Let's say this: you've been reading this awesome manga, the characters, plot and art style are all great and you're really enjoying it.

Then you get a brainwave you think "If this manga became a anime it would be so awesome!" You think about how great it would be to see your beloved characters moving, in colour and with voices. But then the day comes when the anime comes out and it's just awful. It's censored, it's badly paced, the voices are annoying and the scenes you enjoyed the most have translated terribly. Worst of all your beloved plot has been altered shamelessly and before you know it the manga and anime look nothing alike.

So have any of you had an experience like this? If so share it 😁
Even if it's a bad anime adaptation of any sort, for example games. For me the Devil May Cry and Disgaea anime's come to mind :getlost:

For me it was when I was reading Fairy Tail years ago as a young lad, I know now it's fallen from grace but back then I was really enjoying it. In the first 100 chapters I loved everything about it: how it was kinda like One Piece (but not as good) but with wizards, the idea of good guilds and bad guilds intrigued me, I liked how no character was completely useless (at this point Lucy was still a great character), I liked how Mystogan (Mist Gun in the translation I was reading) was so mysterious and the Guild Master Makarov was such a badass. Also the Luxus arc was something really special imo especially how after trying so hard to take over Fairy Tail he couldn't cast the Fairy Law magic. At this point Fairy Tail was bursting with potential, IMO I thought that if it continued how it was it could've ended up rivalling One Piece.

Then when the anime adaptation was announced I was hyped as hell, I literally couldn't wait. But then it came out and essentially shit on the manga that I loved. Natsu's fire effects looked cheap and terrible, magic circles came out of nowhere, the fight scenes looked cheap and punches wouldn't connect, the blood was censored (making scenes like Gray grabbing Erza's sword silly) and everyone was given really long animations before they used their magic that was recycled every episode. The worst example was erza, the whole point of her magic was that she could swap armours really quickly but in the anime they gave her a freakin' Sailor Moon transformation that lasted a good minute.

Admittedly some of the things I hated about the anime were removed in time but overall the Fairy Tail anime still leaves a bad taste in my mouth. The only note worthy thing to come out of it was it's first opening which captured the theme of Fairy Tail perfectly.

Or have you had an experience where the anime adaptation was so good that you couldn't believe it?

For the best anima adaptation I've seen how could I pick anything other than Full Metal Alchemist Brotherhood. From beginning to end the animation was great, the fight scenes were awesome and unlike in predecessor it followed the manga like it was the Bible. Which really helped because the manga was superb.

Of course another shout out to the Hunter X Hunter 2011 adaptation, the animation is gorgeous, due to it having such a huge gap from the manga the filler is minimal and the fightscenes are amazing when they happen. It truly is the best anime I'm watching right now.

I would have to say Toriko was the major disappointment for me. I thought the anime would hold true to the source…Instead we get annoying female reporter Tina, and a lot of nerfed fights. Komatsu's highly irritating TORIKO-SANNNNNNNNN!!! It got a bit better a few arcs later but some characters just didn't feel right animated. Zebra was kinda, meh for me since is face seemed to have been nerfed too.

          Flame of Recca
-The writers changed too many parts of the plot
-The animators gave up after 10 episodes

          Beelzebub was also pretty meh

I can name a few video game-to-anime adaptations that were pretty bad in regards to the source material.

The Rockman.EXE anime, adapted from the Megaman Battle Network series, was the first anime I ever watched in Japanese. It didn't cover the same plot as the games, which was fine, but it also ended up cutting out or watering down practically all of the games' backstory, and then halfway through it pretty much abandoned the ''battles in cyberspace'' premise for some weird variant of a Sentai show. By the end up pretty much barely resembled the games, or hell its early episodes, at all. It was for little kids, so it wasn't going to be Pulitzer Prize-winning material anyway, but it was quite a mess looking back on it. Though at least it did give some significant roles to characters glossed over in the games, I suppose.

It's sequel, Ryuusei no Rockman, was I guess a little better in that regard until the second half of the first season was nothing but filler, which led to the same scenario with pretty much all the back story being cut out or greatly simplified. Tribe had some pretty good production values by comparison, but the fact that it's the only anime I've ever seen end with twenty-two episodes should say something.

