I honestly don't know what this manga is about or what, if anything, the mangaka (Kenju Tsuruta) behind it has done before. But I was attracted to the art style and so gave the first volume (linked above) a chance. It's good.

Edit: Oh, he did Spirit of Wonder. His art's definitely improved! So… more reason to read this.

As I said, I still don't know what it's about, really, but the premise is fairly simple: A sci-fi loving boy (well, 20ish, but still adolescent in many ways) in the '60s, full of the romantic inclinations and emotional turbulence of that age, encounters a beautiful girl on a boat. He's coming back from a bit of a wanderlust period, bla bla. Basically, this girl claims to have stored genetic memories from her ancestors - all of them - leading back 3 billion years. It seems like it might be a love story, or a sci-fi story, or some kind of magical realism piece. So far, if nothing else, I like the atmosphere that it captures, this sort of blend of lassitude and organic urgency that goes along with boats and young love. I'd recommend it, and would be interested to hear others' opinions.

          I trust Sea's judgement.

It looks like… maybe it's just the one volume? I feel really more than just a little cheated...

Baka-updates says there's a "sequel series" called Emanon's Wanderings (Sasurai Emanon), which I'd check out... except nobody seems to be scanlating it.

I read this a while back… it seemed like it was written to be a Oneshot, but it was a really good story with great art. I enjoyed it.

I called it wrong, so long ago. I guess this needs to be changed.

I read this some time ago and liked it a lot. It takes a certain kind of reader to enjoy this story I think, but if it's right kinda for you will find it fantastic.
About the rest of the manga that's not out there in English: It has been released as a webcomic and a comercial book at the same time in Japanese. Here's the homepage the mangaka posted it on.

I don't know Japanese so I can't find my way around there but at least some of the untranslated material is on there. These are the last pages of the last chapters. The manga finished just recently. (according to ann, so take that with a grain of salt)

I do agree it feels like this may have been written as a one shot initially and Wanderings of Emanon is not necessary to understand the plot. Its just exposition. I would still love to read it in English one day.

The sequel to this manga has been scanlated if anyone cares. Gantz Waiting Room released the full color Emanon's Wanderings side story and Kotonoha released Wandering Emanon '67, which pick up right after Memories of Emanon ended. The full color part has beautiful art and the more plot centric Wandering Emanon '67 really takes the plot up a few notches. Apparently the books the manga is based on have more material to cover, so hopefully we will get more of this great manga in the future.

I'm coming back to this and am keen to see where it went, after having only ever read the first one-shotty series. baka-updates shows Sasurai Emanon but there's no mention of '67 anywhere I can tell. Is that just folded into the latter expansion of the story?
