I don't get why people want Inoue to continue it. It's over, it's a masterpiece, why risk ruining it?
Besides, Vagabond and Real are both fantastic manga. I want to see more of them.
There is no part 2, because is perfect how it is
Personally because I want to read more about rukawa and sakuragi. In a nutshell, the characters he created are so real I want to follow their story and see how they end up.
Here is a one shot of Slam Dunk
http://www.batoto.net/read/_/93682/slam-dunk_choneshot_by_fruity-explosive-translation
I think I need to re-read it too. I can barely remember the story besides the main points and that it's a fucking masterpiece.
Inoue is a god.
I just finished the second read through of this series.
This is a masterpiece shounen, maybe of manga in general. I was confused at my first read through, thought Sakuragi's career was over, but it turns out he just needed rehab.
I'm confused though, Mitsui is a third year, why is he still on the team?

Mitsui going to remain to participate upcoming winter game. That's why he is still there.
Do you think he'll go to college? I always wondered, I know Akagi did, even though he had to take the exams? Even though missing some years to improve his skills.
It's pretty much give at the end Sakuragi and Rukawa will be going to America after high school years.

Mitsui participated the winter game because he is aiming to get into college by getting scout (like Akagi). Since his grade isn't good, he plans to show his skills during the winter game so he can get a scout.
Plus, Akagi didn't get into the college which he got scout from. That's why he has to take exam to different university.
Ah I see. Explains some things then.
With Miyagi's height he'll probably never make it to college or professional level, really glad they didn't address that in the end, and just made him captain and person to look out for in a high school level.

I'm not so sure about that. It is difficult for college or professional level in America, but I think he should work in Japan.
stupid toei animation they didn't continue this joint now i have to read instead

I never got why Slam Dunk, being as popular as it was (and still is), had the anime cut short.
Takeshi Kusao as Sakuragi delivered one of the funniest anime roles i ever seen.
Looking at Toei series, it looks it had more to do with them being full of series, both in terms of the TV Channel and the company, and wanting to make Hell Teacher Nube. That at the time was a new rising popular series.
At the time Slam Dunk ended Toei had:
TV Asahi:
Fuji TV:
I believe that they didn't wanted to increase the number of series in production to 6 and that TV Asahi wouldn't allow more than 3 series on it. Giving that Sailor Moon and Gokinjo Monogatari were timeslots with content targeting girls, I don't believe any would be changed by Hell Teacher Nube that was a Ecchi series(Also obviously Sailor Moon wouldn't be removed).
Fuji TV for what I know always only provided 2 timeslots to Toei, and I don't believe they would remove any of the legendary titles they had.
If what I said above is right, than right now the company is bigger, they right now have:
TV Asahi:
Fuji TV:
TV Tokyo:
ONA
Right now has 7 titles, but probably will end with 8 titles(robot Girls z+ is a mini series) next season(unless some other title ends. Maybe Majin Bone).
I'm sure pretty soon it'll get a reboot. It's a crazy popular shounen that has till this day still tested the power of time to maintain it's status as one of the greats.
they could have made an OVA or something to contunie the series
I'm sure pretty soon it'll get a reboot. It's a crazy popular shounen that has till this day still tested the power of time to maintain it's status as one of the greats.
I'm not sure. It is like almost 20 years since the manga ended; so, I doubt their going to be a reboot. If someone did think about reboot, then there should be one already.
I heard around these forum that Inoue had his own studio. If that is true probably he right now has the rights of the series and so Toei can't do anything more with it? Or maybe they some time to do an anniversary.
I'm totally hoping that by the end of the blueray box-sets they announce something about it!

