I just love Dragon Age so much that I have to keep hoping they'll make more and they won't suck.
EA SUCKS but so does Bioware Thread
-
-
I'm still disappointed that Varric novel turned out to basically just be the excerpts we already had in-game.
-
They could write another novel or two to keep the fans hooked while they work on the next game.
Hell, one Alistair or Cullen novel would have the fangirls squealing in joy.
-
Mass Effect 5? That's nice. I'll just keep playing Warframe.
Bioware just really really lost me. I'm the guy that actually liked DA2 and ME3 and they still managed to lose me by screwing me on the DLC on DA:I and then Andromeda being hot garbage and it'll have been a solid decade since DA3 before DA4 comes out. Everyone that was involved with the good ol days has left so I won't get excited till oe of the games coems out with positive reviews.
Curious, what DLC are you referring to? The trespasser?
-
Curious, what DLC are you referring to? The trespasser?
If you played on PS3, they released the first DLC, but they didn't release the other two, which included the ending of the game. So sure, Tresspasser if that's what the third one is called.
(They also didn't update the multiplayer with the final characters… but the multiplayer sucked anyway.)
Like, I paid pre-order deluxe edition price to support the game and bought the first dlc and then they just said "Screw you." Really pissed me off.
I eventually watched the ending on youtube but come on. I understand console generation split meant most of your audience was somewhere else but that was a real ass move and the first burn they got in my support. Andromeda sucking finished the job.
Then I played the demo for Anthem and was "whelp, guess I'm done with these guys forever."
Shame cause I love the ME and DA worlds but...
-
Oh right, I remember that bs. There was a lot of uproar over that. I had a lot of gripes about the boring open world and the watered down tactics but I loved the world and the lore. I don't expect much from DA 4 but it is the hope that kills you.
-
The studio head of BioWare and executive producer of Dragon Age 4 have both abruptly resigned
EA has announced that Casey Hudson, the general manager of BioWare, and Mark Darrah, the executive producer on the upcoming Dragon Age, will be departing the company. All currently ongoing projects, including Anthem Next, the next Dragon Age, and the Mass Effect: The Legendary Edition remasters among them, will continue as planned despite the leadership shifts.
Hudson has been at Bioware for 20 years. I have to assume EA is asking for some really stupid shit.
I think at this point no one who was involved with the story or character stuff in the old DA games is with the company anymore.
-
Well, that bodes ill.
-
FUCK.
On the heels of that though, we got a blog update about it trying to placate us that everything's fine:
https://blog.bioware.com/2020/12/03/a-message-from-laura-miele-chief-studios-officer-electronic-arts/?fbclid=IwAR02HXu6mGMaq_-RCoiB-Su4VsJVaxfw_Jf7cFccwo1skylvmqIWEaupk-IAnd hey look, they even dropped a DA page and an official "Dragon Age Day":
https://www.ea.com/games/dragon-age/dragon-age-day-2020?fbclid=IwAR37vziCV894nGGBAjL7aW5xbaW9WmhBrPCFCUskPRqRK30-KXY2i08MOasSeriously, wtf EA.
-
The only thing i want from them is to not fuck up the Mass Effect Remaster.
It would be nice to get a new good Dragon Age and Mass Effect game but at this point i don't have any expectations. -
I wouldn't hold on to that.
Feels bad really given Dragon Age is really close to heart. I fully expect the upcoming games to tank.
What is also interesting is how they both called it quits on the same day. That too a day before Dragon Age day as if trying to send a message. Darrah's statement also felt like forced retirement.
-
Yeah, them quitting the day before big announcement day means something went down. We may never know what, but something.
-
Eh. Any worries I've had about Dragon Age quality-wise is pretty much the same where it is between the amount of time since Inquisition & Bioware's output since then. I think I would have been more worried back in the early 2010s, but we've had a lot of good RPGs from other companies since around 2014 (not that there weren't before, but that year really marked a resurgence in CRPGs).
-
Been playing a bit of Andromeda via game pass and my basic first impression is it’s…..okay but you really tell from certain aspects such as the shallow character creation (which borders on being a feature than a bug with most of the games of last generation) and janky animations and graphical issues. That that they lowered their standards with this game.
I got my male Ryder looking like The Situation From Jersey Shore (which wasn’t intentional) because of how meh the male version of Ryder looked.
-
Well, it's a teaser:
It looks gorgeous and having Varrick narrate anything is a win (which makes me think he will at least be a character in the game if not a squad member), but it really doesn't say anything we haven't heard. But if that's Tevinter it's looking pretty sci-fi.
-
I guess they have Magitek?
-
Seriously? Look, Varric is my my favorite character in the franchise EASILY, he never once left my party in either of my playthroughs of part 2 and he kept me from using any other thieves or archers in part 3 (sorry Sera), and he's kind of become the heart of the games, but going to him again a THIRD time is a little bit lazy.
ESPECIALLY if he' s a party member again.
Morrigan, Allistair and Hawke only lightly cameo depending on your choices in the earlier games… so maybe he'll just be a guest character but giving him the first narration of the first trailer kiiiiind of indicates he'll be super important again.
That's not the reaction I'm supposed to have. Part 3 it was "My favorite character is back!" But now part 4 it's kinda.... I dunno.
I guess he's the few members from 3 that doesn't have any paths where he might end up dead or in a super important job he couldn't possibly leave, but still.
-
At this point, they might just simply be having Varric narrate the series at this point. For the most part, both teasers felt like Bioware reminding people that these are indeed games being developed. Tevinter looks pretty cool though with having somewhat of a Fantasy Cyberpunk look, so that could be a really nice setting to play in.
-
Last I heard 4 is supposed to take place mainly in Tevinter, so yeah, that would be a cool setting.

