I'm just glad nothing really bad is happening right now with everyone there.
Alright whose going to be underwater for the next few days

Ummm, maybe you missed the part where I died.
pretty offended tbh -
I'm in Montreal

Also Quebecois pride themselves on being different than the rest of anglo North America

I'm currently experiencing intermittent flickering. Which is annoying because it keeps turning the TV off.
I'm also on the website for our electric company, which gives hourly updates of where power outages are occuring and when they're expected to be back online.
-
Hmmm a hurricane is coming? lets just leave this crane looming precariously over the city, yep.
-

That crane is the sort of crane that is built alongside the building that's going up with it and takes a very, very long time to take down. It wasn't something that could've been quickly disassembled…
...Supposedly. Apparently the company that put it up is notoriously cheap, and taking that crane down would've been notoriously not, so take it with a grain of salt.

You wouldn't understand how this "tall buildings" thing works. It's a bit more complex than that.
-
So begins the legend of the lost sunken city of "Atlantic" and it's mythical casinos and surprisingly convenient proximity to New York
-
-
Atlantic City is definitely under water. No power in lower Manhattan and I'm pretty sure the MTA is flooded.
Is that crane still up?
e: Yes, but barely! http://www.cbsnews.com/video/watch/?id=1n&tag=mncol;lst;6 -
So apparently the barrier of sand and the wealthy was stronger than I gave it credit for, because the power/internet on my end has been stable since lunch and none of the weak-ass birch trees in the front yard have fallen over yet.
-
Nothing has happened here at all lol.
I think there's an evacuation of beach side areas in the golden coast area + Bridgeport. But I don't live in any of that so not even my town.
That's about it. Powers still here.
Irene was worse for us tbh. -
power went out once here but came right back on. it's pretty quite, most of the sirens that were going off during the day have stopped.
-
To be fair, the people strongly affected by this wouldn't be posting. It's pretty bad in parts of NYC for example.
NYSE flooded
-
I'm getting conflicting reports on whether or not NYSE is flooded. A bit of confusion there.
Ground Zero is flooded.
[hide][/hide]
Also, parts of West Virginia have been buried under 14 inches of snow. And snowfall is being reported in Ohio now too. -
It's been rather quiet ever since four or so where I am. The wind doesn't seem to be gusting anymore, and there's little rain from what I can tell. Classes are canceled tomorrow as well.
I've seen photos of the New York flooding, and it look pretty crazy. Not like what you see in those disaster movies, but it's surreal all the same.
-
All right, NYSE wasn't flooded. That's good.
-
Seems like we're in good shape, here in North Jersey (knock on wood).
That crazy wind took down a couple of trees, blew out transformers, and who knows what else, but the rain hasn't been too bad, and – for now -- it seems we have power.
But we'll see. Hope you all escaped the worst of it - some of my friends haven't been so lucky. One got a tree through the roof (they weren't home though). -

fairplay, though im still surprised they couldn't have fastened it or secured it more. i guess the question is how long does the main horizontal bar take to deconstruct and how much notice did they have. im just glad nobody has been injured by falling debris from it yet.

i swear you think england is the shire. we have tall buildings….i think. >.>

so 13deaths so far…
No electricity for around half a million people in New York and they had to move a whole hospital as the emergency power didn't work... seriously. What a shame.
but all in all you could say it's fine, I guess? Or better than expected. Here's hoping.
-
It seems that just over seven million people have no power right now. That's like, 2% of the country, isn't it?
-
they now talked about 13million people without electricity..
-
My university's still having classes tomorrow, why? And Governor Patrick has already declared a state of emergency too. Heck, even the federal government's closed tomorrow.
Sandy will definitely be worse than Irene. I've experienced more hurricanes up here than in Houston.
While I'll admit Sandy is much worse than Irene, It's nothing compared to the shit that's hit us down south.
regardless, I hope everyone is safe and STAYS safe.
-
My father has a generator running, my mother has power, and I have school today.
I remain unconquered and unbowed.
-
No cancellations here, either. Hell, I even see blue skies. At least Irene was kind enough to stop by an say hi, even if it felt a bit impersonal. Sandy straight up ignored us.
-
Blue skies and sunshine.
This storm was a total non-event here.
-
And of course, CNN is treating the whole thing like it's the apocalypse….:getlost:
CNN, just die already.
-
Anyone know how Baltimore's doing ? Got family there.
-

