I didn't say it wasn't true. I was just saying that anyone here critizing ANY animated adpation in this thread falls under the same demographic. The reason why I orignally considered the remark petty was because it was only aimed that those brining mention of the One Piece anime.
Throughout this month, we will be testing new features (like search) so you may experience some hiccups from time to time. We'll try to not be too disruptive...
Worst manga to anime adaptation
-
-
Well, seeing how people consider deviations,be it tonal shifts, story changes or whatever,to be a sign of a bad adaptation,a little question has been bugging me lately…
...does that make Ghost in the Shell anime,Oshii's movies and Stand Alone Complex, bad adaptations?
-
Filler can be good. Stretching episodes to fit chapters is just asking for trouble.
Also, Studio Pierrot's animation is awesome.
Studio Pierrot treated Beelzebub like shit though.
On the plus side, they took a long time to finally animate the real naruto instead of that filler one that we've been watching for years.
Seeing how they can manage/animate two naruto franchises, them having One Piece under their flag would mean a lot of quality animation. -
One Piece the past few arcs. I don't know if there is a way to get out of the contract that they have, but if it is please do it. I generally wait and watch a full arc for OP, but I wanted to see if they would fuck up the Smoker vs Law fight.. and they did. I don't understand how the best manga out there imo can be destroyed and have its soul sucked and we get this crappy adaptation. I prefer the anime when it first came out in 97 or whatever year compared to the work they do now. It was much better 15 years ago than today, pathetic. I am considering to stop watching the anime for a year or two or maybe even longer, it's the only one where I prefer manga over anime. Reading the manga and watching the anime after tends to hurt the anime experience for all animes/mangas, but this is just too unbearable.
These guys don't have a clue what they are doing. Considering the money that One Piece reels in, the best animators in the business should be working with One Piece. From the animes that I've seen the past few years, One Piece's anime is the worst, mostly because of its bullshit pacing. Oda's genius is the only saving grace on why I haven't stopped watching it full stop after the atrocity that is Fishman Island arc. I think my interpretation of adaptation is also different, as for me it's making an anime that is as good and exciting as the manga, and atm you couldn't pick a bigger difference between the manga and anime of One Piece.
-
FI was a real low point for the series. Bad animation and pacing aside, at least the anime was faithful to the source material. FI was where for some reason Toei got it into their heads to turn Hody into Lucci 2.0 and change the intent of the author and completely undermine the meaning of the arc.

And lets not forget how empty the scenes where there were supposed to be a 100 000 enemies lined up.
And then when they moved they wobbled up and down the screen in unison like if they were paper cut outs glued on the end of a stick.
But, what exactly do you mean by turning Hody into Lucci ?
-
Someone who could fight on Luffy's level, an end all be all opponent when the point was supposed to be he was nothing but a chump whom even, with all his advantages and drugs and twisted ambitions and devotions to his misguided ideal, couldn't even go the distance against Luffy (which ties into how his rage and hatred was empty and meaningless). A well written theme that Toei completely missed.

Huh, I dunno, I assumed the fight itself was kinda done close to cannon O_o
I mean Hody is a pretty boring character anyway so I may not have noticed.

Magi definitely counts now

Okay, I am definitely interested in hearing more about this
They pulled divergent end shenanigans for the season finale that fucked with Alibaba's character and the animation became laughable

In the manga Luffy used the Red Hawk on Hody while they were out in the water, then Hody crashed into the Noah and ate a few Energy Steroids to remain conscious, Luffy jumped onboard the ship… and instantly flattened Hody with his Elephant Gun, after which point Hody was not seen again before the wrap-up where he had already been detained. Compare this to how in the anime, Luffy completely stopped dead in his tracks to stare in horror at the terrifying transformation Hody underwent by taking that last dosage of Energy Steroids, before Hody started Soru-ing around the place, getting in several hits at Luffy, perfectly dodging or shrugging off all his attacks including the very same Red Hawk that nearly killed him just a few minutes earlier, and Luffy's Elephant Gun being played up as a desperate last-ditch effort as opposed to the manga's "Sheesh, he's still not down? Alright, have a building-sized fist to the head!"… And then they also made sure to show Hody getting hit repeatedly by Luffy's Elephant Gatling and being sent crashing through the ship falling unconscious down to the island while the islanders were all "YAY, HE FINALLY DEFEATED HODY FOR REAL THIS TIME!!!"... making the attack that was meant to be directed at the ship itself look like a second finisher at Hody because Luffy wasn't sure the first one wasn't quite devastating enough.
Worst. Episode. Ever.

