I really hated how Crimson Flower turned out.
! That truce between Edelgard and the Agarthans ruined the whole route for me. "Yo teacher, my uncle here kinda killed your dad, but be chill with him for now. We deal with them offscreen."

I disagree with this part. Yes, Claude may not have had personal ties to Edelgard or the Agarthans prior to the start of the game, but their actions get in the way of his own dreams and what he wants to achieve in Fodlan. Not siding with Edelgard even though he has almost the same goals as her (and their battle dialogue even points that out) is probably a byproduct of his route and the Church route being made as almost exact copies of one another, but story-wise, because of her role in part one, I think it's understandable why he doesn't trust her. Plus, since he's connected to Byleth, the temporary leader of the Church post-timeskip, he can make use of their military power for himself and reforming things from the inside is a better option than working with Edelgard if she really was the one behind everything pre-timeskip. (We as the player know the whole truth, but Claude doesn't.).
Bolded comment hits the nail right on the head. The story overall doesn't need Claude to function, and Claude himself hardly influences it. Any guess as to why Claude doesn't ally with the empire is conjecture and I don't think there's a lot to support any interpretation.
Claude doesn't have any specific commitments to the Alliance and cares more about seeing his ideals realized. He gives them up to Dimitri in AM (which is really weird, especially considering the Alliance formed to have independence from the Kingdom), and when he's spared in CF, he kinda just fucks off and doesn't get the chance to engage with Edelgard's ideals. In either route, he should stick around and use his influence to make sure his visions can come to life under the new rule, but he doesn't. The plot really doesn't know what to do with him because he just isn't important outside VW. Even in VW, his importance is becoming a tool of the Empire to flush out the Agarthans.
@No:
Claude is hiding the fact that he's an outsider, tho. He'd never be accepted as Head of House Reagan if the other Alliance lords knew where he was from. His first support with Lorenz is all about how he seemingly popped up out of nowhere with his Crest. The first half of Golden Wind is mostly devoted to Claude trying to get the divided Alliance to rally behind him using what little resources he already has before taking on the Empire. I do agree that he doesn't have much of a character arc. But, for me at least, that's not much of a bad thing since a lot of his supports are about slowing getting to know more about Claude as a person rather than him changing over the course of the story.
Also, all the other nobles with voting privileges in the Alliances are followers of the Church and only sided with the Empire at first to protect their land because they were afraid of it's military strength, which is another reason why he didn't try to join up with the Empire. None of them actually wanted to support Edelgard, which makes sense given her goals and the kind of stuff nobles like Lorenz's dad have done. After the Golden Deer take the Bridge connecting Alliance and Imperial territory, all of them immediately start backing the Church and, since Claude is best buds with the current leader of said Church, backing him.
It is definitely true that any conflict due to Claude trying to change the status quo after the war is over does get skipped over, though. You could argue that he got enough clout because of his actions during the war and relationship with Byleth to change things without much hassle, but that's just my guess and not backed by anything in the actual game.
I don't doubt that he has these struggles, but the game never explores them. He unites the Alliance off-screen in every route (in VW, you only deal with one holdout and they're only holding out for Edelgard-related reasons, not Claude-related reasons).
My misgivings with his character aren't whether or not he has an arc, but rather that he has one off-screen, because none of it is important to the main story. I still like him as a person, and those things you mentioned are there and give him some amount of intrigue and depth, but because it's all so out of focus and the game struggles to justify his existence in the story, he never lives up to his potential and that leaves him at a B in my book.

Apparently Edelgard was designed fro the beginning to be the villain, and I think they ran into issues when they tried to humanize Edelgard on CF. Because they do a really good job and the scenario where she wins is arguably the best for Fodlan out of all the routes. But since she's the villain, she still needs to be tied to the Agarthans and the justification is somewhat flimsy.
On the other hand, Edelgard still hates the Agarthans, and her cooperation with them is what lets them be exposed and defeated in every route but AM (where they get away), so I think the plot puts her ultimately in the right (even if it cooperating with them at all is morally dark grey).
Did not know there was a hearty discussion going on lol. Wagomu and I have been chatting about the game on the side.
I'm too lazy to upload my tier of characters atm but Seteth is my favorite of the game, hands down.

