Usopp/Ussop?

Hey everyone, fin fish just brought up an interesting question off the boards…I notice a lot of people spell Usopp's name Ussop. Is Ussop an alternate spelling in some part of the world I don't know about? A different way of romanizing it? Just a weird, universal typo?

I'm not getting on anyone's case, personally spelling doesn't bother me, unless someone is trying to insist that's Oda's official english version. (As we have for Luffy and Zoro via their wanted posters.) And I'm not telling anyone to change their spelling... But I am curious as to where that spelling comes from, since I'm fairly certain the "official" romanization is Usopp (correct me if I'm wrong!) My katakana sucks, so I won't even give what I see when I read his name.

ウソップ = u + so + (tsu = character used to denote double consonant) + pu = usoppu

And in merchandises it's written Usopp. I think it's just a universal mistake because in English word/names, double p at the end is rarely found.

Ah, thanks for the official romanization! Yeah, It's most likely just a universal mistake, but someone please enlighten me if their is a OP version that uses that spelling.

O so theres 2 "P"s and 1 "S" in Usopp, K thanks, now I never have to confuse myself as to how to spell Usopp again

When I first started posting here, I always wrote "Ussop." The explanation (if you can call it that) was that I knew there were two consonants together, but just forgot which consonant it was.

The LongNose was first introduced as Usop (one P) in the Indonesian translation. Adding another P sounds funny at first ^^

I've never even seen anyone spell it "Ussop" before. As a side note, in Japanese the accent is on the second syllable (like uSOPPu), but in the dub, they put the accent on the first syllable (like UU-sopp). It's just easier for the average English speaking tongue, I guess.

Many of the manga chapters I've downloaded call him Ussop or Usop. Rarely do they call him Usopp, for whatever reason.

I love the fact that these guys make OP accesable to us who cannot read Japanese or even tolerate 4KIDS (or even Viz), but they must learn to spell better. Besides the Usop/Ussop mistake, they constantly spell "lose" "loose".

But that's the only time I've ever seen Usopp misspelled in that fashion, regardless. I've never really seen people refer to him that way, I always figured it was just a mistake in the way it was translated.

I have far more problems with the millions of spellings of Wapol, Waipa and Eneru's name (s)…

Well, apparently the right way is Enel (or at least that's the best bet), but I am still confused about Waipa/Wiper/Viper. :wacko:

I recommend checking Ivotas' Character Names FAQ for spellings. It's not perfect (for some names, we can only have the best guess because there's no canon spelling), but a lot of the names are correct.

And it's "Wapol", based from his miniseries (chapter 259) where it shows his company name "Wapol Konzern".

It's just a mis-translation. Translating Japanese characters into roman letters can be tricky. Basically that's how it sounds when it's pronounced. But because of the way it was spelled in the ministory, you can see it's Wapol.

i think the best case for usopp is that his dad's name is yasopp and that's been romanized by oda (on his headband).

Yeah, that's true. It's definately "Yasopp" on his headband in the manga, although I've seen it misspelled "Yassopp" in the anime. Watch the picture for "Run, Run, Run" ending credits. ;)

I've never selt it USSOP either but on sky digital when u pressed the 'I' for info on Dubbed One Piece they called him USSOP for awhile then made it USOPP so I was thinking it was random typos…

I know somwhere they translated his name to Lysop?

I think that's the German version, if I'm not mistaken.

funkyfunkyusopp, Lysop is his name in the German version. I'm guessing that they want to preserve the pun in Usopp's name ('uso' is 'lie'), but not sure because I don't know what 'lie' in German is.

I have no idea XD then again a few of my non anime friends thought he was a really ugly girl.

Oh, I meant in what way did they show him as a girl…did they refer to him as "she" or something?

And I know some people who assumed Usopp was female too. I drew a picture of him on my leftover food box with an ink pen, and everyone I was sitting with thought he was a wierd looking girl. I guess it's the hair and the lips and the eyelashes, but I still don't think he looks feminine. Not even when he's purposely drawn feminine in those nutty yaoi doujins. XD

If you only have a headshot of Robin, I can see some people mistaking her for a guy. Especially since she's 6 feet tall.

Chuixupu, I bet, is another attempt at translation (Chinese) that preserves the uso=lie part.

Eggy or SHL could explain better, but here goes nothing:

Original Japanese name: Uso-Tsu-Pu
In Chinese, Pu means Cloth. Of course, there are lots of other meanings of Pu, but I don't know what made them choose this (Usopp's name is not written in Kanji, so there shouldn't be any relation to "cloth" in Chinese). My only assumption is that Cheat Cloth was derived from a version of his name which is already written in Chinese Kanji. The first translator must have used the kanji for Cloth to produce the sound Pu, and the next one translates that to the English meaning "Cheat Cloth".

Another translation combo
"Uso" clearly indicates his lying habits. The translators must have wanted to keep the meaning, so they used "Chuixu". According to my Chinese dictionary, "Chuixu" means "lavish praise on oneself or others," and we know how self-boasting our LongNose can get.

We can see a pattern on the other forms:
Liar-Boo
Swindler-Boo
Crook-Bu
Obviously, the "Pu" wasn't translated, whereas "Uso" can be varied easily.

Is that incorrect? I guess I don't really think too much about it. Sometimes it sounds more like "Usoppuh".

Speaking of Nagapana-kun, funny that Robin calls everyone else "-San" except for Usopp, as I recall.
