I'm fed up with Eset constantly breaking and I also want my computer to be rid of as many illegally downloaded softwares as possible.

I've been searching a little bit, but I'm not exactly the best at this. My granddad really likes Avast and he says its free version is more than enough for home use. What are your opinions?

try kaspersky. it helped me get rid of a virus problem few years back on my old computer and has been my go to antivirus software since. you have to pay to buy plus the renewals…but it's worth the protection.

Avast should be fine for what you're looking for, although AVG and Avira are good choices too. I personally use Comodo, but it can be a little hard to use because it likes to ask you for authorization to do stuff instead of just doing it, so you need to know what it's talking about.

Not quite free but you can get a lifetime subscription to SuperAntiSpyware for around $30. That's what I use. I think Avast is pretty highly regarded though.

I've never used anything else but Avira and I only had a virus cause trouble once - and I think I was partly responsible for that.

avast is good, but it uses a lot of resourses. I use AVG currently. I don't know if it is awesome, but it is good at the very least

                      AVG works for me!

Though I have used and enjoyed Avast on past computers, AVG really covers all my bases quite nicely, and I haven't had virus problems since installing it.

I used to use Avira, and it was always pretty good, but the new version is crap. My laptop didn't realize it was a antivirus programm, and I couldn't update at all. It said I had to start a planer to update, and I did, but i still didn't update. I was not the only one with that problem, and apparently it's still not fixed.

Now I use Kaspersky and it's great. I didn't need to pay anything because I got it with a Computer magazine CD (In my case, ComputerBild). But it's license only runs for 3 Month.
The suggestions here are really useful for me too 😃

I don't have any viruses right now, I just want to be more "legal".

Thanks for the advice guys! Greatly appreciated!

While I'm here, I'd like to ask one last question. My brother recently recommended me Auslogics boostspeed for whatever reason (I have to admit, I'm not good at this stuff). I wonder if it's really that necessary or if there's a free product that does basically the same.

Nevermind, I looked better and found out CCcleaner is for that purpose too. Sorry…

And thank you very much again!

I have one more question though.

What does Spybot does that for example an antivirus doesn't? Almost all of these antivirus program are also anti-spyware programs. Also Malwarebytes. I'm just asking this, because I don't want tons of new antivirus-spyware-malware programs on my comp if just one is good enough. I'm also afraid they may bother each other or something…

It just saved me when other programs could not. You can say it finds the more trickier kinds of malware.
It's sort of a last resort thing to use after you scan with your default program and still see problems. That's unless the malware blocks the program from opening(I'm serious, there are some try tries to prevent you from using Malwarebytes).

But this was a long time ago. I'm sure other programs these days have the definitions to be a good as Malwarebytes.
And Spybot… I don't know. It was just always a decent tool I've used for years. You can't go wrong. Honestly the best thing out there is "Hijack this", but that is really complicated and risky as hell to use... even with with help from experts online. Not reccomended.

You can use Spybot together with AVG too. They don't get in each other's way.

Thank you very much for the advice again!

I decided to download MSE (though I looked through all of them) because it seemed like the only really "whole" program.
CCleaner took the place of Auslogics Boostspeed and although it's still just a "home-version", I'm more than satisfied with its tools.

I have yet to decide if I'll install Spybot (pro is that it's also fully free). I guess I'll try it out.

Hey, sorry for bumping this not-so-new thread, but I've got some questions that I should probably ask here, so… yeah.

I'm planning on formatting my hard drive sometime next week, and when I do I'm gonna need a new anti-virus program when I'm re-installing all my stuff. Now, the thing is that my pc isn't very new or very good; in fact, it's actually rather lousy and above all it's pretty slow. So, what I'm looking for is a good (free) anti-virus program that isn't very "heavy" and that doesn't use a lot of my PC's resources and doesn't slow it down too much.
Currently, I'm using Avast, which is working fine as anti-virus program, but it's really making my slow PC much slower than it already is; and when Avast starts updating itself (which happens quite often, and without warning) it even gets so bad that I pretty much can't do anything for ten to fifteen minutes. I have also used AVG in the past, but for some reason (actually, I can't remember why) I wasn't satisfied with it, so I switched to Avast.

So, yeah, does anyone have some recommendations for me? Thanks in advance!

AVAST with Malwarebytes. I never got my computer and laptop infected ever since I had use both.

                                            Kaspersky forever.

My techie friend also recommended to me ESET NOD32.

AVG sucks as hell. Tried it once, got a shitload of virus despite not having visited any risky/unsafe sites. Switched to Kaspersky and never went back to it.

You're the only one here who knows to trace the malignant scripts, to disassemble them, and to tame them to become your pets.

Truth be told, though, I have had Avira for a few years (and I just now switched to using AVG on my brand new laptop) and it hasn't caught anything in the last two or so years. I don't think it's really needed, but it gives you that nice sense of security that you wouldn't always have otherwise.

I had great problems with Norton. Kaspersky has been the best for me till now. AVG had problems with some Trojan Virus. Avira was average.
