Steven Universe

Lately, things have been running in "Steven Bombs:" weeks full of new episodes followed by silence. We just had a Steven Bomb a few weeks ago and we're going to have another starting July 13th. You'll be in good shape so long as you catch up before then.
Hmm…..10 days for 50+ episodes? I don't think that's my speed.
Although who knows, I might just get that hooked.

Yeah, why should he be the arbiter of taste?
Why not me?

Well, they're each 11 minutes long, so it isn't that bad at all. If you don't make it in time, though, it's almost guaranteed there's gonna be a break after that Steven Bomb, so five more episodes, but many more days.

My ultimate goal is to be caught up by the end of the summer, but sooner than later isn't bad either.
-
Because the eps are only 11 minutes long, you can realistically catch up on the whole thing in two or three fairly casual sessions.

Can't say I care about this of crowd either(like people that jump on soley because of Jailbreak, or those that say it didn't get good until Jailbreak… despite the show being great from the start), but whatever convinces a herd of wandering sheep into a stable.

Just got done watching The Test. Steven, I'm so sorry I doubted you. You…you're a sweet guy.
And Hiroy, I'm sorry that you don't care for us, but as a member of that crowd I'm at least quite glad Doug announced his vlogs of this show
. It made me go "so I guess this like the next big thing if he starts covering it? Well, I've been fond of all the other shows he's done so far, so I guess we have similar taste, and I remember this thing has a thread on apforums and they seem to like it, so this is as good a time as any to check it out". Sometimes you just need that last nudge.
Edit: aaaaaaaand that was "On the Run". The feels....the feeeeeels!

Not to sound like I'm riding a bike backwards over the grassland, but you're always cool Daz. Welcome to Steven's Universe.

You're going fast!
Who's your favourite character out of the big4 -
@Daz:
So yeah, gave this thing a shot, Thanks AP!
Well, since Doug Walker is watching the show now, I figured I'd hop on board.
I've decided to get into this show as well
Gooble Gobble one of us!

That seems to be the new modus operandi CN is going with. They did the same thing for Adventure Time and Teen Titans Go.

Hey now, I would've watched it on my own eventually. It's just, you know, since he said he was going to start reviewing them, I figured, why not? I started Gravity Falls and Daredevil on my own before he reviewed them, and I still haven't seen Avatar.

Better late than never! Spoiler tagging just to be sure:
! My favourite is Garnet and it has a lot to do with Jailbreak and her being a fusion. You see, when that episode came out, I was really deep depression and and I struggled a lot expressing my pains and feelings. I felt utterly messed up and stuff, all I'm saying. Then came the episode, in which Garnet turns out to be two gems, who create one new through fusion. Somehow, I could connect with this. At that time especially I felt I was breaking apart: one moment I behaved like one sort of person, the next another sort. I was afraid there was actually some kind of deep problem in me (aside from depression).
However, the episode, Garnet, and the whole concept of being a fusion for life made me think "Hey, maybe I can work properly while having three parts that alone could be people themselves but function basically as one entity!". It made me so much easier to explain certain things to my friends and psychologist and made me accept that maybe I'm like three person in one, but I'm still a person and I'm not broken beyond hopeless.
! In short, it made me deal with that I have 3 entities inside of me that create one whole~ -

WOOOW indeed!
Apparently Rebecca Sugar and Ian Jones-Quartey have a cameo in Little Witch Academia 2The director and character designer Yoh Yoshinari is known for his love of Western animation, as his amazing fanart proves.
There's also a stealth appearance of Connie and Dipper/Mable from Gravity Falls. I am pretty sure there is more.
This is so amazing to me since some of my favourite peeps in modern animation are interacting with each other here.
Now Steven Universe better steps up and puts some more anime eastereggs in the background asap.Spoiler for new watchers from here on
! @SpaceCowboy:
! > You know, there's one thing i've liked a lot in these flashback episodes with Rose. With the way the gems talked about her, it always seemed like she was some kind of perfect, flawless, Santa Theresa levels of all that's good and kind in the universe.
These flashbacks always make her seem a lot more… human.
She is flawed, and not just in this episode where she is exploring uncharted territories.
I loved her reactions in story for Steven, and this episode was the pinnacle of that. She's a lot more likable than what I expected. Also "Just ask Garnet". That was funny and sad at the same time. It showed that Greg's concerns had substance behind it and that a lot of "work" has to be done. Or maybe I should say has been done.
! You put it really well and Rose's past is what I am looking forward to the most (maybe with Ruby and Sapphire's past as a close second). A nice thing about the show is how everyone starts out fun and competent but step by step, as Steven grows up, he sees his parental figures from a more vulnerable or even a downright shitty side. In short they become more humane (as much as that word applies to aliens). Pearl is the most heavy case here but I think Rose might take the cake since she has been idolised so, so much.
! We have to consider she was a war general and considered a good tactician, which probably means she was pretty efficient at crushing the opposing side to protect her friends. There is no doubt she has an extremely pure heart, but there is also no way she came out of a war morally untarnished. Especially with the dark tones this show takes once in a while. There's also all the stuff she has been hiding from Pearl that is probably only exclusively accesible through Lion to Steven once he grows up.
Also I can't help but think that Steven was for Rose both a symbol of love, but probably also some kind of political statement or maybe even an investment for the future. A giant middlefinger to Homeworld. Maybe she even anticipated that a halfhuman would be less vulnerable against Gem technology (and she would be right, as "Jail Break" demonstrated), but that would go into crazy chess master tactician territory here.[/hide] -
Wow so many new fans, how nice.
I apologize for not knowing that Doug Walker was still a thing.

