Interesting….I really don't know what this is. Some stuff is defintely different between the two maps.
Explanation please?
What does each color represent?
Libya isn't quite up to the level of its former flag's greenness

Oh lol, I was sure most people would remember.

Oh wow, no country is in black. That's good to see.
Dark red/black: the worst
Red/orange: low third world
light orange/yellows: developing third world
light greens: "second" world if you will.
greens/dark greens: first world or rich rich generous monarchies
Well, glad to see I live in dark green…

I hadn't really been frequenting the General threads then.
Interesting to see though.
Forgive my lack of knowledge, but what do the grey areas represent? Lack of data?

Yes. Unfortunately.
With the civil war going on, I assumed that Syria would be a bit darker.
What are those islands to the north that are dark green
@Monkey:
Yes. Unfortunately.
Hmm, it seems North Korea is one of these areas…..
What are those islands to the north that are dark green
norway or canada owns whichever islands you're talking about
Only the true elite gets dark green. Sorry, Brittain.

It will never not be funny that Ireland passed them.
Had heard that we were really slipping down in the rankings but it's good to see that we're still in the darker shade of green

I'm shocked Greece stayed where they did.
According to some dudes estimation Greece was set to pass Germany in the HDI by 2015
Doesn't seem to all to reflective off the actual state of things. But what do i know
All i know is that i look forward to duking it out for the bottom rung with Bulgaria 37 years from now
It looks like Moldova is the only European country in yellow.
It looks like Moldova is the only European country in yellow.
Yes, though Kosovo doesn't have a score. I think their estimates for Kosovo put it near Ukraine at worst though.
Moldova is it's own basket case.
Though it might interest you to know, some of the worse Russian provinces are in the European area near Belarus.
But i suppose it means that Smudger's massive faith in Australia as the new greatest place on earth was warranted

It's easy to run a hollow shell of seaports rimmed by farmlands. Nothing impressive.
They do have tons and tons of mineral wealth. Once stuff starts running out, everyone will run to the Aussie outback.
Wonder how Norway would hold out after their oil runs out.
They have been diversifying like crazy using that oil surplus. So it'll probably not drop to far from the top
Every single year, I keep getting more and more scared of the impeding implosion that will happen when our baby boomers hit the retirement phase en masse and utterly wreck the entire system. Our shortsighted, power-hogging politicians won't know what to do (and they're already screwing up our educational system too), so the future looks pretty bleak, heh.
Gotta get out before we slip back into the European backwater status we somehow managed to climb out of.

That's why you Yerpens have to embrace immigration lol.
Ya'll gonna get old and have too few younguns to pay and work.
We Nord Mericans don't have this issue.
I know. I've been saying that for years and almost gotten punched a couple of times as a result. We ain't ready yet, even though we have to be.
And I want out before the worst happens. It's not going to be that bad realistically speaking, but I don't know if I want to live in a country of equally miserable opportunities.
Is hard to belive that Brazil is worst than Argentina and Chile, even when Dilma said that Brazil managed to "almost" eliminate poverty…I guess not.
And I don´t see any change between last year and this year HDI in Brazil, they both are light green, huun...If the BRICs were a valid group, China and India should have being in a better condition that were shown.
Good to see Africa with high standards (no black stain in my map), is that because we had some massive "tyrant free country" domino style historical events in Africa in the past years ?
Looks like the DR Congo has managed to pull itself out of the black (somehow)
I'm surprised that Libya's remained consistant, considering it's going through the post-dictator "work shit out painfully" phase

Well you have way more folks than them, so statistically it will be tougher to improve on certain things.

There's exact math to it. Brazil I think HAS risen. I'll find the stats I used to make the map later. They should be on wikipedia soon.
For the most part the colors represent 50 point brackets each.
As for the BRICS, that mentions economic power not living standards.
Brazil I've always said is the best BRIC for having the best home situation.
You have rising decent living standards (as compared to the crippling poverty on India and China). And you have democracy where Russia and China do not.
Not to mention Russia's economy is stagnate at best, likely to fall at worst.
Brazil better comparison might be Indonesia all things considered.

Africa marginally improved at best lol.
Though some of the standouts do have better governance. Ghana has more or less maintained democracy aside from some bad years.

Some parts of Libya are pretty stable and normal like Tripoli.
Bar Kum has said however that Benghazi is kinda the opposite sadly.
Like Tripoli gets both the domestic investments, foreign investments, and the decent security.
Because of that last one, crazy people choose City#2 to go and stir up trouble in.

What about Turkey, do you know?
I'm assuming the reason why they're not counted amongst the rising powers is that they seem to have a pretty stable living conditions in most of the country and aren't exactly facing any huge difficulties unless we count the situation with Syria and the Kurds, but it would be interesting to hear more about them. I've been under the impression that they're doing pretty well these days and rising in a pretty similar fashion to Brasil, just with a lower curve due to the pre-existing wealth.
Highest youth unemployment in ages, and the response is supposed to be to bring more competition for the few jobs there are?
Compounded by that most of the retirees old jobs end up being rationalized or taken over by machines
I don't see when we're supposed need that whole army of unskilled labourers that everyone seems to want

The Kurds are a HUGE domestic problem lol. That's nothing small. Some estimates to the amount of Kurds in Turkey are like…25% tops. They live mostly in the east part, and in way poorer areas than the west parts.
I'm not sure honestly. I think it's because Turkey doesn't have the population or geography of the BRICS. Who are these HUGEEEE countries with fucktons of people..(well not so many in Russia). Whereas Turkey is like a middle sized country.
but it would be interesting to hear more about them. I've been under the impression that they're doing pretty well these days and rising in a pretty similar fashion to Brasil, just with a lower curve due to the pre-existing wealth.
Lower curve yeah. The current ruling party has ruled over a huge jump in wealth and stuff. And they have also probably finally killed off the military's coup instincts.
That's good. Though Turkish democracy is still a sick creature, the press situation is bad for instance.
Also they have the world's most awkward foreign policy. Their neighbors hate them, Europe is skeptical of them. The Middle East is unsure about them. Russia hates them.
They're politically pretty friendly with the US I guess (though Turks hate us???).
Turkey still doesn't know who the fuck it is, where it's going etc.
They have a great deal of past to reconcile, and a great deal of present.
I like describing Turkey as a very adolescent nation.

Can you get a age population pyramid for Sweden for me?
It depends on how that looks really. Sweden might not have Japan Disease, we'll call it that.

Come to think of it, I don't think my Turkish thermodynamics professor quite knew who he was either. Occasionally, he would work on a problem, turn to us and say, "wait a minute, why am I doing this?"

First google hit. US census buraeu sounds reliable enough. How does it look?
The future proofing scenario vs what's going on right now aspect just throws me off.
Reminds me of how my grandparents were suckered into pulling their teeth and getting dentures.
That is some slick dude sells you a save the future deal at a price that's not really worth it.

Not as scary as Japan's, but with our tax-funded pension system this really doesn't bode well for us.
Yeah i don't expect a tax-funded pension when i retire.
That money was "borrowed" to plug leaks in the budget looooong ago

So, improvement in S America and Africa, and surprisingly little change elsewhere?
I can't see the colour of the dot that is Singapore, at least not on my phone's resolution. Is anyone able to make it out?

Singapore is between Austria and France, so you're really really well off and have the second place color scheme I guess.

Look at the data I just posted.
If you're meaning change of color, Croatia bumped up in Europe, as did Turkey.
lol North Korea is gray…
The Grandiose Democratic Shiny Happy People's Most Serene Republic of All Koreas is ever humble, accepting a proletariat grey as opposed to the more extravagant and more deserved GREAT DEEP DEEP DEEP GREEN OF SUCH SIZE AND SCOPE
lol North Korea is gray…
I really want to know what their score would be. But every HDI that comes out is the same story. NO DATA. NO DATA. NO DATA.

India's still almost among low developed countries… shrugs
Any Norwegians on the forums? or are they too busy having incredible lives?
Hmm now that i think about it i don't know of any Norweigans who hang around here
We've got plenty of Danes, Finns, and Swedes. But we're curiously low on Norws
Guess they haven't figured out how to use the internet yet
I figure it would take quite long to lay all the cable over all those mountains and from one side of a fjord to the other.
They're probably still in the process of doing so. Expect to see them some fifty years from now, maybe.
