Other as in never. Shanks and the Red Hair Pirates will likely be defeated by Teach and the Blackbeard Pirates long before Luffy ever has a chance to give his hat back.
To me, Luffy just wouldn't be Luffy with out his Strawhat. So if there's gonna be anytime where Luffy will "retire" himself as a Strawhat wearer, I believe it should be once he becomes the Pirate King! So only when Luffy becomes Pirate King will he then return the Strawhat back to Shanks.
After becoming a Yonkou shouldn't be an option.
When is Luffy considered to be a "Great Pirate"? Whenever that is, that's when they should meet.
It's weird though. Every previous straw hat wearer wasn't named after the straw hat they wore.
Who knows, Luffy/Shanks may meet under dire circumstances where Shanks ends up dying in front of him, so Luffy can't hand the strawhat back properly to Shanks, and Shanks will say something like "you became a great pirate…keep the hat".
After finding One Piece, when this massive war is supposed to break out. I'm not saying straight after, but a while after that. I could envision a scene where they would be fighting alongside each other.
Other as in just before he gets to raftel or something. I really don't see Luffy becoming a Yonkou since thanks to Law's speech it seems the SNs are looking to destroy that particular title.
When he becomes Pirate King. Roger didn't give it to Shanks until he became PK and got an awesome new hat.
When he become pirate king.
I think Shanks will die in Luffy's hands from wounds received in a battle with Black Beard.
Than Luffy will lay his body on the ground, take off his hat and place it over his bloody face.
Then he will fight against Black beard (who at this point will have at least 3 devil fruits (Yami Yami, Gura Gura, and a new one Phoenix DF, which he has taken from Marco, after killing him)
After Luffy kills Black Beard he will reach Raftel, and then he will disappear for 4 years.
So 4 years later he will return as a Pirate king and start a war against world government.
I'll have go with "other".
Luffy's obviously a significant pirate in this point of the story, but being a "great pirate" seems relative. It could happen with any one with these tasks (although when he finds One Piece is a little late, to me, for a reapperance), or something else all together.
I really want Oda to show Shanks more, period. There's so much unknown about the guy.

Why does he disappear for 4 years?
Anyway I really hope Shanks doesn't die but simply decide to let Luffy keep the hat. He's the strawhat after all.
Cool I can vote now.
Hmmm…
Because it's a plot concept that's very easy to slip in and won't disrupt the lore much, meeting Shanks after beating a Yonkou makes a ton of sense. It especially makes sense if, for some reason, the Trafalgar alliance is meant to defeat Shanks (although that's becoming decreasingly likely based off of recent plot revelations). After beating an admiral falls into that camp, too, especially since any situation in which Luffy beats an admiral would probably involve some serious stuff going down, thereby involving Shanks as a sort of peacekeeper like he was with the war.
Luffy will never become a Yonkou unless the title gets thrust upon him.
Personally, I don't think Luffy will become Pirate King because I see the parallels between him and Whitebeard as being much more accentuated in this second half of the story. It's almost as if Oda's telling us that Whitebeard's way of doing things is the "best" way, and that the only true difference between him and Luffy is that Luffy holds the will of D.
After finding One Piece?
I think Shanks is going to die at the hands of Blackbeard, so I'm going with "other": BB delivers a fatal wound to Shanks; Shanks and Luffy have their tearful goodbye where Shanks asks for his hat back; Luffy buries Shanks and goes ape on BB; Luffy comes back to the grave site.
Yeah i'm on board the Shanks is going to die before they meet train

Well I think 19-21 year old luffy is too young to be a pirate king, and also I expect admiral Coby to be his last opponent, so they both need another time skip. I'm not sure, but I think Roger also mysteriously disappeared for a few years, before becoming a pirate king.
Where will they go during those 4 years, my best guess would be on the moon.
Where does it say Coby will be Admiral level EOS?
@Formation:

Nowhere, but I expect him to become, because he said he will, the same way Luffy will become PK, and Zoro will become the best swordsman.
Also Coby is improving himself at faster rate than any other OP character.
This is current Coby

Roger disappeared after conquering Grand Line and becoming pirate king. I really think the admiral confronting Luffy has to be Akainu because of the Ace incident. Just looking at his reaction when being remember of him(while not giving a shit about Blackbeard) makes me have high expectations.

Roger gave him the hat way before that. Shanks is wearing it in all the flashbacks, including the chapter 0 one which is 2 years before Roger became the pirate king.

Hm, I'd only like the idea of an older Pirate King Luffy and Admiral Coby fighting if it was set at the very end of the series, where Oda skips ahead a decade or two to showcase the epilogue and what happened to everyone. And the two of them would fight in a more friendly situation, and it'd cut away before the first punch is landed.
Although, that's not even my ideal ending.

I really can't see Oda trolling Luffy's dream. He's all about becoming pirate king.
so basically Luffy promised to met with Shanks after the former becomes bigger pirate than later. Since Later is Yonko, they can only meet after former becomes Pirate King.
Here's a question…...aren't "becoming Pirate King" and "finding One Piece" connecting events? How can Luffy be/do one without becoming/doing the other?
What I don't really get is, if Roger used to wear that hat, why has no one ever mentioned it ? I feel like Oda just made that up after a while to hype the hat story even more.
Roger was the pirate king, news articles, bounty posters, enemies and allies. There should be plenty of images and stories of Roger with the same strawhat as Shanks AND Luffy. I mean the Navy or the world government should've picked up this link as well right. If a bloodline or even a suspicion is enough to kill babies from the PK, then I would be terrified as the WG if I saw that same hat being passed on by legendary pirates to Luffy who is also working quite hard to become one of the big shots. Besides son of Dragon and "brother" of Ace and more or less indirect Whitebeard's nephew and Shank's protege, I would make sure it's priority one to wipe him from the earth.
So when did Roger gave the hat to Shanks and more importantly WHY ? Roger has been seen wearing it when he bumped into Rayleigh. Shanks has been seen wearing it when he was just a swabie during the Edd war. So Roger gave Shanks the hat when he still was a 'nobody'. Did Roger see the same potential in Shanks as Shanks did in Luffy ?
Even Whitebeard said to Shanks when they met on the Moby Dick, where is that trademark Strawhat of yours ? Whitebeard was someone who was on good terms with Roger and have been seen drinking together. So why is it Shanks' trademark hat and not Roger's ?
That has been bothering me ever since Rayleigh had that flashback. It feels like a cheap addition in order to make the hat extra legendary, while I really hoped that Luffy was just 'another' kid and not a typical shounen 'chosen' one.
On topic, of course Shanks will never get/take his hat back, I just hope he doesn't need to die. I want Shanks to be there in the end to acknowledge Luffy as a great Pirate (King).
I think Luffy will leave his hat on Raftel, saying if you want it, i'll let you have it. Go look for it. I left it all at that place !!

From what we know I think it is the same. One by finding Roger's treasure becomes the Pirate King.

Ah, then that makes part of the poll a little redundant.

Well just tell to yourself that after finding the One Piece he we'll need some time to makes it official. Leaving a little margin between finding One Piece and becoming Pirate King.
Yeah i'm on board the Shanks is going to die before they meet train
But this theory has become so annoying, so I'm against it just out of spite, even though it's going to turn out this way. Ah well…(though I'd laugh if he's going to be taken out by Kaido or something :P)
And to be on topic: I think he already is a great pirate, after having survived so many things and overcome Ace's death...
I still think Shanks should die to Blackbeard, but, that's just me.
Isn't the thread about when will Luffy be consider a great pirate by Shanks rather than when will he get his hat? Because we are discussing the later more than the former.
I voted for "after becoming Pirate King", because I think if they were to meet, that would be the ideal time.
I do not think, however, that they will meet at all, and if they do, it will be when Shanks is about to die. Now, I don't think Shanks needs to die just because Luffy needs to keep his trademark straw hat. The reason why I think Shanks must die is because if Luffy goes against the World Government after becoming Pirate King - which he most likely will - then Shanks would definitely fight by his side. But if Luffy has a Yonkou as an ally, will it really be that much of a challenge?
I mean, Luffy will most likely (don't bash me, it's an opinion) have the Revolutionaries, Boa Hancock + the Kuja Warriors, the Samurai and the Giants (I think there is a reason as to why they aren't affiliated with the World Government), and Shirahoshi (yeah, a freaking Ancient Weapon) fighting by his side when he goes against the Government. Does he really need a Yonkou as an ally? Wouldn't that make the fight too one-sided?
in front of one piece. luffy has to defeat shanks to become the pirate king. if there is no luffy vs shanks, i will be very mad, oda.
Nowhere, but I expect him to become, because he said he will, the same way Luffy will become PK, and Zoro will become the best swordsman.
(spoilers)

and this is coby 2-3 years ago
Coby will be just as strong as Luffy will be or stronger next time they meet. The only upperhand Luffy had pre skip was he had more experience fighting. There won't be a difference between them next time they meet.
Also Zoro becoming the best swordsman? Ummm.. no that's not happening. Do you honestly believe Zoro can live up to the legendary Ryumas reputation? **** no. Let's be realistic about Zoro and Wano Swordsman. He has no chance against an Island where they know what katanas he's using and swords/sword styles been passed down for generations.

He was was always deafeat in one shot pretime skip so there really was a huge difference between them.

Aokiji defeated Luffy easily, Mihawk defeated Zoro with a small knife but that doesn't mean that Luffy can't put up a fight against Aokiji now or Zoro against Mihawk so the same applies to Coby, I don't think Luffy will ever defeat him with one shot ever again.

I was just responding to that statement. Anyway when I see Tashigi always getting powned by everyone I wouldn't be suprise the same one shot from Luffy. Destroying a rock doesn't mean he can finally fight for real.

First off, Shanks seems to have received the hat as a child, like you said. Since WB did not know about Roger having it before Shanks, we can safely assume that Roger was not a famous pirate at that moment, especially considering that Roger was a pirate for 27 years but only conquered the Grand Line in the last three.
Btw, i hate to break it to you but Luffy was never just "another" kid, the fact that Roger had the hat before Shanks did not change that fact. Destiny, the flow of time, the needs of the era and so forth have always been a major theme of One Piece. It already started in Loguetown where the connection Roger-Luffy has been established, then came Crocus "he may be the one we are waiting for, Roger", the Will of D was introduced, Kokoro several times mentioned the similarities between Roger and Luffy and so forth. So, if you dislike the destiny thing in general, it would be perfectly legitimate but the hat scene with Roger was not the scene that changed everything.
Also, its just a regular strawhat, nothing really special…
I strongly dissagre about the destiny thing, Luffy is a guy with a strong will, and good genes XD
Also he is the main character because he will be important to the history of the world of One Piece, if he died in Alabasta then there would be no history.
For those of you that think Luffy will actually give the hat back at some point, what will his crew be called instead of the "Straw Hat Pirates?"

Do you really think that Zoro's dream will just come to nothing? Do you honestly think that after probably over 1000 chapters total any of the Strawhats will fail to accomplish their dream in the end?
I'd say before Luffy's execution..
Do you really think that Zoro's dream will just come to nothing? Do you honestly think that after probably over 1000 chapters total any of the Strawhats will fail to accomplish their dream in the end?
Zoro has to prove he can live up to Ryumas reputation in Wano. Wano Swordsman established themselves they have nothing to prove. Zoro wouldn't be in the same league as the Elites who live there. When he gets the WSS title he can go back there and actually be a real threat.
Yeah, he'll be wearing it for most of the series. Most likely, Luffy will visit Shanks' grave (we're all killing him off) near the end of the series and leave his hat there.

Lol this is golden.
Shanks is going to get killed stop living in fantasy land. I bet my account on this.

Do you really think that one of the most important subplots in the story will just be dropped because of a minor character who might be relevant in the next story arc?
After being built up for nearly 700 chapters?
