When ANN posted news about the Chimera Ant arc starting, they showed the scan with the design of the king. The article writer referred to the king by his real name and the comments were all going "that's a spoiler! erase it!" which caused him to edit the article. But the name's just out in the open on this scan, wonder how those same guys will react, lol.

Well the first one that comes to mind is the battle system. Because nen is literally power created from the mind, raw power isn't the sole factor that goes into whether someone can win, and the flexibility of the system allows for conditions and limitations to be placed to strengthen abilities.

Not every arc deconstructs Shonen tropes but a lot of them tend to subvert the epic finale battle that close off most major story arcs. The one in the Hunter Exam is just brushed upon, York New doesn't end with an epic battle between Kurapika and Chrollo, they take a third option to end things, and Gon doesn't battle the Chimera Ant King at the end of the saga because Chairman Netero does it and even then the battle doesn't go exactly the way you think with it's ending in a third option as well. Despite that all three examples are really well done and the only thing it really messes up is having fighting games based on those arcs because well, no epic battle at the end of them (but you could pull off a game with the final battles of the Chimera Ant saga again you just won't be playing as Gon)
Oh and also I checked the Wiki and Hunter x Hunter is back to doing 3 and 4 chapters per episode. I guess the writers have just accepted the manga won't be back before the anime ends so they're just trying their best to end it with good pacing and the same quality it has had throughout.

A few examples…
The Hunter Exam doesn't climax with Gon climbing his way to the final round of a tournament. Rather, he achieves victory in the first round.
Kastro declares that Killua will one day fight him, then he gets dreadfully murdered before that can happen.
The introduction of the Phantom Troupe at a point where they are far stronger than the protagonists. Throughout the entire York New arc, Gon and Killua hardly fight the Troupe at all because they're way out of their league. They aspire instead to evade them and capture them through trickery. Moreover, Kurapica becomes the center of the story during the York New arc.
Greed Island is a place originally designed for one to improve themselves by adventuring, but is reduced to a cold, calculated battle by the players therein.
Novu, after being built up as extremely competent, flat out breaks down and refuses to invade the Chimera Ant Headquarters.
The story is largely devoid of Shonen-powerups, and when Gon finally pulls one out it doesn't push him to new heights, but leaves him as a shadow of his former self.
It's unpredictable stuff like this that keeps the story fresh. Hunter x Hunter offers an often interesting new take on Shonen tropes, and does with them as it pleases. And as for how it would be if it followed a generic shonen formula...it would be a lot more like a generic shonen. I don't know how else to answer that.

Yeah. People severely misuse the word deconstruction and I blame TV Tropes entirely
Even by simplified TV Tropes standards a "deconstruction" would have to take apart and be some sort of, god I don't know, examination of the inner workings of the mechanics far more thoroughly. That is to say it straight up engages cliches and then poses them with some sort of seemingly real world logic and then people beat off and call it clever and gritty or something most of the time and who cares it's a boring subject
That is not what HxH is and it's way better off for it. What Hunter x Hunter actually does is use the palette of tools from the common manga adventure drawer and prop them up… And then not play by the standards as one has come to expect a lot of the time. It's not unnatural the way it does it, in fact it's honestly really organic. It just takes a lot of familiar things and dodges expectations.
Easy example: The Phantom Troupe. They are set up like your usual diverse supergroup, to be taken down one at a time by our heroes in a linear order. The setup is sound but something different occurs: upon their first member being offed, they go straight up on the defensive. They mourn their fallen member, who several were very close to and loved, and they don't fall into the traps set up. Just one of their members dying was enough to drive a huge shockwave through the group. Several characters during this arc try to pull fast ones and in the end nobody really comes out ahead, with it turning into something very dissimilar to how villain groups like this are usually applied. They even straight up retreat and only two of them in the series have died.
The most obvious overarching thing is that the entire series has only had absolutely one arc that could even qualify as containing a lot of combat oriented elements.
It's not like HxH goes OKAY HERE IS WHAT EVERYTHING ELSE DOES AND WHAT I'M GONNA DO IS EVERYTHING DIFFERENT. That sounds too contrived and forced an idea. it's just… different enough

I think they just slowed down because they wanted to have Kite on screen more time. Once he died the pace became normal again.
I had forgotten how many times Gon and Knuckle fought…. I do remember thinking this part of the arc dragged a bit back when I first read it. Gun and Knuckle have like this insane amount of screen time and friendship building while Killua and Shoot's fight was barely shown

Subs for Phantom Rouge are out and I thought the movie was really amazing, defiantly up their in quality as York New and Chimera Ant and in way less time than either one.
The villain of the movie may just be the most sympathetic and understandable of all the Phantom Troupe members and it was really cool to see the true 4th member after all this time. The only problem is his Nen ability was overpowered despite being really awesome with no real conditions to how it works being given. Still an excellent movie though.