Well, even if Inoue has his own studio (I'm not sure he actually does), I don't think he has time to do it because he is currently working on two series. Unless he is super-rich and able to afford every staffs and equipments which use for making an animation.
Well he said Vagabond is almost done, hell it was supposed to be done two years ago, but he just doesn't have the time to finish it.
Well he said Vagabond is almost done, hell it was supposed to be done two years ago, but he just doesn't have the time to finish it.
Well, even though, I think Inoue having his own studio is just a rumor. Like if there is his studio, then did his studio actually produce something? I didn't heard any animation done by his studio, and there really isn't any proof about the existence of his studio (at least in my knowledge).
So, if that information is just a rumor, then there is no meaning about whether Vagabond is near the end or not.
Has it ever been stated who won National Championship?
Has it ever been stated who won National Championship?
I believe Meihou Kyougyou won the championship.
While i enjoyed reading Slam Dunk i must admit that sometimes Hermachi (sp) got me annoyed with is antics especially when the moment is suppose to be one that is serious, he killed the tension many times for me making me want to skip over is scene, i must say though that when is genious side kicks in and he does something amazing it left a good feeling.
^I think one of Slamdunk's more interesting aspects is that it's never too serious, a bit like OP. Even something like Sakuragi shaving his head, a major character moment, a major change in a main character's design, and so it was quite a bold move. But in the one panel volume comments, Inoue simply jokes that it's easier to draw.
One thing I'm not sure about, though, Is Rukawa still playing for Shohoku in competitions and the like? Or is he simply on the All Japan and nothing else?
did someone color chapters of slam dunk like dbz naruto jojo and one piece?
Rukuwa stills plays for Shokoku.
One of the best developments in the story was when Rukuwa admitted he had to go all out against Sakuragi to win as he did.
Bump
I started reading this series a few months ago and I marathoned the whole thing in under a month, I was surprised at how attached I got to the cast and how tense some of the games were, even when the results of some were fairly predictable in hindsight. I usually don't like giving things 10s unless I've read/watched them at least twice but that final game, man! One of the best things I've ever experienced in the medium, there were plenty of times where I almost cheered/cried just like the characters did and by the time I saw the last shot I was actually sweating and had to go wipe my face off. Like some others in here said there doesn't need to be a continuation, the finale was perfect as is
In terms of how much I care about the characters, Slam Dunk is easily one of the best.
I don't think I've ever wanted a fictional character/team to succeed as much as I have the Shohoku team - especially during that last game.
Collecting opinions on the matter, because I´ve heard a lot of good things from this manga.
How would you compare it to other sports mangas/animes you have read/watched?
^sport manga or not
this is hands down the greatest manga I've ever read in my life
Collecting opinions on the matter, because I´ve heard a lot of good things from this manga.
How would you compare it to other sports mangas/animes you have read/watched?
It's easily my favorite sports manga, and the only one to be in my personal top ten. Then again I've only experienced five or so sports manga (Ippo, Kuroko, Prince of Tennis, Haikyu, Eyeshield 21).
One thing that made Slam Dunk stick out to me was that pretty much every game was memorable and felt like it had weight. Most sports manga in my opinion tend to be highly enjoyable when your watching them, but at the end of the day a lot of the games tend to be one big blur.
For example I love Ippo to death, but apart from a few key matches I feel like I don't really remember too many of his specific matches.
And then the cast of characters is phenom-enal (pun intended for Viz readers). Each member of the team could be someone's favorite character (mine being Mitsui), with a really good protagonist. It's also hilarious, but can get serious with some major developments. The "I want to play basketball" at the end of volume eight was one of the first times a manga brought me to tears.
Sometimes I flip through volumes, and every time I go through the last one my heart always beats faster and I still feel the level of excitement I did when I first read it.
The manga wasn't too short, didn't drag on and had a truly satisfying ending.
Sorry for the disorganized response - I just put the thoughts in the page as they came to me.
The more I re-read Slam dunk, the more I like it. Even the parts which I didn't like at first, like Vol 7 & 8 when they're just punching each other, has it's own interesting charms. I need to go read REAL for a second time, I'll bet I'll suddenly really like it the 2nd time round, just like Vagabond.
I would like to mention a few of Slam Dunk's weaknesses, since Slam Dunk's praises write itself. Sometimes it's a little repetitive, like Akagi's amibition was held back by mediocre teammates, and now he has an awesome crew. But on the other hand, it's also interesting in itself to see Inuoe improve on the smae thing, taking a similar idea, and doing it differently, and better! The Sannoh game, for example, had Mitsui struggling with stamina, just like the Shoyo one, but the way Inoue does the same thing twice shows how much he himself has grown as a mangaka and whoops I'm not actually pointing out flaws.
And also sometimes the characters, like Miyagi, are a little flat. Even Mitsui doesn't seem to do much after his flashback. His hair is too plain to be noticed!
I should read more sports manga, but that's not where I'm feeling right now.
Completely blown away by this series. Marathoned it in a couple of days, having never read a sports manga or watched a game of basketball in my life, and its easily one of the best series I've ever read. Every praise for it has already been said. To some extent I would've liked to see Shohoku rematch Kainan, and play against Aiwa and Meihou (Meihou in particular seemed like it was being set up for a game), but I can see how the series would've been too long that way. I also really liked Sakuragis pompadour early in the series, but its probably a bit inconvenient for the sport
Anyway, phenomenal series. If Real is even half as good I should have plenty of fun reading that, and I'm also inspired to read more sports manga as well

Real is a fantastic series, just not quite on the same wavelength as SlamDunk.

You shouldn't really think Real is sports series. It does focus on sports (basketball), but it focuses more on human drama (not really pure sports series like Slam Dunk or any other sports series). It is still good series, but you shouldn't expect something like SD.
Koro-sensei Quest! Chapter 2 and Chapter 2.5 are out.
and the superior version of chapter 174
Thank you to the Mach 20 guys for all that you've done for this series!
If I had to hazard a guess, I think we have 4 maybe 5 chapters left before the end. I have faith it will be a satisfying one… and I'm really curious and excited for whatever his next manga will be.
Slam Dunk actually did have the cover for it's final chapter. I can't think of any others though..

