Was it just me that was thinking Vidalia wasn't human?
I've seen some hypothesize that she may be a gem. But if she is indeed Sour Cream's mom, then she would have ended up like Rose. And Sour Cream would also have a gem ability (or at the very least know what Steven's talking about in regards to Being Mom)
-
Aw, did Amethyst grow her hair out because of Greg? That's adorable and makes me think she looked up to him in a way before their falling out after Rose's passing. This show is incredible.

I'm not too sure about Sour Cream, but Onion seems very ominous as a character. If anything is odd, I'd pin it on that character rather than Sour Cream (heck, even Steven questioned if Onion was really human). The only thing I have going for this idea is that Onion was able to use the replicator wand (and I think Amythest did mention that since Steven was "magic", he should be able to figure out how to use it). But, I dunno…shrug
(I really hope that's the case as it would be remarkably interesting having another human gem hybrid that the Crystal Gems didn't know about)

In context of the most recent episodes, that would make sense, but as Taboo pointed out, there's a flashback photo that shows her with long hair 200 years ago.
The series clearly has a very structured story bible and they know where they're going with things, but its hard to judge how an early detail like that might actually fit overall.

My first (and probably most obvious) theory would be that the gems have (or had) access to some form of time travel technology. And Greg would have most likely used it at one point seeing as he hinted at being present one thousand years ago when the gems first tried to invade the Earth.
But, as you said, it's a bit hard to judge at this point in the series.
-
Amethyst probably grew it out again (and maybe stopped being a toddler) under Greg's influence.
-
I always thought Gems didn't aged.
-
They don't but they can shape-shift. Maybe Amethyst felt more comfortable in the form of a younger kid. She is technically the youngest of the main three Crystal Gems.
-

well, if "Steven and the Stevens" was any indication, they did have access to time travel through that hourglass Steven got at that underwater temple. It's not a stretch to think they have made use of it before Steven's tampering.
-
I think people are kinda looking too deeply in Greg's "it's not like I was there" comment. Personally think he wanted to say that the war from 1000 years ago had nothing to do with him without looking like he was speaking ill of the Gem's history… or even Rose for that matter. There's also not throwing out the idea that he might have seen what the war looked like in Rose's room, but I dunno. I just highly doubt he was actually in that time period at all.
-
I guess i didnt think too much about it but i really do like seeing more amythest and greg dynamic unfold before we finally see what happened between them (foreshadowed by the one episode where they cleaned up gregs storage ). It is pretty neat in regards to that detail with their hair
-
Someone asked a story artist about the age difference and she said it was just shape shifting to fit the style of the 80s so idk
I still think Greg and amethyst probably kissed (or worse??)
-
I can't see Greg/Amethysts relationship as anything other than a strained step-parent thing.
-
I agree with Cyan. Also i only just caught up with this today. Awesome series! Next for me is regular show. At least Steven universe seems to be updating regularly (at least for now) unlike adventure time and worse, gravity falls.

Alot of CN shows got pushed back in March to this month. Probably due to the Steven Bomb. We should be back to regular schedule for AT this week.
Gravity Falls and other Disney shows… I kind of don't understand why the schedule the way they do. -
unlike adventure time
You mean the show that had a 52 episode season last year? That generally only takes a one month break between seasons?
It had a break in September and October (which at 7 weeks is the longest its ever had) , and one in March, but considering the show premiered in April 2010, and its approaching its 200th episode… it's more or less been getting new episodes out 40 weeks a year, (not counting when they air two episodes together) with major breaks only when some other event is going or between seasons.

I don't know what these major events are. Maybe it just feels long but i still remember the last quarter of 2014 where we got none in september, 1 in october, a random string of 4 close together for november and the usual 1 december one. And now it's been a month since the last one (although as Hiroy said it may have been because of Steven Universe? I heard there was a steven week or something but i had not started it then)
-
Yeah… and like I said, the seven week gap last year was the longest gap in the series' history and came after them having run almost a year solid.
Used to be most cartoon shows would run 13 episodes then go to reruns for 9 solid months... but now that they've broken down to 11 minute chunks, they get 26 episodes out of the same production schedule and can place episodes for half a year.
They've only got so many episode on the pipeline, so they have to break occasionally. 26 episodes is only going to cover half the year no matter how you stretch it, but AT has been popular enough that they're greenlighting and pushing through next-seasons almost immediately. Seriously, they've put out about 40 episodes a year, and had a 52 episode order on season 5. That's insane and does not happen in American cartoons, ever.
Generally speaking, its better to break for a solid month then have constant content, (especially during sweeps) than it is to do new, break, new, break, new, new, break, break, etc. If you have new ones coming regularly, its easier to remember to check in than if its totally random... and in CN's case I think they're trying to arrange to have new episodes of 3-5 of their shows on the same night at any given time...
which makes a lot more sense than their usual airings nonsense of stuff like Thundercats or Young Justice or Mysteries Inc. They don't know how to schedule or promote the serious continuity heavy shows, but the 11 minute standalone comedies they seem to have figured out pretty well.
And yes, if you just started Steven last week, then you missed out on the fact they had 6 new episodes in a row in a single week a couple weeks ago.

Disney seems to have lost interest in it except for merchandising purposes but Phineas and Ferb has had forty half-hour episode seasons for three of its four seasons.
That show seems to have proven to executives in general that ordering a bunch of episodes of a successful show isn't a bad idea.

@Cyan:
I can't see Greg/Amethysts relationship as anything other than a strained step-parent thing.
come ON she totally did that awkward blush thing when she looked at the photo of him and Rose in the storage unit. that was definitely 'weird romantic tension history' blush
!
like the only way i can describe this reaction is like… accidentally walking in and seeing your best friend cuddling with a guy you have a crush on. If they were just friends or whatever, it would have been a different sort of look, because it's Amethyst. Like it's POSSIBLE it's just a one sided thing and he's just oblivious but I definitely think there's more going on here.

I can kinda see that being the case. It would've totally been a one-sided thing though. (Knows what that is like >_>;…)
I am finally finishing the rest of season 1, since I always seem to miss it when it comes on CN. Thank goodness for World of Steven Universe.
-
Not a bad episode, although Buck has an interesting take on art.
Next episode is supposedly about the mailman so that should be cool. I like that they are focusing on the side characters that aren't Sadie or Lars.
–- Update From New Post Merge ---
Also, Mayor Dewey is in the running for best dad against Greg.
-
I want to watch bad movies with Mayor Dewey.
-
anyone else thing the art was off, this episode?
-
We're still in technically season 1 territory, damn.
-
-
It's just boarded out by one of the crew with a really distinct way of drawing the characters. Personally I'm not a fan of how stiff and lifeless it is for the most part, but anything to get an episode done I guess. I like that the team has the freedom to be fluid with the drawing style at many different points, so it doesn't appear like the usual cartoon where the models remain consistent at all times.
-
Shirt Club was done by Lamar Abrams and Hellen Jo.
-
wow silver. that was awesome.
Part of why i love the show is the art. the characters all look really charming. I was kinda off put, by how they looked in this episode. :S Sorry, Lamar, and Hellen.
-
They also did The Message. Another one that was offputting with the infamous Pearl model, and well. The characters barely moving and alot of close up face shots. Still, I don't quite mind it as much.
-
That's really interesting. hadn't even really noticed. Neat how the colors and voices pull it all together, and more neat that they let the artist voices speak out rather than just having everything go 100% to model sheets. (I know that'll naturally happen with lead animators, but storyboarders?)
Given those samples, and the episodes he seems to have worked on, I gotta go with Joe Johnston and Jeff Liu as my favorite. (Giant Woman, Steven the Sword Fighter, Lion 2, Lion 3, Steven and the Stevens, Rose's Room, Space Race, Ocean Gem, Garnet's Universe, On the Run, Jailbreak, Story for Steven) If I were to make a list of favorite episodes, most of those would be on there. (Witht he recent Story for Steven taking the cake.)
And many of those are song number episodes. Hrm. Do those have songs because of the storyboarders? Or do they assign them because the episodes have songs?
-
no fair. you've watched through twice. you've had time to form opinions like this. :3
if you asked me, I wouldn't be able to pick. I know there have been moments when i look at the art and i'm just wow. and other times not. i just happened to really notice it for this episode.
-

It should be noted that Steven Universe is a board driven narative. That means the storyboard artist are also the writers of the episode. So I'd say Songs are decided upon during the story break down.

i'm pretty sure adventure time did the same thing too. i want to say it happened a lot in the nicktoons era
-
I'd believe it.
The difference is in Adventure Time there's only a handful of episodes that stand out to me out of like, 200. Mostly the Rebecca Sugar episodes.
-
Yeah. It's pretty easy to notice Sugar's chubby Finn and it's harder to notice the styles of the other boarders outside the writing and maybe a few notable prop/background artists. AT has a somewhat stricter model sheet, tho boarders are free to do whatever they like with a few pointers on what they should do and what they should avoid.
SU on the other hand. Ian on Tumblr said that they and the team are pretty much free to draw models in ways it it works with the scenes. So in single episodes, you'd notice that the hieghts and such aren't always the same. They aren't pushed to.
-
Where television animation is concerned, going off-model is actually more traditional than being on-model.
Just look at Ranger Smith for an extreme example; I don't think Hanna-Barbera's animators even really tried to make him look the same in consecutive appearances until twenty or thirty years after he was created.
-
Well, there's being of model due to being cheap/lazy, and having 5 different studios producing at 65 episodes in a year at once (such as with say, Tiny Toons or Talespin) and then there's specifically and intentionally letting the artists do things in their style.
I suppose the Warner Brothers shorts were pretty distinctive, you could always tell the difference between a Chuck Jones drawing of Bugs Bunny from an Avery or Clampett… but that was more to be expected on those when it was pretty much a head artist and maybe 2 other guys entirely doing a whole short.
-
I notice a lot with how they animate the faces, or little quirks with the eyes. like pearl's swirly eyes last episode.
-
-
Aw, Jamie is adorable. Was the mail lady Sadie's mother? Do we know?
-

Yea, She was next to Sadie in The Return. We also get to see Sour Cream, Onion, and Yellowtail next to each other too.
-
Also Buck and Mayor Dewey as well.
-
Does that mean that Sadie's father is Mr. Smiley? Because I am absolutely on board with that.
-
haha nah i think he's just there like how lars is. I also noticed an eye-patch guy who has not had a proper focus yet. i wonder who he is?
