Chapter 688: Mocha
-
-
Hmm, not in flashback mode so Mocha's chances for survival look pretty good. (Bit of exposition about giantification too. Giving a timelne to the government's deeds) It's also nice to see Luffy and Chopper invested.
But where's Franky? Aiming to blow up Vegapunk's lab I hope. Could turn into a running gag in addition to counter blasting/dissipating the death gas.
-
Good chapter,Mocha character feels much more alive now(unfortunate choice of words but cant find another way to describe it).
The expressions were draw really well (especially Chopper and Mocha's(well they were the focus of chapter so its natural)) it made me feel for them much more.
I really thank Oda for panel time he is giving for minor/side characters , other authors just toss them aside(hoping for more from Brownbeard-sama!).The Comedic gold medal goes for Sanji again and his "soldiers".
Nice scarf you have there Luffy!
Im suprised Oda doesnt take more breaks with amount of project/events there has been lately of course i dont know how much he is involved in them.
Ah also i knew it that Tashigi would notice shusui right away, hope for more interactions between them(Zoro and Tashigi).
-
Stories aren't just about 'ORAORAORAORAORAORAORAOROAOROAOROAOROAOROAOROAOROAROOAROAROAORAOOROAOROAOROROA' or 'MUDAMUDAMUDAMUDAMDUAMDUADMAUDADAUDAMDUADMAUDMADUDMA'
Nothing is ever about that, whatever that is.
-
Mocha's a G. Damn u Oda, stop taking a break! Wait, what am I saying? Forgive me Oda-sama
-
This chapter was a dissapointment IMO. Yeah it was quite emotional…Mocha's 'sacrafice' (if she is dead) was a big one and some pages did manage to give me shivers. But the whole chapter felt spread out and kinda boring. I mean how many panels have we had the Nami, Robin and Chopper etc running while the kids scream "I WANT CANDY!!!". Yes we get it the kids want poison drug candy blah, blah, blah Ceaser is evil etc etc. Fortunately this is probably the last chapter that will be spent on them.
I think my main problem with this chapter is that it went from high gear (Zoro cutting Monet in half) to low gear (emotional flashback about children I never really cared about) too quickly. And now the two week wait until we go back to some ass kicking adventures of Luffy And His Pet Dragon :D
-
I'd like to add some side-discussion here (last week it was 44 pages of sexism, this week it'll be even longer due to the break and all about "fuck the kids// we love the kids", from what I gather).
Chopper said the giantification experiments have all been failures for centuries. Key word being failures.
Yet, since the beginning of the arc we've gotten a shitload of foreshadowing that Oars was the result of one of these experiments:
-
First a "subtle" hint like a skull really similar to Oars right at the PH entrance.
-
Same chapter, maybe less subtle, "bigger than a giant!".
-
And the more explicit by far, Oars shadow as clear as the day when talking about giantification experiments.
So, was Oars a failed experiment? Or even an experiment to begin with? Oda answered a fan in a SBS saying Oars came from an island where giants lived, and that he was an exceptionally big giant, like "there's allways this guy who's really tall, and he's still just a human", but with giants.
Is all of this going somewhere? Is it kind of a retcon to make him an experiment? And if they have all been but failures for centuries, Oars is a frigging failure? OARS? And if he's a failed experiment, how can he have descendants that are as massive as him?
. . .
. . .
