Dangan Ronpa (Translated VN via SA) [Spoilers through DRV3]
-
Ugh paywall.
Honestly it's better to read in large chunks anyway (or at least that's how I'm going to validate the pain).
-
I finished the first game's LP juuust before the pay wall went up again, and I can safely say this is one of the of the best games I've ever played (well- read, but you know what I mean). So awesome.
Unfortunately I got the end spoiled when I looked up what all that JUNKOS bru-ha-ha in the thread was all about, but eh, what can ya' do.
-
According to this they're gonna "comicalize" a new manga in Shonen Ace
…
-
Kinda weird they would do that since there's already a DR manga, and from what people told me, it isn't even finished yet.
If that's a manga for the anime I guess it's right to think that the designs in that are close to how they will be in the anime? If so, I like it, it close enough to the game designs, but let's see how they will be in movement.
-
I PM'd orenronen. He says it's a manga adaptation for the up-coming anime that will start in this month's issue of Shonen Ace.
He also said there is a DR1 manga, first published as a web-exclusive on Famitsu's website and now available in paperback. It shows the events of DR1 from the POV of the killers and victims, so it's not a straight adaptation. Apparently there are also several DR2 manga adaptations, ranging from straight adaptations to "what if" scenarios. Pretty cool overall.

Ah yeah, the leon one was posted a while back.
I felt kinda bad for him if that's ACTUALLY how that "murder" went down.
Screw Maizono to the highest degree.
Leon: "I just want to talk."
Maizono: "Oh no he's gonna kill me! HERPA DERPA"
Leon: "Stop fighting me and listen!"
Maizono: "By struggling I landed on the knife! I can't believe Leon KILLED ME!"
I suppose Leon was stupid for going back I guess, but that really burned my biscuits.
-
Apparently this says the anime will air in the summer:

Jfc the paywall's taking forever to come down. :|
-
My brother caved and paid, lol
-
-
Well the paywall should almost be over and if I think right the next update will be the one righ before the first trial, so you have a lot of stuff to catch up, and it's good thing too since I want to post some of my theories here.
This murder is really more complicated than DR1 first one. There's no 11037 in here.

Good, because the only murder that actually got me in the first one was Togami fucking with the murder of hacker (I can't remember her name).
-
Chihiro Fujisaki was her name. : )
Also good news: the upcoming trial videos will be completely subtitled (not youtube annotated, actual subtitles) by me and another person. The voice acting in this game is too good to miss.
-
Thank you and everyone else who's been helping Oren make it a more "high-budget" LP experience
-
Yeah wow that should be great back in DR1 I like read the text while watching the videos in another window, that was kinda of a bother to do affectly.
Thank you very much for this!
-
I honestly didn't mind the annotations, but hey, not gonna complain about actual subtitles!
-
This has been a really shitty couple of updates.
-
Oh and, I bet you guys are interested in seeing new stuff for the anime that's coming this summer? Cause I sure am!
I couldn't manage to find the thread under the Anime forum section, so I'll just post this here.
!
!
They've definitely done a good job with capturing the likeness of the game's art style, and Monobear looks pretty adorable with his stubby feet flailing around.
-
The drought of updates is finally~ over! Paywall's down, go catch up with every single bit of content!
-
Paywall is down. Just caught up.
! It was totally Hanamura, wasn't it?
Also, I'm kinda surprised how helpful this cast is compared to the previous one.
-
Ah great the paywall is down. Good for you guys! I knew it would happen right before the trial too.
I will post more on my thought about who I think is the culprit later because I'm pretty tired to write a big post.
! But fuck it was Togami the first to go, he had been a walking death flag all so I wasn't really shocked but still, man he was such a nice guy this time around, and from it looks like he died trying to protect them. He was a good leader.
! I said before that if Togami died I thought the culprit would be Nagito, it would be a Dangan Ronpa thing to get rid of the the more DR 1 characters, now with the way I saw things at first it looked like Nagito was the culprit, but now I only think he tried to kill someone.
I don't know what that guy is even planning but he looked suspicous during the whole investigation bit. If the creators are making him the big red herring of this chapter (like Naegi was to the others character in DR1 chapter 1) than they are doing a good job -

Also, I'm kinda surprised how helpful this cast is compared to the previous one.
! I sincerely hope not. As far as I'm concerned, he went from uncomfortably skeevy at his introduction, to amazingly, hilariously skeevy the moment he decided he was cool with taking a swing at hitting on Coach, and I refuse to understand how anyone could think otherwise.
-
I'm the type that doesn't want to figure out the mystery beforehand and just wants to be surprised along the way

Yeah, I'm pretty sure I know who did it. but I'm still not 100% on how he pulled it off, that was a really convoluted plan there.
I mean.. how did he know Togami had night vision goggles? Why Togami of all people? How did he return back so fast? Why was the bathroom locked? (unless that's the path to under the cabin) And who left that note? it did more harm than good.
All I know for certain is that: A) the skewer is the weapon (obviously) B) The blanket found in the hamper was to stop the killer from getting blood on himself C) if the killer is who I think it is, his execution is gonna be horrible
He's kinda obvious due to his dialogue right before they go into the elevator
! I'm almost 100% its the chef
-
Instead of writing a post of my own pyromonki wrote pretty much what I was gonna post so I will just answer these parts according to what I think.
I mean.. how did he know Togami had night vision goggles? Why Togami of all people? How did he return back so fast? Why was the bathroom locked? (unless that's the path to under the cabin) And who left that note? it did more harm than good.
! Okay I really think that culprit was targeting Komaeda. What I think happened was that the culprit saw Komaeda put the knife under the table and prepare the blackout, the culprit must have thought that by using another person's plan he could get away with it. The problem is that both the culrpit and Komaeda didn't know about the night googles so Togami stopped Komaeda's plan but got killed instead. Hanamura is the only person I can see with this because he was the only one in the logde before the party besides Komaeda.
! "How did he return back so fast?"-If you are talking about how we hear his voice during the blackout, he probably is talking from under the floor, when the lights come back on we don't see him in the hall with the others, we only see him there right before finding the body.
! About the locked bathroom, it's probably Peko who has some shitting problems I guess, Nidai says that it was locked before the party until after finding the body so if she really was in there it gives her a alibi. Kuzuryuu and Nanami also have a alibi because they saw each other, the only person without one is Hanamura so yeah.
Also the entrance to under the floor must be in the storage room because the table cloth with all the blood is there and Gundam found his earing so there must be one in the lodge.
! About the note, this one I'm not sure but if Komaeda planned the murder with the knife i guess it would be him? Perhaps he knew by sending the note, Togami would plan the party? Komaeda did have those sticks to see who would clean the hall when he couldn't know there was gonna be a party, and he lost that game…...it could only be him.
! The only questions I have left are:
-How did Hanamura moved in that blackout? I don't believe there's anything to be used to do that, so unless we have another pair of Night goggles under the floor I'm stumped.
-Where's the missing skewer? Was it left underground? I don't belive it was because if that was the case might as well leave the bloody tablecloth in there also. I can't really see a place to hide it. -
Something interesting I've noted (my Japanese is nonformal and everything I know I've picked up as a kid to an adult, conversationally somewhat but mostly read-only, and even then the conversational is a hick dialect)
Two characters have changed for me after having played in Japanese and then read the oren translation. I will chalk it up a little to some language miscommunication on my end (or rather, some things kind of going in one ear and coming out the other warped a little). The photographer I found incredibly bland in JP, but I get more of her character here that I missed in the original. Maybe she was a little too subtle for me to pick up on. I find her kind of charming now, whereas originally I thought 'god she's bland'.
The dancer I have no explanation for. I found her annoying. Now I think she's hilarious as hell. I honestly cannot guess as to what went through my head during my playthrough at all, I think she's great now, but she rubbed me the wrong way entirely before…
Everybody else is exactly the same though as far as what I think of them and I don't think I gaffed on anything there. Maybe Gundam isn't quite as hilarious. That's about it.
-
I like what Gundam calls his hamsters:
破壊神暗黒四天王
The FOUR HEAVENLY DARK DESTRUCTION GOD-EMPERORS
-
Oren did say that Gundam(and Sonia too I think) was one of the most dificult characters to translate so I guess it's normal that most of his flavor, if you will, gets lost in the translation, well I sfind him hilarious still so heh.
-
Gundam's voice is also really, really amazing
-

-

! If you are talking about the portable hot-pot stove when that update came out I asked the thread thinking the same thing but they shut down my theory saying how it wouldn't give enough light and holding something like that for too long would burn your hand or something.
! But yeah if he used that (and it is the only thing avaiable) then I think that pretty much says he's guilty because everyone else never left the party or have alibis so Hanamura is the only person who has acess to that….another nail to his coffinOh but as I said before I really like how this case is way more complicaded than the DR1 first one. While I think many people have the right answer already, that's only because of the LP format and the fact that we have way more time to think about stuff and review the game text.
A good example of this is DR1 chapter 4 where many people guessed the suicide thing before the trial but on it's own the case was complicaded and if you were playing normally you wouldn't get it. Well all the trials besides 1 and 3 (even if you couldn't guess how it was pulled off I bet many players knew it was Celes from the get go) were like that really.
-
Gundam's voice is also really, really amazing
Pretty much. I think the next update will be posted either tonight or early tomorrow so make sure to watch those youtube videos! I worked hard on 'em!

I would never have been able to get past Gundam going HAKAISHINANKOKUSHITENNOU without its lulz factor crippling my subbing capabilities
-
First we had the gun thing with bullets but now we have swords!!!! Next game we will have a mini-fighting game. Let's fight the words with our fists!
All kidding aside I love this new mechanic because it's basically the other characters pulling a Naegi(or Hinata in this case) and doing their own "you got that wrong!!" and it's great! Also the subtitles are great and it's awesome to see the game in action and be able to understand it, good job on those!
We didn't learn much from this update but what a great start! -
I have a problem with the way one of Souda's lines was translated
After Owari goes "Oh Togami, that joker!" they have Mr. Mechanic go "Weren't you paying any attention at all!" when in fact what he said is more along the lines of "Didn't you grasp Togami's character at all!?" It's funnier that way
-
So I caved and watched the whole trial on YT, it's fantastic
But now I'm plagued by the stupid "ethics" and "self-restraint" of the LPers who won't record past Chapter 1
-
Yeah oren said that there aren't any videos past chapter 1 even for DR1, dunno how it will be when the english patches come out and people want to post videos and let's plays because acording to oren Spike deletes all post chapter 1 game-content (blind let's play should be a cool ting just to see some people's reactions) I guess streams are avaiable for that.
-
maaaan the english patch crew for DR1 (project zetsubou) has some really questionable translations. I'd hate to be too negative but it's kind of weary.
Now, I think I'm a shoddy translator and I could never put my money where my mouth is, so these are just observatiosn based on what they provided in their notes. The idea they outlined of localizing the talents into recognizable titles instead of just a listing of their profession is a really great one and I support that idea. They have one, "High Roller" for Celes that I think is A+, instead of calling her a "Gambler". I actually really like it as a title for her. But the other ones I… I can't deal with them. Calling Mondo a "One Percenter" instead of "Biker" is kind of a terrible localization because unless I'm missing something, that's a hella esoteric in-group term that a generally speaking audience is not going to associate with biker gang subculture.
Which I was pretty sure was kind of going against the purpose of localization? I don't think calling leon a "Fireballer" is a good one either... Like, I support the "why", I just feel like they're kinda hamfisted. I also don't understand why, if they wanna go that route, they are keeping the terms Monokuma instead of calling him Monobear. IDK.
It's really cool that they got together to make a translation though and, you know, having a genuine english patch is never a bad thing. It's surely not script-breaking stuff. It's just kinda ... ...

Because "Monokuma" is PUUUUUURE; actually it's probably just to be different from Oren's trans
"One Percenter" just makes Mondo sound like he's rich or something, if anything that should be Togami's epithet
-
To be honest I had a feeling that's what some of it was about, just making it different from oren. Calling them Super Duper High School Level felt a tad contrarian and not at all fluid like the reason they gave.
Other issues I had in general was the real inconsistency as to whether they had a special title, a job description, or just a flat reading for their SHSL things. I think it destroys their support for their decisions? Saying Mondo is a "One Percenter" but just calling Junko a "Supermodel" makes it seem silly that they consider it an issue to call him a "Biker" at all. Another one is calling Oofumi a SHSL "Otaku". I can get DOUJINDUDE being a tough translation, but being an otaku is just part of his life, his talent was his role in the otaku field at being an author and artist.
And isn't Otaku not being a localization at all? I don't think they know what kind of translation they want it to be.
The same goes for Fukawa being a … Bookworm? That makes her sound like a reading and not a published author. Just entirely different things.
I really didn't wanna be hard on this translation but some of this stuff is just making me groan. ILU Project Zetsubou :')

I'm all for liberal translations, but come on. "Bookworm" is just terrible. I wouldn't even use "Supermodel" when the more accurate "Fashion Star" is available

On the positive side of things, they apparently got the flashing anagram game to work! That's a definite kudos!

Flashing Anagram, now there's a name that should be localized into something that makes sense

Thanks for your hard work! The trial has been great fun so far.

I was meaning to ask - when does new manga adaptation is coming out? This month or May?
I'm asking cause I have plans to translate it, and I don't want to miss the chance. We already took existing manga as a project, but without proper context (and because nobody knows english here and can't read LP) it was a bit of a failure. I do hope situation will change when anime comes out. It's a shame that lots of great stuff (like DR) is basically unknown here because of the language issue. -
This game keeps getting better and better.
-
Nidai is hilarious
-
Nidai is the best ever, I laughed so much when he said that no one in their right mind would say they were in the toilet taking a shit. And Ibuki's comment about killing off the two glasses characters also made me laugh.
I love this series and the characters so much wow.
