OH YES!!! Luffy asked the question! we will now finally see if Jinbei will be a member of the crew or not!
Chapter 648: The Path Towards The Sun

So… two major things that MS got wrong.
1. No specific mentioning of Urahshima's box
2. The line should be "I wonder if we can fix it... BY/BEFORE the time of promise" (Seakings, re: Noah)MR got those right, although style-wise I prefer MS's...
Oh, and great find with all those things written on the citizens' shirts, Knuckle!

No, sacrifice means that the person would lose something.
Zoro lost absolutely nothing. While technically right, as Zoro did not die, this is wrong because he intended to.
It was by the grace of Kuma that instead of just killing Zoro he gave him a chance. But in his mind, Zoro had already made the sacrifice. He had accepted death to keep Luffy alive. That is a sacrifice. His living did not negate that at all.
-

It does when you try to compare it to Bon Clay @ Impel Down.
-
-
In terms of sacrifices, nothing beats Bon-chan in One Piece.
-
Ace sacrificed his life for Luffy..whereas, we don't really know if Bon clay actually died yet.
-

You're assuming that he died. For all we know, he still lives thanks to Blackbeard and his crew.
-

If we later find out Bon Chan is alive and still out there, does his SACRIFICE mean less?
Would Pell's sacrifice be better than Bon Clay's if Pell had died?
-
@Nex:
You're assuming that he died. For all we know, he still lives thanks to Blackbeard and his crew.
Knowing how the world of One Piece works, he's nearly defz not dead.
EDIT:
Perhaps he'll come back with robot legs or something?
-
I bet Tiger would feel that Jinbei is a better man than he could have ever been after his blood sharing with Luffy. It makes me want to cry just thinking about it.
-
Ace sacrificed his life for Luffy..whereas, we don't really know if Bon clay actually died yet.
On an even larger scale, Whitebeard sacrificed his life to save everyone at the war including Luffy (and Ace until he died)
-
If we later find out Bon Chan is alive and still out there, does his SACRIFICE mean less?
Would Pell's sacrifice be better than Bon Clay's if Pell had died?
Pretty sure he IS alive, and yes, the setup was simply better, IN MY OPINION. Bon-Chan's sacrifice just worked better for me than others. Except, possibly and only, Bellemere. Comes close.

Perhaps unnecessary baggage.
P.S. I don't think Zkaiser is talking about that. Him being destined to be a Pirate king in his belief has nothing to do with destiny itself but simply it being a shounen manga. On the other hand he is annoyed with unnecessary links like the straw hat he has. It takes away from the unique person Luffy is.
His smile is almost the same, he hears the voice of all things, he goes by the path Roger took, he deals with stuff in the same way and he even wears the same "stupid" hat.I think that is what Zkaiser is talking about. That it adds nothing of positive to the entire character of Luffy in fact it would be much more interesting if he was unique and diffrent from Roger. Not to mention that if he has the same will and destiny and so on, he might end up on the execution platform as well (oh well he did once, but you know what I mean)
Well Zkaiser will reply, but go easy on her till than
you know….... im getting this strange idea that luffy is actually gol d roger.
he travels back time and become known as gol d roger :D
*went back to work -
No, sacrifice means that the person would lose something.
Zoro lost absolutely nothingZoro lost his ability to fully contribute his strength to the crew, and the ability to even train properly for a long time because of how bad the injuries he sustained were. How do we define a sacrifice here? Losing something permanently? Suffering pain and not being able to function at his best for weeks isn't good enough?
Well, that's off-topic. On-topic, the last few pages were beautiful and I can't imagine a better way for Luffy to finally invite Jimbei. I've thought about exactly how it might happen before and this exceeded all the ideas I had thought up by a long shot. I don't truly mind that the blood transfusion was so plot-induced, even if I would have vastly preferred a stronger villain in this arc to not only legitimately justify it but add a great deal to the arc in the way of tension that actually feels genuine and entertainment / intensity. Not a fan of Luffy being bestowed by the heavens the same exact hyper-unique ability as Roger. I was hoping that Robin would fulfill the role of guiding them to Raftel for him and thus not require Luffy being identical to Roger in that respect, but nope. Really hope this destiny thing isn't played on too heavily, it will do the series no good. I'm starting to get this uncomfortable Kingdom Hearts vibe…

Knowing how the world of One Piece works, he's nearly defz not dead.
That is what everyone said before Ace and Whitebeard kicked it.
"Oh, Luffy'll save Ace, he won't die. Nobody dies in One Piece…" then BAM, He died. The chances of Bon being dead are now up in the air.
Because it's true, before Ace, nobody in OP died outside of flashbacks... except this guy.And Juvar, your poll should have had one more option.
"Jinbe will decline initially and then after a few chapters of exposition, will accept".
That's what I expect to happen.
-
Pretty sure he IS alive, and yes, the setup was simply better, IN MY OPINION. Bon-Chan's sacrifice just worked better for me than others. Except, possibly and only, Bellemere. Comes close.
I also don't think Zoro's was a good set up either, was just arguing that dying or not dying does not refute the action.
Zoro's was stupid though. Kuma an ally shows up and kicks the crews ass and then has Zoro do what he did. If he was an ally at all, why even bother showing up? Why not just leave when Moria lost? Or was he really planning on killing the crew back then, until he saw they were loyal to Luffy? I just don't really get it. He seemed to know who they were, he seemed to be an ally based on later events and knowing his revolutionary and Dragon connection. So why did he come and kick their ass and then leave Zoro's life up to fate?
-
Pell's flashback and death scene is up there with Mr.2. Zoro's to me just didn't have nearly the same emotional impact.
Maybe it was "cooler" and you could argue about the ramifications of each sacrifice til the cows came home but those just didn't touch me as deeply as hell's day off.
-
yeah im really not getting why people dont want jimbei to join? i mean come on! the guy just radiates awesome
is it because he was a former warlord and alreadyy uber strong?
-
At the end of this chapter, I could hear the sound track playing in my head. The ending made me tear up with the "join my crew" line.
-
How many blood types are there in real life?
I mean first we have Sanji have a unique blood, and now Luffy. Though Luffy's might not be as UNIQUE as Sanji's it was different than everyone else in the crew.
At least if Jimbei joins, Luffy and/or Jimbei now have a blood donor on hand. Sanji is still screwed.
And no idea on the rest of the crew what blood type they are if it is easy to get.
-
That is what everyone said before Ace and Whitebeard kicked it.
"Oh, Luffy'll save Ace, he won't die. Nobody dies in One Piece…" then BAM, He died. The chances of Bon being dead are now up in the air.
Because it's true, before Ace, nobody in OP died outside of flashbacks... except this guy.Except I don't think that was a set point when people would begin to do die. It was very necessary for those two to die for the development of the story. Bon? He doesn't need to die for the story to progress. Not to mention, all deaths in ONE PIECE have been very obvious. No one questioned whether WhiteBeard was dead. he just died. Same with Ace, and this guy. If someone's going to die, it seems that Oda would make it very obvious.
-
I have yet to point out how awesome Robin is in this chapter. I love her <3
-
People ask what role Jinbe would play in the crew when it's shown this very chapter… Luffy's emergency blood supply!
-
You know the whole idea of it being something related to those who have "D" in their name could play a role in how they can hear things like the sea kings talking. I don't think it's just a Luffy and Roger thing. At least thats how I'm choosing to think of, because I would also get kind of irritated if this was based purely on fate and destiny instead of a common guy who has crazy ambition and succeeds that way
-
Not sure if this has been mentioned yet, but would Luffy consider Jinbei as his brother now that Luffy has some of Jinbei's blood?
-
Noah = Pluton/Poseidon.

@CCC:

Oh, and great find with all those things written on the citizens' shirts, Knuckle!
I guess untill the raw is out we can't tell for sure, but in the MR translation they said something like "will THEY be able to fix it in time?", while MS said "will WE be able. . .". Which one is right??
WE or THEY?Also, in MS we have the minister of the right saying about the mermaids that "they don't quite remember the kidnaper's face", while on MR it's "they CLEARLY remember it's face".
Seriously, these translations are total opposites!!!! It's confusing as hell!!
Well, guess we gotta wait until the raw is out. . .
Oh, and btw, just something I noticed: probably the MOST intriguing part about the chapter, recieved little to no attention here. I'm talking about the Sea Kings dialogue. It was really important, full of info bits that I'm waiting for the real translation to see the exact things they said, but "that family's power", "times have changed", "the promised day". . .It's giving out a lot of details that maye lead to something interesting.
Also, forgeting to mention the Urashima's Box when it was specificaly mentioned in the manga before it's quite something.Anyways, I guess talking shit about Jinbe and Luffy being Roger 2.0 is more interesting.
-
@RobbyBevard:
If Jinbe was thin, or a girl, there wouldn't have been half as many arguments against him along the way.
Young…...?
Brook does not count, he is immortal :P
--- Update From New Post Merge ---
@RobbyBevard:
But not through the doors of Sunny.
They have a fish tank for a reason… :D

So the arc is just about over. It certainly had its moments, but I still didn't think it was as good as Oda's previous arcs. I really hope the next arc is better.
Still, I'd say Jinbei joining is now official. That is excellent news to me. Though Oda could still troll us next chapter.
-
NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO, fuck sakes, not jinbei.
decent chap,shit arc.
-
Very interesting chapter - The suddenness of the offer is a little weird but I see no point disputing it - Baring any unforeseen changes next chapter.
Welcome Jinbei the Big Blueberry Strawhat.
@Gia:
How can Jinbe become another Robin when hes done this?: http://www.mangareader.net/one-piece/619/10
True, Robin's raised her eyebrows but never had her eyes pop out. I can see Jinbe standing with rest of the guys and something surprises the crew, all men have the eye popping effect.
And Juvar, your poll should have had one more option.
"Jinbe will decline initially and then after a few chapters of exposition, will accept".
That's what I expect to happen. With the exception of Usopp and Robin, everyone else on the crew said no first, events happened and then they said yes. After Luffy saved her life when she was ready to die, Robin snuck abord the Merry and insisted on joning, saying along the lines of Luffy had a responsibilty to give har a place since its his fault she's still alive and Luffy agreed.
But on thinking of how Usopp joined…maybe Jinbe's joining will go that way. The current events with Jinbe have echos of what happened with Usopp=
The Strawhats help protect his beloved home island fighting side by side, even when he wasn't a member of the crew. It was after the bif fight that Luffy asked him to join.
That fits both Usopp and Jinbe. So mabe Jinbe will do like Usopp and accept immediately? We won't know until next chapter.:getlost:How many blood types are there in real life?
I bet Oda will get a lot of requests so the entire crew be revealed in a future SBS.
My question is that will it be kept to real blood types or will Oda have created some more blood types for his world?? After all real science does not limit his creations in the OP. -
EHHHHH?? Jimbei become Luffy's crewmate?? I heard the theories online but I never though Oda would go for it. I can't see him joining them though….I see another Vivi moment where country comes first. Now I really can't wait for next week.
-

Unlikely. Allow me to refresh your memory, Jinbei is unable to stay at Fishman Island so no matter how much he wanted to stay there and put the country first he couldn't nor could he do anything away from it when he is on the run from the WG with a bounty higher than Luffy's.
-
Why are so many people complaining about Jinbe joining? I think he's going to be a great edition to the crew.
-
I really like Jinbei so I have no complaints about him joining! What would blow my mind is if Caribou uses the gold he stole to buy himself into the Straw Hats! Thats probably not possible but lets see Oda work his magic. I don't care what anybody says, Fishman Island was really fun and Oda didn't lose anything.
-
Why are so many people complaining about Jinbe joining? I think he's going to be a great edition to the crew.
In part, it's butthurt. A lot of people expected someone else to join. Then when their choice didn't pan out (Hancock, Perona, Camie, etc) they decided that since theirs was the "Obvious choice" then nobody should join or that makes Oda a bad writer.
Not speaking for everybody, but I have seen Perona fans (Especially a certain someone) make that exact comment, so I know these people are out there.
-
People please stop bitchin'! Jimbei is now Nakama, and Luffy is meant to be like his predecessor!
-
If Jinbe joins next chapter, I hope they don't have a flashback again. He already had a good enough flashback in my opinion, if he had a traumatic childhood that would be cliche in my book. I also think I'd like Jinbe more than Chopper and Brook.
Also, Bon Clay isn't dead. Why would he be dead? That makes no sense.
And for me, Zoro's sacrifice was more meaningful. Because I like Zoro more.
Can we iron out spellings? I mean, everyone spells all the other SH's the same way, can we stop having four different spellings of Jinbe/Jimbe/Jinbei/Jimbei?
I'm not sure which one is right, although it's probably Jinbei..?
-
@Lazy:

How so? Not a loaded question, I'm just honestly curious.
I'm not sure which one is right, although it's probably Jinbei..?
Oda confirmed the spelling as Jinbe a while back.
-
Jinbe is the correct one. It's been spelled out.
-
@Lazy:
Also, Bon Clay isn't dead. Why would he be dead? That makes no sense.
He was about to face off against a man covered in chemicals so corrosive that they ate through solid stone, armed only with kung-fu, with absolutely no exit strategy.
How does that not make any sense that he would be dead. -
Sweet chapter.
And congrats to all those who predicted Jinbei would join the crew, I never thought a former Warlord/Former Warlord would join.
-
He was about to face off against a man covered in chemicals so corrosive that they ate through solid stone, armed only with kung-fu, with absolutely no exit strategy.
How does that not make any sense that he would be dead.Because obviously something happened right when that panel was cut off. You know for sure that Bon escaped with some level 6 criminal. Oda would never just close a character off like that. BUT, if he did die like that, that would have been one of the best endings of a character ever, so badass.
-
I'm telling you, he's the new queen of Level 5.5.
-
He was about to face off against a man covered in chemicals so corrosive that they ate through solid stone, armed only with kung-fu, with absolutely no exit strategy.
How does that not make any sense that he would be dead.A man who has the antidote to his own poison, who is a prison warden and usually locks up prisoners rather than kills them, and who was shortly defeated after we left the scene. I don't think he's dead.
-
I really hope Jimbei doesn't join.
-

I really hope Jimbei doesn't join.
That can have so many wrong meanings.
-
Besides the obvious themes of this chapter (Jinbe probably joining, blooming friendship between humans and fishmen, the ability of "hearing all things" and so on…) there was the conversation of the Sea Kings which really sparkled my interest and made me think about JoyBoy and the rest of the mysteries of Fishman Island, so i have a few thoughts about things which at this point of course are very theoretical, so you should be warned.
First off, everything we know for sure so far:
The Ancient Kingdom existed till 900 years ago, then there was the Void Century and 800 years ago the World Government was founded. The Poneglyphs were distributed around the world among the allies of the Ancient Kingdom to tell about what really happened in the Void Century, the position of the Ancient Weapons like Pluton and Poseidon and also even an apology letter from Joyboy to someone, whereof we just learned recently-> so Joyboy is clearly connected to both the Ancient Kingdom, Fishman Island and if we can trust Neptune´s words, also to Noah. Furthermore, people with the D.have some kind of connection to the Ancient Kingdom, too. Tom, Franky´s teacher, had the blueprints to the ancient weapon Pluton which were passed down in a line of shipwrights for centuries. So, now concerning the theory which i mentioned above:
The Sea Kings mentioned that Noah had to be repaired for the promised time but for that they need the help "of their kind, but the times have changed". My interpretation of this sentence is that "their kind" stands for humans and "the times have changed" has the meaning that the Ancient Kingdom doesn´t exist anymore. Furthermore, Noah probably was built by JoyBoy who belonged to the Ancient Kingdom and was one of their best shipwrights who also built Pluton and Poseidon. So the Sea Kings just assume that it will be hard to fix up Noah because the ones who actually built it were highly educated and also better than the rest of the world but at this point, Franky will play a huge role. If you all remember, Pluton was passed down in a line of exceptional shipwrights. My thought is that the root of these shipwrights also lies within the Ancient Kingdom and also JoyBoy who gave the blueprints of Pluton to his student who teached the methods of the kingdom´s shipwrights to his student and so on until Tom and Franky. So basically, Franky should be able to repair Noah.
Next point is the promise which Neptune and the Sea Kings mentioned. I assume that Ryuugu Kingdom was an ally of the Ancient Kingdom(thinking about the Poneglyph in the forest) and that JoyBoy promised to the Royal Family of Ryuugu Kingdom to help with quest of immigrating onto the surface, hence that would be the purpose of Noah. Furthermore, i take it that either the queen or the princess of Ryuugu Kingdom had the same ability that Shirahoshi has. That would certainly explain the chains on Noah. Finally, JoyBoy apologized on the Poneglyph because he obviously couldn´t help Ryuugu Kingdom with their task ( his kingdom was destroyed and maybe he even was killed).Although there are many assumptions i think the theory in itself is conclusive.
What do you guys think? -
lol
