This is a thread to discuss anything about cover songs. Covers can often be rehash or worthless in the face of the original song, but other times, bands play good tributes or put a really interesting spin on their subject.

Anyways, what are your favorite covers? What are some interesting covers you found? What do you think about covers? Are you sick of seeing the word covers, yet? Discuss.

Recently, I've been loving the hell out of Ghoul's cover of "What a Wonderful World." It's the cover that prompted me to make this thread. It's pretty much a metal/punk parody of the original, but there's something about it beyond the humor that puts a grin on my face. The upbeat punky riffing over goofily sung lyrics about reveling in a post-apocalyptic wasteland make me so happy, the way the original intended to do. It's weird, since it is a joke on the Louis Armstrong song, but at the same time it feels true to the spirit, but in a way that a sarcastic metal numbskull like myself can digest.

In the 70's there was a Swedish rock and roll band called "Kal P Dal", kinda popular. They made several covers of famous English/US songs translated to the Scanian dialect. I use the world translation loosely, they changed it pretty substantially.

        Here's an example:

EDIT: Ignore the video, it has nothing to do with the song, hahaha. 🙂

Which is a cover of Frees "All Right Now".

          I don't like Bruce Springsteen's version.

Also, that one guy on American Idol a bit ago that did a cover of Golddigger was really good.

If you want some really weird covers (and Sarfallet likely already knows about this), I just remmebered the Residents' album "Third Reich N Roll." The album is a very odd, experimental and unique take on a bunch of pop songs from that day and age. The entire album is a collage of these weird covers and is really fun if you have a tolerance for the bizarre:

If you have trouble deconstructing it, the wikipedia page has list of the various components in order.

Hahaha. 😊 I did know about it… At least I did a few years ago. Didn't think of it for one second when reading this thread.

Here's a few covers, or whatever you wanna call 'em, of "Bye Bye Blackbird" Ray Henderson and Mort Dixon. In what I hope is chronological order:

                Gene Austin
                [hide]

                Miles Davis

                Johnny and the Hurricanes

                Liza Minelli

I think we all agree that the Johnny and the Hurricanes version is the best. 🆒 I do agree to that at least. Which is pretty much the same thing.

You want to do this Star Trek thing? Because I will throw down hard. Don't make me go all Leonard Nimoy covers way too many things on your ass! I would post them all now, but I find that course of action… highly illogical.

                    So, here's a cover I really despise… 😛

                    Andrews Sisters
                    [hide]

cover of Lord Invaders "Rum and Coca-Cola"
                    [hide]

It's bad 'cause, well long story… (and here it is on wikipedia). But to make a long story short, the original is like social commentary about prostitution and stuff and was stolen/plagiarised by Morey Amsterdam and then given to the Andrew Sisters for which it became a huge hit… :getlost:

Worst covers? That's an interesting one. If I can go with a worst category of covers, then it has to be shitty bands covering Astro Zombies to show everyone how punk they are. There are too many shitty bands that cover Astro Zombies to show everyone how punk they are. If that is the limit of how punk they are, then they would be better suited for desk jobs.

I love the song Astro Zombies, but dear god the covers hurt me. The Dead Milkmen are excused because they are a good band, I'm fairly certain they did their cover as a joke.

So here's another one I really can't stand… It's by a Swedish guy called Robert Wells that I really don't get but that was quite popular back in the days. Might still be, I'm not that up to date on the subject. Thank you, hypothetical mighty being(s)! 😛