I'm surprised, I figured it would be Anna, given she can be a unit in this game.

Unforunately-
Anna suffers greatly from having no supports unlike the rest of the cast, not even a Byleth support. I always like her as a mascot kinda deal but she doesn't hold a candle to the other characters. Unit wise she's probably the weakest version of Anna ever playable - i like her boons but again, can't support or even do tea time with Byleth, has the facility flag so you can't even make her a dancer (which is a good way to boost your weakest unit). It's a bit disappointing.
Although right now I am doing a maddening run and I have plans to use her in spite of it all.
So after owning the game for nearly a year now I'm finally getting around to actually playing it. My gameplan is to ultimately go Silver Snow > Cindered Shadows > Azure Moon > Verdant Wind > Crimson Flower (on a new game plus Maddening run to torture challenge myself) so that I can have the DLC cast available for as much of the game as possible.
I'm still pretty early on, just finished the Lonato mission, playing on Hard since I kept hearing that Normal gets braindead easy if you're already familiar with Fire Emblem mechanics. I'm still trying to figure out what exactly is the best balance to strike for the life sim stuff. How much time should be spent doing social things with the students, doing the faculty training sessions, doing the free battles, etcetera etc. On that note I do have two questions for those who've already played:
1. Do you ever get the opportunity to do more than one free mission per week? I notice there's a gauge there just like there are for activity points but the game hasn't brought any attention to it other than saying that some missions don't have such a cost on lower difficulties (which obviously doesn't apply to me).
2. How much or how little should I worry about headhunting students from other houses? I'm still early on and some students are harder to recruit than others obviously, but what would you say is around a good point to start really focusing on headhunting lest I be potentially undermanned come the timeskip?

You'll get more activity pts. as you improve your professor rank (I think the max is three, but unless you like fishing, it's going to be a long while).

Unless you're super focused on getting one particular student, it's going to be a bit (I don't usually get another one until chapter 6 because of stat requirements). The thing to remember is that students with requirements that are harder to raise up (heavy armor, flying, riding and authority come to mind) it's often easier to try to get them by boosting your support with them by giving them gifts, getting their assistance for missions (and raising it up on the battlefield) and having meals with them.
I generally recruited everyone I could, because they are all my precious children students.

But then you'll miss out on all the angst of having to fight everyone in the other houses!

Bugs already answered this, but if you're purely worried about your number of characters, it's not absolutely necessary to recruit any students at all, as some members of the Church faculty will join you for free once you reach a certain level/point in the story. Though you won't get the benefits of more support conversations, gameplay options, lore, etc. if you actually do that.
Thanks for the advice so far. I spent the first two-three months or so lavishing most of my attention on the Black Eagle students to get them out of their squishy base classes as quickly as possible and given how things have gone since I'm going to work on aggressive courting some of the more brawny guys and gals. Ferdinand and Caspar have been kind of so-so up until now and I don't want to have Byleth and Edelgard carrying the team so heavily in that department since their abilities turn them into EXP sponges. Also, it feels like so far the method that gives you the most professor level experience is picking up those fishing and gardening manuals that are left lying around (and on that note I feel like I have to keep my nose buried in Serenes Forest whenever I'm wandering around the monastery because no one here is capable of keeping track of their personal belongings!)
The most boneheaded thing I've done up to this point is getting careless around the Death Knight and not realizing I had Lindhart parked directly next to him until it was too late. I really shouldn't've Divine Pulsed that fuck-up away because I well and truly deserved it.