Is this even relevant or is it just me?I wouldn't say Oars was a experiment, so much as if this theory is true (Key word there), the WG in the past saw how incredibly powerful Oars was and wanted to try and copy that power by literally creating that kind of super-giant he was for their own purposes. So, he was the blueprint, not the prototype. Again, if that's true.
-
-
I think Chopper needed them to counteract the drug later…and the 3 Straw Hats had a hard time, and failed, at keeping the kids back, so 2 would have been worse.
Chopper has been useless since his rumble ball wore off.
He can't fight, he can't run he is having Robin carry him around and throw him at the kids with a needle.
So that would mean either Robin or Nami would have to take the candies and run. Thus leaving only ONE person to fend off the kids. Also means that a person is holding a large batch of candy AND chopper, or the other is trying to hold off the kids, while also holding chopper.
And look at the candy. MOcha is not small. The amount of candy she is carrying is pretty substantial. It would be hard for Nami or Robin to run with that.
–- Update From New Post Merge ---
@Nex:
He got what he needed for an antidote a while back, he just hasn't had time to make it yet.
The anditode for the giantification process. Not for the candies.
The candies are just pure drugs, there is no antidote for that.
-
Is anyone else nervous that Monet's knocked out and the room's filling with gas? I mean, regardless of whether people want her to be in the crew or not, she's still a great character and I'd be sad to see her go.
-
Luffy did look pretty bad ass wearing momo like a scarf, suits the next pirate king.
-
i actually didn't like this part.sure,i can get him taking blame for mocha's condition at the end, because he let her care handle the candies.but unless chopper is a superman, and he ignored his signal,i don't get why should he apologise for something he didn't know.
BTW,lol at mangastream."you and your sword fetish."
Yea stupid chopper. How dare he feel sorry for a kid that is dying. I laugh in the face of kids that get cancer. nothing I could have done to stop their condition so why should I feel sorry and apoligize to them. Stupid ass cancer kids.
–- Update From New Post Merge ---
Well, I am pretty ok with the chapter. I know every chapter won't be action packed and ofcourse it would suck if it is. But, I can understand if ppl are dissappointed..just recounting the things yet to be shown here
- Luffy/momo vs ceaser
- Law/Smoker vs Vergo
3)SAD - Baby 5 and the cow
5)Franky - Kinemon trio
etc…so if we are given a subdued chapter right before a brk it is gonna annoy ppl a bit. And yeah I dont really look forward to the chapters focussed on kids..i know its imp for the arc but still...I hope I can enjoy the whole arc when it finishes...probably by next summer..
1. They haven't came into contact yet so not sure why people where expecting this yet
2. Oda doesn't show much in terms of fighting of non strawhats. i doubt we see much more of this fight, just its conclusion.
3. Kind of tied to the whole arcs mystery. Won't find out more of this till the very end
4. How are people expecting them to get to this island so quick? They need to sail to this island from wherever they are don't they?
5. I can see the curiousity of "where is Franky" Have we seen him since he did fireball to create the smoke to escape?
6. This is just something people are going to have to deal with when you have a crew of 9 people. Each person gets their time. can't complain every week when your "favorite" isn't shown. -