Can I ask for a bit more detail ? Seems quite….well, unpleasant

Worst. Episode. Ever.
Did the episode devote an entire subplot to Buggy and several dozen other men pissing in a line ? No ?
Then there's no contest.

Alibaba's curse makes Isnan's voice of "Hate, haaaaaate" reverberate in his head until he succumbs and his rukh turn black, it's pretty stupid.

Wow.
That's one way to invert the entire godamn message in ONE FELL SWOOP.

^Without an objective personal opinion involved, the most amazing transition I've seen is probably K-ON.
They took a completely obscure, unknown manga and made an extremely successful anime franchise out of it. The anime far exceeded the original 4koma.In a similar note, Whisper of the Heart. Also a relatively obscure, unknown manga title that became a national sensation because freakin' Miyazaki Hayao decided to make a theatrical animated film based on it. I read the notes from the author (in the tankoubon) on how astonished she was when she first heard the news. She first didn't believe it, and thought her editor was pulling a prank on her. Lol.
Of course I'm basing these on measure of success (which can be gauged objectively), not faithfulness of adaptation.
I didnt know It was Hayao Miyazaki who decided to make the manga a movie. The director was Yoshifumi Kondo, though.
-

Ehh, it's pretty much a Miyazaki film.
Not only was it his idea to start the project after reading the book, he handled multiple roles:- Production Producer
- Conte / Key animation
- Script
He was involved in the production more than anyone else in the staff, lol.
There was a lot of conflict between Kondo and Miyazaki on the production, and Miyazaki forced his way to change some parts of the film.
Kondo died few years after the film, and to this day Miyazaki laments on how he regrets his actions, insinuating his arguments with Kondo may have contributed to worsening his condition. -
@Vegard:
In the manga… in the anime...
Worst. Episode. Ever.I haven't seen the anime in a while now but that reminds me of the adaptation of Whitebeard vs Blackbeard. In the manga Whitebeard saw that his devil fruit powers weren't working and immediately proceeded to slicing Blackbeard with his Glaive, showing his great combat instincts even right before his death. In the anime they made him try the earthquake like 5 times over making him look like a big old buffoon relying on his DF for power. The exact opposite of what the scene was in manga.
That was the last episode I saw btw.
-
The anime also screwed over Akainu, making him seem scared of Whitebeard.
Then there's the whole give Hody a flashback where he's actually attacked by humans thing.
-
I have to laugh every time about this filler, it´s too pathetic

dont forget bb using newgate as a punching bag.
Far worse was wb vs akainu though. Originally, Wb loses his face and doesnt give a shit. Flattens the admiral next panel. In the anime, Wb falls to his fucking knees and needs a motivational Ace flashback to get up.
-

I sort of stopped paying attention to the anime after that. I mean, I dropped at the end of ID. But I was curious to pick up for the Otohime flashback.
Way to take liberties on the story. Even though there are fans that don't really care for Hody's character, there are those that do see and even appreciate that Oda had this kind of take on blind racism. It's a shame the message was lost.I also stopped paying attention to this topic. Especially after enthusiast of the OP anime got a little petty and started comparing the attention span of western viewers to Japanese. That right wing stance never really sits well to me in any topic :T
Atleast you guys are giving honest criticism despite that. -
Slightly off-topic but what are the mangas for which you want to see an anime reboot ?
After the recent great reboot of HxH and Jojo, I think it would be great if some other mangas get the same treatment.
Either because the first one was just bad or because it ended prematurely. For me, my most wanted list would be :
- Slam Dunk : Sannoh… Crossing my fingers for its 25th anniversary in 2015.
- Neuro : 6... Unlikely but maybe with Matsui's popularity nowadays there is a better chance for that to happen.
- Eyeshield 21 : So many wrong things in the first one.
- Captain Tsubasa World Youth Hen : "J" stopped right when things were getting started. Too unlikely but a man can dream...
- Dragon Quest The Adventure Of Dai : Same as above.
-
See, I feel like I ought to want a Soul Eater and Trigun reboot, but Soul Eater was only great through the Baba Yaga's castle arc, it hasn't been that good since. and perhaps an anime could fix some of the problems? but if if's just for one arc, let's have a goddamn OVA or movie instead.
as for Trigun, I like the Manga so much (as messy as the action is) that I kinda don't feel the need to see the characters colored, moving, and with sounds.