Missing items you find belong to the person that was at that location the previous month; not that I expect anyone to remember where everyone was but there's a logic to it. I'm trying to remember if the manual locations are hinted at on the mini-map but I can't remember (there's not a lot anyway). Battalions will give your units some stat boosts to help them survive longer if you find your front line needs work.
like every emblem game, some units are stronger than others especially for a first playthrough.
Eagles don't have a magic glass cannon so I recommend getting one.
Get one or two flight units to focus on, they will come in handy later on.
Cavalry hits like shit.
Heavy armour tanker feels very niche in Eagles route, you don't really need them.
Battalions can turn an entire match around.
The secret is get everyone's Brawl up to B. And since you are at it, just turn everyone into a Brawler. You win.

The secret is get everyone's Brawl up to B. And since you are at it, just turn everyone into a Brawler. You win.
Except for the ladies, sadly.
Which is bizarre given that one of the people who can give you brawling tutlege is Rhea of all people and it would hardly be out of character for Catherine or Shamir to go around decking people.
Speaking of Brawler, that was the class I've promoted Caspar to but it's just not cutting it. I guess I could've had bad luck with level ups, but he's just not been able to hit all that hard in this class and does more raw damage with axes instead. On the flip side Ferdinand's usefulness practically tripled once I promoted him to Cavalier. So far I've been able to poach Ashe, Leonie, and Ingrid and I should be able to easily snag Felix in a little bit too since Byleth's sword proficiency is already almost high enough. Then I guess if I want a decent Brawler I might have to try luring Raphael out of his house with flowers and food (because screw trying to raise one of Byleth's more esoteric proficiencies through faculty tutoring!).
I just finished the Battle of the Eagle and Lion which lived up to the hype pretty nicely. Not quite as wild as say, the infamous Chapter 10 of Conquest, but it was still a very well put-together three-way battle that nicely avoided the pitfall of resorting to both CPU sides ganging up on the player to provide its difficulty. And the music of course carried a lot of the mission too; "Blues Skies and a Battle" and the unit deployment track both remind me a lot of Ace Combat, and that's a very, very good thing.
^ Me during Sothis's paralogue, underequipped and lacking Gambits because I keep forgetting to equip newly-recruited characters with them.
On the plus side, Caspar actually pulled his weight quite well there.
! Marianne's Paralogue: Allow me to introduce myself.
Oh god.
I dunno, I don't mind the concept of what is essentially a raid boss serving as the boss of the mission or an obstacle that you have to strategize your way around, but getting swarmed by a whole horde of HP sponges with giant AOE attacks doesn't seem like it's going to be much fun.
Alright, I've fought my way through Otome Emblem and have reached the Silver Snow path of Romance of the Three Kingdoms Emblem. Not counting the freebies and virtual freebies you get during both this route and Part I my final list of recruits are Ashe, Leonie, Ingrid, Felix, Lysithea, Raphael, and then on the last month before the deadline I did another sweep for the heck of it and discovered I was able to snag Ignatz and Mercedes on top of them. Most of them have been doing pretty well for me, to the point where I've been sort of leaving a couple of the original Black Eagles students by the wayside. This bit me in the ass somewhat during the first post-timeskip mission where you're stuck with just the starting students and Lindhart, Bernadetta, and Caspar were a bit underleveled and under-classed compared to Dorothea, Petra, and Ferdinand.
Demonic beasts are getting a bit easier to handle now that I have access to more combat arts that are supereffective against them but I still don't find them fun to deal with in large numbers. Nor the waves of Silver Sword-wielding Swordmasters the game's suddenly throwing at me.
That is a fine list of recruits. Ignatz is the only one I struggled to find a great use for.
I'm playing right now! Will probably recruit Felix, Leonie, and Ingrid if possible.
Oh man, I think Leonie's and Lindhardt's paralogue gave me PTSD. The Immovable One had four health bars, took half damage from everything and had Aegis and Parvise on top of that, ignores any super-effective combat arts and spells, can counterattack no matter what, doubles you when it's on its last HP bar, and still has a giant AOE field attack on top of all that. It was like everything I dislike about demonic beasts stacked together into one unit and dialed up to eleven. That bow better be worth it…
A friend asked me a question I realize I have no clue about.
In Japanese, the Cavalier class is called "Social Knight". What exactly does that mean, is it like a reference to something, or maybe a mistranslation?
So I wrapped up Silver Snow during the board's latest downtime. That final map, which I hear is the toughest of the four, was something else. I didn't manage to pull off a no-death attempt until I finally realized that it was smarter to turtle my through and let the enemy come to me instead of turning the eastern half of the map into a giant meatgrinder. I had to have spent nearly two hours systematically making sure that every last enemy unit aside from from the two Golems on the northern ramparts was as dead as a doornail before I even entertained the idea of engaging the final boss themself. I did end up discovering through this that once the three Physic mages were dead I could poke a Golem to death with nothing but an onager which was cool.
On the whole I feel like Conquest is still king when it comes to map and mission design since Three Houses hasn't required me to do anything especially unorthodox so far but so far I'm comfortable calling it the best of the four Fire Emblem games I've played when looking at the overall package. The level of customization and control you have over your units is unmatched by the 3DS titles and the quality of the writing is obviously tiers above Fates's. That said, some of the proficency requirements for the later classes were asinine and the Monastery loses its luster in the final stretch after you max out your Professor Level, most of your achievable supports, and have nothing left to really do. Maybe the DLC helps with this a bit, I dunno.
Even though I spent almost exactly one-hundred hours on this first run-through I'm definitely looking forward to playing the other houses in the future, especially with how Silver Snow writes the other two Lords out with the swiftness. Right now I'm plugging through the DLC (this map with approximately one billion Golems is -_-) then the plan is going to be to tackle Azure Moon next after taking a hiatus from Three Houses for a bit.

