Things I learned from the Skypia arc

Okay Im going to say this right off the bat. This post contains HUGE spoilers for the Skypia arc. If you haven't seen or read the whole Skypia arc and do not wish to spoil it DO NOT READ ANY FURTHER I do not want to see "Well gee thanks for spoiling the whole arc!" posts because Im telling you now, and you have been duly noted (SP?) Okay, I just got done reading and watching the whole Skypia arc. Personally I didn't think it was as bad as most people said it was, but I can understand why it would loose ratings and turn people off. A few things bothered me in this arc. One of them was Chopper… since when did he become such a coward? I mean seriously, didn't he fight Wapol's henchmen? And Miss MerryChristmas without thinking twice about running away? All of a sudden in Skypia he became another Ussop! Since he's my favorite character that just really bugged me the whole time. He should have been out there with his rumble balls tearing it up with Luffy ^_^

Another thing was there were too many people that... well I don't mean to be harsh but that should have died. This annoyed me in the Alabsta arc too. I'm not trying to be mean but I hate when they have this tragic death scene for a character (Pell, Chaka, Igaram and now Conis' father) and then they aren't really dead. Now when I see a character die in One Piece, I just assume they aren't dead. I hate it when shows or stories do this because now any death I see I'll just assume it isn't real and that really decreases the impact of some scenes. Not that I want people to DIE DIE DIE but if you give someone a tragic death scene, they should stay dead =/

Kinda like the above, too many people survived attacks they shouldn't have. Not Luffy's crew but people surviving the 100 million bolt attack... I know it's an anime but come on... a normal person surviving that really makes Luffy not look like such a hot shot. <_<

Norland is a good guy! He didn't lie! WE GET IT! It just seemed to me like they kept rubbing this in our faces. I figured he wasn't a liar once they found Sky Island :rolleyes: But he saved the people, did this and that and this and this and that and that and that and was killed... we get it! He was killed unfairly!... maybe I just wasn't in the mood to read about his history XD

The mantras (I think that's right) seemed inconsistant. If you can always know what your enemy is going to do that HA HA HAAAAA! fat person (I never got the name) should have known when Luffy was going to grab him or her or whatever the hell it was. Maybe they can only see attacks? But then how did Eneru know only 5 people would be alive at the one point?
Another thing is, random attacks shouldn't matter. If he can always see the future, it doesn't matter if it's random, he should always see the outcome. Maybe it's because he can only read people's minds? but then how, again, did he know only 5 people would be alive at that one point?... or maybe some of this was lost in the HK translations so let me know if I just missed something here.

Somewhere along the line it's mentioned that the reason animals grow so big on Skypia but I forgot what it was. So animals are bigger on Skypia and that's why the trees are so huge... but then why was the snake so large in Norland's past?
I also like to note that I thought it was interesting that people thought the snake was God since in the bible, Satan (god's enemy) is represented by a snake XD

Luffy vs Eneru (or as he's called in the HK dubs, Alino XD)
I don't want Luffy to die but all Im gonna say is... he should have at least gotten burnt from the lightning attacks.

I mean I know it's just an anime and not all things are real... or even close XD but usually One Piece is good for staying on the believable side of things.

So there, now I present the top 10 things I learned while watching the Skypia arc.

10. Giant boats can float on clouds
9. Reindeer become cowards in the sky
8. Gods change out every few years
7. Giants on the earth are actually caused by shadows of people who dwell in the clouds
6. People can survive 100 million votes of lightning
5. Gold helps lightning become more powerful
4. It's possible to survive inside a giant snake's stomach, but make note, gold doesn't digest well
3. Seashells come in handy: nuff said
2. Clouds can be made out of iron and vice versa

and the number one thing I learned while watching Skypia is

1. Lightning and Rubber are natural enemies =D

Wow, Boy were you really pissed off with this arc. Like all I heard was just complaints and hardly enough about the goods things. Although its been a while since I read the Skypiea arc, it was indeed one of the best arcs I have ever read/watched. Like seriously its just a non-fictional story. It doesn't always have to make sense. Don't think so much of it and just enjoy it. Although I have to admit that Wiper was indeed a little too powerful to withstand soo many attacks.

Yeah, basically, the same problems you had with Skypiea are the same reasons why it's not one of my favorite arcs (that and the length), but I never got the impression that anyone ever thought it was "bad". I like it quite a lot. It's very imaginative and I love the idea of going up to an island in the sky, and how the earth is considered more special than the clouds.