-OMG yes. Eyeshield 21 a million times yes. They need to have the Dinosaurs match done right!
-Soul Eater I really want to see the Book of Ebon/Noah arc badly.
-I would say Sailormoon but that's already in the works.
-The Irresponsible Captain Tyler I'd like to see done again. Or finish it better.
-
Samurai Deeper Kyo. They turned everyone into demons or something, it was really weird.
Wow, this is the only one that came to my mind, thank you
Granted I haven't had a lot of manga-to-anime experiences, but this was just terrible terrible terrible. Also some random new main character with a completely out of place weapon arm in a time with, as I recall, no other cyborg/machine-type things.
-

LOL at those Dragonball Z warping sounds when Hody dodges. This is not Dragonball, Toei, please.
-
Beelzabub anime is pretty bad….there is no 'baby' Beel in it....just a regular brat...
-
I really hope they try beelzebub again. The anime was just mad completely childish and it ruined it
-
I will forgive the anime for the sole reason it spawned a deliciously awesome Umezu Ending animation.
-

I love how they forgot that Luffy wasn't getting his strength drained by the sea anymore.
-
Eyeshield 21 comes to mind. Great manga, terrible anime with downright stupid changes.
I saw those changes, but they didn't kill the experience for me personally. I liked the animation in the important parts at least was good, the openings most of the voices and the way it was done in several parts, but many changes were pretty dumb, and comentators would kinda be annoying… specially the ending of the anime was painful.
But speaking about stupid crazy endings, what about claymore and FMA:.
Also people bashing on One piece: I have to agree that the animation comes and goes, hits and misses and all that... But it's still hit and miss for me, up to ennies lobby was pretty well done IMO. After that thriller bark was bad except the battle vs oars.
And for things after that, again it's nothing special or interesting except on moments. I don't remember liking something really after Bark, but many parts were okay.Personally I dont have a vote.... really, there are some adaptations that are bad, and some endings or modifications that are AWFUL, but most of the time its bereable, or its just fine.
I have to agree though in the end Hellsing 2001 Was god painful awful.
-

Umezu ending????
Umetsu Yasuomi, one of the elite animators in the industry since the 80s.
Here's a collection of his works. Best known for Z Gundam.
He was one of the super-elite animators involved in Akira.
Pretty much everyone that worked on that film went on to become legends. -

It's Umetsu, we're only treated to his work every fucking blue moon, I really don't give a shit.
Besides, the whole ED is awesome.Look, pretty animation
Yeah, you got a problem?
I bet people can't appreciate Kobayashi's Parakiss ending either since you know OMG CHARACTER RAPE.
They give some animators with unique skills a complete freedom to do whatever they want with OP/ED, since they value their style more. Fun >>>> religious fanatics of the source bible.

I actually really like that Beel ending. And the song is insanely catchy, just like the last Brotherhood ending sung by the same chick I believe
So what's Umetsu doing now, sitting on a pile of money?
-
It is. Shokotan.
She sings the main theme song to Gurren Lagann as well. She's a big time otaku, and is a good fan artist as well.
And she's cute too.
She's like an otaku's dream wife.
So what's Umetsu doing now, sitting on a pile of money?
No clue, I wish he'd get back in the biz, and not just do an OP or ED once every few years.

For Eyeshield the changes made me stop watching. I was expecting to see Hiruma get his arm broken then make that awesome come back…But no. Sooo disappointing.
What was wrong with FMA? Or are you not talking about FMA:Brotherhood?

The 1 chapter = 1 episode pace of the One Piece anime killed it stone dead for me.
It just doesn't work, in any way, shape or form. Its such a shame, but the anime is garbage now.
I just can't watch it, no matter how much I love One Piece. -

I just can't watch it, no matter how much I love One Piece.Problem is they seem to not want to do proper filler anymore, to free up the burden and allow more freedom to the actual cannon arcs, unless it's an underwhelming movie tie-in that doesn't actualy tie-in to squat. Is it cause they think ratings will go down cause OP is now too popular and thus alot of the fans are waiting for the canon stuff ?
I realy want to see a proper filler arc, like five episodes long at least. And maybe some one offs too.

I just can't watch it, no matter how much I love One Piece. You should check out the "One Pace" project in the anime forum. It's a sort of condensed version of the post time skip arcs (and probably older arcs later) that cuts out most of the padding and filler that makes the anime unwatchable.

Funny thing is, One Piece hasn't been in the top 5 in the ratings for most of the Punk Hazard Arc. Maybe people are finally just getting tired of it.

Yep. They've just got to Caesar's reveal.. so about 35 episodes remain.
