I highly recommend 7 (Rekka no Ken, titled "Fire Emblem" here, it's for GBA and Wii U virtual console)
Or 13 (Awakening, for 3DS)
Both games are very beginning-friendly, and while you can't skip 7's tutorial the first time around, it does a good job in explaining things thoroughly.

Fire Emblem Stat Ups: Fates has sold over a combined 300,000 units in its first week in Japan. That's 261,000 between the Black and White versions and another 43,000 from the Special Edition with both. For reference, Awakening sold 240,000 units in its first week, so sales are up 25%.

Yes. The titles are officially Birthright (Hoshido) and Conquest (Nohr). I'm not aware of any confirmation for the special combined edition but it seems likely in the West too.

I just saw Japan has the first FIVE Fire Emblem games for virtual console (yet FE6 is weirdly absent) This year is the 25th anniversary of the series, and it would be pretty awesome to get those 6 for an international virtual console release.
Buuut….NoA has their focus on current games, especially the new Fire Emblem. Plus it seems more likely Path of Radiance, Radiant Dawn, and Shadow Dragon would come first, since those 3 have been localized…

I admit, I redownloaded it myself - It's one of my guilty pleasures, I enjoy replaying it quite a bit, perhaps due in part to its simplicity as a remake of FE1.

I realize it's nitpicking but I wish FE11 didn't look so drab. I remember being psyched years ago when I heard Marth's adventure had come to stateside, but I wasn't wowed by it?
Then again, my Fire Emblem interest kinda faded after FE7 up until my brother came home with Awakening. I suppose it was a combination of other games taking my time (it was the Gamecube and PS2 era, tons of good stuff)….and well, I guess I was so attached to the FE7 characters I didn't feel like playing another game with new characters.
But hey, Awakening and Smash Bros. revived my love for the series.

So you never played path of radiance? That is my favourite fire emblem and I really like FE7.
The first time the main character wasn't a prince or turn out to be a royal so you could see a kind of lower class perspective from then mercenaries. -
Path of Radiance is great, Radiant Dawn is mediocre and was obviously rushed.

This is supposedly to help her get over her ditziness around cute girls, but some people have taken date rape and gay therapy connotations from it.

I feel like Sacred Stones is saying "you. yeah, you. want to grind against monsters? Come on, there's no harm in it. You've played Awakening. Live a little." Because chapter 12 of Eirika's route…..gaaah.
The whole mountain is littered with monsters. Killer spiders, gargoyles, demon lions, and centaurs. One of them has a halberd.
I might do it for a couple of levels, or maybe just do it for Amelia so she won't be dead weight. My brother told me you get some rare treasures in the tower mode or something, is that right? It's like halfway through the story and I barely have any promotion items.
Also L'Arachel is best princess.

Some praise the fact that Kamui can have a male or female homosexual relationship, others are very bothered by the choices (the female one is blasted as a Tharja clone)
! Although reading about this stuff has kinda spoiled some other stuff, which isn't fun. I already picked out who I was gonna marry anyway (Felicia in Nohr, Rinka in Hoshido,Cyrus for the female run), but…yeah.....I'd feel uncomfortable picking her now.

Plenty of IRL bisexuals would state that they feel attraction towards people of the same sex, but would still rather date someone of the opposite sex. ! -Your character portrait looks aggressive/not smiling when you're selecting a weapon to attack.
-The enemy's portrait will actually change to look more distressed if you pick a more damaging/better weapon. Likewise, your portraits will turn more distressed and in pain if you pick a weapon with lower hit rate or damage
-Ike, Robin, Lucina, and Marth amiibos are all voiced. They have their Smash 4 voice actors as usual. -
