        Just go for x=whatever. ie if 4x^2+24x+36=0, then x=(-24 +/- sqrt576-576)/8, x=-3. :E

          Whatever you do to one side of the equal sign, do to the other. Work towards something in the form x=(something).

          For example:

          7x + 35 = 49

          Subtract 35 from each side:

          7x + 35 - 35 = 49 - 35
          7x = 14

          Divide both side by 7:

          7x / 7 = 14 / 7

          x = 2