I ended up giving Ignatz a Critical Ring and classing him as an Assassin to turn him into a crit machine. All of the recruits did pretty well save for Raphael and Ashe who just sort of ended up falling by the wayside (at least in Ashe's case it's because he wasn't available off the bat post-timeskip).

Nice. I bullied him into being a Mortal Savant for the giggles and… he didn't do too badly. But he was clearly not exactly the best pick.
Isn't Iggie supposed to be a Sniper or Bow Knight?
Isn't Iggie supposed to be a Sniper or Bow Knight?
Probably but the issue is finding room for Ignatz in that role when you have so many other great choices. Off the top of my head Shamir, Bernadetta, Leonie, and of course Claude is OP in any bow-related capacity.
Someone made this fantastic video tribute for the series' 30th anniversary, with clips from all the games played over the main theme song. They also translated the lyrics, which are actually hilarious.
The devolution of Marth's sprite at the end is absurdly hilarious.
So this isn't the actual translation? Betrayal! Trust nobody!
So rather then finish invisible kingdom (which yes I haven't finished after about 2 years) I downloaded Shadow Dragon and well it's good thing I'm not new to the game and using guides to fill in some gaps cause boy…..some of these mechanics (or lack thereof) make this game weird.
Putting a healer in harm's way for EXP?
Yeah, even back then, someone should have noticed that was a dumb idea.
Well, it's the first one. What're ya gonna do?
Anyway, I've been playing it too and yeah, wow. The menus and battle forecasts of future games are an absolute godsend.
Some other interesting tidbits for those curious.
**No weapon ranks. Back in the day, many took Jegan's Silver Lance and gave it to Caeda. Hence why she got the Winged Spear in the remake.
**No weapon triangle, either.
**A lot less promotions for classes. And Armor Knight and General were actually separate classes.
**Pegasus Knights promoted into Dragon Knights.

Yeah honestly it's hard to find the motivation to keep playing when the game is so much more awkward than every other tactics game I've ever played.

What hell?