I apologize for not knowing that Doug Walker was still a thing.
Don't apologize. He's a funny guy with some interesting things to say about old cartoons, but the way people idolize him and hang on his words is utterly ridiculous.

I was just surprised to know he had such a following to this day. I remember enjoying his early reviews years back, but yeah.
But to be fair, every blogger person who has a large fanbase has its rabid monkey fans and its normal fans. Like, I'm still a fan of AVGN, I'm not worshipping the ground he walks on but I'll still watch his vids every now and then, and if he recommends something I might check it out.

Finally on season 2
You know what I love most about this show? It doesn't flaunt how refreshingly ridiculously progressive it is in a tacky way, which could've been tempting in a lesser show. The main characters are nearly all women, and strong and seasoned warrior women at that. They're all strong and developed characters too, and Garnet is a harmonious union of two female individuals. And theres never any villain to go "YOU ARE STRONG YET YOU ARE WUMINZ?!", no hero to go "WOMEN CAN BE STRONG, GIRL POWER", no episodes lampshading how totally not girly girly these characters are. The gems are allowed to be actual characters instead of staments, and their strength and unity is unquestioned, as if its the most natural things in the world. As it should be.
-
Like Greg says in Story for Steven (which you haven't watched yet): "Women are people."
-
Just watched Too Many Birthdays.
Okay, that's it. Pearl is my new favorite character.
-
Just watched all the currently released episodes in three days. Tumblr spoiled a LOT of important character moments and plot points to me in advance, but the art style and snippets of music and voice acting convinced me to try SU anyway.
Oh boy, was I in for a ride. I had trouble connecting with the series in the beginning, as it seems to be the case for many others, but when I decide to binge-watch something, I DO IT. (with a DON.) I'm so in love with this show~ The animation, characters and voice acting is simply superb.
! Especially the sheer joy of the Stevonnie episode and Rose's video message to Steven in Lion 3 really touched me. Not to mention that the dark and sometimes downright creepy moments make me love it even more. I don't really have a favorite gem or a favorite character, though I gotta say that in addition to Steven's family I also really like Sadie. It's similar to how I feel about the Strawhats - sometimes there are moments or episodes that make me truly love and appreciate an individual character, but in general I love everyone.
So yeah, happy to join the fandom and I'm really looking forward to July 13th!

Its cool that its official confrimed, but considering the show had search for new Story Board artist meant Season 2 had be wrapped up for a bit and Season 3 and potentially 4 has been started.

Just watched Mirror Gem/Ocean Gem.

! -
Heard somewhere that there was leaked episodes on the internet or something. If this is true, I would not want anyone talking about them here. Even behind tags. Con stuff, I don't mind.

That was a great tease! I hope the full panel shows up on youtube soon.

Reveal of Sardonyx!
! No seriously, SPOILER
woman!
!! Woohoo the extendend intro is giving us some sweet little treats. Some anime-esque side glimpse of the evil gem. But more importantly the lyrics reveal something about Garnet's motivation to be on earth (and that Homeworld's agenda is apparently to act like giant douchebags towards fusions 24/7).
! Also dear Sardonyx: Please please please don't be only my imagination and me reading way too much into the bow tie but please actually be voiced by Janelle Monae since that would be the coolest thing ever. If it's actually Janelle Monae, Rebecca Sugar has some magical connections to the music industry and the next goal is a fusion voiced by Beyoncé.:ninja:I gotta dream, man. -