I kinda doubt he'd be a party member again, but I could easily see him being an agent or information broker-type who does a lot in the background. If nothing else, he's an awesome narrator.

Anthem Next has been canned. Bioware will focus their resources on Dragon Age and Mass Effect titles.
We all knew it was inevitable but I'm surprised it took so long. -

https://gamerant.com/anthem-like-destiny-10-year-journey/
"Anthem is a social game where you and your friends go on quests and journeys. It’s a game that we’ve been working on for almost four years now, and once we launch it next year I think it’ll be the start of a ten-year journey for us."
-
I don’t get it they canned the do-over but going to keep the original version that almost no one likes?
-

it costs them almost nothing to keep it going and making money off the ones still playing it until they shut the servers down in a year or two.
To take a second stab at it and pull a full FF14 Reallm Reborn on it would take a lot of time, money and resources and wouldn't necessarily pay off at all. Anthem doesn't have the sheer name behind it that a numbered FF does..

Oh make no mistake I know full well the reasons why they cancelled the update my thing is why keep the servers up and running instead of shutting them down like Evolve or Battleborn can’t be that many hanger-one left playing the game.
-
GOOD. Nobody cares about Anthem anyway.
I thought the flying was pretty cool and it had potential.
As it was released it was terrible but it had potential if they'd kept reiterating on it.

It just went onto the new Xbox and PS5, so there is in fact a playerbase that in theory have no other games to play that's only been mucking with it since like December. Its why they waited so long to officially announce the cancel even though they made their decision two weeks ago.
Assuming you ignore the full backward compatibility of the current consoles or the fact no one has them…

It was previously (as we all knew) a live service game. Some positive news surely.

If it’s as glitchy and linear as Fallen Order…...

I truly hope the next Drago Age game will actually keep its main plot going forward rather than dump it like the Mages vs Templars war in DA:I.
Bioware really has a hard time handling plot threads and an even worse time with characters. So here's hoping you know who is not done dirty.

The Mages vs Templars thread was originally intended to be mostly worked into an expansion for DAII, but ended up getting integrated more into DA:I. They've had Solas at pretty much the front of the marketing. That said, it'll almost be a decade by the time DA4 releases in comparison to DA:I, so they can't really expect too many people to remember the details of DA:I. Of course, the advantage of having a new protagonist for every entry is you always start from a fresh perspective whether plot threads or characters are continued.
-
I can't wait for the Jason Schreier post-mortem of DA4 that ends up being another illustration of how Bioware was always a mess of a company.
-
Even if DA4 manages to be amazing, it'll still be a full decade removed from the previous game. The investment just isn't there anymore.
Same for if the next Game of Thones or Kingkiller Chronicle ever releases.
-
@Cyan:

Does that come before or after the Mass Effect 4 Post Mortem you mention back in November?

