Are you pulling a Foolio on me.
-
I have started typing 'color' for 'colour' without thinking about it since becoming a frontend developer. It's horrific.
-
I bastardize the spelling in a pretty horrendous way, honestly, and can't always even be bothered to change it with people I speak with which is really quite bad. In my Euro mongrel speech, I write all ou words with two letters instead of one but very seldom actually use the predominantly British s for -ise/-ize verbs. Thanks Foolio. :P
And then my vocabulary is a nasty mess that mixes lexical items from all sorts of weird places, mostly from upper middle class British English and Californian English. Which is bizarre in and of itself.
At least I get away with it for saying that, as a linguist, I know of the particular conventions and choose to bend them to my own convenience.
-
Colour looks prettier.

Colour looks prettier.
This, basically. "Keep it simple, stupid" was never one of my favourite rules of thumb.
-
Color and Colour are just constant proof to me that English pronunciation is one of the stupidest things in this world. It's what I will forever love about stuff like Spanish and Korean and many other languages: once you learn how to pronounce the alphabet, you can pretty much pronounce anything even if you've never seen nor heard the word.
But learning English you see a new word, pronounce it by guesswork, and then people laugh at you. Pff.
-
It's the most fun about English, pronunciation stuff.
My language is boring compared to that, you read everything the way they are written and then you have to study grammar, which even I myself dunno that well. At least English grammar is easy.
And 'course colour is prettier.

Haha, that's what I love about it to be honest. I remember my great-grandma saying once "How strange is English, they write things down and say completely different things!" Hungarian if kinda straightforward in that regard, we say how we write stuff (mostly…), but oh boy, try to understand how we have a hundred different forms for one little verb. But we don't have as many tenses; past, future, present. We used to have more, but someone had to ruin the fun and make "past perfect" in Hungarian go away :(
It sounds awesomeAbout verbs… I've always wondered why the verbs "have/ha/haben/avoir" and "be/vara/sein/e^tre" seems to be irregular in a lot of languages. Even in Hungarian. Is it perhaps because these two verbs are the most basic ones? They were probably the "first" verbs to come to life? Is this only in Indo-European languages?
-
All this talk of British/alternate English has me wondering….
what's the deal with "arse" vs. "ass"? Honest question.

Wait, so no one uses the past perfect in present hungarian?
Also, I have wondered the same about the verbs for "to have", "to be", as well as the verb "to go".
The only non-european language I have reference to though is Korean, and in that one, from what I remember of it, those verbs behave in the same exact way as others.
Like 있다 can be used for "to have" (and "to be" as well, actually) and like all korean verbs you just drop 다 and replace with the ending depending on mood, tense and formality. Same for "to go" (가다).Not sure how other languages go about treating those three verbs in particular, but I'd definitely be interested to know.

Soo….I got a 96.5 on my Calculus test, and a 89.5 on my Economics test. Very pleased with the first grade, not so much for the second. But at least in both cases, I can (hopefully) finish the semester strong.

An 89.5? That isn't a bad grade at all; very good job. -

I remember the days when 89.5 was something that was mediocre.
Of course, that was probably back in high school, so obviously the world has changed my standards for the worse lol

I guess it'd an awesome grade if my Economics class was harder than it is atm.
I mean…..not only have I had classes where the majority of the class would fail a test, I myself have failed tests (albeit rarely). So it's just me being picky as usual. A 89.5 is good, practically a 90.

Back in undergrad/last two years of high school, my college used a system of grading without - or +, so an A was an A. Next, as the classes got harder the grading curve tended to be easier. On the other hand that came with the condition that the classes were difficult of course though.
Now an A is scaled at roughly an 88 and above lol, and 93 and up is A+. It's harder than you'd expect though because even a few questions can knock you down a grade.
I can't wait til actual med school where it's just pass/fail at that point lol
-
I remember doing a sort of Game Theory analysis of a pass/fail system as compared to one with more nuanced grades, in terms of the pros and cons each would provide in terms of their effect on student motivation, in a theoretical model. It was really quite interesting; pity I can't actually remember the details of the analysis anymore, I would probably have to try and see if I could work it back out myself.
-
This was not a good Day, like at all. Ugh, i think i'll just go back to work.
edit: ok, that was supposed to say bed. What the hell?
-
At the end of this month, I will complete a month in my new job…So fast.. The good part is that each week of this month, I had to work in a different area in the library (research, organization and reading), this week I will work in the repair area.
All this to see what area I adapt myself more, the area I most enjoyed working was the research area and the one I least liked was the reading area.
I still have one last place to work, maybe I will change my mind...Who knows ??
Life: FINALLY !!
I could beat a Touhou game !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Stocked up on a bunch of new spices today. Finally got some cumin and coriander, so it's pretty much Mexican food week next week.
Throughly bastardized of course

