What's with the POP market collapse? After a decade, people have decided they just don't like POPs anymore? I doubt any compaby is ever going to make better figures of Shirahoshi, Blackbeard, and so forth… I just don't get it. Do people not love One Piece anymore?

Over saturation and high costs. POPs used to be aimed primarily at collectors, since they rarely ever did re-releases 3 or 4 years ago. Now, they release a large amount (at high prices) and have two or three runs with re-releases. Some would also question which figures they're making. Space may also be a reason (too many figures with no space to keep old ones). For me, I sold 100 POPs about 3 years ago, so I got out in time (and even then ended up barely making a profit). My advice for buyers now would be to wait until new figures hit, scour mandarake afterwards, and then buy when they're cheapest. Or, just wait for the inevitable re-release if it's a popular character.
-
^^ Very true. There's still the odd limited release that you're never quite sure how popular it will be…........look at Bartolomeo now selling for 25K having retailed for 9k.............but i'm sure it won't be long before Megahouse run another "vote" for which LIMITED figures needs a re-release..............
I think the love for OP is still there, and the true collectors are still grabbing them, but a lot more of us are being more selective and biding our time.........
There's so much choice now that it's not practical to want every single POP! People are just buying the figures they want. In addition, the fear of missing out now has gone...........long gone are the days of camping out to get your pre-order on day one and commiserating your fellow collectors that missed out and would have to pay top dollar on release.........
All the excitement, camaraderie, obsession has gone..........Megahouse over inflated their bubble and it burst! lol
-
Well in my case, I just decided that I didn't want to continue collecting One Piece figures anymore. The love for the series is still there, but I figured that didn't mean having to buy figures of characters from the series etc. It's getting more expensive now, they're getting cheaper to get on the second hand market (hence no real need for PO) and I've pretty much moved on to other priorities, so yea.
I do miss the days of the PO wars though, that was good while it lasted. Right now these feel more like they're marketed towards the average collector rather than the die-hard fan who would go the extra mile to purchase these figures, just look at how Manda seems to be the main outlet for POPs nowadays and you'll kinda understand where I'm coming from, hopefully. Not saying that there aren't die-hard One Piece fans out there, but this whole thing with Megahouse seems to have made the collecting business alot less pleasant than it used to be.
I for one wouldn't even mind selling my remaining POPs at retail prices, but hey, even that's difficult to do now. And the only reason I can come up with (besides the falling yen rate) is that Megahouse gives no shits whatsoever about "Limited" and "re-run", to them it just feels like, the more the merrier, and labels can just go bite the dust. It's annoying.

Isn't Nami mugiwara ver 2 supposed to be out by now?

Isn't Nami mugiwara ver 2 supposed to be out by now?
Depends where you purchased her from. She's out in Japan and most other Asian countries already, but American based webshops like myself probably won't start get them in until this upcoming week, most likely.
-
The good old times of reselling POP for twice the price has ended. Now its worth half the price.
-
Know where I can find POP Moriah for half the price?! ^__^;;;
-
Yeah, I knew it'd be tough, but I didn't know that it was really this bad. Especially when the ones I do want to buy are still above retail. Maybe eBay would be the best way. I really do miss the days of PO wars. I remember getting up around 5am to prep for that preorder! Haha

Ha! I'd had my alarm set for like 3AM and F5'ed the hell out of hobbysearch, amiami, and otacute. Had one window open on this site and the others on the figure sites. I never once missed a preorder even after 3 years. Oh well. Times change. Now I just focus on WCFs and I'm content to keep doing that.

Oh the good old days where we had to get up at 3 am to preorder, lol

Hahaha! That's exactly want I'm talking about! Those PO wars used to bring us guys together…..and when someone wasn't going to make a PO, one of us would help out by snagging them another one at the same time!
Good memories!! This place used to be buzzing! Thats what made me fall in love with collecting, and it's those memories that my figures rekindle when I look at them! That's why I can't just sell them all!
-
Guys, can you buy the DXF Brotherhood in block or you have to buy the 3 pieces as stand alone?
Thanks -
Guys, can you buy the DXF Brotherhood in block or you have to buy the 3 pieces as stand alone?
ThanksAre you talking about the one with Sabo/luffy/Ace? you can buy the set of 3 on Big in Japan, or wait for HLJ to list them but they do separately so you have to be quick to get them altogether.