Posting messed it up. It had a different layout. Too lazy to fix it.
What if one of those things don't ever happen at least in this arc.
Did I say it's supposed to be resolved in this arc?
~~
And uhh, you guys do know you DON'T HAVE TO QUOTE THE WHOLE THING! Shocking, but it's true! By doing so, you don't have to see a long list every time!~

@400MillionBelis:
Zoro and Tashigi: RESOLVED
What do you exactly mean with this? If it's the fight they had with Monet, that's done. If it's the fight between them, that's not gonna be resolved any time soon.
If you're going to make a list like this, perhaps a separate thread for it as a reference would be better?

LOL don't bother asking. The guy's like that every week. Basically a "shit chapter next week please" type of poster.
Hahahah that`s kind of hilarious, in its own bizarre way I suppose. Thanks for letting me know.
The only thing I would hate is if Mocha comes out of this 100% okay. Because that's too unrealistic in my eyes….there must be some kind of backlash for overdosing like that.
Maybe she will get bigger- "giantify" in an unprecedented way. A high risk may involve a high "retribution"?. Ok, I hate using the retribution concept, maybe consequence will fit better; but honestly a gigantified kid (Fake giant kid) might have his/her own advantages. For all we know a development in this area could lead as a tie in to the Elbaf arc. Of course, that is for ODA to decide
-
This chapter…
All my tears. ;____; -
I really love coming to this forum to hear people's opinion on the chapter. I like discussions about what happened, because it helps clarify things. There are predictions and theories many people have and I love that. However, lately there has been a lot of complaining about how Oda's writing this story. Now I won't go off and start telling all the naysayers to stfu, but I'd really appreciate a discussion about the CHAPTER and not "OMG ODA IS SEXIST" or "WTF THE KIDS SUCK NO ONE CARES ABOUT THEM."
Thanks.Well said, my friend, well said.
@S.C.:
I wouldn't say Oars was a experiment, so much as if this theory is true (Key word there), the WG in the past saw how incredibly powerful Oars was and wanted to try and copy that power by literally creating that kind of super-giant he was for their own purposes. So, he was the blueprint, not the prototype. Again, if that's true.
I agree with you. The following isn't to you but the others that claim Oars has to be an experiment
Oars and his decendent, Oars Jr, are not from the giantification experiemts. They clearly said that those experiments have always failed. We know there are giants, and there is several different types and different cultures of giants. It takes several generations (at the very least -2 - to meet the requirement of 'tradition' to make a culture) But the experiemts failed, so those giants are natural.
Robin clearly siad that Oars is from a vicious tribe of giants. In a SBS, Oda said that Oars is a different kind of giant from Dorry & Broggy. He explained that some giants are just different from each other, the words he used makes it sound as if its natural.Chopper has been useless since his rumble ball wore off.

**The anditode for the giantification process. Not for the candies.
The candies are just pure drugs, there is no antidote for that**.
Mostly true, its said the giantification process is what will kill the kids, and the drug is what driving them besersk. What is wrong with them right now is withdral from taking the drug is in the candy. No antidote, only time will get them through the withdrawls. in high doses NHC10 can cause side effects though, we don't know if all the side effects can be reversed
-
And the defender of justice and protector of the innocent came to tell me that my opinion is wrong? I have no problem with the flashback, or the kids, it's just that in my opinion this chapter is boring. This alone is no big problem, but last week's chapter wasn't very interesting either and next week we have a break. I would prefer it if this chapter also showed Law/Vergo/Smoker or Franky or Usopp/Brook/Kinemon or something more interesting so we have actual content to discuss for 2 weeks.
–- Update From New Post Merge ---
So you accuse me of being shallow? I wish I was smart like you and I could judge people's character and behaviour based on 2 posts in a forum.
It's not that you opinion is wrong, it's just no one cares what you think or wants to read it. The things you say are not very insightful and don't really create any meaningful conversations about One Piece the arguments just boil down to "well, it's my opinion" or "that's your opinion." Certain opinions can be wrong by the way, not every opinion is a neutral statement that you can hide behind by just saying the word opinion over and over again.
Also no one called you shallow you just inferred that…
-
Nothing is ever about that, whatever that is.
You're very misinformed! "Ora ora ora" and "muda muda muda" are the way Japanese people urge someone to GET PUMPED UP for a fight. So any story with fighting and there's a good chance you'll see that. But of course what I could be saying could extend to other parts of the Japanese language; I'm only just starting to learn Japanese.
So lots of things ARE about that.
-
Yeah, sorry, wasn't actually being serious… Just sort of poking fun at the random stupid exaggeration of it.

wonder where the hell is franky.. is he looking for the sunny?

Just curious here, but…was it 'always' like that or Jojo's adventures are really that strong over there?

I'm not sure if anyone has mentioned this yet, but this chapter really goes to show how useful kings haki can be.
lol yeah…I agree...thanks for pointing it out

Random question: Why are the southbirds in your sig not pointing in the same direction?
Also, I will be upset if Mocha doesn't die… it would be epic for not only a named character to die, but child-killing too. runs

Also, I will be upset if Mocha doesn't die… it would be epic for not only a named character to die, but child-killing too. runsNot all of them are South birds. That was the pic Oda used to show some of the other directional birds= North, East & West BIrds.
The one that lookes like a heart next to the Sout Bird is the North Bird, that heart is suppose to a N but is a heart becuse its fallen in love with that South bird (at least thats what Oda said lol). In that pic its small so ard to tell butt he other two birds…look at their crests, one is a W and the other is E -

Ah, okay. I'm usually pretty good at picking up sarcasm, so, my bad. Just remember Poe's law makes it hard that, even if you're being blatantly sarcastic, sometimes people can have trouble picking it up over the Internet.

