About HxH ending - even if it's this manga, I still think there would be an announcement for such thing.
And do you know terms of Togashi's contract? HxH can't be cancelled until Togashi decides to end HxH himself, no matter what.

Actually no, a manga ending can be pretty spontaneous where you won't even find out till the same week or maybe a bit earlier but nothing like 2 months in advance or something.
And do you know terms of Togashi's contract?
I'm pretty sure there's no clause like "we won't ever cancel this series" in any mangaka's contract.
HxH can't be cancelled until Togashi decides to end HxH himself, no matter what.
I'm pretty sure no one thinks that Jump is cancelling Hunter but that if it ends, it'd be out of Togashi's own volition because he's finished his story/sick/lazy/too busy playing Dragon Quest/insert excuse here.

Boom!
I really liked this chapter.
And the bottom text says the next chapter will discuss the zodiac's new orders.

The weak prior there was a note of "A big announcement next time"… but there was no real advance warning the biggest manga of all time was ending the next week.
Most Jump series don't really have announcements in advance that they're ending, though a lot of times you can tell by the tone of the series that it's wrapping up a few weeks in advance, at least. (But the distinction between arc ending and series ending is often tricky. Look at how the "Toriyama wanted to end it at the Frieza saga!" rumor persists to this day.)
And the bottom text says the next chapter will discuss the zodiac's new orders.
Will Luffy and Ace survive the flashback?
Seriously. Editor notes mean NOTHING, and are often completely stupid or wrong, and have no bearing on the actual content of the next chapter at all..

I thought the editor notes were in the upper left hand corner, the lines on the bottom right (the finger on page 17) explain what's going to happen next:
http://mangahead.com/index.php/Manga-English-Scan/Hunter-x-Hunter/Hunter-x-Hunter-339-English-Scan/
The Author (mainly Kubo) doesn't always hold true to them, but those usually do tell you what to look forward to.case in point: (although the editor's notes are on the bottom left this time)
http://www.mangareader.net/hunter-x-hunter/337/20 -
What should even been shown in the next chapter, if it would be a final one? What would you expect?
I for my self would be fine with this chapter as an end, it was really nice =)Also I think its more an wrapping up after an arc. It showed the special birds from this special place, that Spin bought (if I have it correct in minde) with Kaitos or Gings Help, so it was really fitting to end this arc with this shown to all of Gons friends =)

Generally Editor's notes are little tid-bits of knowledge to get you to come back the next week. A vague spoiler, if you will. In the case of Naruto it's usually 'Sasuke finds Itachi! Next Week!' to hype up the next chapter. The specific entry Robby keeps mentioning is an example of a… very horrible and strange note.
About the manga as a whole ending, I doubt it will. As Robby said it's sometimes hard to tell the difference between an arc ending and a story ending. This last chapter shows every alive character from the Chimera Ant arc, which could pass as an arc ending. What is scaring some fans is that it showed Mito and Kurapika, both having not been in the story in a while. This 'last glance' could very well be the last we see of them, and only fuels the fire of 'this manga is ending'. As much as I'd hate the manga to end - Togashi very well could, and might. You can't leave Dragon Quest alone for too long.
Edit: Did Novu lose his hair? In that hat it kinda looks like it. lol
-
Huh…Well. I'm not sure what to make of this chapter. The art was better, but then no dialog lol. It did feel kinda like how YYH was ending. But hopefully that's not the case.

Nah, we're talking about two different things. The editors note kind of just gives the conclusion of the chapter some "unf" or hypes up the next chapter ("Why Neji Why?" and "A devastating attack"). I'm talking about the finger thing pointing at the bottom that LITERALLY says what's going to happen next week.
Those aren't even there on most chapter in SJ, usually they're there to let the reader know the story is not concluding at the moment. They usually appear around an arc's end.
Notice how there's only an editor's note on this Bleach Page, but no finger:

Hotlinking to the site doesn't work.

Ah yes. I've noticed those near the end of an arc as well, never knew what they were called. Finger, huh? Thanks. Yeah, then by that it definitely gives me hope for a continued story.