I have to ask you, what did you think of the figure that Usopp saw fixing the ship? Or have you read spoilers about that already? =)

okay I didn't hate this arc at all I just posted everything I DIDN'T like. Alot of things I did like. I always enjoy watching Luffy kick some bad dude's ass. I loved the suspense and I loved how there was hardly a dull moment. Those above were just moments I rolled my eyes at. Over all I'd give it like a 7.5/10... where as my fav arc Alabasta would have gotten like a 9.5/10 (again cause of the fake deaths)

so uh.. yeah didn't mean to like make you think I hated it and just bitch but I just wanted to point those things out and basically say "okay I can see why people didn't enjoy this arc as much"

You'll find out in Water 7. :) I was just curious if you had any thoughts about it, or was it just so mysterious that you didn't even try to guess? Most likely you won't guess right. I doubt anybody did, unless they know something about German folklore. ;)

The Davy Back Fight is a lot of fun. It's kind of like going back to the early days of One Piece, except even better. :)

The Davy Back fight is good and Water 7 is going to blow your mind. It is so exciting; I can't wait for you to start reading it.

There's some DBF episodes subbed already. The problem with DBF animated is that they add some extra stuff. There's 2 or 3 extra games. I haven't seen them myself, though.

This is kinda off topic… But I gotta ask... Remember when it's revealed that the Grand Line islands all have a unique weather system? Well can you tell me all the islands they've been on while on the Grand Line and what weather system each of them had?

And I like the Skypeia arc... But I think it would've been better if it was shorter. It was too stretched out.

Nobody knows who his grandfather is yet. Plus, everyone has two grandfathers, you know. :)

The DBF episodes are by Hell Fansubs, and now, BalF fansubs. There's a thread about them in the forum.

Really?! I thought the only difference was, in the manga, it was just Ussop, Robin, and Nami in the Donut Race while in the Anime the whole crew joined the race! Then they just continue with the Groggy Ring and after that the fight between the 2 captains! Well that's what I think atleast! I haven't seen episodes 211-219 either!

Wow, it seems Oda nearly screwed up in the Skypiea arc and the anime messed it up more.

What I like in Skypiea was dials, angles, cloud techology, and cloud island. But would it be more nice if there was a castle and a king in Skypiea? Would it be nice if we see a air-merman or a air animals in Skypiea? It would give this arc more profit if that happens.

oh that's why there's an episode with the word "dodgeball" in it ^_^
I'd like to see these episodes but I have to wait for now. Any attempt to download HK episodes right now aren't going very well for me =/

No, other than adding some games, it ends the same. Except apparently a mole carries away Tonjit instead of Aokiji, because they moved Aokiji up to after the filler arc. Foxy, Hamburg, and Porche are alone, but it has nothing to do with the DBF with Luffy's crew.

Nah, I don't think he screwed up at all. It's just not perfect. :)

I think my biggest problem with Skypia was the whole "Rubber is lightning's natural enemy"… I just think he could have been more creative than that. I mean since when? XD You're telling me if I live in a rubber house it will never get hit by lightning? or was it just that Eneru couldn't channel his attacks not knowing what rubber was?... weird weird weird... well that and the Mantra was inconsistent. Im not even really sure how Luffy hit Eneru for the last time... I had to stare at that page a bit and figure it out and I forgot to ask

The part with Eneru in the end saying "I will never die Im going down to the blue sea!" in his big ass ship... was that a flashback or is he really still alive? I honestly couldn't tell... oh well, time to watch my first Gerusama episode

I didn't have a problem with the rubber v. lightening thing. I thought it was cool. The whole thing about water making Crocodile unable to turn to sand bugged me a little more.

The two things I found really weird in Skypiea :

1. How can water carry an island to the sky? Since when do islands float on the sea?

2. Why did Cyandians have wings 400 years ago? That doesn't make sense, since it's something only people living in sky islands have.

On the other hand, you got it wrong about mantra. It doesn't help see the future, it helps read your opponent's intentions. You basically guess what your opponent is going to do. It's not like the Sharingan in Naruto. Eneru for instance knew how Luffy was going to hit because he read his mind. That's why Luffy tries to stop thinking. Then Eneru probably saw Luffy's intention of hitting the wall, but couldn't foresee the outcome if all he read from Luffy's mind was "hit the wall". And about Satori being caught by Luffy, he said himself his mantra broke when the dragon balls exploded, so he didn't know Luffy grabbed him. Once he restored his mantra, it was too late, since Luffy already did grab him. Luffy's intention of grabbing him was gone.