Don't be so glib: some people are in a real bad way because of this storm.
-
Hm…..all of the schools are closed in the area, including my brother's and sister's (for the second day now). Bridges and tunnels are shut down too.
As for my actual home, I've got no colateral damage and power is on. It turned off a couple of times last night, but it never stayed off for more than three minutes. There's less wind today, but.....it's still freezing.
-
@No:

I've also got family in Baltimore, as such I've been texting my cousin non-stop since I got up today (she's keeping me pretty updated with their current situation) and from what I understand everything is okay, though they did get hit hard. A large portion of its residents are without power.
-
Apparently areas near me got pounded, and I can already tell some big trees came down. But I saw little to nothing otherwise. Schools open again tomorrow.
-
School's cancelled for us tomorrow as well. Three days. It's pretty crazy.
And my town's telling folks to stay the hell inside for Halloween: can't imagine what trick-or-treating'd look like with whole towns blacked out and trees and powerlines down everywhere.
They're telling everyone to push back Halloween stuff till Friday cause they sure as shit don't want kids out there tomorrow. -

Have to admit, that is a really cool picture…at least there's no one down there :P
Edit: Aw what the heck I deleted my post by accident D: Anyways I was just saying I was surprised we got hit by anything in my part of Canada (North East Ontario) But looking at the satellite images, I realised we are just at the tail end of the storm. Right in the middle of the tip. A few sheds got knocked over and I heard about a couple of trees falling on cars, but it seems alright now. Lots of rain but it should turn into snow soon..which is why I got my winter tires put on today. Even just driving to school I had to fight the steering wheel on the highway against the wind...but my SuV is really sensitive to wind that way :/
Stay safe everyone! Watch out for flying signs...that would be my biggest fear :[
-
Talked with my folks in Northern Virginia today. They made it through just fine. No power outages or nothin'.
Of course, my sympathies to those who were effected by the hurricane.
-
Things are much worse than it seemed. The houses across the park from me have lost power. I didn't notice during the day, but at night it was super strange. I've never seen things in the direction just being…dark. Almost no lights at all. There's a ton of people over there, I live in fairly dense suburbs, not the woods. But it didn't really feel like it.
Walking around there were some downed trees, and some downed power lines. Some people apparently got electrocuted while out for a walk earlier today.
Down by the Sound, man I don't wanna know. The news has shown video from the shore neighborhoods around here, and there's people in boats in stuff.
New York City/Long Island and Jersey got it even worse by the sound of it. I know I was joking about Long Island being CT's meat shield before but it's true. If we didn't have them, we'd be like New Jersey is right now. Which spooks me.A real Tri-State Area calamity.
--- Update From New Post Merge ---
Funny story though, because we're northeasterners here's how it is. The pizza place at the town green had a generator and was filled with people. Motherfucker.
-
Apparently 80% of the island was out of power today. Rocky Point, by my grandpa's, certainly was. No traffic lights were working.
Shirley was dead, but that's expected because it's Shirley. Ditto for Riverhead I think.
-
@Cyan:
Shirley was dead, but that's expected because it's Shirley.
I hope shirley is a place.
-
shirley is a burned-out ghetto that only gets worse the farther you go in it
-
People are starting to talk about creating some kind of Netherlands esque infrastructure around here to avoid this shit, since it's starting to become more common.
Also Andrew Cuomo is unquestionably running in 2016 for president.
-
The amount of coverage this is getting in the backwaters of the globe that is India was hillarious, it's bordering on the irritating now. 14 people died. Jesus Christ. In the meantime, 80 people died in sectarian violence in Myanmar. And not a single fuck was given in India.
New Yorkers, if you see an Indian woman with a mic and a camera in tow running around asking you stupid questions, please bitchslap her for me. She's the goddamn NDTV reporter saying stuff like, "Legendary spirit of New York" when people tell her that they'll live through this with a bemused expression on their faces when they respond to her frenzied questions. -

A STORM IN THE MEGALOPOLIS?? FORGET MAOISTS, PAKISTAN, ROHINGYA, POVERTY, AND MONSOONS!!! -
I always look at the clouds in satellite images, searching for potential hurricanes in weird places, like the west coast of Africa. xD
I will most likely not be a meteorologist when I grow up…

At least 65 were dead in just the Caribbean. The infrastructure damage alone is going to be terrible for NYC.

I think more people are killed in horrible domestic things every day in India.
-

Hell. More people die from gun-related deaths each day in the U.S.