            ~Stargazer~, ~Distance~ original stories.

If anything, Fairy Tail follows the original story of the manga quite closely. But yeah, except for all the talk about friendship, Fairy Tail's essence is fighting and fanservice. And then they edit out all the blood (and even among shonen mangas, Fairy Tail is not gory at all, it only showcases blood at times because it is an inevitable "side effect" of hard physical fights), and censor a great deal of naked skin (Lucy, you don't wear a towel IN the bath/shower, how are you going to dry yourself then?). So it sort of loses the things that should be able to draw the viewers.

There are not many series where I've both the manga and seen the anime, so I don't really have many opinions. One Piece's anime adaptation is generally fine (a slow pacing in order to not catch up is inevitable after all these years). Dragon Ball's was also quite good (people complain about terrible pacing, but the manga also had that in the same arcs). Yu-Gi-Oh focuses a bit too much on the card game, but then, it IS the focal point in much of the manga, too.
Elfen Lied, however, is as a bit of a bad case. Ending the series before the actual plot has begun and removing the character who gave the series its name. And while it's ages ago I watched it (and read it), I remember Love Hina's anime adaptation as ranging from mediocre to terrible (I can't remember if it followed the plot closely at not, but it surely didn't present the plot in a good way).

You've forgot the worst offender: it's when the plot suffers from changes or completely deviates from the source at some point.
It happens a lot, especially to shorter series, and sometimes the manga can get barely recognizable. Another serious issue happens when they have to skip important stuff due to time restraints.

And yeah, sometimes they make up an original character that somehow ruins the whole experience, like the aforementioned Tina in Toriko.

I may be in the minority but I thought the recent Jojo anime adaptation was pretty crappy. I feel like I should really be enjoying it but it just feels like it's really low in quality

Seriously, but as a whole Eyeshield was adapted decently. It was tough to watch in between games but nothing too unbearable

Fairytail downright. It broke my heart when the magic circles appeared. Though since the manga has taken a downward plunge with super lame, overused friendship is magic themed fights. Now I don't care about the anime or the manga. I was a big fan of One Piece anime but since I started reading the manga, the animation looked lackluster and shoddy.

The One Piece anime since Marineford. The entrance to Punk Hazard is absolutely pivotal to me to the sense of adventure and danger of One Piece. If they don't consider that and act accordingly, I'm out. Basically, I'm asking for that one episode to only be half as good as an episode of the new Hunter X Hunter adaptation. My problem's not so much with the pacing (I've never seemed to care about that, but I've only ever seen One Piece at 1 chapter per episode). My problem lies mainly with the direction post-Impel Down. I thought everything before that was excellent in directing skills.

I'm not really a giant fan of the new Magi, either. Just by way of vastly preferring the manga's style. The characters seem baby-faced a lot of time, but KyoAni did that for Sword Art Online as well. Also the characters seem… limp a lot of the time. It's still great, honestly, just nowhere near the manga for me.

I have yet to see some dreadfully horrible pure evil adaptations, but heres some that I didn't like.

One Piece after Enies Lobby…I used to watch the anime episodes weekly after they were released with subs but I stopped after Enies Lobby.

Air Gear, since they didn't follow the manga...I watched it a few years ago and the failure to follow the manga got rid of my desire to watch it.

Fullmetal Alchemist...I didn't really dislike the first adaption per-say, but any anime that doesn't follow the manga kind of bugs me. Also, the ending left too many loose ends.

^Without an objective personal opinion involved, the most amazing transition I've seen is probably K-ON.
They took a completely obscure, unknown manga and made an extremely successful anime franchise out of it. The anime far exceeded the original 4koma.

In a similar note, Whisper of the Heart. Also a relatively obscure, unknown manga title that became a national sensation because freakin' Miyazaki Hayao decided to make a theatrical animated film based on it. I read the notes from the author (in the tankoubon) on how astonished she was when she first heard the news. She first didn't believe it, and thought her editor was pulling a prank on her. Lol.