My bluetooth ear buds decided tonight to stop working with my netbook for some reason. It's definitely Lubuntu's fault, but so far my attempts at fixing it have been unsuccessful. It's only been a day since I upgraded to the new version, but already I've run into quite a few problems. Guess I should have waited a month or two more so some of the bugs could get ironed out.
In the meantime though, I'm gonna go have some ice cream.
-
I guess i'll just listen to this to at least end the day in a, i guess, neutral note.
-
New coffee shop opened up today across the street. Some quirks they're ironing out, and it seems like someone jumping into the biz with all of the stuff probably preowned (tables had scratches and none of them really matched), but, hey, can't go too wrong with putting it right across a dorm I suppose.
-
Son of a- That bot is more articulate than me.

I get to see my first ballet today! :D

Update: Bluetooth started working again. Didn't really do anything though. So I really have no idea what was wrong or how exactly it was fixed. Guess I'll just have to expect wonky behavior till the kinks are worked out of the new upgrade.

Hmm, that's interesting. Maybe it is an Indo-European thing after all~
Yeah, past perfect, or as we call it "the old past" (régmúlt) hasn't been used since a very long time. It certainly makes learning English interesting as that language loves to express certain things through tenses and not wording.

Awesome, I accidentally broke the good umbrella I got for Christmas. >_>
In work related matters, because a) the theater isn't doing so well profit-wise? and b) many of us don't seem to listen to rules and stuff, our movie perks are completely gone. Yes, we have to pay for any and all food and movie viewings. No discount, too.
It's not a huge bummer for me because I see movies so infrequently (not enough time during the week), but we'll get our perks(?) back if after two months, all of us have shaped up considerably.
-
Other cleaning my bathroom and making a bunch of changes to my most popular project, nothing special really. Now the next thing I need to do is wash my clothes.
-
Yes! I had enough money to buy my ticket to Franz Ferdinand! Now i just need to go watch a Taste of Sin Tomorrow and i will forget some of the pressure that i've had at work and at home.

I saw Bill Nye the Science Guy and Dr. Michio Kaku speak at the USA Science & Engineering Festival today! Bill might have gotten old but his enthusiasm and love of science and all things mysterious is as vibrant/infectious as ever. Unfortunately he only did a short speech and introduction to the main speaker but it was great seeing him up close. My only regret is that I didn't have my phone on me for pictures because it was charging at my booth and I didn't want to go and retrieve it for fear of losing my spot (which would have happened).
Anyway, I'll be working again tomorrow and I'll see him again but this time I'm taking pictures.

Kicked off the barbecue season early this year. Ready, steady, let's not eat inside again until August!
Marinated a nice fillet of pork in some red wine, olive oil, garlic, soy, rosemary, paprika, cumin and chili, and put together some nice skewers with mushrooms, pork and veggies. To that i made some roasted potatoe slice, white mushrooms stuffed with blue cheese and wrapped in bacon and served with some pepper bearnaise, aoili and some fresh pea pods. And for dessert a huge pitcher of Sangria
And tomorrow is another barbecue day. If anyone has a fun idea for something to BBQ please do throw it out here
-
Nothing special, but just get some corncobs and put those on the grill. It's just that tasty. I've been having those on almost every single meal this week and I still crave for more.
-
Corncobs with loooots of butter is already on the menu curteousy of my darling.
But me i'm kinda in the mood for some really creamy coleslaw. Maybe it's time for an old fashioned deluxe burger.
Burgers and 'slaw are unbeatable together
-
Sounds deadly.