A pretty great chapter. But it is hard to define - a new beginning or an ending?
At least one thing Togashi stated for certain - Kurapica has gathered the eyes of his people. Is that an end to his revenge? Or he just changed his priorities?
Impression, or Kurapika is turning into a true Sasuke-esque character now?
Kurapica did remind of Sasuke, though. Bad sign…
May be I'm missing something here, guys. So explain this to me. How do you figure that Kurapica suddenly became an immature, easily manipulated parody of a character with motivationand depth of an insulted five year old from to pictures of guy in a suit looking at the recovered eyeballs of his lost clansmen?
Edit: Did Novu lose his hair? In that hat it kinda looks like it. lol
He looked like that since he has gone to the palace.
Notice how there's only an editor's note on this Bleach Page, but no finger:
Those are editor notes as well. It's just that not every translator rightfully bothers to translate and not every mopper bothers to redraw the gibberish that editors paste on the covers, first and last pages.
You pay these no heed.
Also think of this: usually by the time the next chapter arrives to the editorial department, the previous magazine has already gone to the printing.
-
Oh god i just saw the Kuruta's eyes.
Oh man…
-
Is that last page implying the king survived?
The last page shows his corpse's hand holding Komugi's corpse's hand. So, no.
Awww, there's Leorio. But, ummm, where is he? Back home? Though it's sweet of him to still be trying to contact Kurapica. He does worry about his friends a lot.
-

I think since he's not answering Leorio's phone call, something is definitely bothering him. Either that, or he's giving his clan a funeral and just wanted some silence.

Ah, okay. I was just saying since the editor's know what's coming next, and the "next chapter finger" things are usually right that they are usually an indicator that the story is at least going to continue one more chapter.
-
How big was Kurapika's clan? I only spotted ten or so eyes… I doubt his vengeful journey is over.
-
May be I'm missing something here, guys. So explain this to me. How do you figure that Kurapica suddenly became an immature, easily manipulated parody of a character with motivationand depth of an insulted five year old from to pictures of guy in a suit looking at the recovered eyeballs of his lost clansmen?
Because he's only collected ten since September of 2000.
When you think about it, the Scarlet Eyes are treasures. They've already all been sold off and they're worth billions. Even professional Hunters can't accumulate that sort of wealth. It makes sense that Kurapika can't regain them. So it's pretty certain that he'll dedicate himself to revenge. I wonder if Togashi will allow him to be mature enough to just let it go in the end.
Remember that conversation that Kurapika has with Killua in Trick Tower? Killua asks him if he's ever killed anyone before and whether or not he's afraid to. Kurapika responds that he's never really thought about it before.
Kurapika's initial ambition is to become a Blacklist Hunter, who work on the side of the law. But he joins the mafia instead.
Now the first time that Kurapika kills someone is in the Yorknew City arc–Uvogin. Instead of capturing him, he tortures and murders the man. What's interesting about it is that if he feels any emotional distress as a result, he doesn't show it. He doesn't change his expression after he's murdered someone. The next time we see him, he looks a bit sickly. One might think that it was due to the horror of killing a man for the first time, but the real reason isn't actually revealed until after Pakunoda dies. The Nen of the deceased lingers after death. Kurapika hasn't emotionally matured at all. Though Gon tells him that he should focus on regaining the eyes of his clan, it's somewhat proving to be a lost cause.
I'm gonna make some predictions. Gyro will appear next chapter. Ging will be killed by him after the timeskip and there will be absolutely no way for him to return like Kite did. Gon will have to deal with the death of the person most important to him.
-
@Mr.:
Because he's only collected ten since September of 2000.
And in the manga the entirety of greed island, ant arc, and the election arc its only been a couple months. He's doing pretty well, all things considered.
-
Good chapter. Pretty cool how Togashi chose to tell the story with no text, though it did make things a bit difficult to understand at times. And of course the series ending still does seem to be a very real possibility, but I guess we'll have to wait and see.
-
@RobbyBevard:
And in the manga the entirety of greed island, ant arc, and the election arc its only been a couple months. He's doing pretty well, all things considered.
Kurapika is someone who has been so traumatized and hurt by the massacre that he's blinded by his revenge. After they rescue Killua from Heavens Arena, Kurapika starts spinning out of control. While he has good intentions, his hatred supercedes his desire for justice. If he really had justice in mind, he wouldn't have killed Uvogin in the first place. That was murder, plain and simple. There was nothing noble about it.
What makes me wary about his future is the fact that he's completely unharmed. I assumed that the reason as to why he didn't visit Gon in the hospital was because he was in a dangerous situation. But the truth couldn't have been more opposite. Combined with the fact that he hasn't answered or bothered responding to any of Leorio's calls, I'm pretty certain that he's finally done it. Kurapika has severed ties with all of his friends because he doesn't want them to be involved with him anymore. He's aware that he's going down a dark road, but he doesn't care. He's out for blood.
-
@Mr.:

Exactly. He has collected ten of the invaluable, billions worth treasures. Which implies that he has given his utmost effort and all of his time to accomplish this goal, rather than pursue revenge.
After his second encounter with the Spiders, the death of Uvogin and Pakunoda, he started questioning himself and his revenge goal. A year in-universe passes. And we see him having some sort of spiritual funeral ceremony executed for their sake, as in sort of finishing touch to his quest.
Does this imply that he has abandoned his goal of revenge? Not necessarily. But it does indicate he judged it was worth to spend his time recovering the eyes, even after he made himself known to the Spiders.
-
I still don't understand why people keep thinking there needs to be another giant arc with Kurapika fighting the Spiders to the death.
The entire point of the Yorknew arc was Kurapika realizing that revenge wasn't the best course, that the Spiders were human too (and that most of the current group wasn't even around for killing his clan), and that revenge isn't always worth the costs (he could have killed the leader outright but Gon and Killua were more important.) and that killing them doesn't actually get his family back.
Plus, he showed that in a 1 on 1 he can easily destroy even the strongest of the spiders. (And even Uvogin he didn't actually kill. Uvogin killed himself. Ditto for the second in command.) That story was as done as it needed to be. All the emotion and character development is done, and the action is showed at its highest level too. He doesn't NEED revenge anymore… and if he sets his mind to it, he can eliminate the spiders... and the spiders know to not kill him if possible due to death revenge nen. There really, honestly, isn't any reason for them to meet ever again, or any need for the readers to see such a confrontation. (Chrollo getting his nen back might be a thing, but as Hisoka is still alive and kicking and was there when Chrollo would have gotten it back...)
That he has has not only found, but actually collected, 5 pairs of eyes, (Out of what, 36?) in under a year, is a POSITIVE sign, not a negative.
-
@Mr.:
Because he's only collected ten since September of 2000.
Which means he's collected nearly a third of them. There's only 36 pairs left in the world. (Or a sixth, depending on whether there are 2 eyes in each of those jars; there appear to be only one per jar, but the jar we saw several times in Yorkshin had 2).
http://www.mangareader.net/207-14110-5/hunter-x-hunter/chapter-101.html
And while the nen of the deceased does linger, we didn't have any indication that Uvogin had caste any nen on Kurapika. In fact, I'd think it out of character for him to do so. He's the kind that likes fighting with his bare hands, with his own strength. He really seemed like the type to just use nen to boost his own natural abilities–a reinforcement user to the bitter end.
So I interpreted Kurapika's paleness and the hollows in his cheeks as a sort of horror that he did actually kill. The entire Yorkshin arc shows us a Kurapika who is struggling between the past (revenge) and the present (the lives of his friends). In the end, he vocally assures Gon that he will now be going after the eyes of his comrades. But, I can honestly still see him wanting to go after the Ryodan, despite what he said.
I do agree with you on the point that he's headed down a dark path, and doesn't want to involve his friends further.
-

The things about Kurapika's revenge is that the whole Phantom Troupe knows how his Nen works and they're not dumb enough to be at a disadvantage when the come face to face with Kurapika. So his whole plot revenge scheme isn't taken care of or else Pakundo's death would have been pointless. Maybe throughout his journey in collecting the eyes his feelings of revenge started reemerging. The whole Ryodan/Kurapika ordeal is still unanswered.
People stop being pessimistic and take it one chapter at a time. When the story ends it ends. After every chapter all i read is chapter is HxH going to end soon. Theres no proof in that. Until Togashi announces that HxH is coming to and end or is ending next chapter than i'll believe it. Until than it's all rumors. :ninja:

Except for his track record. YuYuHakusho's incredibly sudden ending, 7 years worth of hiatuses, a history of "illnesses", and scribble art are all against him. Plus the actual content of the story at the moment.
If he were almost any other author, the speculation wouldn't be so lingering or persistent. It keeps coming up and sticking and feeling possible because… of what he's done before.
That said, next chapter will be the deal maker in terms of its continuing, hitting hiatus, or if Togashi is serious this time. Next week is the biggie. If there's no hiatus after next week, (the chapter that would finish out the next volume) I think we can breathe a collective sigh of relief for some time to come.

Yes he does have a track record, but there is a reason why he stopped Yu Yu Hakusho and why it ended so abruptly. He isn't in the same condition he was in with Yu Yu Hakusho. HxH is facing different problems than what he had before. He would have ended HxH a long time ago if he didn't want to continue it. So i don't see the same thing happening with HxH. =[]

Why do I feel like the story JUST started? Like we just met all the characters and NOW the story will begin? Is that just me? Is that odd? O-o
Also for a slight moment I felt a time skip coming. but maybe I was wrong. >_>
-
I just about Hisoka's desire of fighting a full potential Gon/Killua.
So every HxH side story might be resolvable in a couple of chapters but not this.
Thus, unless Togashi becomes an ass and decides to stop it for the lulz there's no way the Hisoka matter can be resolved just like that.