Of course I'm basing these on measure of success (which can be gauged objectively), not faithfulness of adaptation.

Ao No Exorcist, Soul Eater and a lot of other adaptions with anime original ending were pretty horrible as well once they entered this territory.
And I also agree with your notion that K-On was an amazing adaption that really outperformed the manga. Hidamari Sketch is a great adaption as well as SHAFT seems to know exactly what makes the manga series so beloved by the fans and enhances it.

Mushishi was already a very interesting manga, especially due to its depth and its potential for different interpretations but what the anime did, especially the animation and the soundtrack, was simply stunning.

                                                          There are 3 for me:

                                                          1. As many people said, Eyeshield 21. Mostly from an art perspective.
The manga looks brilliant, the anime is ugly as fuck.
Seriously, it's like the anime team looked at the manga, tought either "we can't draw that well", or "we can't pull this off without a higher budget", so they decided not to try.
What strikes me the most is the changes they made, to the uniforms for example. I really love the uniform designs in the manga, especially when they're coloured, and the animators must've tought "these look too good, and would clash with how ugly we made the artstyle, so let's draw something absolutely repulsive to match it", and boom, you have the anime version of the Gunmen team's uniform, which is a complete abomination (ugh, the colours). And let's not even talk about Shinyuuji's.
Beyond that, censoring Appolo's racism, removing Musashi's return against Seibu, the horrendous voice acting…bravo, studio I don't even wanna know your name.

                                                          2. Dragon Ball.
I was 12. I had no idea what pacing and padding meant. I loved the manga. Anything could have satisfied me for "moving and coloured saiyans". And even then, I couldn't stand watching more than 2 minutes of the anime. 30 seconds in of any episode and I was already feeling like I was wasting my time, and maybe even losing braincells.
The problem is, the "slug-ish" feel TOEI gave DB seems to have become its signature. Even in movies where they don't have the same constraints as the tv show, even a simple kick still takes ten freakin' hours to land.
It's like there's no hope of ever seeing DB characters fight in dynamic, super fast fights, ever anymore, like planet destroying demi-gods should.
TOEI did some severe damage to the series.

                                                          3. One Piece.
The anime was bareable for some time. The animation was super mediocre since day one, but the lovely voice acting, and contemplative pacing made it somewhat enjoyable. Plus I always felt One Piece was meant to be anime more than a manga, and Oda should've been an animator, or at least an anime director/writer more than a mangaka, because of how lively and colourful One Piece is.
Plus Drum in anime was very strong.
But then...Skypiea. 50 episodes of torture (it's by far my favourite arc in the manga btw). Then back to quality in W7, then back to shittiness with no return since Impel Down.
To sum it up, the problems that plagued the DB anime plague the OP anime.

If I was a mangaka with a successfull manga, and TOEI was approaching me to make the anime adaptation, I'd go see an exorcist right away so those guys wouldn't come near me anymore ever. Cause yeah, there's the Toriko anime too.

Btw, can we change the thread to "Best and worst manga to anime adaptions", i think it would make it even more interesting. If you agree, i would nominate Mushishi as the best adaption i have seen so far.

That's a good idea. I've changed it to best and worst now.
I had to include Hunter X Hunter 2011 and FMA: Brotherhood as the best šŸ˜†

                                                              3. One Piece.
The anime was bareable for some time. The animation was super mediocre since day one, but the lovely voice acting, and contemplative pacing made it somewhat enjoyable. Plus I always felt One Piece was meant to be anime more than a manga, and Oda should've been an animator, or at least an anime director/writer more than a mangaka, because of how lively and colourful One Piece is.

really day one? When did you start watching? For an anime TV series in 1999 it was very good animation wise. And I'm almost sure that it stayed pretty good compared to other series animation wise for a few years after.

Weird reason that doesn't make much sense.
The skills needed for being a good director or writer do not correlate with how colourful or lively your/any work is.

I though the Death Note anime was pretty good. They succeeded in making in really moody without any of the characters really doing anything. Very often it's just colour filter and cut in's and when they spend animation money it spend for very exaggerated movement.