It would certainly explain the predominantly negative posts while never explaining anything. But he's pretty innocuous compared to before, so it's like a mosquito buzzing around.

You should post an updated version of this list after each chapter.
16 characters of this.

-
Ok chapter for me. I like the scarf of Luffy.
-
I've really been waiting for these kids to do something to endear themselves to me. Things are really starting to wrap up. This chapter is going to suffer from not being what people are eager to see, combined with a break next week. Instant gratification is probably not a battle worth fighting very hard.
-
I love this cover story. Of course it makes sense that Caribou wouldn't be able to sail a huge ship through the New World by himself. Since the Straw Hats didn't really charge into the New World as green rookies, I guess Oda wants to use Caribou to demonstrate how difficult that's supposed to be. I have no idea where this is going to go from here. On one hand, I can't imagine Coribou being over and done with, but on the other hand I want to see Caribou's adventure move forward to new things.
-
I like the wrapup page for Zoro's fight. He has trouble figuring out the right way to go even when gas is coming in from one side and he was defending the corridor the others left through. It's also a nice touch for Tashigi to notice Shuusui, even though she doesn't have her glasses on. Hard to know if she'll inquire about Yubashiri as a result or not. I was caught off guard that she can't run very well anymore, but I suppose I shouldn't be surprised. She's gotten her ass kicked left and right lately. Monet appears set to join the ever growing cast of characters caught in the poison gas, which only reinforces the idea that they'll all get saved somehow.
-
It's nice to see Nami, Robin, and Chopper actually doing something to make progress with this psycho kid situation. Futilely holding them back temporarily was obviously not going to cut it. I'd also been wondering where those sedatives Chopper mentioned a while ago were and why he wasn't using them. I'm reasonably satisfied with how these issues were resolved. It seems like Robin is underperforming, though. She should be able to lock down more of them at at time, especially since the move she used was worth what, 100 limbs only? I mean, her ability to slow the kids down shouldn't be limited by helping Chopper, or at least not quite so much. I frequently feel like she's treated like a background character in the short term, and it's something of a trend at this point. Like when I read Stephen's Alpha translation of chapter 679 recently, I realized she's only after seastone because Luffy probably asked her to in order to capture Caesar after he was defeated (which she's not even doing, instead leaving it to Usopp and Brook to take care of). It makes plenty of sense, but I was hoping for something she decided on her own. The Jaya days of her collecting great short-term information to directly impact the immediate plot seem like a distant memory.
-
The one thing I felt this arc had been seriously lacking before this chapter was a strong emotional connection to these kids. I mean, it always seemed easy to logically recognize the depths of the atrocities committed against them, but there was never anything particularly distinguishing (other than them being big) or endearing about them. They weren't bad by any means, just hollow. Despite how awful I understood their situation to be, I found myself more emotionally invested in the G5 marines and Momonosuke after just a single chapter, which was a screaming indication of how it wasn't just a case of them being side characters. Several chapters ago it seemed that Mocha would be the kid Oda would use to fix that, and boy did he. Mocha sacrificing herself by eating all the candy to save the other kids was heart wrenching for me, and it was a turn of events I never expected. I could feel her dying as soon as she did it (not that she actually will). In that single moment, everything changed for me. Before this chapter I needed to understand their situation logically. Now I simply ache for them, and it's all natural. I'm also glad we got the sedative explanation for why she's not a raving psychopath like the others.
-