Can I take a little off topic moment since Slam Dunk is on topic? I just finished the manga and I'm.. Well the mixed feelings are intense
! I can't get my head around why Sakuragi had to get that back injury after all the crazy crap he's done without any shred of consequences. It felt like Inoue was tired of building the slow, successful hype he's so good at and was just like "screw it, let's just kill off Sakuragi and be done with it" at 80%.
! I was pretty satisfied however with the game winning shot combo between him and Rukawa, though. That was probably the most emotional and best thing ever, including their little high fiveand the scene of the team piling in to celebrate.
! But it was literally me celebrating OUT LOUD and hype and two pages later "Shohoku got trashed.." Whaaat?
Flash forward? Akagi's scolarship revoked and his grades crashed in college? Whaaat?
Sakuragi in rehab for months? Whaaaat?
Rukawa in Japan team? Whaaat?
! I mean, I wasn't hoping for a fairy tale "they win the championship" but the shock of realism was too harsh, man.
They could've finished like.. 8th or something, it hurts :(.
Inoue went on to write Real so.. He wanted to be dark and realist

! Yeah, that mono no aware ending was an unexpected bummer for sure. '-' Really makes me wonder what went down with Jump editors and whatnot at that point, there are definitely plenty of rumors. I do think it's pretty telling that it is one of the only franchises that Toei hasn't revisited for some reason.
Shuhoku vs Ryonan is my favourite match in Slam Dunk, seeing Fukuda grow as a character was a joy to read along with Sendoh being Sendoh.
However the finale in itself was pretty amazing. Manly tears were shed plus Eji Sawakita was simply awesome to read (Prime Jordan?).
I wished we could have seen more of Meihou High school and Daiei High school to be honest.
There were a few threads not taken care of that are definitely fishy.
Like, what about Anzai-sensei? In the last game there was a tremendous amount of character development between him and Sakuragi, and then suddenly it's all over without a peep about him, just some offscreen filler about him trying to lose weight? I really enjoyed everything about Anzai, especially the contrast between the reverence the team shows him compared to the familiar if not disrespectful way Sakuragi interacts with him. He's one of the best "wise old man" characters I've ever seen. Wish he got a proper send off.
-Then there's Kainan's progress through the tournament, I was theorizing all through the second half like "hmm maybe Kainan will be beat by that other top rated team and Shohoku will beat them" or even if there'll be a rematch. Nope, nada. Just a mention that they won 2nd. Ryonan too, they deserved a little something extra.
-There was a focus on the Aiwa Academy "star of aichi" which made you expect to see a match against Shohoku but nope.
-Akagi and Kogure leaving the team prematurely felt like a slap in the face, especially with that "10 days later" follow up showing how much Akagi missed basketball.
Sigh. It just felt like a lost potential, I'll still call Slam Dunk a favourite but it's an almost-masterpiece in my opinion.

You want to see Shouhoku losing badly to Aiwa?
@Kaizou:
You want to see Shouhoku losing badly to Aiwa?
No guarantee they would lose badly, heck if Sakuragi didn't get injured and if they had rest beforehand who knows the outcome? They beat the reigning champions, after all.

They beat a reigning champion, but it doesn't mean they can beat Aiwa (even if Sakuragi didn't get injured). Shouhoku had to use all of their energy with only 5 people in almost full time. After they beat Sannou, they are like really tired as hell (remember the battle after Shouyou/Kainan). Plus, they have to fight with Aiwa which is top 4 strongest team in Japan (along with Kainan) in back to back. In addition, Moroboshi and other starting member get lots of rest since they beat their opponents really easily.
It is pretty much confirmed that they going to lost badly (even it said that Shouhoku lost to Aiwa badly).
I loved the ending. The last game is one of my favorite story arcs.
There may be story threads that weren't tied up on screen but I argue they're the type that don't need to be explicit. The most important aspect for me was the development of the five main characters and we saw that illustrated throughout the entirety of the last game.
What happened in the tournament afterwards is what would've realistically happened. Adding too much content afterwards wouldn't increase the quality of this story. He nailed the illustration of the characters development already and ended it there.

I believe the way it ended was realistic. I mean I think it is impossible for Shouhoku to beat Sannou and Aiwa in back to back without having strong bench players.
Honestly it would be kind of anticlimactic if they beat Aiwa and any other teams. Sannoh was the reigning champion and the stakes were much higher than really any other game could be without being unrealistic.
Also, basketball playoffs are much easier for underdogs to triumph, which is why the NBA does best of 7

We're in agreement then.
