Mine is coming a day early, too. Awesome.
-
Received Z (and Hyrule Warriors) in the mail!
-
Just finished watching it. Pretty great overall.
-
Funimation is selling Film Z at AWA this weekend early. Just picked my copy up, gonna watch it tonight.

Out of curiosity, were they also selling S6V1?

I mostly like Kizaru's voice. It sounds pretty good, but there isn't enough quirk and all of his lines are delivered too quickly. Though that last qualm may have more to do with the animation than the VA. I'm sure Mike will straighten that out when he actually comes onto the show. I missed him dragging out his last syllables and his Japanese VA's high pitched "oh!"
Joel MacDonald did an alright job directing this, but I feel that some things could have been touched up a little bit; McFarland still feels like the superior director to me.
Doesn't help that I just like Strong World more. Shiki's VA was one of the best in all of Funimation's One Piece, imo; I can't get enough of his voice. Zed sounded good, but it wasn't as distinguished as I'd have liked it to be. It had a hint of an accent, but overall sounded too much like the average tough guy voice. I also wasn't as impressed by Zed's character as people built him up too much– his character was completely fleshed out within a two minute summary via Garp's exposition. That left me underwhelmed, since I thought they'd take their time fleshing him out as the film went along. I did enjoy the ending, though; that final fight scene fleshed him out a bit more.

While the original fits more I did find myself enjoying Hurd's take on Kizaru more as the film went on. It'll definitely be interesting to see his take on the character when we actually get to some episodes with him.

That final battle is awesome though. Ordered mine on Rightstuf yesterday, and it told me at 12 today that my order had been received, so I'll need to see when it gets to me. I'm doing a film review for school, and I wanted to review Z in honor of its western release, so hopefully I get it on Monday (Project's due on Tuesday).

Anybody want to post clips please?
-
Loved everything about it. Seeing the movie in crisp blu-ray just cemmented it for me…. this movie is leagues better than Strong World. Just... everything. The production values are just amazing and the dub was superb. The interactions between the crew had some nice dialog and the marine theme was beautifully translated. Alot of different important character voices too, and they all sound great. Kizaru doesnt sound AS slow but his voice sounds great.
Anyways enough fangasming. Lmao I loved it.
PS: The cover is way better than Strong World's and I liked that they included all the japanese commercials for the movie as extras. The Sakura Con extra with Patrick Seitz was meh, though. Seemed kinda random and had nothing to do with the movie.
-
Can somebody post a clip of Kizaru's and Akainu's voices?

Oh, so the Japanese trailers wasn't a Rightstuf/Amazon mistake, sweet! Now that's a bonus feature. The Patrick Seitz thing is such obvious filler. More things like the trailers please! What made this a better cover than Strong World's? Seems like Funimation is getting better at making these Movies, although Movie 8 is still the best presentation wise (ironic seeing as how it's seen as one of the worst)

Out of curiosity, were they also selling S6V1?
Mah, I asked. Guy mentioned the exclusive deal with Amazon so I don't they can physically sell it until release date. Even at cons.
-
The cover has this type of glossy black kinda pop-up finish that looks really nice. Alot of movie covers do this technique if you're still confused. Also, its style is its own instead of carrying over from the Collections scheme.
-
Yeah the packaging is sleek and very well done. It looks great all around. I just got mine, and browsed through a couple scenes real quick to hear some of the dub voices. From what I've seen Kizaru doesn't sound as slow and easy as Ishizuka, but it's a very fitting performance nonetheless. I'll most likely be watching the whole thing later tonight, and post my thoughts on it afterward.
-
It is weird because I love his voice, but the voice actor and director screwed up in not dragging out his last syllables. There as brief moments when you see the character with his mouth still open after a word and yet he isn't saying anything. It's like the actor decided to straight up ignore the character quirk.
–- Update From New Post Merge ---
Someone should post on his facebook: "you're perfect as Kizaru's, but..."
-
No one's mentioned it, but the English dub pronunciation of vivre card is "veever".
Kizaru's English voice does stress a line once or twice, but it's not very noticeable. Hopefully McFarland can bring out the best in him when we get to Sabaody.
-
Received Z (and Hyrule Warriors) in the mail!
Same for me yesterday…well I picked up HW at Gamestop.
-

I just re watched that part because I didn't remember it being pronounced like that. It sounded like he said "veevreh" card to me, but I couldn't really tell.
-
This is odd. The Japanese translations were not done by FUNimation, but provided by Toei themselves.
Haki was never once mentioned in the movie. Luffy's ability was referred to only as "The Conqueror's Spirit".
I'm still trying to adjust to Andrew Love as Akainu.
-
Hey quick question, did Funimation translate the Japanese text into English this time?
-
Just picked up season 6 and film z today now my Sunday morning is going to be fun
-
Yes, the opening and closing credits are in English.
-
So how bout that song at the end credits? No changes there?
-

When it premiered at one of the cons, Shift posted that Avril's songs were present.
On the subject of songs, Openings 12 and 14 are absent from Crunchyroll.
-
Both of Avril's songs were there.
-
So it sounds like Funimation has fixed most of the complaints that people had with Strong World, right?
-
Got news that my Film Z from Rightstuf arrived home yesterday! :D

Sweet, thanks for the response.
Too bad about the crunchyroll thing though, and I was meaning to check that myself. Guess I got my answer.