I just watched another clip of it.
! I'm 95% sure that it is Janelle.
-
Here's a cute clip from the cartoon network website uploaded to youtube. Nothing new revealed here, but it's a nice recap of some Gem properties.
-
I've never felt this intense about not wanting to be spoiled about a show before.
Be careful, everyone o.o
-
Ugh! I know! I have to be at work while both this and Gravity Falls premier (tho I no longer have Disney XD, so I will have to…"Find" the show on my own)
I'mma be avoiding the hell out of the internet til then! -
! Well, that wasn't Janelle… i guess it's one of those situations where I heard what I wantedto hear.
Amethyst was this episode's MVP. I admit she's my least favourite of the 3 and most of her emotional moments and revelations seem somewhat forced just for her to keep up with the other 2 when it comes to character depth, but she was amazing in this.
She reproved what Pearl did, but she understood why she did it. The moment she saw Pearl fixing the Hub she knew exactly why it was happening. "Maybe she's trying to figure out how it works" "that's not it...".
! Sardonyx was just amazing in everything. She honestly seem a bit "wacky" compared to the honorable Opal or the vicious Sugalite, but she ended up being better than I expected her to be. Everything about her debut scene was amazing, the score, the lines, the laugh and that final hammer shot made this one of the best and most fun scenes in the show. Sure it didn't have the sense of urgency like in the Opal scene, or imminent danger like Sugalite, but it was... fun. I had a smile on my face the whole time she was destroying the Hub. -
! Jesus Christ, Pearl. You're going to get someone killed one day.
-
! I thought Pearl was supposed to be the responsible one.
! to be honest, I'd kinda like to see another episode with her season 1 personality some more. Now it's all "PEARL IS THIRSTY" 24/7 -
! Wow.
! I suddenly realized I have more in common with Pearl and Amethyst than I thought.
Okay, I'm not picking favourites anymore.
! This ep was heavier than I expected it to be. I was honestly shocked to see it end unresolved like that.
! I'm not a fan of Sardonyx however. Feels so… eh compared to the other fusions. I don't get why she's so wacky, I expected something else from the fusion of Pearl and Garnet. -
[hide]
I'm kinda glad Pearl got nailed the way she did. There's honestly a limit one should tolerate, especially her impulsive/obsessive selfishness and being in general quite insensitive. Not saying I hate her, or dislike her at all. She just needs to know her place a little more often, especially considering her actions could go from relatively harmless to endangering the lives or relations to friends or even people Steven is personaly connected to. Know. I kind of ponder how this thousand year old gem is gonna learn and change XDAs for the rest of it. I really enjoy it. Especially loving all the moments where Steven and Amethyst are together. They are like siblings to me, and it goes to show that they got so much alike.
[/hide] -
! This episode and the Sugilite episode go together perfectly. Just a few days ago Pearl's song was playing in my head: "Can't you see that she's out of control and overzealous? I'm telling you for your own good, and not because I'm- I could show you how to be strong… in the real way." Before that I hadn't realized that Pearl ends her sentence before "jealous", and I was wondering why she would be so jealous of Sugilite, since she clearly had no self control. But now it makes sense, because didn't Sugilite also say "It feels so great to be me"?
! Garnet is my favorite of the gems because I love how she has so much self-confidence without coming off as cocky. That's quite rare to see, but it also makes sense why she would love herself so much, given her backstory. But Pearl and Amethyst are both super insecure about themselves, so it makes sense that they both enjoy fusing with Garnet. It doesn't make them feel strong only physically, but mentally.
! That said, I agree that Steven Universe has a habit of making its characters go slightly overboard for the sake of plot. What Pearl did this episode was pretty similar to how Greg pretended that Steven didn't heal him so they could hang out. I can understand both of their motivations, but I would still expect them to think "Wow, I really shouldn't carry out such an elaborate lie just because I'm selfish".
! Strong start for the week! I can't wait to see the rest~ -
! Pearl was always very selfish and to herself with her own devices tho.
! Her actions in this episode is madly similar to that of her wanting to take Steven to space in "Space Race". She went against Greg's wishes and nearly got Steven and herself killed because of how far she took her own personal ambitions. There was probably even earlier cases of this too in varying degrees. Like once she starts something, she just… keeps going with it. Without even realizing how harmful it could be.
! So I can't really agree with the notion that Pearl's recent development is new or left field. -
Keystone Motel spoilers
! Great episode! Real nice seeing more of Ruby and Sapphire. I love that Ruby's completely obvious flaw is just being uncontrollably tantrum prone for good reason, while Sapphire's isn't completely transparent until she mentions that future vision might make her insensitive to the present events(this is a really cool way to write a character centered around precognition, btw). It's like I'm learning more and more things about the two that makes them so different, and yet… those opposites is the thing that's needed to keep them together, or perhaps better gems/people.
! So yeah. Glad Garnet got a much needed vacation away from everyone. Pearl is obviously trying to fix things, but again... There's more to this than simply looking for Peridot, girl! The apology is a good start though!
! Besides all that, loved all the dialogue from Greg this episode. -
I am stunned.
! I AM AN ETERNAL FLAME, BABY.
-
That was a lot to handle.
-
-
My favorite qoute
I don't think there was a comma before "baby'
! I really like that extremely brief scene of what looked like Pearl and Amethyst having a for real conversation when Seven et al came back. They usually don't have those kind of moments.
