I think I'll also hold off on getting Season 6 Pt 1 in September and just preorder it along with Pt 2 with RightStuf so I can get the FUNi sale discount. I've waited this long so I figure I can easily hold out till Nov. (plus I get a fun 24 ep Thriller Bark marathon when they both come in at the same time so yay!)

Can't believe how fast it took for Z to get dubbed, seemed like only yesterday it was out in thetares in Japan, sheesh.

I find it rather ironic that Funimation gave Strong World a random purple color theme, and Film Z, which has a red colored theme to it as seen by the battle outfits at the end, doesn't appear to have any sort of colored theme attached to it. Although this is because Funimation was definitely modeling Strong World after the Collections, as seen by the character picture on top and the colored bar at the bottom. Heck, even the discs resemble the Collections if you compare them. Can't believe that we're in the home stretch with this release, I mean heck, Film Z comes out at the end of the month! Can't wait!!

Thats because Amazon got exclusive for the first few weeks for Season 6, Part 1 and Collection 10. They are also doing it with the newest volume of Fairy Tail as well.

FUNimation gets unedited versions of most things. There have been plenty of anime that FUNi has done where the Japanese TV Broadcast was edited and FUNimation got the uncut versions (Mostly it's the ecchi stuff they put out, but still)
Also, most other Licensors got the uncut version IIRC. I know Germany did.
I'd say you can pretty much count on us getting the uncut one. I'm about 99% certain of it, but obviously as I'm not holding the thing in my hand, I can't guarantee it.

Bah. We're in the waiting period for the new film, so, as usual, let the rightstuf refresher begin!
Meanwhile, I rationed that last set so well that I still have the chopperman episode to watch. And I really feel like I need to see SW again. I only watched it once or twice when it came out, but Shiki's VA was so damn good. I can't imagine Z coming close.

I'm honestly not sure whether or not I'll want to watch Film Z or Voyage 1 first when they arrive in the mail at the end of the month. Obviously Film Z is one of the best, if not the best, One Piece movies, but Voyage 1 has the official introduction to Brook in it. I'm excited to get my hands on both, to say the least.

I'm personally more excited for the voyage; can't wait to hear all of the new voices. The voyage also has a hell of a lot more content. I'll be getting Z first though, regardless. I've also never seen film z, so that produces a weird mixture of anxious curiosity yet also not caring that much.

Unfortunately I wasn't able to see the movie at Otakon, I have heard nothing but good things for this film, OPP talked briefly about their thoughts on the film's dub, and I believe a few members of arlong park forums saw the dub. I thought I remembered someone posting OPP's Twitter/Tumblr (I forget which one) thoughts on the film, and everyone I've heard said he was fantastic, but no one has compared him to Scott McNiel, so hopefully someone who saw it can tell us how Z' VA did. Also, apparently Funimation actually translated the opening credits this time! Which is good because I wasn't a huge fan of them being left unaltered (I'd like to know who worked on the movie). I also wish that Funimation had bothered to translate the character introductions in SW, because that was hard to read, but there's no scenes like that in Film Z, so we don't have to worry if they'll translate them or not.

Do Avril Lavigne's songs still play during the credits? Or have they been replaced with a track from the film's soundtrack like SW?

I've heard from multiple people and sources that the Avril Lavigne songs have been left alone. Probably was easier for Funimation to get since she's, a) popular in America, and b) Sony of Japan handled the soundtrack for this movie. (Which is probably why most of the Film Z songs haven't been used in the anime compared to the other movies).

It's not really about the song itself it has more to do with regardless of quality many of us would prefer the commercial releases to have the same content as the Japanese releases. Sing song rights have been an issue since Season 4 you're going to find this come up everytime a new vocal song appears in the series.

As o-chan said, I'd rather the releases stay as close to the Japanese version as possible, and would rather the credits not just be a reused OST from the film.

It's nice that they managed to get the rights to include the songs, but at the end of the day I don't really give a damn; it was silly when the Avril songs were in the Japanese credits and it'll be just as silly in the dub.

to people like me it makes all the difference,the music is part of the experience too (even the closing music).
its like say if i were to have a choice between the sh#tty bruce falkner music,or the original score.Sure it may not be so bad,but id prefer to get the same experience as the japanese edition does.

Seriously guys…. 80% of the j-pop OP usually uses is the same ol' shit Avril and other artists from our end do.... its just in Japanese.
Don't see why you guys can like those, but then act like the Avril songs are garbage.