I didn't actually give that sentence much thought, it was basically a gut feeling based on 2 still images of him. Just he looked all dark and gloomy.
Oh, and he could answer Leorio's calls. Asshole.
There, you have it: he's not catching the fucking phone while freaking Leorio is calling him. When Leorio calls you, you answer.
-
Nice silent chapter, AHA See, Togashi can pull it off with no single word. Nicely done.
I know it's just an editor note and all, but it still got me wondering. Impatiently waiting for next week's chap.

I'm not quite sure what's happening with Gon and the birds? Is this some type of discovery he's made as a Hunter? That's my interpretation for now at least.

and you keep saying this guys the strongest but when they said that I was under the impression they were talking about physical strength, about their abilities to break the chain without nen powers
It said at the end "Next issue, a new chapter starts" as in this is the "send off" to the Ant Arc. Were A3C's scans that bad that they didn't even translate that?

Cool chapter. Reminds me of when Eiji did a Crow chapter in Bakuman without any words just to show that he could.
Amazing how Togashi gave us no indication about whether the manga is planning to continue or not though…the tension mounts.

Maybe… he really wasn't just playing Dragon Quest.
-
Exactly. He has collected ten of the invaluable, billions worth treasures. Which implies that he has given his utmost effort and all of his time to accomplish this goal, rather than pursue revenge.
But he doesn't look happy. He's not even willing to see his dying twelve-year-old friend in the hospital–someone he owes quite a debt to. The reason as to why he didn't kill Chrollo or Pakunoda in the Yorknew City arc isn't because of some moralistic desire. No, it's because his friends would have died. By cutting himself off from his friends, he can now devote himself to revenge. He's already started to go off of the deep end. He's stated since chapter 7 that he was willing to compromise his morals in order to regain his eyes, but pay attention to just how much his goal has changed since it started.
During the Hunter Exam arc, his goal was to capture the Phantom Troupe and that's it. He desired to arrest them for their misdeeds, not to kill them. But his rage is much deeper than he initially portrays. He almost kills Majitani in Trick Tower for masquerading as a member of the Phantom Troupe. His line "Never mention the Phantom Troupe again. Otherwise, I will kill you." isn't just something that sounds cool–it's supposed to be taken seriously (it's how Togashi writes his characters).
Melody is the first in the series to truly understand how Kurapika really feels about the Phantom Troupe. She hears how violent he is inside. She understands that he's willing to murder anyone who stands in the way of his goals. He almost allowed Gon and Killua to die for his cause because he gives into his wrath. By severing ties with them, he doesn't have to worry about that sort of situation again.
After his second encounter with the Spiders, the death of Uvogin and Pakunoda, he started questioning himself and his revenge goal.
No, he actually didn't. The only thing that Kurapika learns from the events in Yorknew City is that his desire to protect his friends is detrimental to his desire for revenge. He had the leader of the Phantom Troupe in front of him–the man who orchestrated the massacre of everyone he knew and loved, leaving their bloody corpses with empty sockets. He can't get over his hatred. He wants to kill the man. The only reason why he doesn't is because Kurapika doesn't want to lose anyone he loves again.
Chrollo realizes this is his fatal flaw, but it seems as though Kurapika did as well. He was too foolhardy. Blinded by rage, he almost lost his friends. He still paid a huge penalty–his abilities are known by the Troupe now. Kurapika can't risk that again.
Which means he's collected nearly a third of them. There's only 36 pairs left in the world. (Or a sixth, depending on whether there are 2 eyes in each of those jars; there appear to be only one per jar, but the jar we saw several times in Yorkshin had 2).