Doing a flashback within a flashback is typically a pretty tall order. It can get confusing real quick. I had absolutely no confusion about this one, though. I actually got into it, and I think that's in no small part due to the fact that it came right after Mocha's moment of sacrifice. The simple timing of it added a ton of weight to it for me. I really felt for her, after seeing her shiver and break down while learning the truth. And then to find her resolve and put her own life on the line to save the other kids, Mocha became one seriously cool little girl. She ranks right up there with Rika and Chimney, but all 3 for different reasons. She makes Aisa seem even less impressive than she was before. I'll be shocked if she doesn't pull through this. Also, I'm wondering how this island of gold thing will become important later.
-
Much like with Zoro last chapter, Chopper seems to be getting a hugely important chapter for his character despite it being somewhat overshadowed by the other stuff. First, there are the parallels to the tragedy in his backstory, and the opportunity to overcome them in this case. He also took responsibily for Mocha's situation multiple times, even if the first case was pretty unfounded. This chapter really focuses on his role and attitude as a doctor. I think this is the first time since Drum that Chopper has had to deal with something medically beyond just someone taking excessive damage in a fight. All evidence points to what he's dealing with being a massive challenge (and I'm not just focused on stomach pumping Mocha here). Especially the fact that he's trying to undo damage that centuries worth of research hasn't figured out. Of course, the emergency treatment of Mocha also has to be done in a very short amount of time. These are the types of challenges he needs to show off how his medical knowledge/abilities in particular have grown over the timeskip. It's interesting to me that the physical portion of it was far too much for him to handle on his own. I'm glad that drawbacks like that get included.
This chapter yet again acts as a snapshot of Chopper's character, and depicts his development from the tragedy he faced in his backstory. We got a similar thing with Zoro last chapter, and also with Nami back on Fishman Island. I like how Oda seems to be on course to do this for everyone on the crew, yet without forcing it. None of it seems rushed and it all fits in naturally with what's going on around them. It's also spread out and random enough to not become repetitive. I only hope he can follow these chapters up with equally relevant continuations eventually without delaying them for too long. This is one of those things that could get turned into a serious essay.
-
The stuff with Sanji and G5 just refuses to get old for me. My opinion of G5 grows with every chapter. Back when the crew first broke the kids out, the idea of entrusting them to G5 seemed necessary yet worrisome at the same time. Now I have full confidence that the kids will be fine if G5 sets off to take them home. It's odd that Robin could probably wipe them all out with ease, yet the arrival of their strength in this case seems to change everything. Oh well, this is one of those things I just need to overlook probably.
-
Usopp, Brook, and Kinemon haven't been in a chapter for a while now, nor have Smoker, Vergo, and Law, and finally Franky's been gone forever at this point. Of course, Franky will return with a Don, and I get the feeling it'll happen when the others are cornered by the killer gas. Whatever happens with Smoker, Vergo, and Law will wind up being really important, if for no other reason than the horribly dangerous room that they're fighting in. Whatever happens there will probably change everything. I'm not convinced that Usopp, Brook, and Kinemon are going to be involved in anything all that groundbreaking, though. Round up the remaining kids and secure some seastone to tie Caesar up with. But hey, maybe I'll be surprised. There's also Brownbeard, whose absense is turning suspiciously long. It seems like he might play a role in what Caesar's men do during the final showdown. Luffy doesn't need the help, but for their own sakes.
-
Finally, the chapter ends with Luffy wearing Momo like a scarf or something, which is fairly amusing. Luffy's mantra appears to be broken, though. Does he really need to ask where Caesar is? It's not like the words "building R" would be helpful to him, anyway. Maybe this is foreshadowing that he won't be able to find his way into the secret room right away. But even in that case, Momo would have the answers. My guess is that Luffy's role in the next chapter will only amount to getting into that room, though. Either way, these last two chapters seem to indicate the arc is nearing its conclusion.
-
Shame there's no chapter next week, but at least this should be the last time until the brutal winter break.

Yeah, sorry, wasn't actually being serious… Just sort of poking fun at the random stupid exaggeration of it.
how can you said this?