The only reason why it's more tolerable to us is most likely because those songs are in Japanese and since most OP fans in the west don't speak fluent Japanese we aren't able to hear the meaning behind the cheesy lyrics without reading a literal translation along with it. We're also more familiar with Avril Lavigne than we are with most of the J-Pop groups so her work sort of sticks out like a sore thumb in comparison to the other acts that have composed songs for the series.

Ok, now, I have to inject an opinion here with my musician hat on….
That the lyrics are in Japanese I don't want to say shouldn't matter at all, but to me, voice is just as much as an instrument as the violin, or piano. The key to lyrics is the way they harmonize with the non-verbal music. This is why I think Funimation has done such a great job with the opening and endings that they have done. They have chosen a great vocal compliment to sing the lyrics, thus making it sound as if it was originally in English, rather than Japanese. And that's what music should be.

Agreed entirely. Has anyone actually read the lyrics of the Japanese theme songs seriously? Most of them are just horrid cheesy.

Precisely. It's that whole post-modernist crap. The actual words themselves shouldn't be held to a specific meaning in and of themselves but rather when the statement itself, taken as a whole, is interpreted that you can still get an accurate translation though the "word for word" translation may be different. It's but one of the reasons I can't stand the "subs are better" argument, particularly from those who don't even understand Japanese.

Oh, I'm not denying that FUNimation does a good job on dubbing the songs; they're all very well adapted and don't just come across as roughly translated renditions of the openings and endings. The lyrics come across as being much cheesier when looking at a literal translation, which results in lyrics with no actual rhyme scheme or balance. The songs may still be cheesy in English but the way FUNi adapts them makes them seem much less so.

I don't think "How You Remind Me"'s lyrics are "cheesy". It's cliché, sure, but songs (in Japan) that have to do with broken relationships are rarely ever present in anime, even less so for shonen.

Since it's part of the TV series I'd assume we'll get it once FUNi reaches that point. Plus, I'm sure they would've included that announcement in their press release.

It isn't included in the tv series; it only came out on cell phones in Japan. You're probably thinking of the "Z's Ambition" arc, which is a part of the episode count. We'll be getting that eventually, no doubt. Still quite a ways off; it'll feel pretty random and late when it comes out on the box sets.
Bah. I know film Z isn't due out from rightstuf for probably another week or two, but I can't stop checking.

It came out on the Japanese DVD as well, but only in the armored edition (Limited Edition).

Ah thanks, that was it. We're probably not going to get it then because of Toei's crippling fear of reverse importation, but still, that would make for a pretty awesome limited edition set from Funimation. I think the only other thing we got "Limited Edition" in regards to One Piece was the booklet of all the covers. (Did anyone actually get that? Didn't know it existed until the thing was already over. :sad:)

I got it. It was just a small booklet of all of the s1-3 covers. The booklet was small enough to slide inside of a DVD box, so it's not like you could use them as posters or anything. I mean, the bluray/dvd combo sets are the closest we've gotten to limited edition. It sure would be nice for them to include a full season box with the first voyage of every season. They used to do that for other shows, but I guess since the DVDs are already in boxes it would be redundant to put those boxes in more boxes.

Yeah, doesn't make a lot of sense when you think about it. Kinda hopping Funimation makes another booklet with all the covers of the first half of the story or something. Cannot wait for Film: Z to come out, I accidentally ordered a textbook I didn't need and it's past the due date to return it, but Amazon will accept it for $35, so I'll sell it to them and get Film: Z with that money instead.

They announced Cowboy Bebop for December early. I guess December solicitations won't be up until late next week. I'm praying for a double release on the same day; those are awesome.

No one knows anything because there's nothing to know. It'll probably be years before they even consider it.

^ This. On the off chance they did get licensed, they would get brand new dubs though. Wouldn't be possible or make much sense to try to fit the old recordings with brand new animation, even if it's based on the same storylines. It wouldn't fit as well.

It would be like Funimation trying to squeeze the old dbz dub onto kai. They'll end up redubbing it. By the way isnt France releasing all of the episodes of on DVD? Hoping that since Funimation subbed 3D2Y they'll start to go after non-epiosde related stuff. Theyre doing the movies which is great. I wonder what theyll do after film: Z comes out?

They're more or less aware of what films the fans really want to see. It's just a matter of when for the films. Whereas the episode specials are a matter of 'if'. Honestly, I doubt they'll dub the episode specials.