I'm confused?:wassat: There are two ways two enter the troupe, you defeat(well more like kill) a member and claim his place or the boss approves you.

I think he was a fake member in the sense that he never pledged his allegiance to the group and never really agreed to follow their rules. So I guess when he was making his scout promise he crossed his fingers behind his back.
To everyone else he appeared to be a member of the group however Hisoka knew that he was never really part of the phantom troupe hence why he gave himself a fake tattoo instead of a real one.

Well this kind of goes into what constitutes a real member and maybe people think about this very differently.
But I don't think being in the group just to fight their boss would be a very welcome attitude among the existing members which are mostly extremely loyal to chrollo. Then there is the fake tattoo thing which just underlines how whimsical hisoka was about his membership.
And yes in that sense he is a traitor so pretty much the reason why they've thrown him out and replaced him.
So it's basically the same as the Blackbeard/Shichibukai scenario.
As far as I'm concerned, I wouldn't say that that meant he was a "fake" member. I mean, supposedly he was still officially indoctrinated, regardless of what his intentions were. "Fake", to me, just seems to imply that he somehow infiltrated the ranks without ever actually being sworn in.
So yeah, I think "traitor" is a more accurate term.
EDIT: Also a little weird that they would let him apply the tattoo alone. Or, I dunno, maybe he asked them to mark in that one spot where he placed the texture.

Hisoka was a legit troupe member, but I think the point was that at "heart" he never was a true member. The other members all genuinely idolize and respect Chrollo, Hisoka was only there to murder him, that's why Kurapikas rule didn't affect Chrollo explaining the situation to him.
Nen reacts to these sentimental emotions, that's why you can make up such an specific rule like "this chain only harms the troup members"
The moment Chrollo realized that Hisoka never cared about the members and the whole idea of the spider he knew that he can talk to him without dying.

The plot appears to be canon, it doesn't overwrite anything said before and it fits neatly into the training period between York New and Greed Island. Plus it was based on scripts and manuscripts written by Togashi so there's that too.

That actually had me confused the first time I watched York New and Heaven's Arena but they knew he was the original #4, he managed to take his spot for killing him and became the new one. The reason he was fake was because they knew he wasn't really apart of their group because he agreed with their ideals but just for his own unknown purposes.
Guys I can't believe no one is talking about the pressing matter of how overpowered the villain was. He could have beat the Chimera Ant King himself if he had enough time to make the vessel he needs and get eyes for him. Seriously he was that strong.

All right, at this point it's just a semantics argument and determining what really qualifies a person as a "member" of an organization. I can see where you're all coming, but based on my own vocabulary, I think Hisoka's status could have been better defined. Of course, I should also go back and reread Yorknew and see how it all plays out again.
So was thinking about how since April Fools day wiped out my title, combined with my Togashi day avatar that will remain until the series is off hiatus. I've decided to make my title match up more with my avatar. It's a bit late, but hey, so is Togashi

It's about the original number four that Hisoka replaced. I'm not sure where it fits in, but it definitely is Chimera Ant safe. Togashi released a special chapter about Kurapika's childhood and meeting the requirements to leave the village before everyone gets slaughtered and describes his best friend a bit.

That's what I came up with anyways based on what Hisoka said at the end of the movie. I wish they had explained the conditions for his technique to work in the film because the fact that he didn't have any is the reason I was saying he was overpowered…

Pretty much, but since this is HxH, i was very disappointed by the movie, regardless. Story's absolutely forgettable and simplistic, something i'd expect from Fairy Tail and the likes. Not to mention it rehashed plot points and developments already touched upon enough in the series (like Killua's "curse").
Oh , and the Retz twist was so predictable that it made Killua look dumb for not realizing what she was.
Omokage was a huge "madman" cliche, not to mention terribly dumb. His ability should make him extremely powerful, since he could basically use any known skill from the other Ryodan members, but…all he did was fire Franklin's machine gun like a crazy maniac. Speaking of which, the fights not only lacked the series' smartness, they were also very underwhelming and poorly choreographed, even if nicely animated. Nothing impressive, though.

I don't think it does, there are too many problems if we try to make it fit in the small gap between York Shin and GI. For starters, Gon and Killua had only four days to train, and here they're travelling for at least three days. Kurapika and Leorio didn't leave York Shin (separate ways) until day two, giving the movie an impossible timeframe, considering they were both in the same city when the movie began, where they should be for at least one day already.
Another issue: the Ryodan was already playing GI at the time.

No. This movie is about the member which was replaced by hisoka, and should take place after yorkshin and before greed island.

How was it? She took them to their house how she was supposed to, where a trap was awaiting for them since Omokage wanted their eyes. Her "hunch", planned or not, ended up favoring Omokage; what she did by her own will was actually enjoying being with them.
And Gon realized she was a doll since their first meeting, which should become even more obvious after they learnt about the dolls and Omokage's ability, but Killua never did the 2+2.
