What is it that prevents the user of a Devils fruit from swimming, why can;t they do the movements, I don;t understand why….also can't they just use their powers to help them? Such as Luffy using the Gomu powers to stretch & grab something to bring him upward?
Swimming?

I think their bodies become heavier in water because of the Devil's fruits, so it's hard to move.

They cannot move. You still have your abilities intact but cannot use them yourself.
-
Losing the ability to swim is the "price" for gaining the power of a Devil Fruit. Devil Fruit users, when completely submerged in water, lose the ability to use their powers. The same thing happens when a SeaStone (or Kairouseki) touches them.
Note that being half-submerged (like when they are taking a bath, or when there is a flood) does not completely neutralize them, but they do suffer some handicap of not being able to move as agile as they normally can.
-
I'd say it's a good price, people don't swim very offen, but in a place like that you sometimes need to swim, so it's a pretty tough choice…

Since the one piece world is mostly water, I'd say it's a pretty big disadvantage. Actually to become a pirate when you have a DF is pretty crazy. If I ever got one.. I'd never set foot near the ocean ever again in my life
-
You can set foot in an ocean, you just can't jump in…
-
The world of One Piece has far more water than land, compared to our own Earth. Most of the places that we see are islands, and the most used means of transportation are boats. The ability to swim is therefore, pretty important.
Besides, being a pirate means that you have to be on a ship almost all the time. Being unable to swim is pretty troublesome.
-
Being a pirate means being on a ship for, hours, days, weeks, and monthes…
It's pretty hard when you can't swim, what if you have to abandon ship, your ass is dead... -
the thing is the devil fruti users lose enegery when they are in THE SEA. fresh water is fine for them to go in.
also they lose energy when they come in contact sea stone.
and yea they do pretty much become heavier but it doesent make it hard for them to move they CANT move. they lose all energy and have no control over their bodies.
so they are hammers in the sea like one piece has said many times.
-
They still can't swim in fresh water. Also, I imagine that Luffy is able to walk on the ocean floor as long as he isn't completely submerged. He usually does this when they drop anchor and arrive at an island.
-
They lose it when they are neck deep… Waist, ankles are alright, but since the whole OP world is mostly water, it's gonna be pretty hard to find my description..
-
it's supposedly based on real history where most pirates couldn't swim.
so there really didn't need to be sharks for a walk on the plank to mean death.and i no, i didn't just read that on wikipedia.
-
Nice info…. it leaves me thinking...
-
Yes, but wasn't there a scene where Luffy falls in & is flailing?
-
Yeah, what the hell was up with that??
-
Maybe it was a total filler screw up.
-
its a cursed fruit after all
there is nothing free
u have to pay a price for what u get and that is swimming, swimming is very important in a pirate life coz u are surrounded w/ water -
Maybe it was a total filler screw up.
No, that is in the manga also. That's when Higuma the bandit throws Luffy into the sea. Luffy already ate the fruit, but he's flailing on water… Now that's strange!
-

eh.. my point was that I would never get close to the ocean if I had a DF power, it's too dangerous, one mistake or misfortune and you're basically dead. Or atleast I wouldn't be sailing unless I really had to.
-
OH, so then, let me try to give a situation, what if the guy who ate the lightning fruit went into the water, could he activate his power underwater by turning himself into lightning, & this lightning is thouching water, it would maybe cause an explosion & propel him upward out of the water.
-
No because using your DF power requires using strength and you're completely drained of that when you get submerged.
-
Note that you don't completely lose your DF power when you drown. Just the ability to use them.
Example: When Luffy was rescued by Genzo and Nojiko, they are able to stretch his neck until it reached the surface. But Luffy himself wouldn't be able to do that.
Since Logia users c5hange into their elemental form at will, there is no way they can change in water.
-
That's the difference between paramecia and logia really.. paramecia changes your body permanently without any further conscious effort, while activating a logia power requires some sort of effort, which becomes impossible under water.
-
Oh, ok I understand. :)
-

Also, in Buggy's flashback, just after he swallows the fruit, he dives overboard to catch his lost treasure map, and is flailing.
The salt-water fresh-water thing is interesting./ I sort of wondered how Luffy could wash his hands… wouldn't they get stuck at the bottom of the sink and he'd have to walk away until they snapped out and broke free?
