! Someone for the love of god rescue those Rubies
Them all flying aimlessly, individually through space for all eternity is the saddest thing. Please please please don't make it a "Lol, those wacky Rubies sure are still flying around in crushing loneliness!" joke. I have faith the Crewniverse are better than that, but I've seen far too many series play that card.

! There goes a harsh truth to Steven, his mother was an adept Machiavellianism. Now let this sink in him let's bring the fun non plot based episodes for a while.
Let's just hope he learn from her lessons and be different.Maybe you're just being facetious, but I don't see many Machiavellian tendencies in Rose. She is just, as we should expect from any leader who was highly respected, flawed.
-
! The very nature of gems means that they can be beaten and contained pretty easily and safely, as any killing move just poofs them, as long as you avoid the gem, if Rose actualy HAD to kill Pink Diamond, not just capture her and use her for rasnsom or in a super powerful gem artifact (the true machiavelian move), it means that the continued existence of Pink Diamond had inmediate and irreversible consequences, and poofing her wasn't going to cut it.
! And yeah, you'd only need to poof one or two of the rubies, they should recover them. -
! The Rose Quartz arc phase 2: It's okay to kill so as long as the target is corrupt with power. The Diamonds truly were a piece of shit.
-
Anyone else think the episode was gonna cut with it on steven and got ticked for a second there. It was almost like a fake out

@Mr.:
! The Rose Quartz arc phase 2: It's okay to kill so as long as the target is corrupt with power. The Diamonds truly were a piece of shit.
But we knew that already, Rose doing what she did was still unexpected. I liked how steven came to grips with it at the end though
-
I'm thinking more in a "the ends justifies the means" kind of way, is inevtable that in a war will have casualties but the Rebelion was all about gem's free will, individuality and capacity to change, so for her to took those very things from a gem shows one of two things: it was a must happen scenario or she put the well being of those who agree with her at a higher standard then the rest.
At least the whole Bismuth thing shows that she changed her ways, to some degree. -
@Al!naJames:
! Welp! You were wrong with this one :P
! Yep, I thought so because of the Bismuth ep and now the crystal gems themselves pretty much confirmed it. Looks like Rose wasn't so above shattering if it needed to be done. I'm curious now as to why that was necessary.
-
! The animation was kinda letdown, but if Kindergarten Kid isn't the greatest ode to Wile E. Coyote EVER I seriously don't know from which planet you came from.
-

! As we saw with Steven in the bubble with the Ruby, sometimes as the calls for reason and kind gestures in the world just fall on deaf ears and a moment comes where you can only fight back (Ruby will be just fine as long as she can be found, of course). Interesting though, how Rose's actions have inspired many gems with such intense hatred and Steven has to live with it. I think he feeling that there was probably a better way.
-
And so that marks the end of Season 3 (or, rather, Season 2 as I believe it was originally intended)
! So yeah, of course those last few episodes were really great. We didn't get anything as grand or revolutionary as Jail Break, I suppose. In fact, the last episode was quite calm and introspective by comparison. I guess the two big things were Smoky Quartz and Rose killing Pink Diamond.
! I guess maybe I was hoping for a little more (like, maybe we could've gotten at least one more appearance by Yellow Diamond), but overall I'm still satisfied with what we got. And I have faith that Rebecca and the Crewniverse will bring us more exciting and emotional adventures.
! And I guess we'll just be diving straight into Season34 -
@Long:
But we knew that already, Rose doing what she did was still unexpected. I liked how steven came to grips with it at the end though
! I don't think he did. I think the fact that he now understands his mother was a "murderer", future plot will deal with him shaping his thoughts of his mother on a deeper level and what that means to him now. Until now all he's heard is how strong, wonderful, and brave she was, but this new revelation is probably a pretty big one for Steven, seeing that he's a pacifist.
! But, phew. This season has seen some tremendous growth for Steven, I'm excited to see what happens next. Oh and did I mention Smoky Quartz is amazing? The two arms on one side was weird at first but I kind of like it now.
! Oh one thing, anyone else find it weird when Ruby was like "When I beat Rose Quartz, I'll get my own PEARL!"?
I knew Pearls were like the .. elite servants? But I didn't know they were so sought after. -

