You do realise that was the point of his character, right? You were never supposed to like him.
You complaining about him being evil for no reason is like me complaining about everyone else being "good" for no reason. Don't use double standards.

Alright, tell me why he was a "good" villain then? I mean at least try to use logic when saying my opinion is wrong. Just read my posts above if you want to know why Hody sucked as both a physical and intellectual villain. I mean the fact that he was willing to attack his own crew and fellow Fishmen only makes him less realistic. You'd have to be a complete idiot to follow this guy.

Going by that, a LOT of villain plans in One Piece would have fallen apart when you have powerhouses like the admirals, warlords and emperors.
Arlong's fishman empire in the East Blue would have short-lived the moment the Marines caught wind of it.
Crocodile's military state would have been short-lived if the admirals were ever deployed to Alabasta.

It's much simpler than you think. Big Mom protects Fish Man Island in exchange for candy. Hody's men eat her candy, meaning Fish Man Island can't up hold it's end of the deal. Hody takes over Fish Man Island, but can't pay Big Mom. Hody is now an enemy of Big Mom. Hody was screwed on soooooooo many levels and he didn't even know it.

That's a genuinely realistic portrayal of actual racism and the effect it has on the future generations.

Sorry man, but the "Nothing" speech was possibly the laziest thing I've ever seen Oda write in my book. We're just going to have to agree to disagree on this one man. Also Noah was just another one of those cheep tricks I mentioned before. Luffy was also much closer to death quite a few times, such as at Impel Down and Marineford. He needed two very skilled doctors to save him then and not just some extra blood.

sorry guys if I got soooooo off topic about this, I'll stop now. I just really hated The Fishman Island arc.

I haven't read this whole debate and don't plan to, but I do want to briefly address the idea that Hody is a bad villain because he was "bad for the sake of being bad".

Hody was an example of the long term effects of racism. When you grow up with racist parents, some of that racism tends to rub off on you. Second generation racists don't necessarily have any real reason for being racist other than being informed by those that brought them up that the specific race was "bad". Hody was a pure representation of these long term effects; the plot twist that he wasn't directly affected by humans shows just how bad racism can be. It can create a jaded generation (Hody's accomplices that grew up with him, too) simply from the previous generation's strongly held beliefs. Since the theme of the arc was the negative effects of racism, this worked perfectly to show the worst possible effect– racism that wasn't actually caused by anything the race had done-- a sort of blind racism, if you will. In modern real world society, this is the worst sort of racism-- people who hate a whole race even though they haven't been directly wronged by that race. This also worked well with one of One Piece's consistent themes- how those from your past can have a significant stake in crafting your personality. All of the straw hats have back stories with father/mother figures. Hody has this sort of thing too, but it made him a worse person rather than a better one.

Fishmen Island had other problems though-- the fight was way too long, the villain wasn't physically threatening enough, the plot was fairly dull (not as many plot twists as usual Oda), the side theme of drug usage distracted from the central theme of racism. But some things about the arc were very successful- the theme of racism and how Hody fits into it, the flashback and development of Arlong, post-time skip quirks, the last few chapter set ups with Big Mom and Pluton, etc.

tl;dr: One Piece is brilliant, but no work of art is perfect.

I just got around to finishing Voyage Two and noticed a pretty big error on episode 359's English audio track. The sound effects of Sanji coughing up blood and dropping the knife are missing, and the sound effects of Sanji getting stabbed and Absalom stepping in the pool of blood are different (the stab is a kick/thud rather than a slice, and the footstep is missing the splash sound). I'm guessing that FUNimation somehow got the sound effects from the censored Japanese TV version, despite the visuals and Japanese audio track being the uncut DVD versions.

I wasn't trying to put the blame on FUNi (as presumably they just used what Toei supplied), but it's still a pretty noticeable error in the dub no matter whose fault it is. It hardly ruins the scene, but it's still distracting.
I'm kind of suppressed that the dubbing materials for the TV version would be made in the first place, as I was under the impression that the edits were made just for the original airing.
I wonder, did the other dubs use the TV or DVD version, and did they have the same audio error?

Did you order it from RightStuf or another retailer? It seems that mine on RightStuf also says "On Order from Manufacturer" However, after doing a little research it seems that some retailers do indeed have it already… So congrats for getting it first, lol.

yea I should also be getting voyage 3 either tomorrow or tuesday. If I was looking at it correctly, Best Buy already had it available since Dec 23rd, so I bought it yesterday and it was shipped today.

Although it's a bit anticlimactic, since the dub has already been released online, and we've seen the juicy bits.

I was wondering about that….still, though, I think there are far more "adult" anime fans out there than I think we would give credit for. Adults won't be as open about something that is viewed by some as a kiddie thing, but con demographics, while not the best or most accurate means of sampling, are probably much closer to being a representative one than we realize, thus, a quantitative component of a theory that adults make up most, or very close to most, of the anime market.

I would have to agree with you. Also many of us were teenagers when the show started, so by now majority of fans are the ones that grew up being fans and are adults now.

Nice packaging, plus I like the stickers. Nothing amazing, but it's pretty swell. I'm gonna go ahead and guess that Zoro's wanted poster will be in the next collection box.

Well I just got my collection box set today, and man, I think its great. The box is really nice and looks awesome, and I really do like the wanted poster that comes with it. I only wish it was a little easier to get the DvD boxes out, but other than that it is great.

I like this, because eventually, on-screen text will become very important, and thus far, FUNi hasn't been hard-subtitling the episodes they're sending to Toonami.

As for the text boxes, I see no advantage to the Japanese text being in the box, so it sounds only beneficial to me.

For real? Thats awesome. That always bothered me. And, as said, japanese text isn't subtitled on Toonami's tapes, so this will help with that.

You missed it; I voiced this earlier. Different directors make a difference, but not a hugely substantial one.

Yeah, I agree with Zephray. I don't think there are necessarily any bad directors but I've always found Mike to be the one to bring out some of the best in the VAs, makes sense that he's so invested in every aspect of the series.
