Chopper’s story is an especially heart-wrenching one. It follows a young child who finds himself not belonging in any one group. He’s not reindeer enough to stay with the pack, but not human enough to live among them, either. It’s only after he meets the eccentric Dr. Hiriluk that he finally has a place to call his own - someone who doesn’t care what he is, but rather, who he is.
And then, tragedy strikes and his own hand ends up killing the man he has grown to see as not only a mentor and friend, but also a quasi-father figure. These scars soon become a part of his psyche and he cannot bring himself to trust humans until Luffy finally enters the scene and unlocks the chains on his heart.
It’s a sad story, but one that can give us hope. Out there in the world, or even in our own lives, there are people who lock themselves away from all. They might have done so to avoid future hurt or because they felt they couldn’t relate to others or because they just don’t want to care but one day, some day in the future, there is hope. Hope that they too might find someone who has the keys to their heart and who will be able to open those locks and let in the world.
