far as recommendations, I haven't listened to much garage, so can't really give anything there. For trance, I'd suggest listening to some episodes of Armin Van Buuren's A State of Trance radio show, or his yearly compilation albums of the show's best, also called A State of Trance. A lot of different trance artists featured on there, you'll probably find something you like.

Wow that seems even more arbitrary than how some metal genres are distinguished. Well at least I know that that's the reason why they sound the same to my untrained ears. I'll try that guy's show/albums and see if I can find anything I like. Also do most songs in these genres typically have vocals? I've noticed the garage songs I've heard seem to use them a lot and house/trance and those will have vocals samples occasionally. Are there any similar electronic genres that more often than not are just instrumental?

I think it's really an even split for pretty much all the genres, in terms of vocals. The usual indicator you'll see is when a song has a featured artist. A lot of times that's a vocalist, since the song producers themselves rarely, if ever, do vocals. Though sampling could be in anything, so I guess you really don't know until you listen to it.