Was reading the last few pages of the thread . . . apparently the market has tanked while I've been away? >.<
Heh, I was packing stuff up to move, and thinking how I've just got TOO MUCH STUFF, and considering selling some of it. But, yeah, I'm not sure. I've got the crew's Strong World POPs and the new world Figurarts (crew only) that I was debating. It's just that the boxes take up so much room. And frankly, if I decided to sell, I'd want to sell them all, not figures here and there. Don't want to sell the popular ones and end up with Franky left.

It's really hard to sell these days, i myself try to sell figures but people don't even consider giving proper price (not selling one piece related is also a problematic) but since 2013 i think POP stopped becoming cool enough to pay the price for them, and re-release officially put an end to the POP PO war we once knew.
If you ever wanna sell better try people near you, at least people can be interest in them if there is no expensive shippingI was thinking btw do you guys think Law 2.5 will raise in price after release?
and for how much MArco MAS and Mihawk V2 are going for these days? -
Marco MAS is still in stock at HLJ, if that gives you any indication of his demand.
-
@Miyuki:
and for how much MArco MAS and Mihawk V2 are going for these days?
Looking at manda, 7000 opened and 8500 unopened/opened(?) respectively. Mihawk rose in price even after rerelease.
-

I think the reason is his shipping, i've checked few places and his price is close the the retail but no taker because of the shipping EMS only which raise the price and add the custom tax
Looking at manda, 7000 opened and 8500 unopened/opened(?) respectively. Mihawk rose in price even after rerelease.
That is exactly what i thought by seeing price, Mihawk price didn't dropped at all
Anyway thanks both of you!
-
Yeah, at this point, their prices are soo low and the yen is soo weak that if you want to sell fast you need to undercut the Mandarake prices severely…................
Follow this link: http://ekizo.mandarake.co.jp/shop/en/search.do?searchStrategy=keyword&action=keyword&doujin=all&keyword=pop find the price the last 2/3 POP's your trying to sell sold for (not ones that are still available) and then either offer it for 20% less or include free international shipping…..........either way, i'd be very surprised if you can sell it for enough to cover the cost of shipping lol, let alone break even!! haha
Like Keith said "good luck", you'll need it!! Seeing POP's selling for $10-$20 now........it's insane!!
Where do you see them selling for $10????
-
Where do you see them selling for $10????
Sorry for the confusion….I meant £10-20.....since there are so many going for 2000-4000 yen now.....and the yen rate is 200 yen to the pound now......
-
Ouch, yeah.
I very carefully reboxed all of my figures and was looking for bigger boxes to transport them in. I spied a nice big box, but it was heavy. Opened it up, and found an unopened POP Zoro Sailing again and GEM Shiroyasha. >>
So, yeah, apparently I'm not as into the whole collecting scene as I was. I do still want to get a nice display case and decide.
Maybe if someone buys them before I get them displayed again, that will be that.
WARNING: NOT TAX ADVICE
On a very odd side-note for US collectors, apparently you might be able to claim a capital loss deduction on your income taxes for collectibles. Maybe. I would have to look into it more; I just saw something for capital gains reporting. IRS specifically lists coins and art as examples.

Well, the spirit here is kinda low latelly….
! POPs are not what they use to be, but neither is the One Piece scene. When I started collecting, there was only the POPs to look forward (in terms of scaled figures). FAZ and GLM were iniciating, and IK was merelly a concept. So I was willing to do preorder wars for them, because that was basically the only chance I had.
! Now I feel that with the multiple rereleases, redoes, second versions and lines, there's plenty to choose from. So I started to wonder, how many figures of the same characters do I need? What does the new one offer that the old one was missing? Is this one the best? Do I need a 7k POP of that character or a 3k FAZ/IK will do me enough? And so on…
! Megahouse figure choices didn't help them at all, and surprisingly I found myself skipping POPs more often than not. I still love the line, but I just can't care enough about the bunch of 2nd versions and Dresrossa characters (I didn't conect with the arc at all) they are throwing at us.
! I got tired of waiting for MH to step up the game, and started digging the other lines and options more. I had no troubles settling with "lower" figures of the characters I didn't love enough to want the POP of, but still wanted a figure of. And I found myself searching the nets for custom figures of characters I really want a POP of but I'm affraid will never have.So maybe this will make someone happy. Corazon IK!!