I knew Pearls were like the .. elite servants? But I didn't know they were so sought after.! Well not completely but I think its important that he's not looking at her like anakin did to obi wan at the end of episode 3 , mainly what I mean is he understands her actions somewhat instead of just rejecting it completely, Im not pro-violence but I liked that they didnt paint it as Steven saying it's never right " and that he might himself in more mature situations where perfect answers dont exist. I also think garnet reassuring him that it had to be done, settled him a bit as he was absolutrly clueless with literally no context of the event.
! He will question who his mother was more and more but seeing his traits of seeing the best in people and more context I think he will later on accept her decision as the only thing that could of been done but he can come up with a better solution at the end of series when stakes are very high.
! Im glad all this is happening because he does need some form of heaviness to develop him further along his journey from a young kid to a more mature teen, while still keeping his core personality traits, empathy/sympathy and kindness. Kind of like luffy after marineford. -
! So are we likely to see a new opening tomorrow then?
-
On the next episode leak that I saw (kindergarten kid) didn't had the opening nor ending, well know later.
-
! So was main Pearl Pink Diamond's assistant? Assuming that each diamond had their own Pearl.
! Peridot's quickly becoming my favourite gem. I also love Lapis' indifference to everything. -

I knew Pearls were like the .. elite servants? But I didn't know they were so sought after.i think pearls are like status symbols. Like maybe really elegant butlers/secretaries? I think there might be some very subtly implied sexual stuff too. Peri mentioned that pearls are good for "standing around and looking pretty and maybe holding your stuff" or something like that
-
The gems are supposed to be asexual, but maybe something analogous to a sort of exploitation. It seems like they're fancy slaves.
I get the feeling that they would never allow a Ruby to have their own Pearl - a Ruby having those kinds of dreams or grandeur, to aspire beyond their created function are probably the kind of thing that gets them decommissioned.ps - love that Rubye essentially quoted George Dubya

I hear femme presenting agender lesbians used a lot to describe them

This might sound like splitting hairs, but I'd certainly say asexual lesbians rather then agender…because they certainly display characteristics of gender (gender being the social construct of masculine/feminine rather than biology of sex). :)

Well its confusing because asexual relates to preference, and agender relates to gender but they really dont have the difference between woman and men component cause there rocks. Idk thing is complicated but theyve definitely shown to be romantic although one can be aromantic but not asexual or vica versa

There's no way Ruby and sapphire are asexual lol. They were smoochin it up in that one ep. Even Pearl herself is pretty into Rose
Maybe that's a homeworld policy though? Since fusion is so looked down on. This series has a lot of metaphor so when I say pearls have a subtle sexuality, I mean it less like they have sex but more like there's an uncomfortable intimacy there
–- Update From New Post Merge ---
Edit: I do have a sneaking suspicion that peridot might be ace but her awkwardness might just be from being on homeworld for so long

Yeah, there is a difference between aromantic and asexual. They are clearly not aromantic. I know this kind of subject is really annoying to some people, but I've spent a lot of time around people that claim to be asexual but not aromantic, so I take them for their word. They do not have man/woman or male/female, but some gems are clearly more feminine while others are more masculine (Ruby and Sapphire being at opposite ends of that spectrum, for instance) while others are very non-binary, agender.
I guess it is implied that in their projected forms, gems are capable of doing things that humans do that aren't necessary for them (like eat) and I remember reading somewhere that Rose literally created a uterus or something to create Steven (does someone have the link for this and other author comments from the creators on these things?), but I don't know if actual sexual attraction in gems is a thing. Maybe this is one of those things that has been talked about outside of the show. I guess it probably doesn't matter much in the end, but I like talking about nuances of gender and sexuality, and Steven Universe is actually a a really good talking point for the subject, which is partly why it is so cool.
-
It's made loosely so that people can project what they want on it. On the other hand, the show is very overt about expressing sexuality. There are sexual connotations to the fusion dances, the bodily intimacy the characters express, and even a lot of the language and dialogue meant to evoke sexuality. The physical intimacy displayed in parts is definitely meant to be sexual, like Ruby and Sapphire's interactions, the moment shared between Garnet and Peridot, anything between Lapis and Jasper, or a lot of the first experience with Stevonnie. Now, fusion as a whole is a sort of package used to express a lot of things (stuff like Smoky Quartz wasn't made to be read as sexual), but sexuality is definitely in the mix.

I think you're spot on. A lot of it is implied subtext that will purposely always be implied subtext. What is meant to be understood within the show's universe is one thing and what message we're supposed to take from it is another.

I really think that's the only other fandom that I'm into that discuss the gender issue as much as HxH's does/did. Lol

Peridot second best gem confirmed.
Just barely behind Lapis.
(I saw nothing really spoiler tag worthy)
-
Homeworld would be better off if they stopped using Quartz and Ruby scrubs as soldiers and switched to Peridot armies.

I like the combo of relatively low attack power and being made of iron.

This episode was awesome and I'm so happy

I really missed these "monster of the week" episodes. This one gave me Season 1 vibes ^^

That was the best Coyote and Roadrunner short I've seen in years.

Same here but, to be completely honest, that has as much to do with every Roadrunner short since Chariots of Fur being just plain awful as it does with this being a great episode.
-
That was the best Coyote and Roadrunner short I've seen in years.
Am I the only person in the world who watched it without thinking of that. Which is weird since I watched old reruns a lot as a kid and one of my family members has a roadrunner ( the car ).
-
The references were pretty blatant though; the back-firing cannon, the arch gag, and the cliff sequence were the more obvious ones.

About Rose and Pearl there is this 4 month old interview where this tidbit happened:
I also saw this at http://joethejohnston.tumblr.com/post/148745347778/these-are-the-initial-diamond-mural-designs-that-i#notes
!
So Earth wasn't a Pink Diamond colony, but her only colony. It would explain why she didn't yield the planet to the rebels and Rose thought that shattering her was the way to liberate Earth.

Kindergarten Kid: "It'll take more than a mountain falling on me to poof me!!"
Catch and Release: Garnet gently squeezes her and poof!

good episode
pretty good episode -

Their positions in the symbol seem to correspond with the number of planets they have as well; White Diamond is above the rest, Blue and Yellow are equals, and Pink is below.
Considering that they apparently were in the process of setting up Earth as a colony when the Rebellion broke out, I wonder if Pink Diamond was the newest one of the batch and this was her first task or if she only had one planet because her job was strictly to produce soldiers until a planet was used up and then move on to the next target.

She never stated that and garnet has superhuman strength so…

I just realized Natasha Lyonne voiced smokey!! That's 2 OitNB voice actresses!!

Not alot of dancing going on to initiate fusion these days.
I was kinda hoping Kindergarten Kid would result in Peridot poofing and regrowing with an updated design.
-
A lot of accidental fusion happens with Steven. I don't know if it's been talked about before, but it seems like fusion among like-gems just happens at will. It must require a lot more intimacy between two entirely different gems to do it, and dancing is just one of the ways they figured out how to achieve that closeness, but Steven just seems to bond with others really easily when he's feeling emotional (his powers are tied to emotions, after all).
-
Yeah the Rubies and Jasper with the corrupted gem seem to support that theory.
-
When you have only 10 minutes per episode you avoid using up 30 seconds on a repeat dance, or the "recycled transformation sequence" principle. Early on you can do all the dances you like, but once the plot gets serious, that's the first to go.
I do miss them though.
-
^ Yeah, I'm sure that's the REAL reason…you lose a lot of precious episode time if they have to animate a dance, not to mention the action can lose momentum, but it does seem like Steven in particular has a different way of doing things. At least in the last episode's case, Sardonyx'x fusion happened off screen, so you can imagine that they danced and you just didn't see it. :)

Am I the only one having trouble seeing Smoky as a new character? Both her personality and voice looks too much like Amethyst, so I end up always seeing her as Amethyst (I was actually surprised when I found out they are not dubbed by the same person).

Coulor me surprised as well. I think her personality being so close to Amethyst is due the fact that both of them were feeling like worst gem, so the self loathing aspect of Amy's became dominant. But just like Smoky said, she exist for like 10 minutes given time I think she will grow other aspects.

saw Friday's episode….loved it!
! Garnet and Pearl's reaction to Smokey Quartz was beyond priceless!
