Solid episode. I didnt like the interaction of Usopp with the crew. I think, already at last episode, they overdid his fear a bit.
580: ''A Scorching-Hot Battle! Luffy vs. the Giant Dragon''

Despite lowering my standards every week there's always 1-2 things that annoy me in the episode.
1. Usopp being too much of a coward. He was not portrayed that way during the respective scenes in the manga and TOEI's exaggerating too much; to the point where Usopp- Usopp of all things- starts to annoy me.
2. The dragon didn't get the treatment he deserved. Its manga counterpart was a terrifying and ferocious beast, beautifully drawn and strong enough to deliver a short but good fight. In the anime the dragon was drawn sloppily in my eyes and it lost all dignity once it chomped on its own wing for a good five seconds… only leading to it becoming a statist for comedic purposes. It's sad if you think about it. I feel like dropping the anime version of OP because of such episodes (actually it started after the timeskip) but ultimately can't bring myself to do so because I've been following the show for nearly 600 episodes.
-
the soundtrack when hazmat soldiers enter..i think its a bit similar to this one
-
I agree with your first point, but not with the second. I didn't really find the dragon terrifying in the manga either. He looked more stupid than scary.
-
So…
no new opening, no! [/insert zachri's favourite character here].
Oh okay.
I shoulda guessed HE wouldn't be appearing yet, what with the titles and whatnot… I know that! Law only enters sometime after we find the Samurai's legs
-
New opening only when…
! Law appears.
Im thinking the same thing…
Anyway just a good episode. Nothing more nothing less.
Ah! and lol at the bite at the wing scene
-
Knowing that he should come in 3 episodes, we can hope for a new opening in 3-4 weeks. I hope.
-
They really played up Usopp's cowardliness this episode. It wasn't this bad in the manga. Just a few lines. Here it's minutes of him being like that, with Zoro, Luffy and Robin being there, too. It annoyed me a little last week, but I hate it this week. Ugh. some filler fighting could've been done or something instead of that. :getlost:
-
I just wonder how they're going to censor
! Trafalgar taking out Smoker's heart.
if you wonder about that, what about
! Zoro cut in half Monet?????
-
@The:

! This is actually not a problem considering Zoro didn't use Haki, so there's no blood.

! Confused. I think that will happen vice versa

! It's probably only her snow form that will be bisected so there's no need to censor it in any shape or form. Maybe make the scene black and white to add some drama to it but that's all really.

I liked this episode for the most part. The art and animation never seemed to get in the way, for one, which is always the biggest concern. The filler stuff on the ship was also really well done (well, all the filler stuff really, and Robin even got to do something by catching Luffy and Zoro, making her almost as useful as Usopp and his trampoline). The fight against the dragon was cool, and I think everything was accurate too. This episode managed to fulfill all my realistic expectations of the anime, so good show.
I always figured Usopp was more freaked out by the concept of fighting a dragon that he was by the dragon itself. I don't think I've seen him get more freaked out in the manga after the timeskip ended than he did against that dragon. So him going a little over the top with the fear there was fine with me.
It's nice that Toei actually let Zoro cut the dragon's head off, but censorship has still gone up a bit from the dinosaur decapitation in Little Garden. Very similar, but the dinosaur wasn't hollow in the anime (neither bled, so no complaint about that).
I did have a bit of an issue with the dragon biting its own wing. That one got a little bit too fancy with the gags. The dragon mowing down on its own wing like it was its last meal rather than a single accidental bite, followed by the ridiculously cartoony reaction, was all just a little too over the top for the situation. I don't think I'd care about it if it happened in the middle of the fight, though. My expectations of the end of a fight are easily more serious than the rest. I mean, that gag wound up costing the dragon its life. Gags don't usually work like that. Despite how much I wrote about it, though, it's still just a minor complaint. I can look past it, and I thought the rest was good anyway.
-
@Sir:
The end of the dragon fight was terrible. When it bit its own wing for like ten seconds and fell in the most retarded manner possible, destroyed the scene imo.
I don't think it was a full 10 seconds, but didn't that happen in the manga? You guys have to remember that certain things translate differently in the anime version from paper. In the manga you can get away with "scene one, boom, scene two" but there needs to be some transition. I'm not saying the anime hasn't been guilty in the past of extending scenes far too much, but it didn't bother me that much here.
My only real issue with the episode is, as already mentioned and supported by others, the exaggeration of Usopp's cowardice. It looks like it may be the same next week, unfortunately.

8 seconds :ninja:. I don't know, I just felt that the scene was silly, I saw it more as a single bite in the manga.

You could be right, but it just didn't bother me personally.

cuz the manga is drawn not a moving object like the anime.

Exactly. It's his voice actor gobbling like an irritated turkey and being in focus that's the problem. In the manga he's off to the side, not in the foreground panicking throughout the vast meat of this chapter. His voice actor's great, don't get me wrong, but he doesn't constantly need to be in terror mode.

That's only him

Remember when Gear second looks fast and have an awesome sound effect? :getlost:
-
Remember when Gear Second was only meant to be brought out when Luffy was against an especially tough opponent that signified how high the stakes were getting?
-
sigh This episode was okay overall. Things happened. But the animation again to me felt it had no impact anywhere.

@Mark:

Gear Second has become the new Super Saiyan in my opinion. It used to be so badass when it was first introduced and then became severely overused following its introduction.
-

I remember when I had caught up to the One Piece anime during Enies Lobby, then after seeing the awesomeness of Gear Second…his second tussle w/ it was so "meh" that I was afraid that Gear Second battles were gonna be lame.
During around the first 2 1/2 minutes of this video:
I mean, compared to his fight w/ Blueno, they really slowed down his attacks. They looked just like his normal attacks except w/ an extra punch and sfx. I can't remember if this particular one was filler, but it felt like it. I mean, it took Luffy almost 3 seconds to shoot his Jet Pistol while in the air…wtf. I'm glad they got their crap straight during his last use of Gear Second in their fight and made it epic again. ^^

My opinion it that they want to show us that Lucci waw stronger of Luffy and don't forget about the battle w Blueno make him tired

That about sums it up.

! Oh yeah, totally forgot Monet was introduced so early on. Can't wait to hear her voice.

It just means the New World is no joke.

Having Lucci tank all of Luffy's attacks would've been enough to show us he was strong. Just comparing this fight w/ his fight w/ Blueno and his final Gear Second fight w/ Lucci, you can see the difference. The attacks look fast and powerful in those fights…not slow and strong like in this one. It could just be me, but this was the first time I was being disappointed w/ how a fight was being portrayed in the anime.
-
Well it certainly doesn't help that your example came from episode 302 one of, if not the, worst animated One Piece episode of the HD era.
But anyway, my point was that Gear Second was bound to lose its luster given how often Luffy spams it these days.

Not sure but i have never bothered from little things like that
Maybe it's my fault that I am a very affable and hard to find the opposite to anything

I call that evolution (someway)
Right now we have so much strong opponents that usual classic attack work like a tickle. So stronger guys -> stronger attacks and even stronger attacks like Red Hawk etc less often to be viewed

I'm actually the same way too. I still enjoy the anime despite many others hating on it since the pacing went really downhill. But when you see Gear Second for the 2nd time, it's kinda weird seeing Luffy floating in the air for 3 seconds before attacking, or a shot of Lucci looking puzzled for 1-2 seconds before deciding to look up. Again, it's a nitpick, I'll admit. But it did worry me nonetheless of how bad Gear Second could be handled.

That happens everywhere and i think it is like they slow down th clock (if you understand what i mean) for more feelings (i guess)

Even worse, it's really starting to lose some of the rubbery fun of the character. One of the few things I liked about the conclusion of the filler arc is that he at least, for once, tried an old-fashion (if haki-infused) Gomu Gomu no Pistol.

I reeeeeally hope we get a new opening soon! of course it probably will be out by when
! Law appears like others have said.

The worst part of the episode is how Robin and Ussop ran together in a U-shape..that was really…i do not know what to say.

oops I'm sorry about that, thanks for telling me

As opposed to.. walking through walls? Or was Robin supposed to tank the dragon's fire with her tits?

Well perhaps she could if…
No never mind, it would be too messy.

Luffy should pull a Gohan and just stay on gear second the entire time so that when the time comes he can go into gear second version 2 lol
I know people can do whatever the hell they want, but I don't know how someone can only follow the anime. Knowing the manga is farther ahead would just eat my curiosity lol. Plus the manga is way better than the anime, IMO

I feel the same way, I wouldn't be able to resist the urge.

Looking back knowing what Luffy was about to do now biting his thumb like that, it makes me wonder, what if he had to do Gear 3rd Gigant Pistol to defeat Bleuno back then? At the time, he still had the weakeness of becoming chibi every time he used Gear 3rd. Now, he has no weaknesses whatsoever with either Gear and uses them in conjunction with Haki with reckless abandon. It really makes me wonder what his next new advancement will be, and how that will impair him.

The silicone she has implanted in her breasts are fire-proof.

I'd agree with you, but I guess it depends on which way and how much you get into a series in a way. Stuff like Soul Eater, Shaman King, FMA, and Kuroko's Basket I started watching in anime version and never felt the need to read the manga. Hell, most of them I just watch the anime and call it a day. Of those four, the only manga I've read was FMA. Admitedly though for Soul Eater I wikied the ending because it seemed like random stuff was happening, and I felt like it was pulling one of those "we're no longer faithful to the manga" transitions, and indeed I was correct.
Something I find funny though… I wonder if Anime only watchers on this forum block sigs. Because if not... seeing stuff like your sig Foxy... they must get really confused.

I highly doubt there any anime-only watchers here. As much as its appreciated to prevent spoilers, just looking at people's avatars and signatures that haven't been introduced in the manga would have ruined much of the surprise for them.

There are actually a few confirmed people but they don't ever really post. I still just mostly avoid spoilers in my posts because I hardly ever have a reason to talk about them in the anime section besides saying "Can't wait to see that!"
But still, it's the courteous thing to do just in case.
-
I was anime only for a few years because I hadn't thought to read the manga back then and I started watching it back in 2006. I only started reading it after I caught up and couldn't sit for a few hours a day and watch episodes back to back. The other issue I had was I didn't know of a good place to read it.
I couldn't really imagine being anime only though. Knowing that I'm super behind the most current.