HHmmm, Corn on the cob, one of my favorite foods to eat at a BBQ, along with chicken, pork chops, peas, rolls, etc.!
Damnit, now I feel like looking for a local family BBQ and crash it for free food! XD

You just reminded me that i've been meaning to try making a beer can chicken this summer.
If you do (crash that is) remember to pretend to be that relative they are only vaguely aware of. Like uncle sex offender
-

Beer can chicken? :wassat:
Never heard of that before. Is it good?
-
No, no, he spelled that right, beer can chicken. The basic idea is you cook a chicken with a can of beer inside it, something about providing moisture, I believe? I've certainly never done it myself, so I'm hazy on any details, but I've seen the idea tossed around before.
-
First time I hear about it :O
-
I Think it is made boiling a canned chicken in a thick broth of beer or something like that.
Edit: I'm seeing Casablanca <3

Oh crap I spelled it wrong! Sorry about that, I'm just so tired right now. Lol
So anyway, that's how it's done huh? What a strange method of cooking chicken. Interesting I'll admit, but still strange.

Just got back from Day 2 of the Science and Engineering Festival and this time I got the some pictures of Bill on stage.
[Hide][/hide][hide][/hide][hide][/hide]
Apparently we should figure out how to deflect an asteroid from impacting earth in the future and we shouldn't send Bruce Willis. I'm already out of ideas. :/

On the subway I spotted…this.
But on the bright side, The Wind Rises was amazing.

sums up how my day has gone :getlost:
First I've not been able to sleep at all last night., think it was around 11 am .. yes 11 AM… I finally got some sleep ... only sleep for 2 hrs and be wake after the stupidest of dreams....In the dream I was shopping at some mall with my mom (who's been dead fore 10 yrs now so don't know why she's in a dream!) shopping. We are leaving, her by car and me? Well for some stupid reason I am catching a taxi. … yes I am there with my mother who is capable of driving (which she couldn't do since 1995!) but I am not riding with her but catching a taxi. Already the dream makes no sense…
Then I get a call saying the taxi is at the front, and I tell them it would take 2 minutes to reach there. Now here is the 2nd wtf of the dream. I am originally riding in a electric cart for handicaps... ok not wtf there, I do that in real life due to bad knees… but then I leave the cart to walk to the front when using the cart would have taken a lot less time.
In some odd hint to the 1st wtf, I tell my mom I will see her when I get home. …. if we lived together why am I riding a taxi instead of with her????
3rd wtf- somehow the 2 minutes become 5 (gee I wonder, could it be that even in my dream I'm handicapped and should have used that cart?!?) and then bizarrely I am in the middle of thee mall which is also where the impossibly large cinema with a maze like floorplan is (and don't ask why I am in there, its a wtf dream!) and I am lost.4th wtf- I am soo totally lost that I look around and holy shit I see the tracks for luggage… that is right somehow the incredibly huge mall with this bizarre maze movie theatre in its middle has an AIRPORT on one side! and I have no idea HOW I got inside it! (I guess the don't have TSA at this megamall-theatre-airport) and why am I not tripping out on the why its there. No I am anxious on how the hell to get out and to the front doors of the mall to meet the taxt (shouldn't that damn thing be gone by that point? I should be worried there is a damn airport at a big mall!) I finally ask someone to give directions but they say the shortest route is to walk outside the mall (since when is THAT the shortest path!) but would take 15 min to reach the front doors (yeah right, least double that for the handicapped me) I ask for someone to guide me to the doors inside the mall … and they tell me it would take 30 mins that way!
and I wake up as I follow the oh-so-helpful guide through the maze of that impossible mall. Really there are several feelings one should not experience as they come to consciousness ... and "What The Fuck!" confusion is really disorientating.
Worse part… the second half of that dream is a recurring dream to me. The addition of my late mom is the variant, but in this recurring dream I'm at a mall, get lost in the movie theater area (which is always in the middle and huge) only to some how end up on the opposite end of the mall where there is an airport and I wake up at the point someone is guiding me out.