Not sure you can top "slowly killing tons of children by feeding meth", on top of all the other atrocities he's been comitting. -

I think he's pretty much left Spamdam in the dust already.
Not sure you can top "slowly killing tons of children by feeding meth", on top of all the other atrocities he's been comitting.I think part of that is Ceasar is almost cartoonishly evil. So all the evil things he has done while really fucked up when you think about it, the thoughts don't get that far cause he has such a long list and he's just laughing and puffing away like doing one completely nonsensecial evil thing after the next is just business as usual. The other part is that it's been hard to connect with the victims of his evil. The islanders kind of blindly follow him which would almost be like Buggy Prisoner lvl of funny pathetic if Ceasar weren't so obviously evil. I don't really know the G5 Marines. And up until now the children have seemed like more of a plot device than actual characters. I know you touched on this and i agree.
Hearing Mocha talk about their dreams like that and how she explained that she never saw this outcome coming was just the right thing to say to make her real for me. And when she became real all the children became real and what Caesar was doing to them, purely because he could seemed real. He doesn't even have a reason to do this experiment, it's just another one of his wacky fucked up things he does in his spare time. There's a real nastiniess to it that i don't like. I've always ranked spandam extremely low because he was such an obviously pathetic man on a power trip willing to do anything to keep that high going and he beat robin around like it was no thing. That really pissed me off in a way that most other villains don't. I always want to see the bad guy get whats coming to him but i really wanted something special to happen to spandam. I want something special to happen to caesar too. At this point just seeing him lose wouldn't be enough.

I'm one of the guys who almost teared up at Toy Story 3's ending, but didn't have the tearducts flowing.
This actually got me tearing up.The more you read it the better this chapter gets… The pinnacle of short and sweet.
-
I've really been waiting for these kids to do something to endear themselves to me.

Good post, only thing I disagree with is the Robin comments.
You have to realize that no matter how strong these kids are, the strawhats still see them as they are "KIDS"
If they were enemies I'm sure she could use her many typical moves that break joints and what not, but she is not going to do that to these kids. Same reason Monster Chopper didn't knock out the kids while he was in that form for three minutes. I'm sure he could have KO'd them all while in that form.
While Robin could probably beat all of G5 guys by herself, a huge group of guys can hold a lot of kids better. They just need to grab on and hold, much easier to do it to one person than many. Robin would have to hold down 20 kids herself, while G5 just need to worry about 1 each person. And once that person is sedated that person is free to help out another.
You have to realize that Nami and Robin aren't strong. This has been stated since the start. Robin wins by attacking weak points in a person, such as joints. or using many arms to hold a someting in place, ect. These kids are supposed to be super strong. If she could concentrate on just one, I'm sure she can easily do it, case in point she and chopper did indeed sedate at least one kid. But she has to concentrate on 20 kids running, dodging, attacking, moving ect all at same time and she is trying to stop them without doing ANY damage whatsoever to them. Beating someone without doing damage is way harder than being able to beat them by damage. Especially if they are basically a crack head. I'm sure everyone has heard to not mess with a crack head, they basically have that "mother saving a baby" strength while in that mode.
edit: must say though after reading spoiler when the chapter came out there was only one thing that didn't improve 1000% with the chapter and that was the Momo wrapped around Luffy. Really wish Kubo was in charge of that page. Oda made it too small. Luffy wearing that looked really cool, but it was such a small picture. Should have been a fullpage of him standing there. maybe we'll get it when he enters on CC in future.

-
Too bad Luffy wasn't near Mocha, one CoC blast would have ended the situation.

Yea, unless being in drug mode like that makes them not affected.
But yea, the perfect opportunity for CoC and Luffy isn't there. It's wasted on beating pointless fodder, it was invented to take out drugged up kiddies.

I appreciate your level-headed posts and don't want to undermine them by picking them apart, but I think the size was fine. Save the full page Luffy reactions for when he's talking to Shanks/Dragon and such about important things.
Except if you're Bleach, most manga abide by the rule that you save full-page facial pages (…lol) for when characters have a huge epiphany or something similar.
I understand what you mean though, if I really think about it, maybe it could have been 75% of the page.