Yeah, One Piece figure isn't limited to POP line only.
I still find myself happy getting King of Artist Luffy and the latest Scultures. They are really great values for money. I'm looking forward to the upcoming King of Artist Luffy variant color, GLM Sabo, GLM Corazon, GLM Whitebeard and MSP Shanks.
I also think that the One Piece series is declining in term of the enthusiasm. You could see fewer posts in this forum for the last year. People are moving on to other series or other hobbies. I think figure companies shall be smarter in handling OP series. You can't rehash the same character over and over again. They are doing it for Law atm and I'm sure it will reach the saturated phase soon.!

I agree on what you said, the enthusiasm isn't there anymore, at least for the non japanese fans, mostly because of other titles i think, or may be because one piece is a long run serie and this one is on the stable/low slope?
For a year or so i stopped buying one piece stuff which is my main fandom, then i came back to one piece because the other fandom were just a phase, now i am careful with the shows i'm getting into and may be it's the same for people?
i don't know, and there is Megahouse and their schemes, their prices, and the endless version of Law in a time span of 2 years, i can understand that the motivation goes away.
Megahouse skipped punk hazard to jump on dressrosa and so tons of merchandise! -
It's just, there's SO MUCH merchandise to collect, and with the flagship figure line (POP) just pumping figures out based on what they think will be popular and constantly releasing "versions" recurringly of the same characters (i.e. Law, Nami, Ace, etc) I dunno, I just don't see the need to even collect them anymore. Like, if I see a nice one I'll still want it (That Mihawk 2, Aokiji Z, 10th anniv Ace etc.) but the urgency just isn't there anymore, and the market is oversaturated with OP figs as it is. Preorders are a joke now, and you don't even need to preorder really, just wait until release and find the figure pretty much anywhere. It also doesn't help that we've been in the Dressrosa arc for like what… a year or more? It's just stagnant at the moment, it needs that jolt to bring it back to the forefront
-
Yeah…...tbh my initial passion for figure collecting came from articulated figures like Revoltech and Figma, I never really got into PVC fixed posed figures until later.
I skipped the first wave of POP's, but it was the Battle of MarineFord that got everyone excited for them I think....When I first saw that Newgate, Luffy & Ace that blew me away!! They continued to get exciting with the Shichibukai, Admirals and then the Sailing Again Mugiwara's.................but then once Megahouse took the piss with Franky I think it was the curtain call.......I think it's been downhill since then............once everyone had the full crew they were done collecting.......
The series itself has struggled as well, it lost a lot of momentum following the timeskip, and I don't think it's quite picked itself back up again yet......Fishman Island, PH and Dressrosa arcs have been fairly meh imho........although they've had their moments......
Looking forward to seeing what happens to the Dream9 line-up once Dragon Ball Kai finishes airing. The One Piece anime has always had another show accompanying it for the past 5 years with Kai and Toriko..........I wonder if anything new is around the corner?
Also bear in mind DB and Kinnikuman have made a massive comeback over the past 12 months with Megahouse doing lines for both series, so OP has some serious old school competition!!
Now they need to do a new Hokuto No Ken (Fist of the North Star) series!!! hahaha!!
-
Why anyone would want a Sentomaru figure is beyond me.
-
Personally I have absolutely little to no hype for any of the One Piece lines. But its coming down to character choices. I refuse to pay money for the likes of Law or Sabo. And most of the characters upcoming are ones I either care little about or already have plenty of other releases. I'd love to see some new and interesting lines but by the time it comes to the characters I would pay good money for (Robin, Chopper etc.) it would be wave 2 or 3. If that. Its also became increasingly difficult to get any of the new lines I find too. The 'I WANNA LIVE!' set and recent WCF have came and went yet dont seem to be anywhere. So what do I say to a line where the only figures coming out are characters I don't care about and the only figures I can actually buy are characters I don't care about? I DONT CARE ABOUT IT!
-
So maybe this will make someone happy. Corazon IK!!
Burnable fluffy coat is here! PFFFFFFF that Law concept illustration. Hey, stop trying to take Sanji's cool-suit schtick! Trying to appeal to those with disposable income! shakes fist