I haven’t had too much trouble with that aside from Mathis letting Marth double him on Map 4 like a dumbass good thin for the rewind feature.
What hell?
Yeah, the Armor Knights could use both Swords and Lances like Cavaliers, but there was only one playable General in the one-eyed guy called Lorenz, and he only used Swords.
Also, another few tidbits, both Mages and Clerics promoted into Bishops (which means even the evil sorcerer Gharnef also was a Bishop), and the Hunter and Horseman classes were also separate (then Mystery made Horseman the promotion).
And yeah, since Pegasus Knights are exclusively female, makes you wonder how Michallis got his Dragon.
Right now I'm just spamming the arena on Chapter 8 now that I've beaten all the enemies. God willing, the enemy reinforcements won't reset and/or there's no turn limit on this game.
I spent like a 100 something turns leveling up Wrys on map 2 so it does look like there’s no kill screen shenanigans.
Been playing Binding Blade and just beat Chapter 21. I forgot to bring an Armorslayer or Hammer and was thus forced to use Roy to help whittle down Murdock. Through the magic of supports and a Rapier the usually underperforming kid did about 30 damage, the most of anyone! He even crit like a champ.
Roy's our boy?
Hoolleeee CRAP 4-star Merlinus sucks. A 4-star should not have an Attack of 10 at level 11.
Considering he couldn't attack at all in the games he was, it's kind of a win.
If he can't attack for shit he should at least be a healer, but he's not.

I happened to play Binding Blade too actually, and just recently beat it. I think I randomly had a Fire Emblem video recommended to me on Youtube and then went down a rabbit hole. Eventually I got to a video making fun of FE6 for their reinforcements or something like that. So I ended up finding it online here, and I've been playing it the past month or so. I definitely abused arenas because of a lot of the stat growths are pretty bad. And I loaded saves if there were unfair reinforcements lol. I ended up losing one character, the 2nd male thief you get. He died in one of the fog of war maps in the middle, I didn't feel like resetting since thieves can't promote and you just buy chest/door keys in a couple of the shops. I ended up just using one bow user the whole game, Sue. And I kind of regret it. There are a ton of wyvern riders in this game and even the unpromoted ones can take some hits.
I thought the game was pretty good, but the second to last battle of the "true ending" was easily the weakest part for me. You go down a linear path and just fight dragons that are sponges unless you use your divine weapons. And then there are reinforcements following you in a straight line. It made me miss the earlier chapters where 4-8 wyverns would spawn out of nowhere lol.
There aren't really any overpowered characters at your disposal. Berserkers and swordmasters are crazy as usual, but their accuracy and strength respectively seem slightly more balanced then the other fire emblem games I've played. Besides Fa, but she has limited uses with her dragonstone. I only used her to finish off promoted units so she got near 100 xp every fight. Her stats end up being pretty ridiculous if you get her to 20.
Roy not being able to promote until like a dozen chapters after you'll likely cap him the first time is pretty damn hilarious. My Roy had horrible strength so I ended up using a lot of stat boosting items (which you can buy in a secret shop) to clean that up. So you don't really use Roy for half the game and can't rely on an overpowered lord unit. Lilina must have like 200% growth on her magic stat, she just destroys everything. I had give her a few dragonshields to up her defense. In one of the last chapters that had an arena, I decided to bring along my Lv. 3 Wendy and she has the weirdest level ups for a knight unit. She gets more speed than strength/defense. She ends up being a pegasus knight masquerading as an armor unit. It was weird seeing her double-attack units like sages and heroes. At level 8 or 9 as a general I think she had at least 20 in every relevant stat besides Resistance, what a beast lol.
That was fun to finally play Roy's game. Maybe I'll play Ike's next one of these days
Fucking hell. I changed my Nintendo password yesterday, so FE: Heroes had me sign in again. Except when I do it tells me "cannot display this page as you do not have access rights". What the hell does that mean? I can log into Nintendo on my laptop just fine, and this technically isn't telling me my password is wrong so that's not it either. It makes no sense.