It's unbelievable that Part I looks so much better in a manga format. Part 2 looks better so far, but i think they dropped the quality for episode 12 AGAIN...

Toriko. This is a favourite of mine. One day i'm gonna post one LONG-A$$ post about why i like it, it will be a REALLY LONG ONE, maybe it'll take a couple of years, i don't know. I got started with the anime first. I didn't truly like it until the Regal Arc, but after that i got hooked hard. Yeah, Tina is annoying. I guess i like it so much because it's simply awesome. And THAT'S enough of an explanation for now.

really day one? When did you start watching? For an anime TV series in 1999 it was very good animation wise. And I'm almost sure that it stayed pretty good compared to other series animation wise for a few years after.

The original hxh anime came out in 1999 as well, and its animation flies so high above One Piece's it's not even funny.
Good animation is timeless. There are things that came out decades ago that look far better than many recent stuff.

Yes, hxh's advantage was that it had a limited number of episodes, so maybe what I'm trying to say start rage at Toei is that long running animes of an unfinished manga shouldn't exist in the first place, and the only reason they do is because of the excesses of capitalism that allow the mediocre to thrive, or to say it otherwise, that allow a company to make lots of money out of a mediocre product, an anime of which 90% of the episodes are drawn and animated by people that have no business being called artists or animators, let alone be paid for the stuff they put out, and directed/paced by people with a PhD in padding and wasting time, just because people will still buy it, and tune in every sunday because it has the "One Piece" staple on it, even if, at its core, it's as far removed from the original manga as it gets.

That being said, the only reason I'm waaaay more pissed at the OP anime than the Naruto anime or anything else, other than the fact that I like the OP manga more than Naruto's, is that, at least, Studio Pierrot stops the bs and makes GREAT episodes from time to time.
The average Naruto episode is as shitty as the average OP episode but, once in a while, you get episodes like the Minato flashback a few months ago, like the Kakashi + Ino, Shikamaru, Chouji vs Hidan and Kakuzu episode, like that one episode of Jiraiya vs summoning Pain, like the "Shikamaru emo-ing over Asuma" episode, like the 10 vs 100 puppets fight etc etc. Or even in early 2000 Naruto, that Haku vs Naruto episode, or so many Orochimaru episodes, and so many more.
There's nothing, and I mean absolutely nothing in the OP anime that even compares to any of those episodes. And it's really sad cause the source material for OP is quite superior to Naruto's.
What's the difference then? Naruto is in the same boat: dangerously close to the manga and has been around for hundreds of episodes, yet look at the animes.

The absolute most you can hope for in the OP anime is a well animated 30 seconds sequence once every 50 episodes.

Damn, just imagine if OP had fallen into the hands of someone else…someone with more respect to the source material and that actually puts in enough talent and money. Or maybe would've had the descency of taking breaks whenever they caught up to the manga, or making good fillers, instead of giving us "5 action double pages per episode" pacing.

                                                                            /end nerd rage at TOEI.

Weird reason that doesn't make much sense.
The skills needed for being a good director or writer do not correlate with how colourful or lively your/any work is.

Maybe I chose my words poorly.
What I meant to say is that One Piece relies immensely on its imaginative, crazy world and larger than life, over the top cast with crazy quirks, and lots of spectacle etc.
Something like that just begs to be brought to life through animation and sounds/voices, and would be a joy for talented people to work on in order to achieve that.
I don't know what the word for that job would be, but Oda would be the architect in a way, 'cause animation isn't a one man job.

Of course, our imagination does things much better than anime ever could, but still…I can totally see One Piece in the hands of the Ghibli people respeonsible for Spirited Away and Howl's moving Castle, with Oda playing the role of Miyazaki.

                                                                            @wolfwood:

Really? To me the voice work was the saving grace of the adaptation

Lol. Maybe I'm just too annoyed by Monta's voice. I like the VA as Usopp, but as Monta, he kinda gets on my nerves…and I wish Hiruma's was...I don't know, better.

DarthAsthma 1 Reply Last reply Reply Quote 0

The old anime had a dark and mature feel to it, the new adaption is too bright for my liking and also the animation seems to be aimed at a younger demography. Also in my opinion the old one had better bgm and sound tracks.