Something interesting I noticed for Funimation's online streaming of One Piece:
Episodes 337-348 (S6V1) are available for members to stream dubbed on 11/04/14. The Amazon release is 9/30, but the general release is not until 11/18/14.
Episodes 349-360 (S6V2) are available for members to stream dubbed on 11/11/14. The general release is 11/18/14, meaning the episodes will be available 1 week before release. In the past, Funimation has made dubbed OP episodes available to members on or after the release date, but never before (they usually stream dubbed episodes before home release for many shows including Fairy Tail).
Although we are used to getting OP releases earlier than the street date due to Rightstuf, I think it is pretty interesting for Funimation to switch it up and make the episodes officially available dubbed online before the street release.

Remember, FUNimation made that streaming deal to be able to put One Piece episodes they license for DVD before they licensed season 6 earlier…that must be the case for why they are doing this.
Crazy to think we will finally see season 6 next week as well.

Why is it so crazy, we should have seen season 6 nearly 5 months ago. I'm just thankful it's finally here.

I watched Z last night, FUNi did a very good job with the dub.
! The Straw Hat cast was superb as usual, and the new voices were great as well, in particular Jeremy Schwartz. I loved how he could go from sounding very soft and comforting to terribly intimidating as the character. Ray Hurd as Kizaru was okay; like I (and others) have mentioned, he doesn't really drag out the sentence dialog, but I have faith that Mike or Joel will be able to help him blend with the character more. Lauren Landa was spot-on as Ain in my opinion. She sounds like the voice that would come to mind if you were reading a manga version of the film, truley well done. For Bins I honestly would not have been able to tell that that was Mercer if not for him being credited, which it was kind of cool hearing his voice in a way much different from Leon Kennedy or Levi Ackerman. I have to say I was very pleased with everything done on this production – and a special shout out to Jason Douglas' Kuzan, which is always great, and a real treat in this film.
-
I agree about Kizaru. There wasn't anything necessarily bad about his voice, but it didn't retain his quirk of dragging out words and sounding lazy. Not complaining though. I thought Z's voice was awesome. Also I actually liked that the marine said the power of the conquerors spirit rather than conquerors haki, I feel like it makes more sense in english and sounds cooler.
-
Now that I'm thinking about it…. its entirely possible that they tried to replicate the same effect but it just didnt work out. Sometimes what works in Japanese doesnt work in english. Just a thought.
-
I see what happened with Kizaru as being a result of them not being too familiar with the character overall, since they have probably not dubbed any episodes with him yet. Doing a movie that takes place quite a ways into the future of the series has the potential to cause problems like this. And I know they probably should have been able to tell Kizaru had a slower speech style, but admittedly I can see how it might not have been as noticeable within the context of the movie. In the Sabaody arc (and even the Whitebeard War arc) they really stress the fact that Kizaru can be somewhat slow-witted and easy-going, so his dragged out speech style is more noticeable. His most notable moment in the movie was during an intense, high-speed battle against an opponent he seemed to actually take seriously, so I can see how his slower speech style might have gone unnoticed in context.
Once we get to some episodes with Kizaru in it I’m sure Hurd’s performance will be fixed to better reflect his character, so I wasn’t too concerned by it. His take on him wasn't bad overall, so I'm sure it'll work in the future.
-
I'm actually really suprised no one has done an unboxing of Film Z yet. Kind of expected someone to do one by now.

There has been one person…
-
The pictures from the movie that they put on the back were ok, I thought they could have chosen some better ones, but it doesn't matter. I really liked that matte finish they put on the slip cover, nice touch.
-
I think the spine of the film looks cool on its own, but I just wish they would pick a layout for the spines and stick with it. It's annoying how the collections, voyages, and now individual films have all different sides.
And yes, Mike will fix the voice, so long as he notices it and doesn't feel like he needs to stick to the film's version for continuity.
-
I think it would've been awesome if they had done a commentary for the film. I don't think FUNimation has done too many movie commentaries, the only ones that come to mind are the Fullmetal Alchemist films. Even so, I feel like there would be a lot of interesting stuff to talk about.
-
I saw my copy of the movie earlier today. I really loved the job that Funi did. I also wish Kizaru had more of his speech quirks in his dialogue, but they'll fix it for the series. Kizaru's and Zed's Vas were great, and it was nice to hear more of Brook and Akainu.
All the Straw Hats were excellent as usual.
! With the age change, Luci and Brina did great but I really like how Stephanie did the slight adjustment for 18 yr old Robin.
I thought one of the best performances for a secondary character in the movie was Jason Douglas's Aokiji. I can't wait to hear more from him in the series.Liked the embossing on the packaging. Wished there was more of an effort on have commentary for the special features too.
All in all, really enjoyed Film Z.
Off Topic Easter Egg:
! Did anyone else notice that the sea train light signal had Los Angeles, CA written on it? That stood out to me for some reason.
-
my order for Film Z and Season 6 just went into preparing for shipment status on amazon, hopfully i'll get it soon enough.
-
Does anyone wanna isolate the English Version of "Ocean's Guide" that plays during the final battle?
-
My copy of S6V1 (and Persona 4 Arena Ultimax :P) shipped out Sunday and are now only 1 state away, with expected delivery tomorrow; I'm so excited! I probably won't have time to watch the episodes until Friday, but still excited for the release to finally come in after so long without (canon) OP
-
One thing I think the dub of Film Z did better was the Straw-Hat's younger voices. They sound more believable.
-
It's been since like March. So excited to get girlfriend back into the cannon.
-
So excited to get Season 6 Voyage 1 tomorrow :D :D :D
-
I'm honestly not sure what I want to watch first. I think I'll probably start off with Season 6 because of the new characters and such, and then I'll finish off with Film Z for a good end note. Since I've already seen Film Z subbed I won't be as eager to watch it for the first time like I was with Strong World.
