Right now i am currently on Chapter 139 of One Piece. Pretty close to the part where they are in Alabasta. Now I can get a good deal on getting Episodes 1-209 of the show in Japanese with English subtitles.
Do you think it would be better for me to continue reading the manga first or go ahead and watch the show?
Throughout this month, we will be testing new features (like search) so you may experience some hiccups from time to time. We'll try to not be too disruptive...

If you have a good DSL/Cable connection, hop onto the Kaizoku-fansubs IRC channel and just leech your way up to the present episodes.

Personally I'd skip reading Jaya/Skypiea in the manga altogether & go ahead to the Davyback Fight, roughly Vol. 33 onwards onto Water 7. So you have a large chunk of the anime unspoiled, plus you have two exciting arcs to read through in the manga.

So are you getting the manga for free? If so, then you should stick with that and stay away from the HK DVDs. Keep your money for something else, like the original tankoubons :D.

OP Anime is just as good as the manga,so if you just watch the anime you wont miss anything major.

I don't think I'll be skipping any, I'd like to read it all ^_^
Well thanks, I mean I know the Hong Kong ones are kind of edgy but also KF only has up to Episode 132 and takes them forever to do anoter one. I know the whole "don't complain for something that's free" I'm only complaining because if I have another opition that's at least decent I'll go with it
Any suggestions where I could get further into the show that's not from KF?
Oh, that's cool. Yeh, I'm an avid reader of the manga & also a big fan of the anime. So I skipped a lot of Skypiea in the manga, so I could enjoy it in the anime & picked up the manga from the start of vol.33.
So I can have something new & unspoilt in both anime & manga, until I actually catch up on the anime of course… then yeh, I'm screwed.
But back on-topic, the only group/people who are that far, are the people who are releasing torrents of the HK subs, which seems to be half way through Skypiea at the moment.
I'll provide you with some links to the torrents if you want to skip ahead with the anime, but the quality is risky.

I actually don't mind the HK DVDs. Hell, last I heard, they were up to 206. They're pretty cool, considering the price they go for. I like the manga much more, though.
I think the one thing you SHOULDN'T do is skip Skypiea, in any medium. It's really awesome.

Well I don't see it as skipping, just delaying a bit.
But that's just me, people can read & watch One Piece however they want.

I wouldn't recommend skipping chapters, it doesn't do justice neither for the original work or the author. The cartoon and the comic aren't that different, there aren't any significant differences but only bunchs of little things. From a critical viewpoint the comic's better but I would say in this case it's just a matter of which form of media your are more confident. Personally I enjoy the comic a lot of more.