Well when we're only speaking about the animation, sure but that's kind of a bad comparison point since you know HxH has like 3 really great animated fights(hanzo vs gon, hisoka vs gon, uborgin vs kura) whereas the rest is censorship bs and the fact that most of the fights in HxH don't involve a lot of movement (a lot of one scene affairs with characters one shotting another etc).
One Piece fights in comparison have more movement and they happen way more frequently so yeah budget distribution…

I think it's in this case you can't come around but judging them as a whole and I'd argue while I think HxH has really high heights, which early one piece didn't reach it also has really low lows, which the early op episodes didn't have either.

Also saying one piece is extremely mediocre while comparing to something that I'd argue is one of the better/best(meh what's the adjective that fits between better and best? :P) tv adaptions animation wise is kind of a bad way to determine it. I mean I'd say the zatch bell anime was pretty mediocre(because most tv stuff at the time looked like that) and that came out 2003.

Well when we're only speaking about the animation, sure but that's kind of a bad comparison point since you know HxH has like 3 really great animated fights(hanzo vs gon, hisoka vs gon, uborgin vs kura).

Man, how could you forget the Zoaldyecks vs Kuroro? XD
That was some sweet sweet stuff! And if memory serves, that one fight with Killua vs those dudes/brothers in a wheel chair or whatever looked nice too.

And it's more than that. There were a lot of non-fighting episodes that looked great as well.
I remember one episode revolving around that young girl who serves as a guard in the Zoaldyeck household who wouldn't let Gon pass as being extremely well drawn for example.

I mean…...there's a clear difference between what the adaption was in the beginning and what it is now. Now we get episodes with terrible pacing (one episode in Impel Down covered half a chapter, what), the art ranges from good to downright terrible, and overall, some scenes seem really flat (dimensionally) or really unimpressive (aesthetically); the latter of which takes away the impact from key scenes.

Not saying East Blue was the pinnacle of animation, but…....I cringe a lot more watching One Piece episodes nowadays.

I know a lot of people really liked it when they saw it back on toonami, but compared to the manga, it's atrocious. First, the violence is censored. This matters, because a big part of Trigun is the DESPAIR that Vash has to go through, and when everyone dies clean deaths it doesn't come through as much. Wolfwood's fight against Grey the Ninelives, for example, ends in Wolfwood shooting a rocket into Grey's chest cavity, and then strangling the midgets living inside him to death on top of the bloody corpse. For me that always stood out as a sort of "is this really the world they live in?" moment, as well as showing the contrast between Vash and Wolfwood. In the anime, Grey is a robot and gets blown up but still shoots a missile or something. bleh.

another thing, is Anime Vash is a major pussy who takes non-violence to the max. Nearly every episode ends with him staring down someone who has a gun to someone else's head, and Vash pleads with them to not fire. Then they usually turn on him, and he disarms them. It works, I guess, but it gets repetitive It also makes him look like an idiot who can't aim, neither of which are true. Because Manga Vash is totally willing to shoot a bitch, but he'll shoot them in the leg, or in the shoulder, or just wing 'em a little. He doesn't KILL, which is the really important part. But he's not stupid enough to believe that he can get by without at least wounding people. And with his gun skills, there's no reason why he can't shoot non-lethal wounds all day long.

in general, the anime just feels so neutered. There's not as much death, not as much violence, not as much despair, the heroes don't get beat up as much, there isn't that glorious finale with the people of the city actually understanding vash for once, Vash killing Legato lacks all impact, Legato himself is hardly as vile, and the animation is often still, repeated, or recycled.

Just about the only thing the anime did better was that Merle and Millie were more actual characters. I guess the anime handled the light-hearted, in-between-fights scenes better, and had more of them. But that's also why it was a lighter show, there was more humor and fun. in the manga, all the humor died a painful death about halfway through, and beat you down with the depressing, cynical, hateful nature of the world. Which makes Vash's moments of shining heroism all the more wonderful. The anime played it too safe, and too happy, and ended up not being worth anything.

I beg everyone who watched the anime to read the manga, please.