I know I'll be waiting forever for them to conclude the Telltale GoT story which ended on a rather vicious cliffhanger and potentially having to weave the remaining seasons into it's narrative including the clusterfuck of the last season.
-

The DA4 and ME4 post-mortems are going to look very similar I reckon.
-
Well I would think that depends on how middling or terrible one or both are.
-
The Mages vs Templars thread was originally intended to be mostly worked into an expansion for DAII, but ended up getting integrated more into DA:I.
Which was bad giving the scope of how much it should have effected the world. Both sides have valid pros and cons and they were reduced to…. nothing.
They've had Solas at pretty much the front of the marketing.
Choices matters used to be part of their marketing so it's hard to trust the.
That said, it'll almost be a decade by the time DA4 releases in comparison to DA:I, so they can't really expect too many people to remember the details of DA:I.
If that's the excuse that gets used when they write away Solas an hour in and start retconing things again instead ofdoing the actual interesting plot then DA4 will probably be another successful failure.
Of course, the advantage of having a new protagonist for every entry is you always start from a fresh perspective whether plot threads or characters are continued.
Yeah but here it's not going to work well in this case. We won't have an emotional tie to Solas when they get rid of him in the first hour. Unless the last game's main character shows up a lot to help us connect again to the plot. But asking for the bare minimum is usually way too much from Bioware so we'll see.
-
If that's a Tevinter mage, then Tevinter is damn cool:

Huh, so that's what all of Thedas could be if they weren't such dicks to magic.

Someone stole the Frostbite game engine source code from EA, which means it may be possible to mod just about ever EA game from any EA studio any which way you'd like.
https://www.cnn.com/2021/06/10/tech/electronic-arts-hack/index.html
Maybe don't put all your eggs in one basket like that.
If you're unaware, EA laid down a studio-wide mandate that every game needed to be done in Frostbite. Frostbite was created for a first person shooter game and lacked dozens of tools necessary to create every other genre of game. But EA owned Frostbite, so no royalties.
Frostbite was… not good for rpgs and sports games. Part of the reason Andromeda was such a mess.
-

To be fair whatever the engines BioWare RPG’s have run on, have been not good.
-
Man… i accidently clicked on the "back 10 pages button" for this thread and saw some old posts from years ago. There was a timem we were hopeful Dragon Age 4 "could be as soon as late 2019!"
Sigh.
–- Update From New Post Merge ---
To be fair whatever the engines BioWare RPG’s have run on, have been not good.
Kotor, Dragon Age 1 and 2, Mass Effect trilogy were all solid. A bit creaky by todays standards maybe but they were plenty good at the time.

Can someone make a mod where Sera isn't such an annoying, unlikeable lout to an Elf Inquisitor who is actually proud of their heritage then?

Damn. If we go by what that article says, it sounds like the hackers are all FIFA fans.

@Johnny:

Sera was one of the best characters in Inquisition. Her hating typical elf stuff was fun. She would have been in my party all the time if Verric wasn't an auto-include. And she was in the group a lot my second run through.
You want someone that's all about traditional elf stuff you got for Solas. Who was kind of an asshole about it.

Well, my issue is that if you're even like "Yes, I am proud to be a Dalish, but I respect other cultures", she's all like "UGHHHHHHHHHHH, Typical Elfy Elf Oppressor!". She's a total hypocrite, and a womanchild about it, as well.
It's even worse that, when you learn about the Well as an other race, she says she can agree to disagree about what you discovered….unless you're a Dalish Elf.
-
I wouldn't know, I never played an elf. They kind of suck.
-
I wouldn't know, I never played an elf. They kind of suck.
Playing as a human, especially in Inquisition, is too basic and plain. Qunari is a neat option, but having to use the facepaint thing instead of helmets sucks. I liked both Dwarf options in Origins, but the Inquisition one….dunno, this one just didn't do much for me.
But then, my go-to people in ES are Khajiit, so maybe I just like to be exotic.
-
I play Qunari my first time and Swarf my second.
Will never do elves. Hated them in Origins, (always sided with the werewolves) hated them in 2. Fenris was intollerable and Merrill was… Merrill. I managed to like Meryl on my second run when I did my evil power hungry bloodmage playthrough, but that she's only tolerable in the evil playthrough is something.
Solas... is boring and leaves you halfway through the game. Then comes back only to betray and leave you again and turn out to be the asshole responsible for the whole thing.
Sera is the first elf I actually liked and well... she doesn't act like an elf.
...Zevran was okay but he'd betray you at the drop of a hat if you didn't have absolute full loyalty.
-
Even before I really got into finishing all three games during the pandemic, I knew Solas was up to no good the second I saw him. Interesting storytelling and all, and I actually quite liked him as a character, but it was so obvious he was more then just a simple hermit who just happened to be at the Big, Important Meeting.
Also, for the next game, I'm wondering if that whole angle with the Architect and the sentient Darkspawn is finally coming back. Maybe even one as a companion? That would be interesting!