Oh, let me explain. Whenever someone dies holding a deep grudge, their Nen "curses" the one against whom the grudge is held. This is why Terpsichora was able to Manipulate Neferpitou's body despite having his head destroyed.
The first anime series changed the reason as to why Kurapika is sickly; it's an anime-only thing, if you've seen it. The 1999 series has Kurapika feel bad for his murders (and even goes so far to imply that his anger is due to being indoctrinated by the Kurta clan), but he doesn't in the manga. Since the manga hadn't revealed that detail until after the anime series had already finished airing, the director was forced to infer that Kurapika was sick because he was disgusted with himself.
-
kewl said that the editors note basically says this isn't the end, it's the begging of a new arc
based on the editor's notes, hxh won't be ending soon
Like I keep saying. Editor notes don't mean SHIT. I keep pulling out the Luffy and Ace example because its the msot ridiculous and obvious one, but I can't even begin to count how many times an editor note has said "Next chapter focuses on this character!" only for that character to not even be in the chapter, or "the battle concludes!" only for a battle to go for another volume and a half. A few weeks ago a Bleach chapter ended saying "next time, a flashback about this character!" and then there was nothing of the sort.
The editor notes are written and printed before they even GET the next chapter, and are complete guesswork on the editor's part, how often and consistently they're stupid and/or wrong is evidence of that. While yes they could ask the author whats coming next week, its pretty clear they usually don't, they just say whatever the hell.
"The next chapter will focus on what these characters do next" doesn't mean "absolutely new arc!" It just means, if those characters even show up in the chapter, it'll be resolving what they want to do.
Just because a series has a lot of loose ends open to the reader's imagination to fill in the blanks, doesn't by any means guarantee that it'll ever actually be seen. A series can be incredibly open ended and give a "the world is bigger than you think and life goes on for everyone in here" rather than "here is every last detail possible wrapped up neatly in a bow." If you want proof, go look at Negima! The author has known for the last year that he was wrapping it up, and he's been doing nothing but laying new plot threads and ideas chapter after chapter, while resolving very little.
Togashi is very unconventional, there's no reason to believe he's ever going to show anywhere near all the things he's promised. Do you really thing there's going to be an arc devoted to finding the evil music? Nope, thats going to be an off camera thing at best… if its ever resolved at all. Did we waste time watching Kurapika get those first 10 eyeballs? Nope, off camera.
It's pretty moot anyway, like I said, next week will be the deciding chapter one way or another. As the last chapter for a volume, its the place to end the series, go on hiatus, or... actually begin a new arc proper. We'll see in a week.
But don't for even half a second believe the editor note about anything. There's a reason scanlators don't usually bother translating that nonsense, and its not in the trades at all. Because its completely made up crap that usually has no bearing on anything.

your example about ace doesn't apply. just because the editor's notes are complete fail in some circumstances doesn't mean they are forever useless.
in this chapter's case, it is CLEAR that the editors know what the next chapter is all about. why else will they mention the zodiac's orders? they could have written something vague like, "a surprising development!", instead of mentioning a specific character group in the manga. and if you remember in chapter 337 the editor's note mentioned something like, "after how many years, what was exchanged between gon and ging was…?" and guess what, next chapter gon and ging met. these to me are indications that the editors know what's going to happen next chapter.
and honestly, there's no need to be so rude and worked-up about it.

With Killua having just left Gon for what may be at least an arc or two, it seems like it'll be forever before we see the original four together. Unless we are hit with a time skip and Killua's time away from Gon is handled during that time

Ahem .
@RobbyBevard:I can't even begin to count how many times an editor note has said "Next chapter focuses on this character!" only for that character to not even be in the chapter, or "the battle concludes!" only for a battle to go for another volume and a half.

Robby…you're jumping the gun. This chapter was the end to the Chimera Ant arc; not the series. If the series does discontinue in WSJ, I'd be willing to bet that it'd appear in Jump SQ with older characters.
I've been going back in my mind and sort of thinking about Kurapika as a character and his history. Is anyone else curious as to the reason why he took an interest in Gon so early? Do you think that Gon reminds him of a friend he knew whom died when he was twelve? The same goes for Leorio, actually.

That was an interesting chapter. A little annoying since there's a bit that you've gotta imply/remember from a WHILE back (like YEARS) and such, but it's nice to see when mangakas are able to do stuff like this - shows a kind of mastery, I think. Maybe Togashi did it to make up for the scribbles of weeks past?
Anyway, that last panel was very worth it. That whole relationship is what made the Ant Arc for me and that final shot is just so worth it after the years that went into it. I know I teared up.

I love the rag tag random group of heroes we have in this series. The main 4, plus Knuckle/Shoot, Smoke guy (morau?), Palm, the Chameleon and Octopus, Biscuit, freaking Kaito. Theres a bunch of other supporting cast that could be lumped in. But I'm starting to wonder if the main 4 is no longer the main 4 and we're going to have like a main 7 or 8

I actually think it would be kinda neat (since Killua decided to bail) if we get to see Gon and his dad explore the New World for a bit.
EDIT: I didn't read the latest chapter before posting. So scratch that.

Is not like if there was a lot of text, but if you want to read another version of the chapter, translated by kewl0210, here you are:
