Okay, so the manga section has this unique type of thread, and it's a thread I'd like to see more popularized. Just put the music you've listened to into tiers.

Have you only listened to Slipknot and Korn? Then tell us why eight sweaty dudes in masks are superior to a band whose singer sounds like he's gargling on Listerine (but it's probably goat blood or something) while he sings.

Just like the manga thread, feel free to make up your own tiers. This doesn't have to be you tier'ing everything you've heard (or like) into one list. You can come back here and post things like "2012 Tier List", "All Time Tier List", "Country Tier List", etc. Or even just put your 5, 10, 50 most recent albums into a tier list! This doesn't have to be a hit-and-run thread where you only pop in once.

      –-

2012 Album Tier List (from what I've heard, no particular order inside tiers)

Top Tier: Death Grips - The Money Store; Pepe Deluxé - Queen of the Wave; Swans - The Seer; of Montreal - Daughter of Cloud; Purity Ring - Shrines (fucking beautiful music); Susanne Sundfør - The Silicone Veil; Kendrick Lamar - Good Kid, m.A.A.d City

      High Tier: Crystal Castles - (III); Metric - Synthetica; iamamwhoami - Kin; Fiona Apple - The Idler Wheel Is Wiser Than the Driver of the Screw and Whipping Cords Will Serve You More Than Ropes Will Ever Do; Animal Collective - Centipede Hz; Scott Walker - Bish Bosch (I liked the uniqueness but found it mostly grating, but at times it really clicked); Beach House - Bloom;

Mid Tier: Snowblink - Inner Classics; Grizzly Bear - Shields; Frank Ocean - Channel Orange; ∆ - An Awesome Wave; Carly Rae Jepsen - Kiss

Low Tier: Young Guns - Bones; In This Moment - Blood (the first track is so trashy and lame); Ke$ha - Warrior

I would love to appreciate Bish Bosch more if someone could tell me just how to go approaching that album.

Haha, Korn and goat blood. I haven't listened to too much stuff this year, and I liked all of it so I couldn't really put them into tiers.

Edit: Although maybe I'll do something for bands I've recently discovered

God tier: Murder by Death, mewithoutYou, St Vincent, Fine Folk, Thinking Plague, Chryst
Top tier: Bill Gould, Elephant Revival, Dragged into Sunlight, Fear Before the March of Flames, Daughters, Bodychoke, Car Bomb
Mid Tier: Fockstrot, Sol Invictus, Dark Dark Dark, Gogol Bordello
        Low Tier: Giles Corey

Need more listens tier: Discordance Axis, Ebonylake, Listener, Stagnant Waters, Brainbombs

Great thread. I hope it does not have the potential to end up like that godawful "tiers of manga" thread, where personal opinion is often mistaken for who has the most perfectly crafted and largest e-dick. Instead I'm hoping it gives me some ideas for what I could listen to depending on an individual's taste.

oh i thought of something from this rpgjay discussion recently that I guess fits into this thread, cuz otherwise i can't think of anything to type. this subject matter is usually excessively tedious or boring when people try to talk about ARTIST INFLUENCE, so it's fun sometimes to actually step back a minute and examine what one actually enjoys in this area:

Dad Rock Bands that I like/Popular Bands That Would Show Up On Classic Rock Radio Format If You Listened for 10 Minutes Also I Will Include Some Prog-Rock Bands Because That Is Also Kind Of a Staple I think?:

Top Tier: Bruce Springsteen, Neil Young, Grateful Dead, the Beach Boys, Frank Zappa stuff so I guess the Mothers of Invention specifically

High Tier: Steely Dan, the Rolling Stones, Velvet Underground, the Jimi Hendrix Experience, The Who

Lil' Lower But Still High Enuff: Genesis, Rush, Queen, The Kinks

Mid Tier: Led Zeppelin, Bob Dylan, AC/DC, King Crimson, Janis Joplin, Cream

                    Super Low Tier: The Eagles

As this is actually a topic that I consider myself an expert in, you and me should have a LOOONG conversation about this.

Your list is so fundamentally flawed, my god, disagreements all over the damn place.

ROFL, you put The Beatles and The Doors in "low tier", do you realize that this is a punishable offense on the face of it?

Personally I really like that topic. It serves the same function as a thread like this would, in my opinion. I didn't read all of it, but mostly all I saw was people putting things into tiers. Though there WERE people who got lynched for putting manga in certain tiers. Is that what you're referring to as its crappiness?

Holy, I'm sorry, but I have to agree with Crys here. The Doors is pretty forgettable, yes, but even though the music of The Beatles is rather boring and samey and definitely not very elaborate or even beautiful, it is still a punishable offense to list them under the "low tier" label. And we don't take any buts.

Actually, The Beatles are probably the most diverse band (over the course of their career) I've ever listened to, and their music is both elaborate and beautiful. And I have many more qualms with Holy's list, but don't worry, we handled it in a private conversation. We decided that I'm right forever, and Holy is Pirate Queen.

I'm not agreeing or disagreeing with either of you guys but there are many bands that are better than the Beatles. They may have had their place in the 60s and such but there's plenty of other music that has come out in the last few decades that could be enjoyed instead of still clinging to the Beatles. They're actually one of the first bands I started listening to (which looking around might be pretty common) but they're not even close to one of my favorite bands now. And the Doors' are pretty nice as well, their self titled album is probably my favorite.

                                                        @Sakonosolo:

I'm not agreeing or disagreeing with either of you guys but there are many bands that are better than the Beatles. They may have had their place in the 60s and such but there's plenty of other music that has come out in the last few decades that could be enjoyed instead of still clinging to the Beatles.

I'm not "clinging", I just genuinely dislike all of the music from the past two decades. Maybe there's some early 90s stuff that's okay.

Although, the fact that I don't recognize most of the bands in here, is actually a good sign. Maybe they're alright.

Actually, the implication that any music is worth listening to in this day and age, make YOU a scrub.

How the hell did this gem go by unnoticed?

I was seriously considering looking through some hip-hop albums, but only those that were released this year. I've noticed that the musics I were were listening to when I first jumped into prog rock and funk, that most of the albums were made in the 70s-80s(that and most of the prominent bands started to lose their touch a few years after their STRONG debut albums, and I would not consider myself a hardcore enough fan to remain loyal despite this) and I got the idea that it was probably going to take a bit extra to work to seek out something a little more modern. You know? Just to "feel" like that genre is still alive with individuals that actively enjoy them.

Late Registration is definitely my favorite rap album of all time, one of my three favorite albums period. It's clearly not objective, besides the fact that I am of the opinion that it would be impossible, I missed a lot of rap in my younger days and had no desire to listen to anything that wasn't "relatable." I'm over that now and I try to buy a new album every time I get a chance to go to the record store. Any suggestions on new stuff to listen to, hit me up.

Agreed, I listened to a bunch of Beatles and Doors early on, but I would never consider them even in my 20 favorite bands.

To Bucephalus- Just wondering, what did you think of the xx's new album compared to their other stuff? I thought it was a good album, but it wasn't great all the way through. And I've never heard of Lotus Plaza, are they worth listening to?