I think Megahouse and lots of figure companies forgot what makes collecting figures a rewarding hobby: the rarity.
The hunting of rare figures and increasing price of 2nd hand figure because they're not being re-released were the things that created the pre-order war. Figure companies try to seize the profit of 2nd hand market trading by re-releasing figures without realizing that move might backfire. Imagine that you own a 30,000 JPY worth POP Bellemere figure that you bought ten years ago and suddenly Megahouse decide to release it this year! How come won't you lose interest in collecting POP?
The 2nd hand market existence is a must for a collecting hobby (for anything). Cards, comic become rare and increasing in value over time because of it's limited availability and non-existence of re-release. These figure companies are too greedy trying to seize that profits belong to figure collectors and in the end that move backfires.
No wonder the 2nd hand POP prices at Mandarake are not as high as two to three years ago.Yeah…...tbh my initial passion for figure collecting came from articulated figures like Revoltech and Figma, I never really got into PVC fixed posed figures until later.

DB did make a massive comeback. And Banpresto are releasing great figures along with it. Really love their Scultures DB line.
I really like the FI arc, Dressrosa and PH not so much. A shame that we would never get a Hody Jones or Fisher Tiger POP. Dressrosa is dragging on the series too long killing the enthusiasm. Oda focusing too much on Law, yet he had to show SHP crew strength. Lack of focus killed this arc for me. I'm still waiting for the surprise and twist in the final fight but seriously Dofla is kinda boring now. Corazon is definitely cool though. -
All I buy now is Banpresto figs, I've been very happy with them. Its been awhile since I bought a POP or even a FAZ. The new Zoro is the onyl POP Ive pre-ordered in atleast 6 months or bought even. There really hasn't been anything Ive been interested in though. I am buying some of the Mild kids re-realeses actually.

I hear ya…...I loved the Corrida Colosseum, so couldn't pass on Bellamy, Rebecca, Cabbage and Chicken-kun. Also the (very brief) clash between Fujitora & Sabo was entertaining, so I got Fuji and will most likely pickup Sabo, but after that I can't actually think of any others characters I would want............
Even my interest in getting Caesar Clown and Kin'emon have faded.............along with Buggy and Magellan........
Expecting that MH Expo will be on the 30th May, so going to give them once last chance to redeem themselves with something special in 71 days......

Yeah, Punk Hazard had alot of characters I liked, Monet, Baby 5, Vergo, Kinemon, Ceasar and yet all we got was Law and Momo. Atleast Faz made some but the best Monet item out there is the stylings which is sad. Really no one from Dressrosa peaked my interest and yet lots of POPs and merch. Rebecca is the only one and that is mainly for the oppai. I forgot about her POP, had no money when she came out but have had no real drive to pick her up since.
Once you have a couple male and female POPs you have experienced everything the line has to offer. For me its become repetitive, just not feeling the sculpts and all anymore. Personally I feel like the line is quite far down the list in terms of other companies and lines. Rather lack luster in comparison.

Yeah! I'm sure Rebecca will get a re-release announcement very soon! Especially seeing how much she's going for pre-owned at amiami!!

I must admit, they have made some odd choices lately (even if Lao G did grow on me as the manga went on).
What irritated me no end, was they sculpted a really good Nami face and put it on the mugiwara version 2. Hopefully one day Nami will get another release with a face of the same quality down the line.
For now, I am just focusing on getting the POP Milds, with Sabo and Koala later on this year. If I have the money, maybe Bon Clay, as I loved him in the Impel Down arc. Other than that, unless the next expo (when is that btw?) showcases something awesome, that will be all I am interested in this year. A Corazon and POP Mild Law would be great, I would even consider Sai as I like the design.
A part of me is also glad I left the Grandline series when I did, as they made numerous questionable choices too. The GLM/GLL wasted their time with the 15th Anniversary line, GLC flip/flopped over what line they wanted to do (CP9 still unfinished), GLV (only doing one part of the General Franky), GLT (WTF?), GLS (Two ships?!?).
-
I think figure makers give a focus on certain characters because of the hype, since the announcement of Sabo we have so many Sabo announced and released, he satured the market as fast as Law did after PH arc.
And frankly i'm done with Sabo already, aside of getting Ace fruit he did nothing great (yet i don't know) i am not even a fan and now putting him in every goods form just not push me to like him more, if only they give various pther characters that are important, i think Baggy needs some love even if he didn't appeared since then but they should just stop focus on one or two characters.
As for the story wise, i felt a lot of down in dressrosa arc, and there is so much to say i feel like we aren't advancing a bit.

