Chapter 683: A Girl Like Ice
-
-
Yeah, no shit Law resembles Zoro. Looks AND Personality;
bland fan-girl baitcookie-cutter bad-ass. (Sorry, zachri) -
And I still don't understand what Smoker's saying at the end of the chapter.
My guess would be he calls Vergo a piece trash who looks down on the marine.
-
He probably forgot to. He will then lose when smoker reminds him that he should be naming them.
This makes me think that Vergo is the NW version of Gedatsu lol
-
I liked this chapter a lot. It was chaotic but there was a lot of interesting stuff going on. I just really hope that Vergo doesn't have a DF. Everyone was expecting WB to not have one as well, but it turned out he did. I want a strong character that doesn't have one, and so far Vergo looks like one. I want more Doflamingo though as well.
16 chars of Shanks?

Garp, Shanks, Mihawk, and Jinbe come to mind.

Rayleigh is unhappy because you forgot him. :ninja:
And of course Brownbeard. :ninja:
But I think he meant a new character without a DF.

16 chars of rayleigh?

probably, but we're not sure of that.
does zoro count or is he not strong enough?
-
@steven:
probably, but we're not sure of that.

You're going to start up another Sanji vs. Zoro debate if you keep that up. Also, Roger wasn't held in seastone shackles when he was executed, so he has that going for him.
-
I think roger might have been a DF user. In the skypia arc you see Roger inscription on the bellfry and later rayleigh explains he has some power which lets hear the voice of all things. Going by those lines he might have some kind of fruit which enables him to understand any language/emotion/secret…etc
-

Probably also means a villain without one. So far the only main villain without a DF outside of the East Blue has been Hordy Jones, and it would be interesting to see some more.

While I'm not sure that would be precisely it, I do actually like the idea that he does have a DF, but its something completely useless in a stand-up fight and he became king of the pirates anyway.
-
Buggy arc: Luffy gets imprisoned by Nami because he was too naive, and incapacitated for some chapters.
Kuro arc: Luffy falls asleep under Jango's comand.
Arlong arc: Luffy does a "stupid" attack and as a consequence gets thrown to the bottom of the sea by Arlong.
Little Garden: Luffy gets stuck under a mountain by a giant, and then gets constantly fucked over by Miss Goldenweek traps.
Skypiea: Luffy gets swallowed by a snake and then gets a giant golden ball attached to his arm, both times getting him away from the fight.
Foxy arc: Luffy gets constantly cheated by Foxy because of his extreme naivete.
Water Seven: Luffy gets stuck between 2 buildings.
Impel Down: In an incredibly tense race against time to save his brother, he finds the time to fuck around with that Sphinx and starts playing whack-a-mole with Mr. 3 clones . . .
Do I even need to continue? That's Luffy, take it or leave it. In the end, he'll get shit done and that's it. 2 years of training weren't gonna change that.
Reading this sort of reminded me of when I first read the manga up to the end of Enies Lobby, where after a while I could sort of see this sort of thing coming. I mean, it was frustrating, but it added to the entertainment. Like bizarre or stupid things that I'd only expect from Luffy, and it was usually done in a pretty funny way.
I admit, it's a little contrived how Luffy almost always managed to strangely get himself out of the picture temporarily so the victory would be more hard-fought and, when things are at their bleakest, Luffy manages to get back into action and turn things around with Kuro, Arlong, Little Garden, and Skypeia being the most classic examples. However, it seemed like something that stopped happening after Enies Lobby for the most part–at least to the extent of Luffy being completely incapacitated in some bizarre way like getting stuck between two buildings, getting his feet caught in cement and thrown into the sea, getting pinned under a mountain, or getting trapped in a snake for 15 chapters.
This business with the junk room under the lab might mark its return of the "TKO" formula if he's stuck down there for an extended period. Though it could just be a much shorter delay like the obstacles/diversions in Impel Down and Marineford.

On Fishman arc, when the Sea Kings stop Noah they say that Roger (they said someone, but there is a mini flashback showing Roger) also heard them, so I would say that more than a DF it has to be something more in the lines of Haki of some sort, because Luffy also heard them and he can not have 2 DF's :)
-
hmmm or maybe something to do with "D"… anyway what was the point to hide the candy? y dint he just destroy it? does he want to analyze it further or adminisiter smaller dosages to the children to ease out the withdrawal symptoms?? unlikely
My kids would be so lucky as they would be able to read the whole one piece at a stretch.

Even though there is absolutely no evidence behind it, I love the theory that Roger at the hito-hito no mi (human-human) before Chopper. Which in turn somehow gave him insane hax abilities.
In reality, I doubt this is the case but it would be so awesome to see what would happen if a human were to eat the fruit.

Luffy will always be silly and goofy (and incompetent as some of you say) but you should really read the chapter again and see what really happened.. A few chapters ago Monet created her snow hut and Luffy barely/just broke through it (it was completely solid and dense, Luffy couldn't even touch Caesar) Now we have Monet creating a full snow hut 10x thicker and all around Luffy. What can he do? He can't fight Monet and get rid of the snow hut at the same time (and Monet even knew a fight with Luffy wouldn't end well) Luffy stands there momentarily not knowing what to do and Monet swoops down and embraces him, trying to freeze him / put him to sleep … On instinct / sudden reaction (/with hidden potential) he snaps out of it and rapidly uses Jet Spear. See his smile? It's a sense of accomplishment (for snapping out of it) but they both realise that his attack was too strong he destroyed the floor and he fell into the ducts It's not Luffy's fault guys... don't blame his stupidity , blame Monet's brain

That sounds like a rehash of Lola and the Rolling Pirates.

Damn you Monet's brain!

He did summon his heart and then Vergo Soru'd over to him and kicked it out of his grasp.
Oh okay. Soru just wasn't clear to me.
-
That sounds like a rehash of Lola and the Rolling Pirates.
Except Lola and her crew were the ones who needed help. Depending on how serious monets statement was luffy might actually end up freeing anyone who's down there.. Then they could help against the guards if brownbeard hasn't already turned them against Caesar by then
-
Why didn't Chopper use Guard Point to block the door? :ninja:
Because after he uses Monster Point, he can't move.
-
If Roger had a DF, it's possible that one of the people present at his execution has it now, since we've just had revealed that the DF power goes into the nearest fruit upon the user's death, unless it's intercepted, like in Whitebeard's case. Which also brings up the question of what happened to Ace's fruit? We need to know more, unfortunately. Perhaps the nearest fruit has to be within a certain proximity of the deceased DF user's body for the transfer to work, otherwise it either goes to a random place in the world or just vanishes from history completely. How ironic would it be if Doflamingo was the one who obtained Roger's fruit? It could potentially be Doflamingo, Mihawk, Crocodile… only Buggy (that we know of) already had his DF at that point.

I'm imagining hax Haki abilities. Like he understands Haki completely. Like A Jedi becoming one with the force.

Sengoku ate a Human Human fruit, the daibutsu model, and lookie what happened to him. Blinged up and firing shockwaves up in yo' shit.

Oda said in the SBS of volume 20 that if a person would ate the hito hito no mi that he would be "enlightened" and that it would increase all the senses…
something mysterious like that.
-
I always imagined that the term "enlightened" used by Oda was in the Buddhism sense.

@Jet:

IMO this was one of the most stupid DFs, I mean Sengoku looked kewl when transformed, but shockwaves? As if he couldn't have broken Mr.3's wax wall with "mere" CoA.
Also I think this SAD sucks DFs out of bodies and puts them into nearby normal fruits (like as seen with Smilie and those apples). The reason why Luffy has to kidnap CC could be to test it on him or to just receive the powerful gas Logia fruit. We'll have to wait again how this all turns out. -
Either way Sanji's kicks did more to Vergo than Law's counter shock did.
So, we compare a surprise attack Diable Jambe to the head:
!
To a counter shock pointed at Vergo's arm, from a barely hanging on Law?
!
Okay. Lets compare the result:
Sanji's kick:
!
Law's "not working" counter shock.
!
Both times Vergo spits blood, while he got a proper toasting on top from Law's shock. But again, do we really compare the circumstances now? Because if we do, nothing to be proud of there.
And even before Vergo retrieved the heart again it appeared Law's abilities were going to be no match against the brute force of Vergo. I'm proud of Sanji too.
How do you come to the conclusion that Law is no match against power and speed? Because I don't know, he did quite well against speed and power, judging from his fight with Smoker. Who, apparently, is as speedy as Luffy when he runs so fast that the ground catches fire.
!
Just a funny gif by Warp Predator that fits quite well here.
Anyway, I think it does say something that Sanji's first kick did some damage to Vergo, but saying he did better than Law is really a stretch, sorry.
Also.
!
-
@Badass:
Because after he uses Monster Point, he can't move.
I meant instead of Monster Point, not after. :ninja:
-
Actually, given that Vergo is apparently completely unaffected mentally by all the attacks he's taken so far, I wonder if he's able to feel pain at all. The way he took those Diable Jambes to the face against Sanji and then act like it was nothing makes me think that attacks to his body aren't hurting him, and given how he acted after taking countershock reminded me of the joke when a humanoid robot gets its head almost ripped off and continues to talk like nothing happened.
Also, wasn't he introduced as the demon bamboo? Aside from using it to smack down Law the first time, he hasn't done anything with his bamboo stick. I wonder if we'll see that again when he fights smoker.
-
Smoker vs. Vergo isn't gonna be a fair fight. It'll start off uninterrupted, then Caesar will arrive and start squishing Smoker's heart giving Vergo the upper hand and the win. Afterwards CC and Vergo will escape to Dressrosa on a SAD tanker, leaving the Straw Hats to deal with Baby 5 and Buffalo.

EDIT:
His demeanor as well as the "cool shades" and the way he takes and deals damage does make me thin it may be something related to Pacifistas.
Perhaps Caesar's own take on the technology?Perhaps, except Caesar doesn't give any indication that he is Vergo's creator.
I REALLY AM GETTING ANNOYED OF LUFFYS STUPIDITY… even after the 2 years of training, and Zoro just recently telling him to get his shit together, because this is
the new world.
He has the observation haki.. is focused in battle yet makes such silly mistakesBut that is just the Luffy we all know, he is going to be silly and goofy until things get real. I was recently watching the CP9 arc, when things got serious so did Luffy. If Luffy did anything else in a time like this, I would fear he might "jump the shark."
@The:
I'm pretty sure there will be a "wake-up call moment" when Luffy and crew try to take on Big Mam and crew. I foresee a devastating loss, which, will wake Luffy up (and any other cocky Strawhat's).
Has this happened before prior to the time skip, if so I don't recall it. The closets I can recall would be when he fought CP9, because he had to come up with a new move.
-

I must admit that this would piss me off greatly. I don't care who wins (despite Smoker needing redemption). It's time for a proper fight without handicaps or gap in power, a fight where we can't make any predictions because both opponents face each other as equals. This time someone has to go down in the good old fashioned way, and Smoker reclaiming the pride of the marines would be something.
But I guess we won't see much in the next chapter, probably all buildup with Luffy meeting Momonosuke and the other Straw Hat's dealing with the kids / Monet.

I think Marineford opened Luffy's eyes some, the reason the whole 2-year timeskip happened; he knew him and his friends had to get stronger.

Sanji's 2nd kick sent Vergo through the wall. You failed to show that part.
I say Vergo would have overwhelmed due to 2 things. First off Vergo was depicted from the get go as someone who was Law's superior, from the discussion when he was introduced to his conversation with Doflamingo.
Second, Law got his heart back with the instantaneous warp of his room, but even that was too slow for Vero's shave. One would think if he was fast enough the warp and manual placement of the heart back into his body would have been enough to over come Vergo's speed.
Even with the heart advantage Vergo is being depicted as a power house compared Law. The attacks that Sanji landed compared to Law were just more impressive.
Oh and Smoker is certainly powerful but has not once been depicted with the speed of Shave. As a matter of fact after switching bodies Luffy speed blitzed Smoker Tashigi and Tashigi Smoker. Smoker is no where near as fast as Vergo.
Also yes they switched bodies, but even their respective strengths were still apparent, Sanji was still able to use Blue Walk in Nami's body. If that's the case speed like Shave, another CP9 technique, probably would have been no problem in a physical fighters body like Tashigi. That is of course if Smoker cold even move that fast.
-
Sanji's 2nd kick sent Vergo through the wall. You failed to show that part.
I didn't show it because there was nothing to show. Sanji used a named attack and kicked him through the wall. He gets back up in the very next panel and brushes it off like it was nothing, literally (note how he brushes the dirt of his clothes)
!
Sending someone through a wall is impressive and always nice to see, but it still had no effect whatsoever. That was the point of the whole "iron body" business that came after. Even after being sent through a wall by a named attack from Sanji, it didn't seem to affect him. Not to speak of the fact that Sanji himself admitted that he would have lost if the fight went on.
I say Vergo would have overwhelmed due to 2 things. First off Vergo was depicted from the get go as someone who was Law's superior, from the discussion when he was introduced to his conversation with Doflamingo.
Exactly, past tense here. He also commented on how big Law became, with him being a Shichibukai and all.
Also, Oda even highlights the reason why someone like Law lost to Vergo:
!
If Vergo is such a super powerhouse who could defeat Law fair and square, why would he use his heart to begin with? Why would Oda waste a dozen panels on him playing around with his heart, if not to suggest that this is the only reason for him winning? Mind that Doflamingo told him to "make him suffer" after he already abused his heart (so that isn't the reason).
Anyway. Now, after all the hype Law got by beating Smoker, by disabling almost the whole Straw Hat crew, with even Caesar admitting that he is no match for him. Vergo is the one who could defeat him? The one who abused his heart since the very beginning? I just can't see it.
Second, Law got his heart back with the instantaneous warp of his room, but even that was too slow for Vero's shave. One would think if he was fast enough the warp and manual placement of the heart back into his body would have been enough to over come Vergo's speed.
Law was already at his physical limit at the beginning of the fight. The first panel we see shows an already fucked up Law, who seems to gather his last reserves for a room
!
Of course he isn't able to dodge a Soru in this condition.
Even with the heart advantage Vergo is being depicted as a power house compared Law.
And Law was depicted as what so far?
I admit that it was refreshing to see Mr. Perfect getting his ass kicked, but it was certainly not due to Vergo being the god people try to label him.–- Update From New Post Merge ---

Ehm, I'm not bothering to search for the panel now, but you do remember the page where Tashigi literally fell apart because she couldn't control Smoker's logia? She even cheered the one time she got one actual attack off. Not talking about Luffy himself noticing that Smoker became way too weak, stopping their clash (against Smoker in Tashigi's body)
-
The Smoker and Vergo (that better not be interrupted Oda, don't make me sad) should clarify and explain a lot of things about haki, Vergo's DF if he has one, rokushiki, and the Marines. This would be Smoker's first leap in character development…ever.
We got a tiny bit when Smoker was training with that female marine.
-
There is no way we are going to agree but my last statements are as follows…
Sanji made him bleed twice and sent him through the wall. No affect would have been like the first time Luffy tried to strike Iron Body on one of the CP9 members. Not even budging an inch and smiling afterward. Even after having his shin cracked Sanji held is own and was able to stall Vergo.
Law certainly was fighting before hand, but it is baseless to say he was at his limit before Vergo's Shave considering he was still smiling at the end of the chapter as if he was ready for more. The fact is he got his heart back but was too slow for Vergo's speed and that shows me Vergo would have the upper hand regardless. Law's extremely broken fruit was no match for that raw speed followed the by the kick. The same kicks Sanji took, got his own handicap from and still kept going with.
I get that Vergo had Laws heart, so he could toy with him if he wanted. But the brief moment Law was able to get his heart back just wasn't enough time for him to react to Vergo's brute power. Sanji just pulled off a better show with 50% of his sole weapon handicapped.
-
There is no way we are going to agree
Nope. Glady we don't have to :)
We got a tiny bit when Smoker was training with that female marine.
When was that? Which female marine? (Tashigi?)

Fairly certain this was due to the DF itself, not any real physical weakness on her part, and the fact that Smoker and Tashigi have different fighting styles and so their bodies have adapted differently. Agree with the rest of your post though.
We got a tiny bit when Smoker was training with that female marine.
Tashigi? Hina?

To the guy that said that there weren't any non-DF villains, we have Don Krieg, Captain Curo and Arlong, alongside with Hody who was already mentioned. But truth to be told we have yet to see an epic all out fight with a non-DF villain since Luffy got into the Grand Line (no Hody doesn't count). I really hope Wergo doesn't have one, but i doubt it with all this blackening on his limbs whenever he punches/kicks.