GUYS.
GUYS GO HOME.
UR DRUNK.
Stories aren't just about 'ORAORAORAORAORAORAORAOROAOROAOROAOROAOROAOROAOROAROOAROAROAORAOOROAOROAOROROA' or 'MUDAMUDAMUDAMUDAMDUAMDUADMAUDADAUDAMDUADMAUDMADUDMA'
They have plot to them other than fighting, you know.
The kids are an important part of the current arc, and Oda is trying to prey on our emotions with them also.
And you guys are like 'ERMAHGERD GTFO KIDS YOU SUCK BLAHBLAHBLAH BACK TO FIGHITNG BLAHBLAHBLAH' really now?
If you want none-stop fighting go watch Naruto. Seriously you guys.
Get. Over. It.
if One Piece was just fighting all the damned time I'd probably not enjoy it as much. It needs breaks from fighting… it needs some emotion, damn it!
You didn't complain at the Going Merry Viking Funeral - you bawled your manly eyes out.
You didn't complain at Ace getting magma fisted in the chest - you whined your asses off/bawled your eyes out/curled into a fetal position for a few weeks as you mourned the loss of your firey hot sex god known as Ace.
You didn't complain at the Otohime flashback and her death - You bawled your damned eyes out.
We know Oda likes to present us with moments which bring on emotions.
There will be some in this arc as we saw this chapter.
So get over it for the love of god.
TAKE IT LIKE A MAN/WOMAN/WHATEVER/WHOEVER YOU ARE.
And stop whining.
Otherwise I'll have to post the Emo!Ace picture.
Or worse...Your post might make sense if there was some abundance of fighting in this arc, but there isn't what so ever. Your post is the epitome of whining, yet you are complaining about other people doing the same. Can you get over yourself and stop acting like you are the dictator of people's opinions? This entire arc has been plot with tiny little skirmishes rarely mixed in. It doesn't make you smart to make a straw man argument as if all of us want an epic fight every chapter. There has been 1 somewhat enjoyable fight this entire arc, and it was at the very start with Smoker and Law. One piece is a Shounen manga, so please don't act like the main focus is not action/combat/adventure, it is. Chapters about kids eating toxic candy isn't what made One Piece the best manga out there. This is not taking into account how illogical it is to tell people to get over how much they dislike a chapter in a forum that is dedicated to you talking about how you saw the chapter.
On a sidenote…why did you throw Naruto under the bus? Naruto has plot development just like One Piece...the difference between them isn't some secret ingredient, it's just a sum of the whole...I strongly dislike Naruto, but if you're acting like it's all fighting than you haven't read it.

Great chapter. It's nice to see the kids be in the spotlight a little. After the break, all tony chopper plot haters will resume praising Oda for such an awesome chapter.
Luffy's will is obviously stronger than the children's.The haki blast would worked on them regardless of the fact that they're coked up. But let's not turn this into a haki debate. It's too early:ninja:.

Look at this example
!
That is the kind of page I would have preferred. have Luffy be as big as Tashigi, yet still have multiple panels on the page where stuff/dialogue is going on.
Or this one
!
I know those are character intro pages, but there are plenty of non-intro pages very similar to those.
I don't mean like this
!
That is just a waste of two pages, or one page. The ones i posted above still have other things going on besides a badass intro.

You don't know if it would have worked.
If the kids were sane yes his Haki would destroy them, but they are coked out of their mind. They are basically unconcious beings already. They aren't registering any words said to them.
Who knows how a haki blast would affect them.

Yes it would have worked. The reason being that the meth tampers with their emotions. They're basically behaving like wild outraged animals. Last time I checked, Luffy can tame a wild beast with a greater will than those children. Im pretty much saying that just because those kids are huge and angry doesn't change the fact that they have the minds of a child with a temper tantrum.

There is a difference between something that is angry versus drugged out.
I would compare these kids to like an animal with Rabbies or something. We don't know how haki would work on things like this. It seems like haki is like an intimidation. I don't see a rabid animal or a druged out person being able to feel intimidation. They feel nothing.
at least thats how i see it.