He was part of Whitebeard fleet, he surely did a lot before fighting blackbeard which leads the marineford battle, his death for being the son of Gol D Roger has a deep meaning in itself, when Sabo got rescued and then appear out of the blue with strong haki and so what? what he did of absolutely awesome to deserve all that treatment? hype.

It's not that I disagree with you or think Ace is lame. I just wanted to show that it's all a personal matter whether you like characters or not. We sure know a lot about Ace, but we haven't seen that much about him. In fact we saw him so rarely that all his figures share the same clothing and positions. That doesn't prevent me from liking him a lot and buying most of them. The difference between Sabo and Ace is that people never expected anything from Ace and were taken by surprise (He's Roger's son, Whitebeard's fleet commander, and so on, oh wait, no, that's it), whereas for Sabo, we all knew he was not dead and probably raised by Dragon. So we all had huge expectations now about him (when he would show up again, what he would look like, his powers, the truth about Luffy's father, why he didn't come sooner, his new friends, etc) and I think it's just easier to get disappointed in such situations.
In the end we all dreamed to have a figure of Sabo, and now that we can get many, its value seems not as big as we'd wanted or dreamed it'd be. But I trust Oda that we will all like him soon! -
It's not that I disagree with you or think Ace is lame. I just wanted to show that it's all a personal matter whether you like characters or not. We sure know a lot about Ace, but we haven't seen that much about him. In fact we saw him so rarely that all his figures share the same clothing and positions. That doesn't prevent me from liking him a lot and buying most of them. It happened with Law too, at first we got few stuff here and there then they saw the hype around him and didn't stop releasing many Law's, i'm not telling that Sabo sucks, i'm just telling it's ruining the character chance by flooding market with his figures and items. -
From my point of view :
I stopped caring about POP value long ago when they re-released Garp ver. 0
At this point, i had to decide : am i collecting figures to sell them someday and make a profit or i just like One Piece as a whole masterpiece and i love having one piece stuff under glass ?
I choosed the second option, i'm probably like Star Wars fans, it never really leave you.
I'm not long away from one off my dreams, a big house with a "play room" decorated with all my One Pieve stuff.
Maybe it will worth something someday again but i'll let my kids decide that in 20 or 30 years or more if life leave me more time but i don't really care ^^Some people buy new cars or clothes or do fiesta for insane amounts of money, i'm not into that stuff so i can deal with the money dedicated to my collection. I mean i can afford it so why not ?
I just wish to get some major character and by major, i mean guys like Magellan or Buggie not Monet and Vergo, but even these two would satisfy me at this point… I 'm seek of multiples figured of characters...For exemple, i really like the new old Zoro, i'm getting him and selling the old one if someone will want it but there is no room or love for the 2 fools Kid and his mate in my collection...
If only i could complete the Supernova, i wouldn't mind the second set as sailing again but it's not the caseAlso it seems to me, Megahouse is relasing much more limited figures, i wouldn't be surprised if POP release become limited only or almost only Limited.

Snip
I feel you, it's the same for me, i never bought POP to sell them later, i just bought those that i wanna own and passed on those i don't feel like i might keep or love enough.
I noticed that Megahouse don't offer much POP that they were back in the time
Also a lot of them are under "limited" aside of those like Ace and Zoro 10th anniversary that are regular, the rest is pretty much unavailable mostly everywhere like cavendish or bartolomeo.
I'm feeling that MH wanna put this line limited and so they will control the number or just to put the POP line back to his old glory and price will raise again.
Also i think MH shall think wiser about which character to release and not just throw at us every character (like the old man of Mingo family)
If MH clean up their mess, they might give to this line a new fresh life.
They just have to pick up wisely the character they wanna make and stop the re-release of the remakes (for example the CBR line, even these lost value since their reissue and most of them are still available on order)that is really sad how it turns out -
Anyone has the new Franky Shogun WCF available at Tokyo Tower? Seems to be like Peppermint colors

Any word on the first wave of the POP Milds?

I collect what makes me happy. That is really all there is to it. It was my philosophy when I collected model horses and it's the same for my anime figures.
