Hah, I've had this nagging feeling that something is badly wrong ever since I got my first few weeks' salary and thought the figures looked dubiously small. I checked everything was okay back then and arrived at the conclusion that it really was the case, but the feeling didn't go away so I finally got around to double-checking everything to make sure I hadn't made a mistake myself.
And there it was.

I had semi-similar doubts recently because part of my salary comes from a direct sharing of company profits, i.e. left-over money is divided amongst employees (not equally of course) every quarter. And my check would always be way less than I thought it would be until finally I asked. Apparently, legally this has to be reported as a bonus, and the automatic deductions for bonuses are way higher – like 35% or something. So by the time Social Security and all the other crap took its share, I was getting barely over 50% of the original amount. That's such crap! As it was explained to me, that money isn't actually taxed differently in the end, meaning it all goes into the same category when I report my earnings and do my tax returns. So in theory they over-deducted and I get it back when I file my taxes... but it's still bullshit.

Sheer carelessness on my part, mostly. The slip of paper is nothing but a huge disarrayed jumble of figures that have no clear explanation markers anywhere, so it's not really that surprising to find out that I missed the one number that I should have paid the closest attention to.
What pisses me off is that I had everything checked with the secretary in charge of sending this stuff out twice before actually telling her she could forward it to the correct people, at which point she told she would take over and make sure everything goes as it should. Someone has done something really badly wrong at some point, but no one will likely ever find out who, where, or why, so it's possible that this will keep happening in the future as well. At least I know to be more careful from now on.

I absolutely have to, must, need to share my evening
Today, a man known to us as a miserable waste of flesh died in the most comical way
He was a coworker of my mom's who refused to do anything because he was a crony in good with the boss, which would be bad enough given the hell every other employee has to go through every day (my mom in particular might as well have four jobs)–but he was also a sad sack liar who at the height of his confabulation claimed to be a former astronaut (A FORMER ASTRONAUT.) He has also claimed to be a cancer survivor (a miraculous cancer survivor who never lost hair during chemo, fucker must have deeper roots than Brook), pretended to be a certified optometrist (or as he said in his illiterate way, a "doctor of the eyes" [dottore degli occhi]) and told my mom her doctor's diagnosis was wrong without the most cursory examination, and muscled his way through the crazy traffic in Rome by screaming he was a fire marshal–only to be confronted by the fire chief who happened to be stuck there!
Mom was wondering: He was in Columbia when the car accident happened, right? Maybe it was a hit; nobody would mourn his passing. Maybe his wife took him out, or maybe it was something to do with drug dealers.
But those conspiracies were dashed when the news came in--He died by crashing into a COW and hurtling over a CLIFF
And the night became one big cow joke-athon

Speaking of moving, I've decided I'm going to live in New York City in 2 years. But not in the actual city, in an area around it because the rent goes down drastically. I did all of the calculations and found out that gasp if I live just outside of New York City, I can live there on the teacher's salary there ($53k annually!) with money to spare!
I have spent the past few hours summoning up an ungodly amount of drool looking at all the restaurant choices there. And that's just the restaurants… I love the mere look of New York City itself.
If for some reason it all doesn't work out (I've asked multiple people, and I'm about to call up a friend of mine who actually DOES live there in the same way I plan to), then I've got plenty of back-up cities I've decided I can move to after decent research.

Just returned from driving 500km (~300 miles). All the way up to the Syrian frontier in Golan Heights and the Lebanon border on the coast. This, along with all the walking around at old Acre in the mid-day sun, means that I'm tired and exhausted now. Really satisfied and content, but tired.

It was fun. There are so many stories I have from the trip!
As for safety, it was actually pretty cool. Golan is the only one of the territories Israel captured in the Six Day War that it unilaterally annexed (oh, and Jerusalem) - Sinai was returned to Egypt and Gaza and the West Bank are the UN observer state of Palestine. Going to the West Bank requires some hoop-jumping (mainly getting stopped at a variety of checkposts) and going to Gaza is flat-out mental. Not to mention, you cannot drive into Palestine with a rental car (I think). Going into Golan is a breeze. But for going up some steep hills, you wouldn't know you're in technically disputed territory. Most of the original Druze population of the territory just don't give a fuck who oppresses them, Syria or Israel. Consequently, no international attention to this area (apart from token UN peacekeepers manning the ceasefire line/de-facto border). The War in Syria hasn't reached the parts of Syria adjoining thus region apart from one minor abortive rebel attempt to take Quneitra, the erstwhile capital of the Syrian Golan region (and a brutal reminder of the sad bits of war and the stupidity of nationalism). It in fact, is one of Israel's most peaceful post-1974 frontiers.

Huh, interesting. Thanks for sharing this. One of my friends does activism work in Palestine and she writes a lot about the trouble she has getting things done there. She hasn't gone so far north as Lebanon though.

Energy drinks help me think and help me calm down, making me feel less like a rapid cascade of thoughts in human form. I'm aware that this is pretty broken, but I know a few other people who get similar effects. It's actually less great than it sounds because if you do need something to wake you up, caffeine doesn't.

Caffeine does nothing for me, as far as I can tell. It may not wake me up but it sure doesn't stop me from sleeping. And the latter effect is better than the former.

I drank so much coffee in college that I built a pretty good immunity for caffeine. I remember running around a coffee shop after drinking a double espresso shot in my first year. Now, I'll gulp down that motherf**ker like it were water. Maybe I'd grimace a little at the taste.
OT: I returned the rental car today, and found out that someone had hit my car while it was parked in Akko. But my neurotic self had taken full insurance anticipating something like this would happen. Woo hoo! They also billed me 50 shekels for being a young driver. Ageists!

Never had that much of an effect from an energy drink, though. Took Adderrall one time and I talked to everyone in the school including the janitors. I mean f**king everyone. The jitters that time were worth it.I like tangents. So the guy I bought Adderall from was Billy, this guy who kept the pills in this black jacket of his. Billy was a talented man, improv-speed rapping whenever the chance arose (or even when it didn't). Among his talents included his ability to store pills for every kind of possible humanly desire in his jacket. I liked Billy.

No. It was this wet, lemony pulpy mess that made the bread soggy and the lettuce into a big lemon flavoured piece of seaweed.
The salmon was the only good thing about it because it didn't lose it's flavour but I had to cherry pick the damn thing out of the bread before I threw it away.
FUCK whoever thought that was a good idea.
