Bump! The movie was released yesterday…..anyone else see it?
analysis and plot details (spoiler) inside:
! I'll be honest. It doesn't take a lot to make me love a comedy movie. Like the jokes can be low-brow if they're not constantly low-brow. I'll gladly take some dirty humor here and there.
! And I 100%, LOVED this movie. Completely. So much I would see it again.
! The trailer didn't make a lot of things clear, which is good. The whole thing starts with Jay Baruchel going to LA to reconnect with Seth Rogen. They hang out at Seth's place, play video games, smoke a ton of weed, etc. Then Rogen suggests a party at James Franco's house, much to Jay's chagrin (his character doesn't like any of the cast, especially not Jonah)
! They're having a good time and whatnot…..neat cameos by Jason Segal, Rihanna, Kevin Hart, and others. Michael Cera plays a completely insane coked-up version of himself, which if you consider all his other mousy-type roles.....it's fucking hysterical.
! Then the shit literally hits the fan when Jay and Seth step out to head to a store.....an earthquake happens, blue lights beam up some people, the cashier is CRUSHED to death.....and LA degrades to nothing.
! The thing about this movie is that there are surprisingly a lot of "oh shit" moments. Like the sinkhole scene. Can you believe it starts off with Michael Cera screaming for his phone, then getting impaled? Cue sinkhole, everyone's scrambling….Kevin kicks Aziz into the hole....man, one guy steps on another's head and crushes it!
! So Franco/Rogen/Robinson/Hill/Baruchel all survive. They board up the house (with amusing "art" Franco keeps in his house, like a giant dick and a textual picture of Rogen's name).....divide up the rations, and spend a haunting first night together.
! Then the next morning, who wakes up in the bathtub and wastes half the food making a giant breakfast? Danny McBride, whose character I loved. Yes, I know he always plays the "rude and self-centered asshole" person in his movies, but it's a nice juxtapostion to the group that's trying to work together....and he's like "whatever".
! Cue another oh shit moment. A guy tries to get in, they all debate whether or not to do it.....dude gets beheaded! They play soccer with it trying to get it away from each other, and blood pours out when Jonah picks it up. Sounds terrible? Yes. Was I in tears? Yes.
! I'm not gonna sit down and break down every joke for you (mostly because I don't remember them all)....but the parts I thought were c_ompletely_ hiliarous? Them doing all the drugs at once and fliming Pineapple Express 2.
! Emma Watson joke happens (no she doesn't come in right away and steal their stuff)…..now they're without water. Craig risks his life to get some, but to no avail. Then the group realizes they could dig to it (it's in the basement)
! Blah blah....they kick McBride out....blah blah....Jay has a theory that the chaos outside could be the biblical end of the world....no one really believes him....they get more food.....they find something that actually proves it's end of the world....
! Then Jonah gets possessed by a demon with a on-screen dick. No, I did not make that up. I hated how the TV trailer spoiled it, and I hated how it happened to Jonah. I like him!
! Eventually they have to leave the house after failing to remove the demon.....geez, what is with these deaths?! Jonah gets burned alive.....Franco dies in the most unbelieveable way. He almost gets to Heaven, gloats, loses it, then gets devoured by McBride's legion of cannibals. (with Channing Tatum as his bitch)
! Luckily Jay, Craig, and Seth all make it to Heaven by sacrificing each other at different points to save the others from demons. Then we get the ending, an AWESOME dance scene with the Backstreet Boys.
! oh man.....
! I liked that the characters slowly realized that because they're assholes irl (McBride actually describes them all like "Jonah, you're a cunt".), they didn't get beamed up. They realize towards the end, as the group dwindles, they have to do nice to get into Heaven. It's a whole melancholic concept.
! Not that the characters are the actual actors, although they're all close. Except Hill's character. He played a super-nice version of himself (Jay's like "you know who's that nice? Serial killers"?), and I found that annoying.
! Plus they struggled to survive, almost got killed by demonic monsters....and there was even a little emotional sub-plot of Baruchel and Rogen drifting apart as friends, Jay hates what he's become, and so on.
! So from there....it wasn't just a "lol" comedy movie. Serious shit happened.
! But I was laughing nearly every second.