I liked the Skypiea arc up to the survival, then found it boring. The priests were not interesting foes (unlike Water Seven or Alabasta) and I didn't care much about Eneru (while I really wanted to see Arlong or Crocodile kicked in the butt). Wiper was annoying as hell. The only thing I really loved was the moving flashback of Norland and Karugara.

Eneru is not using his mantra then, he's just guessing and showing off. Besides, he got it all wrong, since Luffy is the sixth person alive. Not to mention he had to go himself to make sure of that number by defeating Sanji, Usopp and Kamakiri.

As for Satori, I'm not quoting the anime but the manga. One of the other priests also comment on Satori's defeat. I need to find those images back…

I hadn't got the first part of skypiea in manga but I do think it screwed up a bit too. Skypiea is the kingdom on the cloud, then how do the people on Skypiea plant and domesticated animal BEFORE 400 years ago when Upperyard came to Skypiea. How can human even go up there in the first place, CONFUSING.

The whole Eneru resetting Skypiea was a little confusing..I mean why is it evil to return everything back to the blue seas? Do the Why did they get worried about upperyard returning to the blue sea? Is that where the land come from? Did Eneru wants to go to the blue sea?

If Norland had visit Skypiea why did he not tell anyone about it? When did he go to Skypiea? I wonder if he could tell the king "I think the island got shot up in the clouds….Let's wait for the knock-up stream"

Oh Mr. Prince-Sanji, did you see any air fishes or Gan Forr farming a pumpkin patch? Skypiea don't need the Upperyard to get animals and plants.

Well, for one thing, everyone was going to DIE in the process. Secondly, it's become a special place for everyone who makes their home there. Imagine if someone was going to take a chunk of land that you lived in and ship it off somewhere else.

Anyway this reminds me; the other day I went to a Gamefaq.com genrel Dragon Ball fourms and do you know which arc the fans are pissed off with? Buu saga. I thougth people likes the Buu saga but majority of fans complian about the stupidty of the saga. Now I see the Skypiea saga is bashed by fans of One Piece. What a coiniance.

I agree wholeheartedly, its the series biggest weakness, though only Pell has ever really pissed me off…..all the same....

Considering Satori is a lowly priest I doubt he was fully trained on the mantra, same goes for the other priests. You can't expect the same from him that you can with Ener.

The 5 people prophecy was just a guess from Ener, it had nothing to do with Mantra. It was just his hypotheisis, and he was damned close.
And as such I don't think the Mantra is future reading, but a people sensing and mind reading thing. So Ener can't read a random attack if not even Luffy knew what it was going to do.

He did have little black smudges on him here and there, at least in the manga.

You know they use the whole "rubber doesn't conduct electricity" thing a lot in pokemon. Also it's pretty much a given that rubber doesn't conduct electricity.

Well, the way it works is like this: electricity doies its damage because as it runs through a material (or a body) it creates heat. This can burn or melt the material. So if you hit a conductor which easily lets electricity through, it's very easy to burn/melt it if you use enough current. An isolator however doesn't have that many free electrons, so it will not (or barely) let electricity through. A normal human body is a good conductor, which is why we can get fried by electricity.

Now, the reasoning is that when Eneru hit Luffy with his electricity attack, the electricity hit him but since his body is rubber it didn't pass through it and did no damage. The flaw here is that there is an effect called "doorslag" in dutch (don't know the proper english term), which means that if you hit an isolator with enough current, it'll knock the electrons lose and the isolator will become a conductor. This is what should have happened with Eneru's 100 million volts attack on Luffy.

Another interesting fact, the rubber tires on your car is why a car never gets hit by lightning. In theory it could overcharge (doorslag) the rubber like I said above, but lightning always chooses the easiest target, and an isolator is not as easy a target as a conductor. So standing in an open field with a large metal rod (metal is an excellent conductor) in your hand is tantamount to suicide. A funny misconception about lightning is that lightning shoots down from the sky when it hits something.. while actually it pulls current from the ground upward, and kinda 'meets in the middle', but because it's so fast it looks like it comes from above. But when you get hit by lightning, it'll be coming from the ground.

Anyway, so far my scientific intervention :laugh: I'll stop now =)

BTW is Eneru still alive at the end of the arc or not? It showed him going toward the blue sea in his ship... i wasn't sure if that was a flash back or not... anyone know?

Yeah he was still alive.. people just don't die in One Piece, he got "morally defeated" by Luffy and went insane and flew to the moon

Speaking of Colby, I wouldn't be surprised if he was a formatable foe when Luffy meats him next. Like maybe he'll have eaten a powerful devil fruit or something.
