Epithet Discussion Thread

As the title says, feel free to discuss anything related to epithets, your favourite one, which ones you would change (Cotton Candy Lover?), and maybe the reasons behind some the epithets (like with the Blackbeard Pirates?).

I apologize if this isn't a big enough topic to deserve it's own thread but I thought it could bring up some interesting conversation.

First off I'm saying Van Augur has got the coolest sounding Epithet.

And Doflamingo's really makes me wonder how he got it…

Anyways, discuss away!

Sorry but how are van Augur and Doflamingo epithets? As far as I know those are just their names.

Eeh as for me I really like Bartolomeo "The Cannibal" because he's not really a cannibal but it has a deeper meaning to it which really suits his personality.
Cavendish' sounds a bit weird to me (White Horse? I ain't seeing no horse) but maybe it'll get explained a bit more later on.
Aside from that there aren't many I can come up with that I really like. One other I find weird is Kid's, "Captain". Just Captain…... why?

The OP meant to say that augur's epithet is cool and about DD's which are respectively "The supesonic" and "Heavenly yaksha".
As for me I find "Dark king" and "surgeon of death" cool.

Just a question, anyone know if Epithets are actively used in any other manga? I know Oda didn't come up with the idea of an epithet obviously, but I've never really seen it outside of One Piece

If you remember that his other epithet is "pirate prince", and how the female tournament organizers were reacting to him, it should be rather obvious.

At least Fairy Tail uses them, with Erza being called "Titania" and Natsu "Salamander" (though for some reason no-one calls him that anymore, but he was barely called anything else at the start of the series). And since epithets aren't exactly a new and original phenomenon, it would be very weird if there weren't many series with them.

Yea I thought something like that. Still, I find that it sounds a little bit weird, so I thought maybe he does have a horse which couldn't enter the tournament or something.

An "epithet" is just a nickname, like a word or phrase related to a quality any given person/thing possesses, so you see them all the time outside of One Piece, you just don't know it; other synonymous terms would be alias, moniker, sobriquet, pseudonym. I know there are subtle differences between the terms used though, and I don't think the Japanese equivalent of 'epithet' is even used in One Piece, so I'm assuming you got the term from the One Piece wikia?

Yea, I know. It's probably just because of that.
Though I still wondered if there wasn't more to it…. He already has a sword, the face and the clothing. All he needs is either a real horse or a horse variant of the Sunny.

...... my god that last thought only just occurred ot me and it sounds fabulously awesome....

Oda said so in an early SBS I believe, but I'm pretty sure he was joking/ has changed his mind.

Isn't japanese word for Mustache combined with beard? So that would make him Blackbeard wouldn't it - Also Shanks had the Strawhat before Roger became the Pirate King.

I thought he was just called Gold Roger - because of that speach to Whitebeard - saying it was Gol D Roger

Roger's epithet was indeed "Gold" Roger. The government probably came up with it intentionally in order to make his connection with the Will of D less obvious.

In my copy of One Piece Green, it says that it was actually originally intended to be nosehair (and in Roger's first panel, it does indeed look like it's growing from his nose and not his upper lip, though you can't say for sure), but as Roger's character grew more serious, he thought that it was too silly and retconned it into an actual moustache. Fair deal, though it seems unusually solemn from Oda who draws guys with zippers for mouths and a fairly serious-minded character who is called "Strawberry" and has a 2 meter long head.

Yes, it was . But I thought the epithet "Black nosehair" is ludicrous .

He said in One Piece Green that in Romance Dawn as well as chapter 1 the mustaches was actually nosehair, but as One Piece progressed he realized that Roger was actually going to become a pretty important character to the story so he changed it to a mustache in all his later appearances.

He's based on William Kidd, who was also known as "Captain Kidd".

I thought "Black Leg" Sanji was pretty cool at the time, but now that Haki and its blackening effect has been introduced, it kinda lost its uniqueness.

! Zephyr was called "Black Arm" in the Z film because he mastered his Haki.

Conversely, I think "Red Leg" Zeff is one of the cooler nicknames around.

Where might First Son of the Sea come from? The fact that Jinbe was the first Fishman to be a war lord? Is that even his title? I feel like I'm missing the word Knight somewhere.

No, that was just a mistranslation. Moria doesn't have an epithet.

i agree.i sincerely wish oda would change it somewhere along the way.all the other crew members have great ones though,even chopper's is fine.

I wonder if Moria's Epithet will ever be shown (or if he will even end of having one), maybe when he's shows up sometime when the Strawhats face Kaido?

I think its supposed to mean "Strongest Fishman" with first in this case just meaning "Best".

Would someone be able to clear up for me what Killer's epithet is?

I've seen a few different translations of it, the most common seems to be "Massacre Soldier". They're all pretty cool but I'd like to know the literal translation.

First part: "slaughter/massacre"
Second part: literally, "military man," but "soldier" is much more natural.

And yes, Moriah does not in fact have an epithet.
